The St. Vincent Sports Medicine’s “Spirit of Sport” Athletic Recognition Dinner 2008 will take place Sunday, July 13, and HoosierAuthority.com is your headquarters for all things leading up to the big event. There are seven categories of awards for athletes, teams, coaches, student managers, and student trainers based on their integrity, wisdom, community service, and gifts, both in the classroom and on the field.

One of three reports on Awards Day brings you the Spirit of Sport Award (Male). This award is presented to a male who best exhibits all of St. Vincent Sports Medicine’s core values, including service, integrity, reverence, creativity, wisdom, and dedication. The list …

•    Kevin McCarthy, Zionsville
•    After three seasons as a member of the boys soccer team, Kevin changed his focus to cross country and track & field his senior season. The result was a berth in the boys track state finals in two events. His success is not surprising as this Eagle also carried a 3.8 GPA while participating in several service organizations.

•    Ben Wachtel, Westfield
•    It is widely known that Ben was a two-time state champion in both the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle while swimming at Westfield. What is not as commonly known is that he swam the finals of those events his senior season with a broken foot. That is not surprising. This Shamrock’s dedication to everything he does is legendary. Whether it is his effort in the classroom or in gathering and sending text books to a Kenyan elementary school, Ben only knows one way to perform – all out.

•    Nathan Sprenkel, Zionsville
•    A two-year starter on the Zionsville boys soccer team, Nathan has set numerous goalkeeping records at the school. He also carries a GPA in the top 10 percent of his class. Nathan has embraced his duties as a role model for upcoming Eagle athletes, often taking the time to speak before youth sports groups.

•    John Ockerson, Indianapolis Scecina
•    John graduated No. 2 in his class at Scecina. He did so while a four-year member of both the football and boys basketball programs. His maturity has been a building block for the entire Crusader athletic program, and he has been recognized numerous times as All-Conference for his exploits.

•    Daniel Kleinschmidt, Indianapolis Chatard
•    Daniel will be remembered as one of the legendary student athletes in the storied athletic history of Chatard. He was a member of the state championship football teams and the Trojan boys basketball program. In the classroom, he earned a 4.46 GPA. This extraordinary young man is also self taught on two musical instruments and is an accomplished composer.

•    Dylan Sorensen, Zionsville
•    Dylan was an All-State boys cross country performer at Zionsville and a state qualifier in track & field. Off the field, he was an active member of student council and the Eagle Leaders program.

•    Alex Kovach, Zionsville
•    Leadership by example is the hallmark of this young man. Alex has not only been a four-year athlete, but he compiled a 4.224 GPA in the classroom. He is an Eagle in more than one way, having earned the honor of Eagle Scout. His time at Zionsville has been marked by commitment to several community service projects.
