LAFAYETTE ?? The Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos must have been telling each other
the famous Yogi Berra slogan â??it’s never over till itâ??s overâ? toward the end of
the third quarter of their Sept. 29 Hoosier Crossroads Conference battle with Avon.
The Class 5A eighth-ranked Bronchos trailed the visiting Orioles
38-17 entering the final period, but quarterback Timmy Fogarty & crew thrilled
a Jeff homecoming crowd by roaring back to tie the game at 45 and send it into
overtime.
In
the first OT, both teams scored touchdowns. But with Avon
getting the ball first to start the second overtime, Jeff safety Blaine Koger
intercepted a pass in the end zone to give the ball to the Bronchos. Ryan Poxon
then ran nine yards for the winning score as the never-say-die Bronchos survived,
58-52, to improve their HCC record to 6-1.
The
double-OT comeback was surreal. Fogarty threw three interceptions and fumbled once
during the first three quarters of the game, but he made up for those miscues
by passing for 462 yards and three TDs, with two of the scores going to
homecoming king P.J. Tyson. Matt Vlahogeorge, meanwhile, ran for the six-yard
TD with 35 seconds to go in regulation that tied it up at 45.
This
football game was exciting for even the casual sports fan as fireworks went off
into the cool night air to cap off Jeff?s heroic homecoming comeback. Come back
later for the full game report from our friends at The Lafayette Journal and
Courier!
