Indianapolis Lutheran pitcher Morgan Lewis became the first Class A player in history to be named Miss Softball as she led her South team to a first-ever sweep of the Indiana All-Star Classic June 26 at Ben Davis.
Madeline Brink of Castle, who was 4 for 4 with a game-winning RBI single in Game 2 and two scoreless innings pitched in the doubleheader’s opening game, was named the event’s most valuable player. The South defeated the North, 10-3 and 3-0.
Lewis finished her senior season 29-2 with an earned run average of 0.29 and 356 strikeouts. She also boasted a .527 batting average with 33 runs batted in. Lutheran fell, 1-0, to Riverton Parke in the 1A title game this year, and the Saints were state champions in 2007 and runner-up in 2009 with Lewis.
Avon’s Jenny Esparza, now pitching for Butler, won the award last year.
Lewis was the winning pitcher in Saturday’s opener, surrendering two hits and no earned runs while striking out two in two innings. She singled in the second game.
The South benefited from three-run homers in their opening-game romp by Hamilton Southeastern’s Taylor Rager and Lauren Schroeder of New Palestine.
