BB SECT 25: 3A #17 North Montgomery upsets #5 Danville, 55-51

By Jeff Hodge
Contributing Writer
CRAWFORDSVILLE – No. 17 North Montgomery got a little revenge March 6 at Class 3A Sectional 25, upsetting fifth-ranked Danville behind the inspired performance of recent operation undergoer D.J. Byrd. The Chargers will face Western Boone, a 52-46 winner over Lebanon in the night’s other semifinal, for the title.
Here’s a wrap …
3A #17 North Montgomery 55, 3A #5 Danville 51
Purdue’s future is looking very bright for some time to come if tonight’s marquee matchup between North Montgomery’s D.J. Byrd and Danville’s Travis Carroll is any measuring stick.
Both players played up to their potential and had the crowd amped for the entire contest. Byrd, returning to action just a week after surgery to repair a torn medial meniscus in his left knee, was shooting free throws just a day after the surgery while still on crutches.
The 6’5” senior was held out of the starting lineup for about the first five minutes, yet the game remained close in the first quarter with Danville (17-5) taking an 18-16 lead after one. Byrd scored nine of his 11 first-half points in the second quarter to push the Chargers to a 30-26 halftime lead.
The 6’9” Carroll, meanwhile, led Danville with 11 first-half points.
North Montgomery (16-5) looked to have the game well in control at 49-37 with 5:26 remaining in the game, but Danville cut the lead to 51-45 over the next 2:15. The Chargers then hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the four-point victory, removing the bitter sting of a 61-53 loss at Danville just over two weeks ago.
Byrd led North Montgomery with 19 points. Senior guard Clay Pierce added 17 points for the Chargers, who shot 22 of 45 (49 percent) from the field despite going only 3 of 11 on 3-point attempts.
Travis, a junior, led Danville with a game-high 22 points, going 9 of 12 from the field and 4 of 5 from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Tyler Hall added 10 points for Danville.
The two star players lived up to the hype, making this game reminiscent of the original non-class basketball from days gone by. The gymnasium was packed, and the fans went wild for the play of both teams on the floor.
A great matchup – one too early in the tournament – between two solid teams.

Western Boone (8-14) might look back on its mid-season losing skid from late January to mid-February as a springboard to something much more rewarding. The Stars will be playing for a sectional title now after a 52-46 win over Lebanon (8-13).
The first half of the second semifinal was played very evenly, with the Stars holding a slight 26-24 lead at the break. Western Boone shot 11 of 26 (42 percent) for the opening half, led by senior guard Aaron Vaughn’s eight points. Lebanon, led by freshman guard Trey Hendrix’s nine points, hit 8 of 15 (53 percent), including 4 of 8 from 3-point range to keep the game close.
The Stars turned up the defensive pressure to start the third quarter, allowing Lebanon only two points on 1-of-9 shooting in taking a sizeable 35-26 lead into the final quarter. The game was salted away by as the Stars hit 10 of 18 free throws in the final 1:48.
Tonight’s victory was the fourth in a row for the Stars, including two in the postseason.

Vaughn and senior guard Trevor Poole led the stars with 14 points each, while Lebanon was led by Hendrix’s 20 points and junior guard Jacob Molter’s 11.

Western Boone advances to the Sectional 25 championship Saturday night to face heavily favored North Montgomery. But this is Indiana, where ya never know what might happen on the hardwood …

