STATE FINALS: Fishers completes perfect season by holding off charging Slicers from LaPorte

TERRE HAUTE ?? Most
of the talk leading up to the Oct. 27 boys IHSAA state cross country
finals surrounded second-year school Fishers and its ability to win its
first-ever state championship title in any sport.

Well, the Tigers were victorious. But man, was it close …

Standing in the chute trying to perform the “mental math” in the moments following the race was a head-scratching experience as runners came in left and right.

Though both squads had mutliple front runners, it came down to the fifth runners to decide the outcome.

Fishers’ Tyler Stegman crossed the line in 72nd place overall, just ahead of LaPorte’s Corey Dillon who finished seconds later in 75th.

One could look at things that way or one could point to the fact that Fishers’ #2 man Cale Allen finished in seventeenth place while the 2-3 men from LaPorte (Matthew Miller and Tyler Toll) edged out Tigers senior Nate Piggush places later.

That edge up front was too much for the Slicers to overcome as they were defeated by top-ranked Fishers 102-112.  It was one of the closest margins of victory in years.

All was not lost for LaPorte however as they did head back up north with the individual champion in senior Michael Fout.

Fout took charge from the start and never looked back as the Florida State recruit crossed the line in a time of 15:31, which was 25 seconds better than runner-up James Martin of Carroll (Allen).

Now, about Martin…

The FRESHMAN, yes FRESHMAN from northeast Indiana ran like an experienced senior.  Martin took control of the “best of the rest” long after Fout had the race in hand, and held on all the way to a runner-up finish.

It was the highest finish EVER for a freshman in the IHSAA state finals, as former Franklin Central star Aaron Fisher finished sixth in 1997.

We all know what kind of career Fisher went on to have  (three individual state championships).

The most amazing thing about Martin’s effort was that it seemed to surprise everyone…except for him.

Imagine the pure excitement of a 15-year old crossing the line as the individual runner-up in his first ever state finals.

Martin hid it well.  The Charger freshman crossed the line and didn’t even crack a smile.  Almost as if he were saying “I’ll be here again.”

It was a day full of surprises as Carmel, Northridge, and Franklin all received podium recognition for they rounded out the top five teams.

More state finals coverage and minutia will come as the week progresses.

Here are your complete results Oct. 27 from the 62nd Annual IHSAA Boys Cross Country State Finals held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.
