INDIANAPOLIS – In only the fifth-ever state championship game to reach double overtime, top-ranked Princeton somehow managed to overcome an incredible 40-point performance by No. 7 Rochester’s Bruce Grimm Jr. and capture the Class 3A title March 28 at Conseco Fieldhouse, 81-79.
The victory, Princeton’s first in any sport in the school’s history, capped an unblemished season for the Gibson County school at 29-0. That’s only the 11th time an undefeated team has won the crown in the tournament’s 99 years.

Rochester’s Schoen named Mental Attitude Award winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Rochester’s Brody Schoen as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, will present a $1,000 scholarship to Rochester in his name.
The award, named in honor of Arthur L. Captain of the Zebra basketball team, Brody is ranked fifth in his class of 125 and will graduate with an honors diploma in the spring. Rochester’s representative at the IHSAA Student Leadership Conference last summer, he is active in his community as a member of the Grace United Methodist Youth Group, is a Park Program supervisor, and umpires youth league baseball games.
At Rochester, Schoen is treasurer of the Key Club and National Honor Society and a member of the Calculus and Captain’s clubs. He was starting quarterback on back-to-back conference championship teams and was named to the Academic All-State football team this past season. He participates in golf and is an all-conference shortstop for the Zebra baseball team.
The son of Bobby and Lori Schoen of Rochester will attend DePauw University in Greencastle and study business and math.
