Sw: HSE wraps regular season with sweep at Lawrence North

INDIANAPOLIS – Hamilton Southeastern spoiled “Senior Night” at Lawrence North Jan. 26 by sweeping a dual swimming meet.

The fourth-ranked HSE boys won by a 114-72 count, while the No. 2 Southeastern girls prevailed 109-77 over the No. 11 host Wildcat females.

“Both teams finished out their dual-meet seasons with wins against Lawrence North in their brand-new pool,” said HSE coach Andy Pedersen. “There were quite a few good races despite the fact that we are getting so close to girls sectionals and the focus is starting to go toward the championship meets.”

HSE had six winners on the girls side: Carly Mercer (100-yard freestyle, 200 free), Aubrey Hertzler (50 free, 100 backstroke), Megan Schwartzkopf (500 free), Katrina Kain (1-meter diving). The Royals, meanwhile, had five boys winners: Marshall Osborne (200 free), Jacob Robinson (200 individual medley), Michael Dorman (diving), Nathan Kinney (100 butterfly), and Justin Rossillo (100 back).

The Royals also took four of the evening’s six relay races.

“We knew that we would have our work cut out for us with HSE,” said LN coach Mike Penrose. “Andy is a great coach that gets his teams in the Top 5 year in and year out. Their girls team is consistently challenging Carmel, and their boys are always tough.

“We had several good races tonight, especially the boys 200 free relay – that was an exciting race. I thought our girls team was a little off in the 200 free relay by how much we got beat, but we actually swam our season-best time – HSE just put up the fastest time in the state so far in the event.”

Lawrence North celebrated its five senior girls – Christina Noens (the 200 IM winner in 2:15.86), Lauren Wine, Rachel Sachs, Michelle Wagner, and Carolyn King – and four senior boys – Adam Ferendo (the 50 free winner in :21.99 and the 100 free champ in :48.57), Jack Alvarado, Jacob Patterson, and Christian Kautzman.

Laura Weiss (1:10.78 in the 100 ******) and Julie Ogden (:57.42 in the 100 fly) were the other females winners for Lawrence North, while John Christie (5:05.61 in the 500 free) and Dimas MacDonald (1:04.62 in the 100 ******) were the other boys winners. 

 

“I’m proud of my team and the way we performed. This was good for us going into sectionals and state,” Penrose said. “They were just too deep for us to be able to give them a run down the stretch.”
