Westfield swimmer Ben Wachtel received the prestigious “Service to the Poor” Award at the second annual St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards held July 13.
Wachtel, who won state championships in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events this past winter despite having a broken right foot, has made quite an impact on the lives of the less fortunate outside of the pool. In fact, Ben is one of the founding members of the Westfield chapter of Amnesty International.
As part of his involvement with the organization, he helped orchestrate this past school year at the high school a book drive that collected reading materials to send to children living in Darfur, Sudan.
Ben will swim collegiately at Purdue University, where he hopes to build upon swimming accomplishments that include winning a total of four state championships his final two years at Westfield.
HoosierAuthority.com Executive Director Mike McGraw and St. Vincent Sports Medicine’s Ralph Reiff had a chance to visit with Wachtel at this year’s Spirit of Sport Awards ceremony. Click here to watch the interview!
