FB: New sectional alignments announced for 2009, 2010

From ihsaa.org

The sectional assignments for the 2009 and 2010 football state tournaments were announced March 30 by the IHSAA Executive Committee. The format was designed by the 15-person Football Realignment Committee, with representatives from all three IHSAA legislative districts and every classification, and was forwarded to the Executive Committee for its approval.

A total of 319 football-playing schools were assigned to 40 sectionals within the five-class structure. Of those 40 sectionals, all but one (Class 5A Sectional 8) will have eight teams for the next two seasons. Those eight-team sectionals will have four first-round games, two semifinal games, and the sectional championship game played over a three-week period. Sectional 8 will have three first-round games, with one team receiving a bye into one of the two semifinals, followed by the championship game.

A total of 28 schools will play in a different classification than they had in the previous two-year cycle.

BB 3A FINAL: #1 Princeton ends perfect with 81-79 2OT win over #7 Rochester

By E. Shawn Aylsworth

INDIANAPOLIS – In only the fifth-ever state championship game to reach double overtime, top-ranked Princeton somehow managed to overcome an incredible 40-point performance by No. 7 Rochester’s Bruce Grimm Jr. and capture the Class 3A title March 28 at Conseco Fieldhouse, 81-79.
The victory, Princeton’s first in any sport in the school’s history, capped an unblemished season for the Gibson County school at 29-0. That’s only the 11th time an undefeated team has won the crown in the tournament’s 99 years.

BB: Jac-Cen-Del rally celebrates school’s first-ever state title

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
OSGOOD, PART DEAUX – Last week, Hoosier Authority took you to Osgood, Indiana, for the pep rally following Jac-Cen-Del’s first-ever boys basketball semistate championship. We commented t was evidence that there are still places where it just means more than in other locations.
On Saturday night, March 28, we returned to take part in the rally welcoming back the Eagles after they won the Class A state title. It was the kind of night that makes you proud to be a Hoosier.
There were a few distinct differences between the two sessions. First, the parade after the semistate was about four miles long. This time, it exceeded eight miles. After the semistate, more than a thousand fans streamed into the Jac-Cen-Del gymnasium. This time, there were over 3,000.
Finally, there was joy and anticipation at the first event. On Saturday night, there was nothing but once-in-a-lifetime jubilation. It was a Ripley County party for the ages.
Take a moment to watch the videos on this page. If it doesn’t make you proud to be an Indiana basketball fan, check your pulse.

