INDIANAPOLIS â??? No. 6 Zionsville scored twice within the first 12
minutes of action and held on for a 3-0 win over No. 26 Lake Central at
Kuntz Stadium Oct. 29 in the semifinal round of the girls soccer state
finals.

Lake Central fans, who had just watched their boys team lose a
shootout in their semifinal match against North Central (Indianapolis),
held onto hope that the girls team could advance to tonightâ??s
championship match.

That hope was crushed early on as Zionsville senior Amber Cress
scored her 30th goal of the season just 3:32 into the contest to give
the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Cress received a cross from sophomore Leah
Einterz from the right side, stopping the ball with her right foot and
quickly firing a laser shot into the right side of the net.

Playing on its offensive half of the field nearly the entire match,
Zionsville (17-3-2) struck again less than 10 minutes later. With a
corner kick from the right side, sophomore Alex Jenkins headed the ball
off the pass into the net to increase the Eaglesâ?? advantage to 2-0 at
the 11:35 mark of the first half.

â??We start out with a ball of fire,â? said Zionsville coach John
Kluba. â??Our girls, the confidence level just picked up there (in taking
the early lead). They had that nervousness coming out, and to have that
edge off and be able to relax and play and not worry about being
penalized in case we did make a mistakeâ?¦

â??That was huge.â?

The Indians (15-6-2) were unable to muster any offense at all,
totaling just one shot in each half. Lake Centralâ??s first shot in the
game didnâ??t come until the 29:03 mark of the first 40 minutes.

Zionsville added an insurance goal to go up 3-0 early in the second
half on Einterzâ??s shot from 20 yards out with just under 30 minutes
left to go.

Lake Central never seriously threatened the Eaglesâ?? defense all day
as sophomore Jessica Fisher and junior Stephanie Murphy combined to
shut out the Indians.
