COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. â??? More than 1,000 swimmers, including top U.S. Olympians, will travel to Indianapolis
for the 2007 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships July
31-Aug. 4 at the Indiana University Natatorium. Among the swimmers
expected at the meet are world record-holders Michael Phelps, Ryan
Lochte, Katie Hoff, Ian Crocker, and Kate Ziegler.

The event represents the last
long-course national championships
before the 2008 Olympic
Trials. Along with naming the 2007 national champions, the meet will also serve
as the selection meet for the 2007 Japan International Grand Prix to be
contested Aug. 21-24 in Chiba,
Japan
.

With
multiple world record-holders in attendance, Indianapolis will undoubtedly see some
incredibly fast swimming. On July 31, the 200-meter fly will be swum in the
presence of record-holder Phelps. The Aug. 1 schedule includes the 400
individual medley, an event that could potentially include the menâ??s (Phelps)
and womenâ??s (Hoff) world record-holders. Wednesday will also feature the 200 backstroke,
the event that launched Lochte into the individual world record club at the World
Championships.

On
Aug. 2, expect Crocker to swim his signature event, the 100 butterfly, where he
can defend his world record. Breaststroke will take center stage on Friday,
with Olympians Tara Kirk and Megan Jendrick expected to compete. The final day
of competition Aug. 4 is highlighted by the 200 IM, also a Phelps property, and
the 50 freestyle, starring defending world champion Ben Wildman-Tobriner.

Between
sessions each day, and following finals each evening, fans can enjoy the USA
Swimming Aqua Zone. The Aqua Zone is an outdoor exhibition featuring athlete
autographs, live radio remotes, interactive displays, giveaways, and sponsor
booths. Entrance to the Aqua Zone, located along New York Street, is free of charge.

Other
reasons to attend:

One year out
The
2007 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships will take place almost
exactly one year before the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China,
is expected to be the biggest sporting event in history. The meet offers an
opportunity for fans and spectators alike to catch U.S. Olympic heroes such as Phelps,
Hoff, Crocker, and Lochte as well as catch a glimpse of stars on the rise like Wildman-Tobriner
and the world-record-holding teenager Ziegler.

The worldâ??s fastest men/women
The
star-studded lineup in Indianapolis
will include a minimum of six long course world record-holders. Phelps, who is
fresh off four new individual world records at the World Championships, is
joined by newly crowned individual world record-holders Hoff, Ziegler, and Lochte.
Also swimming is the worldâ??s fastest man in the 100 fly, Crocker.

Come for the meet, stay for the fanfare
Open
between sessions and after finals each night, USA Swimmingâ??s Aqua Zone will be
a spectacle in itself. Boasting highlights such as athlete autograph sessions,
a visit by the Indianapolis Colts cheerleading squad, the Indianapolis Speedway
fan trailer, and a portable ice rink courtesy of the Indianapolis Ice, the
Nationals will be a major community event for the city of Indianapolis.

If these walls could talk
The
Indiana University Natatorium has seen its share of greatness, and its south
wall quite literally bears the marks of the achievements itâ??s seen. The main
competition pool has been proclaimed one of the fastest pools in the world,
with 93 American and 11 world records having been broken there. A total of 11
Olympic Team Trials have been held at the Natatorium since it opened in 1982.
The names of all the team members who have qualified in Indy also are inscribed
on the south wall of the Natatorium.

Lochte’s return
Before
the FINA World Championships in March, Lochte was best known for pushing world
record-holders Phelps and Aaron Peirsol to the wall race after race and
amassing a remarkable collection of silver medals. But Lochte turned heads and
shocked many when he unseated Peirsol, the American backstroke king, and set
his first individual long course world record at the FINA World Championships
by winning gold and climbing to the top of the podium in the 200 backstroke.
Lochte, who pulled out of the recent Santa Clara Grand Prix, will be swimming
in his first national meet since the stunning upset.

Making a splash in Indianapolis
The
USA Swimming Foundation will bring its national water safety initiative to Indianapolis for â??Make a
Splash Night on Aug. 3. The event will feature Olympic gold medalist and world
record-holder Janet Evans and will include the announcement of â??Make a Splash
Water Safety Week in Indianapolis.
