BROWNSBURG
â??? All the chips were stacked against
the Plainfield
boys golf team April 28 at the Brownsburg Invitational at West Chase Golf Club.

The No. 8 Quakers
were going up against four other ranked teams: No. 1 Avon, No. 6 Noblesville,
No. 7 Center Grove, No. 11 Warsaw. They were coming off a night in which their
players did not get home until 3 or 4 a.m. because of prom. And they faced
windy conditions that wreaked havoc on all the competitors.

Yet Plainfield found a way to
fire a 292 and shock the 20-team field.

The
Quakers not only grabbed the trophy for first place, but they also had the
medalist at West Chase. Doug Kinney, Plainfieldâ??s
No. 3 golfer, fired a 2-under 69 in the difficult conditions for a three-stroke
victory over Pikeâ??s Brandon Wenger.

â??Iâ??m
unbelievably impressed, said Plainfield
coach Pat Cavanaugh. â??The late start time (1 p.m. ET) helped, but our guys were
in a good frame of mine and didnâ??t get down on theirselves.â?

Aside from
Kinneyâ??s 69, Plainfield
got a 72 from Kyle Dell, a 75 from Matt Tinkle, and a 76 from No. 1 man Zach
Treash.

The
Quakersâ?? score of 292 was 12 shots lower than second-place Avon
and 13 shots better than third-place Lafayette Jefferson. Of the other ranked
teams, Center Grove (308) was fifth, Noblesville (309) took sixth, and Warsaw (322) was 11th.

â??This
gives us big confidence â??? there were six or seven ranked teams here,â? said Cavanaugh,
alluding to third-place Lafayette Jeffâ??s honorable mention in this weekâ??s
coachesâ?? poll. â??Zach Treash struggled with putting but hit the ball solidly.
Kyle Dell is playing well but had some mishaps that hurt his score.

â??Other
than the 69, the guys finished about where I thought they would.

Avon, whom
Cavanaugh said was Plainfieldâ??s
natural rival, got a 75 from Blair Webb and a 76 from Ryan Wegeng. But the
Oriolesâ?? 304 was still well off Plainfieldâ??s
pace.

The other
surprise of the event was the performance of Lafayette Jeff. The Bronchos used
a 75 from Brian Wolpert and steady performances from the rest of their golfers
to card a 305.

â??Iâ??m very
happy, but we want to be playing our best golf in June,â? Cavanaugh said. â??We
will continue to work on 100 yards and in, including putting.
