Top-ranked Westfield edges third-ranked Carmel for Hamilton County supremacy

Brandon Jones
Running Sports Coordinator

Top-ranked Westfield’s is once again proven as Indiana’s team to beat for the girls cross country state championship.  The ‘Rocks placed three runners in the top five spots and all five scorers in the top 14 positions to narrowly defeat third-ranked Carmel at Tuesday’s Hamilton County Meet in Noblesville.

Despite the heat (temperatures were still in the low 90’s at race time), Westfield senior Maggie Bingham pulled away in the second half of the race to easily defeat a solid field.  Bingham’s time of 19:03 was 27 seconds better than that of runner up Kelly McCurdy of Carmel.

History in the making: Top-ranked Fishers dominates Hamilton County Meet

Brandon Jones
Running Sports Coordinator

Thirty-four years.  Yes, thirty-four years.  That is how long it has been since a boys cross country team NOT named Carmel has won the boys Hamilton County cross country title.

That streak came to an end on a muggy Tuesday night in Noblesville.

The top-ranked Fishers Tigers, in only their second year of existence, brought the school its first Hamilton County Championship as they simply outran a strong field that included two other top 10 teams.

The Tigers also took home individual honors as junior Drew Shields bested teammate Cale Allen by one second.  Shields’ time was 16:08, while Allen finished in 16:09.

But that was just the beginning….

Fishers then placed its 3-4 runners in fourth and fifth overall, and the outcome was no longer in doubt.

Here are the individual results:
        1    1 Drew Shields       FISHERS                        JR          0:16:08.8  5:13

Still Southern Wells atop small school poll, while Culver Academy leaps to top of medium school division

Brandon Jones
Running Sports Coordinator

Southern Wells maintained its grip atop the HoosierAuthority.com small school poll, while Culver Academy is the new top dog in the medium school division.

Coach Bob Swank of South Knox and his panel are hard at work to recognize Indiana’s best small and medium school teams.

Here are the panel’s rankings for week two…

SMALL SCHOOL GIRLS

Southern Wells has strengthened their hold on first place with West Central moving up from third to
second.   Eastern Hancock used a strong Rushville performance to become the only newcomer in the top ten.

2  West Central           44
3  Carroll (Flora)        40
4  Hebron                 37

Pollsters felt that there was very little difference among the top four teams as all received at least one
first place vote and only five points separated them. Culver Academy took over first place from Chatard.  Chatard dropped to third with West Lafayette also passing them. All four are strong candidates to qualify for state.