BB 1A FINAL: #1 Jac-Cen-Del whips #3 Triton for small-school title, 66-55

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
INDIANAPOLIS – The first official timeout in the Class A boys basketball state championship game March 28 at Conseco Fieldhouse came with 3:52 left in the opening quarter. The contest was scoreless. Both top-ranked Jac-Cen-Del and No. 3 Triton were playing outstanding defense, and neither could throw it in the ocean from the field.
That scenario would change for Jac-Cen-Del and, as a result, the Eagles (25-2) took home the first state championship of any kind in school history with a 66-55 victory over Triton, the defending 1A champ.
“I couldn’t be happier – this is 25 years of teaching and coaching, and it’s kind of a dream come true,” said Jac-Cen-Del coach David Bradshaw. “I guess you could call it a great silver anniversary present, not only to me but the entire community of Jac-Cen-Del.
“This is a team that a coach really learns to enjoy. They really don’t care who scores the points as long as they get the job done. That’s kind of been their motto since junior high … a very humble and unselfish approach.”
The JCD onslaught did not start over the remainder of that opening stanza as the Eagles led just 6-5 after eight minutes. They had shot only 3 of 12 for the quarter, but that was far better than Triton (25-3). The Trojans were just 2 of 15 in the period.
“Our defense in the first quarter was absolutely tremendous – everything was to perfection, almost,” Bradshaw said. “The No. 1 thing is we really contested shots today. I bet you we really contested 80 percent of their shots.”
The second quarter was a completely different story as the Eagles began to heat up in a hurry. They hit five of their first six shots in the period. That, combined with exceptional interior defense, led to a 13-2 run that saw Jac-Cen-Del race to a 21-9 lead.
Much of the success can be attributed to the play of Trevor Arnett. The 6’3” sophomore forward completely shut off the interior at the Triton end of the floor, and he also ruled the defensive boards for most of the first half (six rebounds en route to a team-high 11).
That dominance of the glass and the Eagles’ improved shooting – Jac-Cen-Del went 8 of 9 in the second quarter, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range – were enough to give Jac-Cen-Del a 25-13 lead at intermission.
Despite the seemingly comfortable lead, all was not rosy for Jac-Cen-Del. The Eagles’ leading scorer, senior Matt Gehl, had been held scoreless on 0-for-4 shooting in the first half. By the same token, Triton’s offensive leader, 6-foot sophomore guard Griffyn Carpenter, failed to dent the scoreboard himself on 0-for-6 accuracy.
Bradshaw knew that at some point one of the two was going to get hot, and he had to hope it was his man. It was, and “hot” is not the appropriate word for Gehl’s performance in the second half.
The 6’2” guard exploded for 26 second-half points, 15 of them in a third quarter that saw Jac-Cen-Del blow the game wide open.
“(Coach Bradshaw) told me to keep my head up and let the game come to me,” Gehl said. “That’s what I did, and I started scoring. I started pulling up for jump shots instead of trying to take it all the way.”
The Eagles like an open-court game and, with the lead going into the second half, that is exactly what they got in the third stanza. The result was a 21-point outburst punctuated by numerous textbook fast breaks.
After outscoring Triton 40-22 over the game’s middle 16 minutes, Jac-Cen-Del’s lead at the end of three quarters ballooned to 19 points at 46-27.
Defending champions do not die easily, and the Trojans were no exception. Carpenter heated up from behind the arc in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, and Triton also benefitted from some unusually sloppy play from Jac-Cen-Del during that time.
The combination saw Triton close the gap to 10 on two occasions midway through the final period. Gehl and fellow Jac-Cen-Del senior Blake Sutton, however, came to the rescue. The pair hit crucial free throws to keep Triton at bay, and the closest the Trojans would come was 62-53 with a little over a minute to play when Carpenter connected on his fourth 3-pointer of the quarter.
Carpenter led Triton with 14 points, while 6’4” senior forward Colton Keel (a game-high 13 rebounds) and 6’1” senior guard Joel Meister each added 12. But that trio combined to shoot only 26 percent (12 of 46) from the floor for Triton, which improved to 38-percent shooting (13 of 34) in the second half following its abysmal 19-percent effort in the opening half.
“We went 5 of 27 in the first half – that was probably the biggest ******,” Keel said. “If we had hit half those shots, we probably could have been in it the whole time.”
Jac-Cen-Del, on the other hand, never took its foot off the accelerator after that 3-for-12 effort in the in the opening period. The Eagles blazed away at a 62-percent clip (21 of 34) the rest of the way to finish at 52 percent for the game in winning their 18th straight game.
Gehl joined Arnett (who also had a game-high four blocked shots) for team-high honors with 11 rebounds to go with his 26 second-half points, while Sutton added 19 points for the Eagles, who owned the glass by a 42-29 margin.
“That’s what they’ve been doing all year,” said fourth-year Triton coach Jason Graves. “Coming into the game, I really didn’t want to play zone because I felt they’re too good of an offensive rebounding team.
“We ran into a pretty good team today. They’re long, athletic, tall, and contested our shots. I think that bothered us, especially in the second quarter. I think we got a little frustrated and lost our focus a little offensively.”
The day was made complete for the Jac-Cen-Del faithful when the Eagle’s 6’4” senior center, Gerald Hardesty, won the Mental Attitude Award following the game.
In the video players on this page are an interview with Gehl and Arnett, highlights of Hardesty accepting his award, and some typical action from Jac-Cen-Del’s big second half.
Jac-Cen-Del’s Hardesty named Mental Attitude Award winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Jac-Cen-Del’s Gerald Hardesty (eight points, six rebounds) as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, will present a $1,000 scholarship to Jac-Cen-Del High School in the name of Gerald Hardesty.
The award – named in honor of Arthur L. Trester, the IHSAA’s first commissioner who served the Association from 1929-44 – is presented annually to a senior participant in each classification who was nominated by his principal and coach and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability.
Gerald ranks second in his class of 58 and is president of the National Honor Society and his senior class. He was selected to the all-county team this year and will play in the 40/8 All-Star Game. Hardesty was voted most improved player for the Eagles in 2008 and was captain of this year’s squad, averaging nine rebounds per game.
In the community, Gerald is a 10-year member of 4-H and also works with the Catholic Youth Organization. He is a finalist for the Coca-Cola National Scholarship and the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. He volunteers as a tutor, helped organize a food drive for the National Honor Society, and assisted with the Biddy Ball program at Jac-Cen-Del.
Hardesty also participates in track & field and baseball and has been an all-conference selection four years for the Eagles’ soccer team. The son of David and Jennifer Hardesty of Osgood will attend Purdue University in the fall to study engineering.
This is the first Mental Attitude Award in any sport for Jac-Cen-Del.

