Class 4A unranked Fishers opened its 2010 baseball season March 30 with a lopsided, record-setting victory at 2A top-ranked Elwood, 21-10.
Fishers set school records of runs scored (21) and hits (20) in a game while pounding out two home runs and six doubles.
“You look at the 21-10 score and you think that the game was sloppy, but honestly both teams just flat-out hit the ball,” said Fishers coach Matthew Cherry. “The errors that were made defensively for both teams were not a result of sloppy play.
“You have to give Elwood a lot of credit – (they’re) a very good ball club and will definitely compete for the 2A title. They answered every punch we threw in the first four innings before we broke the game open with six runs in the fifth.”
Junior second baseman Koby Orris had four hits, including a pair of doubles, and four runs batted in for Fishers. Senior center fielder Ben Taylor added three hits, including a home run and a double, and had five RBIs, while sophomore shortstop J.P. Pena had two hits, one of them a home run.
Fishers junior Nick Tirro picked up the win with just one earned run in three solid innings of relief for senior starter Matt Woosley – who lasted just one inning after giving up six hits and seven runs, all earned. Sophomore Drew Clark pitched the final three innings for the save for the Tigers, who lost the sectional opener last season to arch-rival Hamilton Southeastern.
The game got off to a crazy start as visiting Fishers plated three runs in the top of the first inning before Elwood answered with four in the bottom of the frame. Fishers got right back on the horse with five in the top of the second, but the Panthers responded with three more to trail just 8-6 entering the third.
The victorious Tigers plated one run in the third and held Elwood scoreless in the bottom, then added two runs in the fourth before exploding for six in the fifth. That made it 17-8 heading to the bottom of the fifth, more than the Panthers – who were eliminated by Heritage Christian in a regional semifinal last year – could reasonably overcome since this was not slow-pitch softball.
Next up for Fishers is the home opener March 31 against another ranked foe, 4A No. 4 Kokomo.
The box score (thank you, Fishers coach Matthew Cherry!):
