The Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association has named the Indiana High School Swimmer of the Year for 2007-08 Boys Swimming and Diving. This award, which honors the finest swimmers and divers in the state of Indiana based on performances at the IHSAA state finals, is calculated using the Power Point tables published by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association.
The Indiana Swimmer of the Year is sophomore Kyle Whitaker of Chesterton, the state champion in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Whitaker’s time of 1:46.75 in the 200 IM not only set a new national public high school record, but it also earned him the Indiana Swimming and Diving Performance of the Year.
Whitaker, whose winning time in the 100 fly was :48.44, had a combined total of 329 power points – the most by any boy since the award has been given out.
Whitaker’s coach, Kevin Kinel, was named the Indiana High School Boys Swimming & Diving State Coach of the Year. The Chesterton boys won the state championship for the first time in school history.
