The 39th Annual IHSAA Baseball State Tournament Series is under way, and sectionals are in the history books. Following is a look back on significant sectional storylines.

Class 4A

Congratulations, Class 4A. With only five of your 13 ranked teams losing in sectional play, you have the honor of having followed form the most of the four classes.

And, the only two 4A ranked teams that were upset by unranked opponents both were victimized by the home-field advantage. No. 2 Lake Central fell to host Munster, 6-3, in the sectional final, and No. 9 Fort Wayne Snider blew a big early lead in losing, 9-5, to host Homestead in the semis.

Lake Central, which had blown past Lowell and East Chicago by identical 10-0 scores to reach the finals, itself blew a 3-2 lead with two outs in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Munsters Andrew Bilse, who entered the game hitting just .230. Munster then pounced for three runs in the extra frame to stun the Indians.

Snider, meanwhile, was rocking and rolling with a 5-0 lead when Homesteads Nate Carden hit a three-run homer in the fifth, opening the flood gates for nine unanswered runs for the host Spartans.

Among the not-so-surprising upsets were:

· No. 6 host Elkhart Memorialâs 7-2 loss to eighth-ranked Penn in the championship game

· No. 7 Terre Haute Northâs 9-8 loss to 12th-ranked Northview in the championship at Plainfield

· No. 11 Castleâs 13-0 defeat at the hands of 13th-ranked host Evansville North in the semis (granted, thatâs kind of a scary margin of defeat, but North went on to blast Evansville Reitz, 9-1, in the final so look out, New Albany)

Of note involving ranked teams who advanced were a pair of Indianapolis-area sectionals.

Top-ranked Brownsburg scored 11, 11, and 12 runs in rolling to the Avon Sectional title. The Bulldogs spotted Ben Davis a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the final before roaring back with a 12-6 victory to stay perfect at 31-0.

Fifth-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral, meanwhile, ripped the heart out of host Lawrence North on Andrew Madias three-run blast with two outs in the top of the seventh of the championship game in a 4-3 thriller. LN had ousted defending 4A champ rival Lawrence Central in a nine-inning semifinal, 7-6.

Class 3A

Class 3A saw upsets galore as nine of the Top 16 went down, none bigger than defending 3A champ New Palestine ââ?¬â?? another victim of home-field disadvantage. The second-ranked Dragons were slain in a nine-inning championship clash with host Pendleton Heights, which had also upset No. 9 New Castle in the semis, 10-8.

No. 3 Greensburg also exited early, dropping a 3-0 decision to Franklin County in its opener at Connersville. But the host Spartans also got jobbed, falling to Batesville, 7-3, in the championship game.

No. 4 Vincennes Lincoln, meanwhile, fell in an epic 14-inning final to host No. 10 Jasper, 1-0.

And No. 5 Western also went bye-bye, dropping a 2-0 semifinal to eventual Twin Lakes champ No. 6 West Lafayette.

Other ranked teams to go by the wayside were:

· No. 8 Bellmont, which lost a 4-2 eight-inning semifinal to eventual runner-up host New Haven (conquered in the final, 7-3, by No. 12 Fort Wayne Dwenger)

· No. 13 host Kankakee Valley, which fell to top-ranked eventual champ Andrean, 15-9, in the semis

· No. 16 host West Vigo, a 3-0 semifinal loser to eventual champ Edgewood

Class 2A

As in Class 3A, there were nine upsets of ranked schools in the 2A sectionals, including Nos. 3, 4, and 5. Yipes.

No. 3 Boone Grove (surprise!) got ousted by a sectional host, falling 7-6 to Lake Station in the championship game.

No. 4 Cass, meanwhile, fell in the Wabash semis, 5-3, to Manchester, which went on to upset No. 12 Northfield, 4-3, in the finals for good measure.

And No. 5 Park Tudor probably thought it caught a break when No. 12 Triton Central was upset in the Indianapolis Scecina semifinals, 7-6, by Heritage Christian. Wrong. Heritage Christian prevailed, 2-1, over Park Tudor for the title.

Other ranked teams that said good-bye were:

· No. 7 South Spencer, a 2-1 victim in the nine-inning Southridge championship to No. 6 North Posey, which outscored its three opponents by a combined 16-1 margin

· No. 8 Hagerstown, which was eliminated by eventual champ No. 15 Centerville, 7-1, in the Union County semis

· No. 10 Brownstown, a 10-1 loser in the Clarksville championship at the hands of No. 11 Providence

· No. 14 Seeger, a 5-2 loser in the North Montgomery opener to Fountain Central

Fremont, meanwhile, obviously is being powered this postseason by the Energizer bunny. After downing Garrett, 5-3, in the Eastside opener in a standard seven innings, Fremont then posted wins over Central Noble (11-4, in 11 innings) and Churubusco (3-2, in 12 innings).

