Top-ranked Roncalli ruled the roost at the annual high-profile Hall of Fame Tournament featuring the state’s nine top-ranked teams as well as four other ranked schools Aug. 29 in this 13-team event held at the 4,575-yard, par-70 Greensburg Country Club (rating 68.0, slope 117).
The Rebels shot a 311, six strokes better than No. 4 Martinsville and eighth-ranked Richmond, to capture the crown. No. 5 Columbus North was five shots back in fourth, with No. 11 DeKalb (325) fifth, second-ranked Carmel (327) sixth, and No. 7 Penn seventh at 333.
“The golf course was very hilly with tight, tree-lined fairways and undulated greens making for some challenging shots,” said 10th-year Carmel coach Ken Kelly. “We had too many big numbers on a few holes from our top three players that kept the team from challenging for the championship.”
Ariana Savich led the Greyhounds with a 78 to finish 11th, while teammates Briana Midkiff, Diana Poulin, and Hilary Givens all had 83s.
Kelsey Benson of runner-up Martinsville shot a 68 to record medalist honors.
Sixth-ranked Western (338) managed but a 10th-place finish, while No. 3 Hamilton Southeastern ended up 11th with a 340.
“We struggled with the tough greens and big trees,” said HSE coach Steve Guenin. “On a more positive note, Brooke Beegle’s 81 was good enough for 13th place, and Kelsey Smith shot a 36 on her back nine.”
