Jefferson’s volleyball team won just one match Sept. 23 in its own tournament,
but that victory was a huge milestone for coach Gail Gripe. The Bronchos’
25-15, 25-4 triumph over Peru
in pool play was the 600th of Gripe’s coaching career.
“This
year has been about coaching kids and not me winning,” said Gripe, whose
team is 2-19. “The most important thing me and my staff can do is get our kids
better so that by the end of the season we are a dangerous team.”
The
Bronchos started the season 0-13 but have won twice in the past week.
“We’re
playing a lot better now,” Gripe said. “They have improved a lot
since the beginning of the season.”
Gripe,
who is now 600-291, is in the midst of her 33rd season overall and 26th at
Lafayette Jeff. She has led the Bronchos to 10 sectional titles, seven regional
championships, and four trips to the state finals. Her 1993 squad was state
runner-up.
“I
hadn’t said a word all season to the kids or the coaches,” Gripe said.
“I really haven’t thought about it. I just have a passion for
coaching.”
