Executive Director
ZIONSVILLE
ââ?¬â?? I went to a rather insignificant football game Sept. 28 between Zionsville
and Fishers. It was an entertaining game but by no means a thriller. When all
was said and done ââ?¬â?? I HAD A GREAT TIME! Why?
Because Zionsville High School knows how to put on a
football game.
Check out
this radical idea. The Eagles have a marching band that really marches, and
it even does it before the game ââ?¬â?? on the field! People actually stood in the
stands just before the game because this band actually played the school fight
song.
Think
about that. A fight song played live by high school musicians who are actually
marching, or at least standing in formation on the field. They even had a
routine from the flag corp.
It almost
seems like, dare I say, the way it ought to be.
But the
Eagles donââ?¬â?¢t stop there. They actually announce starting lineups ââ?¬â?? in an
enthusiastic manner. As if that werent enough, this school even has cheerleaders
ââ?¬â?? who actually lead cheers!
To top it
all off, they even have an annoying public address announcer. Seriously, I say
that lovingly. His name is Jim Metzer, and he is everything you could ever want
in a PA announcer.
The home
fans are going to love him. The visiting fans are going to **** him. And, if
you are neutral, you are at least going to remember him. This guy is truly a
treasure.
The people
in the press box were friendly and helpful, and the facility was clean and
well-lighted. It was a good crowd, and a goodly number of the spectators were
little kids or junior high students.
A game in
Zionsville is still a happening, and it is a gratifying sight. My hat goes off
to athletic director Mark Preston and his staff. It also goes off to a music
sponsor who understands that one of the most valuable roles of a high school
band is to engender school spirit, and the best place to do that is at athletic
events.
Folks,
high school sports is and always has been the best value in athletic entertainment.
Unfortunately, some schools have forgotten there is more to the entertainment
than just the play on the field.
Zionsville
is to be complimented on remembering that the game is only part of the show.
