Fourth-ranked Center Grove handles MIC foe Lawrence North in three games

By Sarah Clough

Staff Writer

GREENWOOD — Class 4A No. 4 Center Grove defended its home court quite efficiently Sept. 20 as the Trojans swept 4A Lawrence North in three games, 25-18, 25-16, and 25-17.

The Wildcats constantly battled for an early upper hand throughout the match, but after a huge block or powerful swing, Center Grove would gain momentum and push for a big point lead.

Although the scores donâ??t show how close the games really were, Lawrence North showed a ton of potential within the first 15 points of each game. The Wildcats put up strong blocks against Center Groveâ??s dominating hitters and placed smart shots to the center of the court, which proved to be one of Center Groveâ??s few weaknesses.

Lawrence Northâ??s downfall, though, stems from being a younger team. Three juniors and four sophomores make up over half the team, and one of the sophomores is the Wildcatsâ?? starting outside hitter. Such a young team has not yet developed the mental strength and focus to win against a strong competitor such as CG.

Physically, the youthful Wildcats look as if they could contend for next yearâ??s Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference champions. But until they develop that mental strength, they continue to allow themselves to accept defeat before a game is even over. This lack of longevity was most evident in the second game after sophomore outside hitter Brittany Daulton received a yellow card for shouting after the referee called her under the net.

Daulton dwelled on the call until the second game ended, and her anger affected the entire team. Her own play lowered to the point that Center Groveâ??s coach, Deb McClurg, started signaling her players to purposely serve at Daulton. The rest of the Lawrence North team was on edge, and the Wildcats drew yet another yellow card during the game, allowing themselves to get frustrated with referee calls rather than concentrating on the next point.

The Wildcats regained their composure entering the third game, but Center Groveâ??s two-game advantage fired up the Trojans, and their defense never wavered. The Trojans covered their hitters, picked up the blocks, and scrambled for shanked passes, often bringing them back into play. And Center Grove passed extremely well on serve receive.

Center Groveâ??s junior outside hitter, Mandy Nichols, controlled the net as she reached over and around blocks and created a wall on defense. Middle blocker Megan Rehmer, meanwhile, posed a larger threat than her size hints at. With speed and a huge vertical jump working for her, Rehmer effectively ran slides on the right side as well as the middle to get around the Lawrence North block.

Center Groveâ??s strong, consistent play surely will keep the Trojans at a top spot in the 4A rankings.

Top-ranked Park Tudor reaches Marion County finals with 4-1 win over No. 3 North Central

By Adam Rouse

Staff Writer

INDIANAPOLIS â??? Park Tudorâ??s No. 1-ranked boys tennis team easily swung by No. 5 North Central (Indianapolis) with a 4-1 win Sept. 22 in the semifinal round of the Marion County Tournament.

The Panthers cruised to victory by winning the first four matches and dropping only one set.

â??We just have a nice, solid, deep team,â? said Park Tudor coach Dave Heffern. â??We donâ??t have any real weaknesses. If we play well, we will win.â?

The victory over North Central comes on the heels of beating No. 3 Brebeuf, 3-2, Sept. 21. Park Tudor began the county tournament with a 5-0 victory Sept. 20 over Warren Central.

â??Today was just another example of another nice team effort,â? Heffern said.

The Panthers will face the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Lawrence Central and Perry Meridian Sept. 23.

At No. 1 singles, Park Tudorâ??s Will Pearson downed Will Armstrong, 6-3, 6-1, while Michael Rardon (6-2, 6-0) took care of business in quick fashion by only losing two games to North Centralâ??s Max Shelton in the No. 3 singles match.

Yale Reardon (No. 2 singles) took home the only win for North Central on the day with a tough 6-4, 6-4 win over Alex Leopold.

At No. 1 doubles, it was an up-and-down effort for Kent Winingham and Michael Cournoyer of Park Tudor, who took the first set, 6-2, only to fall, 6-1, in the second to David Lett and David Dietz. The Panther duo, however, came back strong in the third set to win, 6-2.

The No. 2 doubles team of Nick Perdue and Robby Talbert needed only two sets to discard David Moss and Max Newman of North Central, 6-2, 6-2.

After winning the Marion County Tournament in 2003, Park Tudor fell to Brebeuf last year in the championship match, 3-2.
