All-Sports Trophy scoring system unveiled

By Mike McGraw

Executive Director

If after reading this story you fully understand the system, we can guarantee you two things. First, you can pass the mathematics section of the sixth-grade ISTEP test. Secondly, you could pass any class offered to basketball players at the University of Georgia.

Seriously, this system has been developed to reward athletic departments for performance in the four areas we listed when we announced the award: competitive success in IHSAA tournament events, the development of outstanding individual athletes, the development of athletes who are also outstanding students, and fan support.

Keep in mind that the scoring system is purposely designed to give smaller schools a legitimate chance to compete against their larger counterparts.

Ok, without further ado â?¦ Prepare to be utterly confused.

Team competition

According to IHSAA statistics, the two sports with the largest number of schools competing are basketball for boys and volleyball for girls. In those two sports, team points will be awarded on the following scale:

State championship = 100

Semistate championship = 75

Regional championship = 50

Regional runner-up = 35

Sectional championship = 25

Sectional runner-up = 10

Sectional game victory = 5

The number of points awarded for a state championship in all other sports will be based on the number of schools competing in that sport as compared to the baseline sports mentioned above.

For example, there are 67 percent as many schools that compete in girls golf as there are that compete in volleyball. Therefore, a state championship in girls golf will be worth 67 points, and the number of points given for lower levels of accomplishment will be adjusted accordingly (in this instance, by multiplying x .67).

This scale will be used for all sports, with one minor adjustment coming in sports where competition is not head-to-head between two teams. In those sports (cross country, for example), additional runner-up points will be awarded through third place at the semistate level and through fifth place at the state level.

Development of athletes

In those sports where individual state champions are crowned, points will be awarded on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis for state meet-level finishes. It is important to note that these individual points will not allow a school to receive more points than what a team victory in that sport is worth. For example, if a school wins the girls golf championship and also has individuals finish first and second, that school will not receive additional points simply because that would give the sport more weight in the overall competition than it deserves.

In addition, five points will be awarded for an athlete being named as a first- or second-team all-state selection, with one point awarded for honorable mention. These points will be awarded in addition to any team points scored in a sport because these points can be awarded evenly for all sports. The all-state list used to determine these points in all sports will be the one announced by the coaches association.

Academic performance by athletes

Five points also will be awarded for any athlete named to the first- or second-team academic all-state teams, with one point for honorable mention. Again, the lists used will be those compiled by the coaches association in that sport.

Fan support

Beginning in October, fans will be able to log on to HoosierAuthority.com and vote for their favorite school. One point will be awarded for every 100 votes a school receives, up to a maximum of 30 points. No school will be allowed to increase its total in this area by more than 10 points after May 1, 2006. This is to prevent ballot box stuffing at the last minute.

OK, there you have it. When your head stops hurting, you will be happy to know that we will keep you updated on the scoring throughout the year on HoosierAuthority.com. There is one point we want to clear up right away, though.

We understand that some sports are contested in a class format while others are not. However, since we didnâ??t invent class sports — and as long as the IHSAA calls these victors state champions — we arenâ??t going to argue about it.

Hamilton Southeastern upsets second-ranked Carmel boys, 4-2

Unranked Hamilton Southeastern was a very rude host Sept. 29 to No. 2 Carmel, downing the Greyhounds, 4-2, in a Hamilton County boys soccer showdown. The loss leaves Carmel at 10-3-1 heading into its Oct. 1 clash with Zionsville.

Junior midfielder Aaron Henkle had an assist, while sophomore Daniel Moore and senior forward Chris Cutshaw scored the goals. It was the 24th tally of the season for Cutshaw, whose team has totaled 61 goals for the year while allowing only 15.

â??We played a good game tonight but made several critical errors on defense, and HSE took advantage of them,â? said Carmel coach Dan Kapsalis. â??We had many opportunities and missed.

â??HSE deserves credit for taking advantage of our mistakes and, because they did, they deserved to win tonight.â?