BB SECT 44: 2A #5 Lawrenceburg holds off Hauser, 74-67

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
GREENSBURG – Despite entering its Class 2A Sectional 44 opening-round clash March 4 against fifth-ranked Lawrenceburg a nearly 20-point underdog (according to the Sagarin power ratings), Hauser battled gamely throughout an up-tempo and highly entertaining affair.
But a look at the stats would show that too many turnovers and some shoddy free throw shooting were the main culprits in the Jets’ near-miss in a 74-67 Lawrenceburg victory. That, and 20 second-half points – part of a game-high 32-point outburst – from the Tigers’ Jim Faehr.
The 6’2” senior did it all. Faehr tallied nine third-quarter points on a putback, layup, drive, and 3-pointer. But that was nothing compared with 7-for-8 free throw shooting and two critical steals in the last three minutes of the game, the second of which resulted in a fast-break layup that gave Lawrenceburg (18-3) a 67-56 lead with 1:18 left to play.
Faehr was the perfect late-game straight man for classmate Sean Powell’s first-quarter hi-jinks. The 6’1” Powell, the Tigers’ leading scorer at 18.8 points per game, snagged three steals and had eight points himself in a high-scoring opening period that ended with a 24-18 Lawrenceburg lead.
But like several of his teammates, Powell was a little under the weather and wore down a bit later in the contest. Faehr’s ascension was thus crucial in enabling the Tigers to ward off a gallant, 32-minute effort by Hauser (11-10), the 2006 Class A state champion.
Particularly troublesome for Lawrenceburg was 5’10” junior Cody Thayer, whose kamikaze entries into the paint resulted in a team-high 23 points and bucket after big bucket to keep the Jets in it.
“I was really impressed by the Thayer boy, number 10,” said 16th-year Lawrenceburg coach Mike Pratt.
Powell joined Faehr in double digits with 15 points, while 6-foot junior Justin Ricketts added 13 – most coming from behind the 3-point arc.
Three Hauser players reached double figures alongside Thayer: 6’8” senior center Tanner Case (14 points), 6’6” sophomore Silas Sims (11), and 6’5” sophomore Evan Dodd (10).
The Tigers will face Switzerland County (17-5) in the second semifinal Friday after Southwestern (Hanover) (7-14) and sectional host North Decatur (6-15) tip off at 6 p.m. ET. Lawrenceburg was 2-0 in that series this year, winning 60-56 in overtime Jan. 8 and cruising to a 75-55 victory on Valentine’s Day.
In Wednesday’s opening game, Switzerland County slowly pulled away from South Ripley in a 64-54 victory. The Pacers led by one at the first stop, eight at the half, and 44-32 heading to the fourth quarter.
South Ripley (8-13) cut the lead to seven down the stretch, but Switzerland County held the Raiders off by going 8 of 14 from the free throw line after entering the one-and-bonus with six minutes to play.
The Pacers got amazing balance offensively as three 6’4” players – senior Kyle Green and juniors Travis Tackett and Brennan Bragg – all finished with 15 points. South Ripley was led by the 13 points of 6’1” senior Andy Miller (13 points), while 6-foot junior Chase Grider had 12 and 6’5” senior Thomas Welch added 10.

BB: Uncle Mike’s Sectional Notebook II

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
Uncle Mike is definitely suffering from a case of basketball overdose. Could there be a more beautiful disease? He isn’t even grumpy this evening. Those of us who know him, however, usually like him better when he is.
Here are his thoughts on Wednesday night’s action …
Class 4A
Valparaiso 53, Chesterton 48 (2OT)
This sectional has been a major source of heartache for Chesterton in the last couple of years.
Pike 50, Brownsburg 48
The champions go down on a last-second shot. Somehow, it is fitting that would be the way it happened.
Class 3A
Owen Valley 51, Greencastle 48
These are big days in Spencer. This outdoes the opening day of deer-hunting season.
Class 2A
Park Tudor 44, Heritage Christian 38
This is one of the biggest upsets we will see this week.
Tipton 48, Oak Hill 44
The Blue Devils won, but they had better grow some bigger horns before Fort Wayne Luers comes calling.
Class A
Fall Creek Academy 52, Indianapolis Lutheran 49
What is this world coming to? Now we have Charter schools beating private schools! This is going to open up a whole new class of whining.
Borden 76, Rock Creek Academy 44
Got milk? Nobody under the age of 40 is going to get that reference. And you get bonus points if you can remember the name of the cow.

