NOTE: Our story-loading site was down for about 36 hours, so we’re playing catch-up! The staff picks were, indeed, submitted in time on Friday.

As Week 6 begins, we are two-thirds through the high school football season, and tournament time draws near. Speaking of tournaments, let’s check out the overall standings in the staff picks competition:

Week 5 results
Eric        14-1
Waterboy    13-2
Shawn        12-3
Mike        12-3

Overall standings
Shawn        50-10        –
Eric        49-11        1
Mike        45-15        5
Waterboy    44-16        6

The cupboard is bare when it comes to big-name matchups, but there are still plenty of opportunities for entertainment this Friday night. To the picks!

Concord (5-0) @ 2A #4 Jimtown (4-1)
Waterboy: Jimtown. The Jimmies win a tough one at home.
Mike: Concord. Too big a step this time around for the Jimmies.
Eric: Concord
Shawn: The Minutemen, a two-touchdown power numbers favorite, undoubtedly have been drooling all week looking back at last year’s 35-14 drubbing in this game. Can you say motivation?

Evansville Central (4-1) at 4A #8 Evansville Reitz (4-1)
Waterboy: Another game at the Reitz Bowl. I’ll take the home team.
Mike: Reitz
Eric: Reitz
Shawn: Reitz

2A #5 Fairfield (5-0) @ Angola (4-1)
Waterboy: Fairfield
Mike: Fairfield. Angola was revealed against Churubusco.
Eric: Fairfield
Shawn: The unbeaten Falcons have outscored five foes 278-49. Since the name on this week’s opponent’s jerseys doesn’t say “Jimtown” – the Jimmies have ruined perfect seasons the last two years by beating the Falcons in the sectional – I’ll take Fairfield.

Fountain Central (3-2) @ Seeger (3-2)
Waterboy: Seeger
Mike: Seeger. Don’t be rediculous
Eric: Seeger
Shawn: McLovin, learn how to spell “ridiculous.” I’ll take “Seger.”

Hobart (5-0) @ 4A #2 Lowell (5-0)
Waterboy: I’ll take the Red Devils.
Mike: Hobart
Eric: Lowell
Shawn: W-W-W-Waterboy, how can you not have 5-0 Hobart ranked? The Brickies beat 5A Crown Point and shut out Griffith! This is the state’s ONLY game between unbeatens, and your (un)rankings tarnish that fact. I must take Hobart just for spite (plus, I’ll be doing a story off it by listening over the Internets). Boo to yooooooo …

4A #10 Roncalli (3-2) vs. 4A #3 Indianapolis Cathedral (3-2)
Waterboy: The Irish win another close one.
Mike: Cathedral
Eric: Cathedral
Shawn: Cathedral. And no, it won’t be close.

5A #6 Lawrence Central (5-0) @ 5A #9 Bloomington South (4-1)
Waterboy: Bloomington South won’t be able to stop the run. I’ll take the Bears.
Mike: LC. The Bears are the best in Conference Indiana.
Eric: Lawrence Central
Shawn: McLovin, that doesn’t say much this year. Alma Mater had an unbeaten, highly ranked Bloomington South team on the ropes back in ’83 till Lynn Churchill busted a fullback dive for about 65 yards and a score. D’oh. Payback some quarter century later will be suh-weet!

1A #5 Linton (5-0) @ North Daviess (4-1)
Waterboy: Linton
Mike: Linton
Eric: Linton
Shawn: Linton has shut out its last three opponents 119-0, and the Miners beat North Daviess 14-zip last year. But that was at home, and I road-tripped to suburban Elnora earlier this year for a boys basketball regional. Jungle karma for the host Cougars.

5A #8 Pike (3-2) @ Columbus North (3-2)
Waterboy: Columbus North. The Bulldogs get a little payback for the semistate loss last year.
Mike: Pike
Eric: Pike
Shawn: W-W-W-Waterboy, learn how to spell “Bull Dogs.” I’ll take “Pyke.”

Portage (4-1) @ Chesterton (4-1)
Waterboy: Portage
Mike: Portage
Eric: Chesterton
Shawn: Classic letdown scenario for the host Trojans, fresh off their 12-10 offensive slugfest W over Valparaiso. Despite the fact that I played slow-pitch softball this week against a dude from Portage who jacked a ball about 25 feet over the fence, I am sticking with the home team – the Indians’ 21-6 loss at Crown Point last week is enough to scare me off.

Tri-West Hendricks (4-1) @ Crawfordsville (3-2)
Waterboy: Tri-west
Mike: Tri-West
Eric: Tri-West
Shawn: Puh-leez. Yes, C-ville got beat by Beech Grove last week. But the Athenians hung with high-powered West Lafayette in Week 1 and are home for this one, plus they play a tougher schedule. Y’all can have your Bruins.

3A #2 West Lafayette (5-0) @ Rensselaer (3-2)
Waterboy: West Lafayette
Mike: West Lafayette. Again, don’t be rediculous.
Eric: West Lafayette
Shawn: McLovin, did you take any English classes at Twin Lakes OR IU?!?! “West Loffy-ett” by a bunch.

Harrison (West Lafayette) (3-2) @ Zionsville (3-2)
Waterboy: Harrison
Mike: Harrison
Eric: Harrison
Shawn: Yes

Lawrence North (2-3) @ 5A #3 Center Grove (4-1)
Waterboy: I know, I know – why is LN up here? The Wildcats have been playing better lately and have enough athletes to put a scare into any team. I’ll still take the Trojans.
Mike: Center Grove
Eric: Center Grove
Shawn: OMG. W-W-W-Waterboy, have you SEEN Center Grove play? Trojans by 30.

2A #1 Heritage Christian (5-0) @ Beech Grove (2-3)
Waterboy: I’ll take Heritage Christian in a shootout. If I were a bookie, the over/under on this game would be about 90 points.
Mike: Heritage Christian. What on Earth is this game doing on here?
Eric: Heritage Christian
Shawn: Great. Between me and my Sagarin ratings and The Waterboy’s longings for illegal backroom parlay carding, we are on the verge of Las Vegas East. The shootout will be one-sided, son – HC.
