INDIANAPOLIS â??? Park Tudorâ??s No. 1-ranked boys tennis team easily swung by No. 5 North Central (Indianapolis) with a 4-1 win Sept. 22 in the semifinal round of the Marion County Tournament.
The Panthers cruised to victory by winning the first four matches and dropping only one set.
â??We just have a nice, solid, deep team,â? said Park Tudor coach Dave Heffern. â??We donâ??t have any real weaknesses. If we play well, we will win.â?
The victory over North Central comes on the heels of beating No. 3 Brebeuf, 3-2, Sept. 21. Park Tudor began the county tournament with a 5-0 victory Sept. 20 over Warren Central.
â??Today was just another example of another nice team effort,â? Heffern said.
The Panthers will face the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Lawrence Central and Perry Meridian Sept. 23.
At No. 1 singles, Park Tudorâ??s Will Pearson downed Will Armstrong, 6-3, 6-1, while Michael Rardon (6-2, 6-0) took care of business in quick fashion by only losing two games to North Centralâ??s Max Shelton in the No. 3 singles match.
Yale Reardon (No. 2 singles) took home the only win for North Central on the day with a tough 6-4, 6-4 win over Alex Leopold.
At No. 1 doubles, it was an up-and-down effort for Kent Winingham and Michael Cournoyer of Park Tudor, who took the first set, 6-2, only to fall, 6-1, in the second to David Lett and David Dietz. The Panther duo, however, came back strong in the third set to win, 6-2.
The No. 2 doubles team of Nick Perdue and Robby Talbert needed only two sets to discard David Moss and Max Newman of North Central, 6-2, 6-2.
After winning the Marion County Tournament in 2003, Park Tudor fell to Brebeuf last year in the championship match, 3-2.
