#21 Warren Central narrowly defeats field in classic Marion County battle

By Brandon Jones
Running Sports Coordinator

Everyone knew that the boys Marion County title was up for grabs, but few would have predicted that it would have been this close.

In a battle that came down the the final stretch of the race, it was the two-time defending state champions that were victorious once the final tallies were added.

The Warriors finished with 92 points, just one better than #17 Franklin Central, and two better than #18 Ben Davis.

Franklin Central’s Scott Lasiter showed that he has returned to form following last week’s scary incident in northeast Indiana where he was forced to drop out of the race after stepping on a golf tee.

His time of 15:55 was six seconds better than that of runner-up Andy Wilson of Ben Davis.

Warren Central’s Caleb Pack used a massive final kilometer to take home third over Lance Nelson of Southport, a move that would ultimately give county honors to his team.

Here are the individual results from Saturday’s race:

Instant Classic: 5A #4 Carmel 42, 5A #6 Warren 35

By Brandon Jones
All-Purpose Writer

CARMEL â??? For all the offense (a combined 77 points and 965 yards of offense)
that lit up the scoreboard Sept. 28 at Carmel High School,
it was a defensive play in the final minute that was the decisive factor.

In a
classic, back-and-forth contest between the two Metropolitan Interscholastic
Conference schools that met in the RCA Dome last November for the Class 5A
state title, the fourth-ranked Greyhounds (6-1 overall, 4-1 MIC) redeemed
themselves with a 42-35 triumph over the sixth-ranked, four-time defending state
champions from Indyâ??s eastside.

The
backfield duo of junior quarterback Morgan Newton (17 rushes for 181 yards,
three touchdowns) and senior running back Aaron King (24 carries for 136 yards)
was just too much for Warren Central (4-3, 4-1) as the Greyhounds amassed 470
yards of total offense.

That
outburst was barely enough to trump a Warren Central attack paced by running
back Jewel Hampton, who carried 18 times for 271 yards and two TDs â??? the second
time this year that the Warrior senior has racked up more than 270 yards in a
loss.

Carmel was forced to punt on its opening
possession, and the visitors wasted little time in taking the capacity crowd
(nearly an estimated 9,000) out of the game.

On the
Warriorsâ?? first play from scrimmage, it was senior quarterback Logan Worley on
a 63-yard keeper up the middle to the Greyhoundsâ?? 1-yard line. Though it would
take two more plays, Worley found senior wideout William Campbell just inside
the pylon on a pretty play-action strike.

The hosts
would respond as it seemed they would all evening long. Carmel used a much more methodical attack,
driving 78 yards in a tiring 13 plays. It was the combination of Newton and King that did
the majority of the damage, with King plunging in from a yard out to knot the
score at 7 late in the opening period.

The
defending champs would not lie down, however, as their big-play capabilities
showed on the next drive. Thatâ??s when Hampton
took a pitch 71 yards up the right sideline on the Warriorsâ?? third play,
allowing the visitors to regain momentum at 14-7.

Another
time-consuming drive stretching midway through the second period for Carmel, though, would
make it an entirely new ballgame for the third time. A 13-play drive did the
damage as the â??Hounds took 5:17 off the clock, the score coming on an 11-yard
connection from Newton
to senior wide receiver Jordan Brewer.

After a Warren three-and-out, the
hosts would gain their first lead of the contest.

After a
personal foul on a punt, Carmel set up in Warren territory at the
47. This time it took the Greyhounds just seven plays, with the big three of Newton, King, and Brewer
providing the offense.

Newton
walked into the end zone on a gorgeous quarterback keeper that had everyone in the
monstrous throng fooled, and the place went nuts as the Greyhounds gained a
21-14 advantage with just over two minutes remaining in the opening half.

Plenty of
time, in other words, for Warren Centralâ??s high-octane offense.