BB 4A FINAL: Perfect ending for #1 Bloomington South in win over #6 Snider

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
INDIANAPOLIS – Sixth-ranked Fort Wayne Snider certainly gave No. 1 Bloomington South a run for its money March 28 in the Class 4A state championship game at Conseco Fieldhouse. But in the nightcap of the 99th annual boys basketball tournament, Snider’s 3-for-18 marksmanship from 3-point range and superior free throw shooting by South enabled the boys from Bloomington to complete a perfect season with a 69-62 win in this battle of Panthers.
The victory capped off an undefeated 26-0 season for Bloomington South, which earned its first state title since 1919 when the school was known simply as Bloomington High. The game was tight throughout, with six ties and eight lead changes before the victorious Panthers pulled away by going 8 for 8 from the stripe over the final three minutes.
During that time, Fort Wayne Snider could not capitalize on four Bloomington turnovers by going just 4 of 8 from the foul line and missing its last seven shots.
“I thought we were good enough to win, but we lost,” said 19th-year Snider coach Ray Sims. “We missed some free throws down the stretch and some layups down the stretch. I’ve always said if you make free throws and your layups, you can win basketball games.”
MUCH MORE GAME STORY TO COME!! IN THE MEANTIME …

Snider’s Hearns named Mental Attitude Award winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Reggie Hearn of Fort Wayne Snider as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, will present a $1,000 scholarship to Fort Wayne Snider High School in his name.
The award, named in honor of Arthur L. Trester, the IHSAA’s first commissioner who served the Association from 1929-44, is presented annually to a senior participant in each classification who was nominated by his principal and coach and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability.
As captain of the basketball team, Hearn ranks fourth in his senior class of 471 and is a National Merit Scholar semifinalist. He has been recognized for his academic achievement by the Fort Wayne Alliance of Black School Educators. Hearn is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars as well as being named Best Male Citizen of his senior class.
He has also been on the Principal’s List all four years.
The son of Crane and Lisa Hearn of Fort Wayne is involved with Youth Leadership of Fort Wayne, the YMCA as a volunteer coach, and is a member of the Fort Wayne Community Schools Planning Committee. Hearn’s area of study is currently undecided, but he plans on attending Harvard or Northwestern in the fall.

BB 2A FINAL: #2 Luers defends 2A crown with 67-49 win over Brownstown

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

INDIANAPOLIS – True high school basketball fans love to wax romantic about the game. We speak of great coaching, great strategies, or heroic efforts. We do not like to acknowledge the simple fact that 90 percent of the time, talent will prevail.

Yet that was the case in the Class 2A state championship game March 28 at Conseco Fieldhouse. Unranked Brownstown brought a great game plan to the battle. The Braves were coached superbly and gave tremendous effort. Yet No. 2 Fort Wayne Luers was by far the more talented team.

That was more than enough to allow Luers (23-4) to defend its 2A state title with a 67-49 victory that was closer than the score indicates.

Speaking of talent, how good is Deshaun Thomas? The 6’7” junior guard – the state’s scoring leader at 31.7 points a game and Indiana’s second-leading rebounder at a 15.7 clip – is good enough to have scored 34 points and grab 15 rebounds on the state’s biggest stage in what everyone acknowledges was not one of his better performances.

That is pretty darn good.

“Thomas is the best high school player I’ve seen – he’s incredible,” said 11th-year Brownstown coach Dave Benter. “There’s not really anybody in the state that can control him.”

Brownstown (20-7), the 2A state runner-up five years ago, brought a deliberate style to the floor, and it worked well early in the contest. The first official timeout came with 3:53 left in the opening quarter and the score tied 1-1. The next two minutes, however, revealed the theme of this contest.

