The South scored on the game’s first play from scrimmage – a 65-yard touchdown pass from former Perry Meridian quarterback Adam Weise to wide receiver Tandon Doss of Ben Davis – of the 42nd Annual Grange Insurance/IFCA North-South All-Star Game, and the South lived up to pre-game expectations by pulling away in the second half of a 34-14 victory July 18 at North Central (Indianapolis).

Weise was selected as the game’s most valuable player as well as MVP for the South, while Lafayette Jefferson QB Tim Fogarty was named North MVP.

The South squad, led by Pike coach Derek Moyers, came out very aggressive in the first half as witnessed by the game’s opening play that put the South up 7-0 just seconds into the contest.

The North responded with a more conservative approach on the next drive. Using some short passes mixed in with a few running plays, Valparaiso QB Alex Sarkisian led his team down to 3rd and goal inside the 5-yard line. He was able to make the best out of a busted play from the 4, getting the North on the board and tying the game 7-7.

The South again showed why they were the favorite, though, as Jewel Hampton of Warren Central returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards all the way back for a score. Hampton would end up leaving the game late in the final minutes with an injured left hand.

Fogarty again found the end zone in the second quarter, this time through the air as he hooked up with Brady Young from Delta for a 30-yard score to draw the North even once again at 14.

Facing a tough and determined South defense that on this night featured defensive end Robert Maci from Indianapolis Cathedral and defensive back Maurice Berryhill of Indianapolis Arlington, however, that was all the scoring the North could muster,

Weise, on the other hand, found Carmel WR Jordan Brewer for a 22-yard TD to put the South up for good, 21-14, with five minutes to go in the first half.

The South added two more scores for good measure in the third quarter – a 14-yard pass from Danville QB Colton Cooper to WR Jared Blue of Vincennes Lincoln, and another Weise TD pass to WR Kyle Dietrick of Indianapolis Chatard.

With the win, the South improves its lead in the series to 23-19.
