SHELBYVILLE
ââ?¬â?? If there is such thing as a perfect quarter of basketball, Class 4A No. 11 Bloomington
South played Feb. 27 it in the Panthers 60-33 first-round Shelbyville Sectional
victory against arch-rival Bloomington North.

From the
opening tip, South hit the accelerator and never looked back. For the second
time this year, South blew out North (the Panthers drubbed North, 75-34, back
on Jan. 5).

The
Panthers shut out their northern neighbors in the first quarter behind solid
defense and good shooting. In the opening period, North missed all five of its
shots ââ?¬â?? three of which were blocked layups ââ?¬â?? and had seven turnovers while
South went 6 of 11 and had only one turnover.

The
Panthers held a 15-0 lead at the beginning of the second quarter and took a
31-10 lead into the half.

Any chance
the Cougars had at a comeback to begin the second half was sequestered by three
quick Panther 3-pointers. South took a 45-15 lead into the final eight minutes,
when Panthers coach J.R. Holmes played only reserves.

South
seniors Chad Sutor and Jordan Forney made life a living **** for Cougar
shooters inside all night long. Sutor blocked three shots to go with his
game-high 12 points and five rebounds, while Forney pulled down eight rebounds
to complement his 10 points and eight assists. Sophomore guard Jordan Hulls matched
Sutor by scoring 12 points.

North was
led in scoring by freshman guard Ray McCallum Jr. and sophomore Jake Mulinix,
who each scored 10 points.

The win
marks the fifth straight victory for the Panthers in the Bloomington city
rivalry, a surprising statistic since as little as four years ago the two teams
were playing in highly competitive games that favored the more tradition-rich
Cougars in many instances.

The
Panthers improve to 17-4 on the season and move on to a Friday semifinal date
with Columbus East (15-6), which defeated Shelbyville in the opening game, 68-49
(South pounded the Olympians 73-48 just four days after that initial Cougar
*******.)

North,
meanwhile, finishes the season with an 11-10 mark.