BB SECT 40: 2A #1 Tipton rallies to defeat #7 Oak Hill, 48-44

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
TIPTON – Oak Hill dominated the vast majority of its Class 2A Sectional 40 opening-round game March 4 versus 3A top-ranked Tipton. But the host Blue Devils dominated the part that mattered. As a result, Tipton came away with an improbable 48-44 victory.
You would not expect a school that travelled annually to Marion for tournament play for more than 30 years to be intimidated by playing the highly regarded Blue Devils on their home court, and Oak Hill certainly was not. The Golden Eagles started the game applying defensive pressure that totally befuddled Tipton.
Oak Hill held Tipton’s high-powered offense to just four first-quarter points, going on a four-minute 8-0 run at the end of the period to lead 10-4. The Blue Devils (21-2) were getting shots, but they were rushed and not the shots they really wanted.
Indiana University-bound Derek Elston was limited to just two points on a putback midway through the period.
By the same token, there are a lot of reasons people think so highly of Tipton, and the Blue Devils exhibited a few of them in the second quarter. They began to ramp up their own defensive effort, forcing Oak Hill (17-4) into several poor shots and several turnovers.
Tipton slowly cut into the lead, finally reducing it to two points at 16-14 just before the half. Then Oak Hill’s Eric Doyle hit a floater in the lane just before the horn to give the Eagles a four-point cushion at intermission.
Those who thought Tipton had survived the storm were sadly mistaken. Oak Hill started the second half on an 8-2 run that not only gave the Golden Eagles a 26-16 advantage but also found Tipton getting into early foul trouble.
The Blue Devils were in need of a hero, and the likely candidate showed up in the nick of time. The 6’8” Elston, who had been held to four points in the first half, scored seven more during an 8-0 Tipton run that cut the lead to 26-24 late in the period.
Despite his best efforts, however, it appeared Oak Hill had the necessary kryptonite. The Golden Eagles responded with a run of their own and led after three stanzas, 33-28.
What went largely unnoticed in that third quarter was a change in the Tipton defense. When the Oak Hill lead reached 10 midway through the quarter, coach Travis Daugherty switched his troops into a zone.
While it did not pay immediate dividends on the scoreboard, it did slow the Golden Eagles down on the offensive end. That quickly transferred to the defensive end, where the visitors seemed incapable of applying quite as much pressure as they had during most of the game.
The payoff came in the fourth period. Oak Hill expanded the lead to eight at 38-30 with 6:27 left to play … then it all fell apart for the Golden Eagles. In fact, it went away completely and quickly.
Suddenly a Tipton team that had struggled with Oak Hill’s quickness all evening became the quicker team. The Blue Devils were the aggressor. They had turned the switch on the Oak Hill engine to “off,” and the GEs seemed incapable of turning it back on.
Oak Hill would not score again until there was less than a minute to play. In that time, Tipton went on a 16-0 run that turned a 38-30 deficit into a 46-38 lead. Oak Hill’s misery included four missed free throws, four turnovers, and a couple questionable shots.
Elston added six more points during the run, but the key blow was a 3-pointer from the top of the key from Craig Dickey that gave Tipton its first lead since 4-2. The Golden Eagles tried valiantly to fight back but had far too little time.
Elston led Tipton with 19 points and 14 rebounds on the night. Doyle led Oak Hill with 15 markers.
In the night’s first game, Eastern (Greentown) eliminated Sheridan (8-13) with a 66-58 victory. The Comets (11-10), who fell 73-51 at Tipton on the last day of January, will get another shot at the Blue Devils in Friday’s second semifinal.
The evening’s first game will pit bye-receiver Madison-Grant (13-7) against No. 12 Guerin Catholic (15-7), a 63-54 winner over Taylor in Tuesday’s sectional opener. Those batch of Golden Eagles may be flying under the radar as they sit seventh in the latest 2A Sagarin power ratings.
After the game, Tipton coach Daugherty spoke of the heart of both teams. Dickey’s shot and Daugherty’s comments appear in the video players on this page!