Two days prior to the loss at Southeastern, Carmel traveled to Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference foe Center Grove and came away with a 1-1 tie. Junior defender Robby Lynch scored the lone Carmel goal on a corner kick with just 10 minutes to go on an assist from senior defender Blake Weaver for the tie.

â??We struggled to find our rhythm, and we looked tired,â? Kapsalis said. â??We had a different lineup as well due to losing Tyler McCarroll on Saturday, and it showed.

â??We have been playing such strong competition lately, and I think we just were a little spent tonight.

Center Grove nearly scored with five minutes left to win the game, but junior goalie Zach Carr made a huge save in sloppy and wet field conditions.

â??We controlled the match but really failed to connect on any opportunities,â? Kapsalis said. â??And Chris Cutshawâ??s 12-game record-breaking scoring streak ended tonight.â?

On Sept. 24, Carmel made the long trip to the southwestern part of the state to take on seventh-ranked Evansville Memorial. The trip proved worthwhile as the Greyhounds posted a 1-0 halftime lead en route to a 2-0 victory.

Cutshaw and Lynch scored while McCarroll and Henkle had assists for the Greyhounds, who benefited from Carr â??s fifth shutout of the year. The victory, on fact, marked Carmelâ??s fifth consecutive shutout in the last two weeks. Included in that span were games against No. 5 North Central and 11th-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral in addition to the impressive win over Memorial.

â??Our defense once again was anchored by Andrew Parsons, Zach Canull, Robby Lynch, and Blake Weaver, who continue to shut down ranked opponents,â? Kapsalis said. â??At this point we are a bit banged up and we need to stay healthy. We cannot afford any more injuries.â?

Indeed, the win came at a heavy price as McCarroll was lost for the season with a broken collarbone suffered late in the second half. McCarroll, the teamâ??s second-leading scorer behind Cutshaw, is the third starting Carmel midfielder lost for the year due to injury. (Juniors Troy Blewitt and Rich Balchan have been out with injuries since the first game of the season.)

Thanks again to Carmel coach Dan Kapsalis for his excellent report. If there are any other soccer coaches in the state who would provide game reports like Dan does, weâ??ll print â??em!

SECTIONALS: Boys soccer tournament under way

A field of 261 teams with 6,115 participants has entered the 12th Annual Boys Soccer State Tournament as sectional action started Oct. 10 at 32 sites. One-match regionals are scheduled for Oct. 18 at 16 sites, with the four semistates four days later Oct. 22.

The state finals will be held Oct. 29 at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis, with semifinals at 10 a.m. and the championship at 6 p.m.

Defending state champion Valparaiso opens up in the nine-team Wheeler Sectional against Boone Grove Oct. 10, while top-ranked Pike will host seven teams in its own sectional. The Red Devils were the beneficiaries of a bye and will start up Oct. 13 against the winner of the Covenant Christian-Indianapolis Ritter match.

This yearâ??s tournament features one more team in the field than last year, but six member schools have entered for the first time. They include: Bethesda Christian, which begins play at the Brownsburg Sectional; Carroll (Flora), starting play at Logansport; Cascade, new at Center Grove; Hanover Central, heading to Merrillville; Liberty Christian, opening at Anderson; and University, playing at North Central (Indianapolis).

This will be the final year for the current three-week tournament format. In 2006, the number of sectionals will move from the current 32 to 64 and be played in a Thursday-Saturday format during Week 14 (one week earlier than this year). Each sectional will have four or five teams instead of eight or nine, as is the case currently in many parts of the state. The regional will change from a two-team to a four-team affair and be played in a new Thursday-Saturday format. Semistates and state finals will be played on the following Saturdays; each will remain in the current four-team format.

The tournament schedule:

Sectionals

Dates: Monday, Oct. 10; Wednesday, Oct. 12; Saturday, Oct. 15

Times: Determined by host school

Admission: $4 per session, $7 all sessions

Home team: The second-named team in each pairing will be the designated home team. The bye game in a six-team sectional will be the second game played on the second day.
