FB: Week 2 staff picks

By The Waterboy
Contributing Water

Here we go again for Week 2 of the Indiana high school football season. Several big games highlight the schedule, including Warren Central and Indianapolis Cathedral each traveling to Ohio to take part in the Kirk Herbstreit Challenge, Penn visiting Ben Davis, and a great crosstown rivalry in Columbus East traveling to Columbus North.

Before we get started, let’s take a quick look back to last week’s standings. Managing Editor Shawn Aylsworth had a case of beginner’s luck, going 12-3, while Executive Director Mike McGraw and I tied at 11-4. Hoosier Crossroads Conference guru Eric Eaton needs to catch up after a 9-6 outing last weekend.

Editor (Shawn) note: Whatever, dude.

Standings after Week 1:

Shawn 12-3
Waterboy 11-4
Mike 11-4
Eric 9-6

To the games! (Rankings are from The Waterboy.)

4A #1 Columbus East (1-0) at 5A # 5 Columbus North (1-0)
Waterboy: Columbus East wins in a shootout.
Mike: East over North.
Eric: Columbus East.
Shawn: East

3A #10 Crawfordsville (0-1) at Danville (0-1)
Waterboy: Crawfordsville uses a dominating ground attack to win this one.
Mike: Danville, only because they are at home.
Eric: Danville
Shawn: Crawfordsville

Decatur Central (1-0) at 5A #4 Pike (1-0)
Waterboy: Pike wins a close one at home. Decatur Central is a lot better than people think.
Mike: Pike
Eric: Pike
Shawn: Um, Pike. And it won’t be close, either, W-W-W-W-WATERBOY!

Fishers (1-0, 1-0) at 5A #6 Hamilton Southeastern (1-0, 1-0)
Waterboy: I’ll take the upset. Fishers will take advantage of several HSE turnovers, and the Royals won’t be able to steal this one like they did last week.
Mike: HSE. Fishers is good. but they’re not quite there yet.
Eric: HSE
Shawn: Fishers

Indianapolis Arlington (1-0) at Whiteland (1-0)
Waterboy: Rob Patchett is one heck of a coach, and the Golden Knights will stun a lot of people this weekend.
Mike: Whiteland, and it will not be close.
Eric: Arlington
Shawn: Arlington

4A # 10 Roncalli (1-0) at 5A # 7 Franklin Central (1-0)
Waterboy: I said last week I wanted to see how the Flashes did without Darius Willis, and I was impressed. I’ll take Franklin Central in another tough 17-14 game.
Mike: Roncalli
Eric: Roncalli
Shawn: Franklin Central

5A #10 Penn (0-1) at 5A #9 Ben Davis (1-0)
Waterboy: The Giants ran all over a porous Perry Meridian defense last week, and it will happen again tonight. Ben Davis in a rout.
Mike: Ben Davis
Eric: Ben Davis
Shawn: Ben Davis

1A #1 Sheridan (1-0) at Hamilton Heights (0-1)
Waterboy: Sheridan wins big, and Bud Wright passes Chris Geesman for second on the all-time coaching wins list with 340. By the way, if Nick Zachery doesn’t win Mr. Football, the guys handing out the award need their heads examined.
Mike: Sheridan
Eric: Sheridan
Shawn: Duh

Terre Haute North (0-1) at Terre Haute South (0-1)
Waterboy: Second-year coach Mark Raetz has the Braves going in the right direction. South wins going away.
Mike: South
Eric: Terre Haute South
Shawn: South

5A #3 Warren Central (1-0) at Huber Heights (OH)
Waterboy: Second consecutive week that Indiana football will be showcased on national television. If you haven’t figured it out yet, Indiana football is catching up quickly to the big states. Warren wins big.
Mike: Warren Central
Eric: Warren Central
Shawn: Warren

4A #3 Indianapolis Cathedral (0-1) at Canton McKinley (OH)
Waterboy: The Irish win big against an overmatched opponent.
Mike: Cathedral
Eric: Cathedral
Shawn: Cathedral. Which, by the way, is an EXCELLENT Van Halen song. Off “Diver Down.” Check it out. Really.

3A #5 Brebeuf (1-0) at Guerin Catholic (1-0)
Waterboy: Brebeuf wins a close game.
Mike: Brebeuf
Eric: Brebeuf
Shawn: Brebeuf

Harding (1-0) at Fort Wayne Dwenger (1-0)
Waterboy: Harding in a tight one.
Mike: Dwenger
Eric: Dwenger
Shawn: With Gustav appearing to be gaining strength and heading toward New Orleans, I will take Dwenger’s Saints to go marching on.

4A #9 Jasper (1-0) at Southridge (1-0)
Waterboy: Jasper
Mike: Jasper
Eric: Jasper
Shawn: Southridge

Lawrence Central (1-0) at North Central (Indianapolis) (0-1)
Waterboy: Lawrence Central has a great chance to surprise some people in Conference Indiana this year under new coach Jayson West. On the other side of the coin, I would be very surprised if North Central wins three games this year. I’ll take the Bears.
Mike: Lawrence Central
Eric: Lawrence Central
Shawn: LC was 5-5 my senior season, when I had exactly eight passes thrown my way at wide receiver. Four of them were intercepted, and I stretched as far as I could into the air to scratch that last overthrown pass with the middle fingernail of my left hand. Fortunately, I learned how to write.