And No. 1 South Knox allowed but two runs in three games, rolling to victories over Eastern Greene (10-1), Linton (12-1 in six innings), and Mitchell (3-0), respectively.

Class A

Sense a theme here? The most upsets occurred in liââ?¬â?¢l old Class A, where 10 of 16 ranked teams lost ââ?¬â?? only a .375 survival batting average. The biggest names to go down were No. 2 Henryville and No. 3 Riverton Parke, both of whom lost in the semifinals.

Henryville fell, 7-6, to No. 10 South Central (Elizabeth), the eventual champ at Lanesville. And host Riverton Parke also got beat, 3-2 by a team of destiny, eventual champion Covington.

Two teams were tied at No. 5 in the final Class A coaches poll, and both lost. West Central fell, 4-2, in the Tri-County finals to South Newton. And Orleans dropped a 4-0 semifinal in eight innings to eventual champ No. 15 Northeast Dubois at Springs Valley.

Strangely, that 4-0 loss by Orleans was the only game in four tilts at Larry Birds alma mater that didnt end in a football score. Northeast Dubois shut out West Washington, 21-0, in Game 1; host Springs Valley blanked Crothersville, 17-0, in Game 2; and Northeast Dubois trumped Springs Valleys safety with a last-second field goal to win the final, 3-2.

Other ranked squads to end their seasons a bit too early for their own liking were:

· No. 7 New Harmony, which got a bye into the championship but still couldnât survive the three-team Tecumseh Sectional, falling 6-2 to Oakland City

· No. 9 Jac-Cen-Del, a 4-3 semifinal loser at Madison Shawe to eventual champ Oldenburg

· No. 11 Frontier, a 14-3 guinea pig at the hands of top-ranked and defending champion Lafayette Central Catholic in the Carroll (Flora) opener (LCC outscored its three opponents by a combined 36-4)

· No. 12 Oregon-Davis, an 11-9 loser in its opener to No. 13 host Michigan City Marquette, which then fell in the finals, 5-2, to South Central (Union Mills)

· No. 15 Hebron, which dropped the Morgan Township opener, 5-2, to eventual runner-up Whiting

Ya gotta love one-and-outs, sports fans

A baseball tournament overview …

A field of 374 teams will begin play May 30 as the pairings for the 39th Annual IHSAA Baseball State Tournament Series were drawn May 19 at the IHSAA office in Indianapolis.

The tournament will begin with 64 sectionals conducted in four different classes beginning Memorial Day and continue through the week, concluding June 4. Daily schedules for each tournament site will be listed on the IHSAA website (IHSAA.org) prior to the start of the tournament. Because of possible weather postponements and other conflicts, it is advised to check with the host school for precise day and time schedules.

Each of the sectional champions will advance to a one-game regional contest to be played June 7. Each regional game will be played on the home field of the even-numbered sectional champion.

The 32 regional champions ââ?¬â?? eight in each class ââ?¬â?? will advance to one of eight semistate sites June 11. Semifinal games are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with the two winners returning for an 8 p.m. championship game and a berth in the state finals.

This yearââ?¬â?¢s finals will be played in Lafayette due to a scheduling conflict at Victory Field in Indianapolis, site of the state finals since 1997. The four state championship games will be played at Loeb Stadium ââ?¬â?? part of Columbian Park, the previous site of the IHSAA baseball finals in 1971, 1974, and 1975.

Note the following schedule change from previous years: Pairings for the state finals will be announced June 12, with the title contests scheduled for the following weekend.

Among the top-ranked teams in each class, Brownsburg (Class 4A) will face Zionsville in the first round at Avon; Andrean (3A) drew the bye into the semifinals at Kankakee Valley; South Knox (2A) will meet host Eastern Greene in the first round; and Lafayette Central Catholic (A) will meet Frontier in the opening game at Carroll (Flora).

Besides Central Catholic, other defending state champions will begin their 2005 tournament trails the following way: Lawrence Central (4A) meets Indianapolis Arlington in the first round at Lawrence North; New Palestine (3A) will play Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in the bye game at Pendleton Heights; and Hammond Noll (2A) takes on Hanover Central in the first game at Lake Station.