Luers hit a 3-pointer and turned two steals into quick baskets, and in a flash the score was 10-1. The Braves began the long road back by scoring the final four points of the period, but they still trailed 10-5 after eight minutes.
“Brownstown came in and played a solid game,” said fifth-year Luers coach James Blackmon, the former Marion and University of Kentucky standout. “They came out with the box-and-one, and I thought that was a good defensive strategy. Our thing was to come out and try to control the tempo.

“In that first quarter, they controlled the tempo. But our guys did a great job of adjusting. Then we did a better job of getting in the passing lanes, created some easy steals, and were able to up-tempo the ballgame.”

The deliberate pace and Brownstown’s tightly packed zone defense seemed to stagnate the Luers offense in the second quarter. The Knights were forced to fire from beyond the 3-point arc on most occasions, and they shot poorly (a measly 1 for 11 in the opening 16 minutes). That was enough to allow Brownstown and talented 6’6” senior center Blaze Ayers to slowly creep back into contention.

The Braves twice cut the lead to two during the period and trailed only 24-21 at intermission. You could begin to feel the anticipation that perhaps one of those romantic upsets was in the offing.

“In the first half, I thought we played at the pace we needed to,” Benter said. “We controlled the tempo, and I thought we had them a little frustrated at halftime.”

It became more than anticipation early in the third quarter when Brownstown grabbed a one-point lead at 25-24 with 5:40 left in the stanza. The Braves had dominated play for 14 minutes and erased the initial Luers blast.

Unfortunately for the southerners from Jackson County, another surge was coming.

Luers responded to the threat with a 7-0 run fueled by two steals on the defensive end. This time, Brownstown was unable to stem the tide as Thomas began to dominate.

He found the range from the field and also managed two huge offensive tip-ins in the remainder of the quarter. By the end of the period, Luers had expanded the lead to 17 points. With a 24-6 barrage in just less than six minutes, it was clear evidence that the Fort Wayne squad simply didn’t have to work as hard to score points.

Talent prevailed.

“I talked to the guys about things we could control and can’t control,” Blackmon said. “I told them we couldn’t control whether the ball may or may not go in for us. But we could control our effort and composure.

“Even though the shots didn’t drop early, I thought they were really hustling and doing things for us to win that ballgame.”

Brownstown fought valiantly, but the Braves threatened at no point in the final quarter. The pace quickened and allowed Luers to display its potent open-court attack. The 18-point final margin was evidence of the second-half beatdown the Knights delivered.

“You have to make shots,” said Benter, whose team finished just 17 of 54 (32 percent) from the floor. “We missed a lot of shots that we’ve been making in the tournament. But some of that credit goes to Luers – they sometimes get you playing at a pace with their quickness that you’re not used to.

“Their quickness … you can’t simulate that in practice. I haven’t coached a kid in 11 years as quick as their slowest starter, probably.”

Six-foot senior guard Lawrence Barnett joined Thomas in double figures for Luers with 12 points, while 5’9” sophomore guard Ken Mullen added 10 points and broke the 2A championship-game record with four blocked shots.

Ayers led Brownstown with 18 points, including a stellar 12-of-13 effort from the free throw line, while 6-foot junior guard Ryan Shoemaker added 10. The Braves were severely hampered by the combined 19-percent shooting (6 of 32) from the starting trio of Ayers, 6’3″ sophomore guard Spencer Allman, and 6’7″ junior forward Taylor Wischmeier.

So can Thomas, who now sits in 11th place on the state’s all-time scoring list with 2,254 points, break Damon Bailey’s state scoring record of 3,134?

“This is reachable,” Blackmon said. “There are records breaking on a daily basis. Each game, we talk about another milestone as far as a record.

“If we continue to play like this next year, it’s something I think he can accomplish.”

Hoosier Authority spoke with Luers coach James Blackmon immediately following the game. His comments are in the video player on this page.

Brownstown’s Ayers named Mental Attitude Award winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Brownstown’s Blaze Ayers as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, will present a $1,000 scholarship to Brownstown in the name of Ayers.

Ayers ranks 32nd in his class of 156 and has been a four-year member of the Booster, Letterman’s, and Sportsman’s Clubs. The son of Earl and Arlene Ayers of Brownstown will also participate in the HBCA All-Star Game, was elected as All-Mid-Southern Conference, and is a three-year letter winner in the sport.

Ayers is a 4-H vice-president and a reserve grand champion in construction. He’s also active with youth groups and heavily involved with St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where he has worked food stands and bake sales.

He plans to attend either Hanover College or Indiana State University and major in business.