After a
pair of short passes, Worley found junior running back George Cheesebourough
running down the sideline in single coverage. Though he was pressured heavily,
Worley stepped up in the pocket and delivered a beautiful arching strike to
place the visitors on the Carmel
21.

Four plays
later, Worley took it up the left side on an option keeper from six yards out.
We would go into the locker room knotted up at 21 apiece.

The
defenses stepped up early in the second half as the teams traded punts on their
first possessions. But with the big-play potential of these two historically
dominant schools, the offenses would once again become the story line.

After a Carmel punt, Warren
Central did it to the â??Hounds once again. The first play from scrimmage was a
63-yard breakaway touchdown run by Hampton,
putting the visitors in possession of momentum and the lead at 28-21.

It
appeared that the Carmel
offense was now rattled. On a crucial third and long in his own territory, Newton threw into double
coverage. Warren defensive back James Manual
capitalized with an interception, and it appeared that the Warriors â??? as they
had done to Carmel
in each of their last four meetings â??? would put this one away.

But not
this time.

Carmel returned the favor as senior Joe
Rippe intercepted a Worley pass on a vital third down. A jumper for the â??Hounds
track team in the spring, Rippe sprung into the air and came down with the
pigskin on his own 1-yard line.

Eleven
plays and 99 yards (yes, NINETY-NINE YARDS) later, Carmel plunged into the end zone to once
again tie the score up at 28.

Missed
tackles and deceptive offensive play-calling was the key for Carmel on this championship-caliber drive. Senior
Kurt Freytag put the points on the board from 24 yards out and, with eight
seconds remaining in the third quarter, we were back to where we started.

A
promising Warren Central drive that got into Greyhound territory stalled after
a false start on 4th and 8, causing Warren Central coach Steve
Tutsie to change his mind and send out the punting unit. Carmel
took over on its own 15 â?¦ and on the second play it was King slicing and dicing
his way through the Warren
defense.

His
77-yard run ended in controversy, though, before placing the Greyhounds on the
Warren Central 1. A late fumble on the carry by King sent the ball up and over
the orange pylon and out of bounds, begging the question:

Did it go
inside or outside the pylon?

After a
brief conference, the officials awarded the ball to Carmel. The â??Hounds scored on their very next
play on a one-yard run by Newton, and Carmel had regained the advantage at
35-28 midway through the final period.

Not to
sound like a broken record, but â?¦you guessed it. Warren Central responded in kind
on its next possession.

A
Carmel-like eight play, 72-yard drive was highlighted by a 28-yard connection
from Worley to junior Eric Williams on 4th and 1, and the drive was
finalized with a one-yard plunge from Worley.

With just
over four minutes to go, it was once again a tie ballgame, 35-35. The final
team to have possession of the ball, it seemed, would be victorious.

Carmel took over with 3:51 remaining, and a pair of 32-yard runs on its
second and third plays did in the fatigued Warren defense. The latter, a keeper by Newton, was the eventual deciding score as Carmel went up 42-35 with
3:04 remaining.

Warren
Central, which had no timeouts left, mounted a drive (of course!). A 31-yard
option pitch from Worley to Hampton
on 4th and 1 had everyone on the edge of their seats. After advancing the
pigskin to the Carmel
32 with 48 seconds remaining, the Warriors were forced to pass as they could
not stop the clock.

It was a
decision they would regret as Worley was picked off for the second time on a
pass into double coverage. Carmel
sophomore Chase Varndell leaped up to snare the pick, in the process putting
the final nail in the coffin.

The win
ties Carmel for
second in the MIC race with the Warriors. Both teams trail 5A top-ranked Center
Grove, which defeated Carmel
32-31 three weeks ago in double overtime.

Warren
Central hosts Center Grove Oct. 13, and a win by the hosts in that contest
would most likely result in a three-way tie atop the conference standings.

If we are
fortunate enough to see an encore in the RCA Dome this November, we should
consider ourselves very lucky.