BB SECT 10: 4A #4 North Central rallies to handle #7 Cathedral, 73-61

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
INDIANAPOLIS – Through the first three quarters of the Class 4A Sectional 10 opener March 3 at Indianapolis Arlington, seventh-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral had executed a near-perfect game plan against No. 4 North Central (Indianapolis).
The black-clad Fighting Irish had limited the state’s highest-scoring team (79.2 points per game) to just 35 field goal attempts. North Central’s leader, 6’3” junior guard Terone Johnson, had picked up his fourth foul on a three-point play by Cathedral 6’6” senior forward Errick Peck with 4:30 left in the third period. And the Irish led 42-39 heading to the fourth after a fast-break layup by senior guard Patrick Paligraf energized the sizeable Cathedral faithful three seconds ahead of the buzzer.
Darn the luck at having to play those final eight minutes. After Cathedral drew even at 54 – the game’s eighth tie – with 3:44 to go on a pair of double-bonus free throws by 5’8” senior guard Jarrett Hamilton, it was the Panthers who exploited the free throw line from that point forward in pulling out a 73-61 victory.

North Central (22-1) made 14 of 21 free throws in the game’s final 2:48, knocking down 17 of 27 in the final stanza alone and using an 11-0 run over the next two minutes to pull away.
Panthers 6’4” senior forward Damon Ellison picked up much of the slack in Johnson’s absence, scoring a game-high 19 points. He was joined in double figures by 6’3” freshman guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera (15 points), 6’8” senior center Justin Reid (14), and Johnson – the state’s ninth-leading scorer at 25.3 ppg – with 13.
Cathedral (20-3) countered with four players in double digits as well: 6’3” junior swingman Kofi Hughes with 14, Peck with 12, and Paligraf and 6’6” senior swingman Kelsey Barlow each with 11.
Hughes, the mobile quarterback for Cathedral’s state championship football team, was a sparkplug early on for the Irish as he scored the last seven points of the opening quarter on a putback, a drive and subsequent free throw following a foul, and another layin on consecutive possessions.
But his air-balled 3-point attempt with 54 seconds to go in the game would serve as the metaphorical slamming door for the Irish, who endured a 6-for-21 shooting effort in the final period en route to a 39-percent evening (26 of 67).
After being held to just 10-for-22 shooting in a not-that-deliberate first half, meanwhile, North Central responded with 6-for-13 and 8-for-14 field efforts over the final 16 minutes in addition to all those free throws. After seeming disinterested as a team in the first half, the Panthers pounced by limiting Cathedral’s early attacking-the-bucket prowess and finding their own success inside.
“You have to be ready for any style (of play) once the tournament starts,” said 16th-year North Central coach Doug Mitchell. “We just kept pokin’ and proddin’ till we found something that worked.”
It took awhile. Hughes’ offensive infusion led to a 15-all tie after one, and a pair of Paligraf layups in the final two minutes of the second stanza turned a 24-21 Irish deficit into a 25-24 halftime lead.
Six-three junior swingman Trip McFall opened the third period with a three from the left wing that got the lead back for the Panthers, but Cathedral went inside again on its next three possessions (layup, drive, layup) to take a 31-27 lead.
After Johnson acquired that fourth foul midway through the quarter, Cathedral was able to move the lead out to five on two occasions, the second coming on an impressive bank shot muscled in from the right side by Peck with 3:30 left in the third.
But after 6’6″ senior forward Barry Flynn’s fast-break layup gave Cathedral a 45-41 exactly one minute into the fourth quarter, North Central responded with a layin and long jumper from Ellison followed by an and-one putback and foul shot from Smith-Rivera at 5:56 for a 48-45 advantage. That spurt coincided with a pair of missed bunnies by Peck and Hamilton, a serious sign of foreshadowing.
The game remained close for the next two minutes as Cathedral scored on four straight possessions following a turnover to draw even at 54. But that’s when the lid closed at the Cathedral end as the Irish missed 13 of their final 15 shots.
North Central moves on to face Lawrence Central (10-9) in Friday’s opening semifinal. The entire free world now anticipates a North Central-Lawrence North showdown Saturday in the final if the third-ranked Wildcats (21-2) can get past Indianapolis Broad Ripple (11-10) Wednesday and either Arlington (12-10) or Warren Central (9-13) Friday.
