BG Seymour Inv.: Bloomington North topples four ranked teams

It was hardly a day made for golf, but the Bloomington North boys made the most of the situation March 29 at Shadowood. The Cougars, who received honorable mention status in the golf coaches’ preseason poll, fought the elements as much as competition that included four ranked teams on the way to an 11-shot victory in the Seymour Invitational.

Bloomington North used consistency among all five players to card a 322 for the day. That easily outdistanced fifth-ranked city rival Bloomington South (333), while unranked Jasper claimed third place with a 338. Ranked schools No. 4 Lafayette Jefferson (340), No. 19 Columbus North (346), and No. 15 Bedford North Lawrence (354), finished fifth, sixth, and seventh, respectively.

The teams waited through a 90-minute delay at the start of play due to frost. Yes, I said frost. When players were allowed to take the course, they suffered through extremely windy and cold conditions all day long.

The weather affected play for everyone in the field, but Bloomington North appeared to handle it the best. The Cougars’ top three players – Casey Deal, Joseph Hoke, and Bobby Santarossa – all shot 80 on the day. Meanwhile, freshman Ben Eudaly fired an 82 and Ryan Crowe completed the scoring with an 86.

It was an amazingly consistent performance considering the conditions. A measure of just how difficult the conditions were can be found in the fact that 22 golfers carded scores of over 90. Mother Nature started to gain the upper hand again late in the match as the Cougars were 14 over par on the last three holes of competition.

On this day, though, those struggles had no impact on the outcome.

Jacob Hocum of Lafayette Jefferson and Tyler Duncan of Columbus North took medalist honors with 77s. They were followed closely by Kyle Perry of Bloomington South, who carded a 78.
