EDITORIAL: St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards should be applauded

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

As a reader of HoosierAuthority.com, you have undoubtedly noticed that we have given a LOT of play in recent weeks to the St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards that were held July 13 in Indianapolis. There is a reason for that.

These awards represent everything good about sport.

Let’s get a couple of things straight right off the bat. Yes, heartstring-tugging content gets read. Yes, St. Vincent Sports Medicine is a client of Hoosier Authority.

I can tell you without hesitation, however, that neither of those factors have anything to do with my claiming that these awards should be championed by every sports fan in Central Indiana.

We all love the games. We all get excited by the spectacular play or great athletic moment. In the end, though, it is the inner strength of the athlete that we all champion.

Is there anyone here who isn’t moved by a story of an athlete overcoming adversity? Don’t we all revere the coach whom we know cared about us as people more than he or she cared about wins and losses?

Well, those are the kind of things these awards are all about.

Hoosier Authority sat down with St. Vincent Sports Medicine Director Ralph Reiff, and it didn’t take long to see the sincerity of purpose behind this evening – click here to see that interview!

There is another world in sport that many fans never see. It is the world of agony, effort, and redemption that does not always show itself on Friday nights. Nonetheless, whether we realize it or not, it is what keeps us coming back.

These awards represent that world.

The Spirit of Sport Awards nearly tripled in attendance and participation in their second year. We believe they should grow far larger.

It is, after all, one of the highlight nights of the year.
