Just as
our Brandon Jones has been doing 2006
previews on the boys side, so it shall be with the girls. Following is
the first of five girls track & field previews, this one covering
sprints and hurdles from our boy Colin …

100-meter high hurdles
How do you
pick against a state champion? Well, in this case, you have to. State meet
record-holder Vanneisa Ivy returns after dominating the event last year with an
incredible half-second victory. Tamara Adams, who was the state champion her
sophomore year, will be looking to regain her title. Look for Erica Moore, who
was DQ���?�d in last year���?�s trials, to medal in her senior year.

300-meter hurdles
The 300s,
like the other hurdle race, will feature two state champions. Like her main
competitor, Silvia Massey returns after a dominant performance at last year���?�s
state meet. She faces tough competition, however. 2004 state champion and 100-meter
high hurdle state record-holder Vanneisha Ivy looks to rebound from a poor performance
in last year���?�s 300s.

100 meters
Perennial
sprint contenders Lakeesha Burnett and Jeanne Roberts are gone, and a new crew
of girls look to take their place. Sophomore Candyce McGrone, the top returner,
should be the early favorite, but not by much. Bionca Gildon, a medalist in both
the 200 and 400, did not advance out of the 100 trials last season, but her
regional time would have placed her third last year. Look for Jessica Burnett,
cousin of the former Fort Wayne Northrop star, to have a breakout season.

200 meters
One of the
last events of the night should have huge title implications. Nikki Johnson,
last year���?�s top returner after placing third, should be looking to score huge
points for Muncie Central. Bionca Gildon just may put Gary Wirt in contention
for the title — all by herself. The 200 final, however, could be Gildonâ�?��?�s
fifth race of the day.

400 meters
Competition
in the quarter should be tight as seven of last year���?�s nine All-State runners
return for another shot. North Central���?�s Ashley Caldwell, last year���?�s
runner-up, is a step ahead of the field as many of the other contenders are
full of question marks.

Mary
Catherine Quiett of Mishawaka Marian was eighth last year, but she had a breakout
cross country season, placing eighth there as well. She may move up to the 800.
Erica Moore, a hurdler and sprinter with range, will also have some decisions
to make. Bionca Gildon, who should advance in both short sprints, may be
looking to concentrate on a specific event if her school is not in the team
race.

A field of 388 teams and 5,291 participants will begin play
as the 31st Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament Series tips off next
week at 64 sites around the state.

One site ���?? the nine-team
Class A Sectional 56 at Eminence ���?? will get
action under way on Monday, Feb. 6, with the majority of sites scheduled to
begin the following night. Sectional play continues through the week, with
championship games set for Saturday, Feb. 11. The regional round is slated for
Feb. 18, semistates Feb. 25, and the state finals at Conseco Fieldhouse March
4. In all, 384 games will be played over the four-week period.

At the state finals, there will be a championship game in
each of the four classes, beginning with Class A at 10:36 a.m. EST and followed
immediately by the Class 2A game. After a mid-afternoon break, the second
session will begin with the Class 3A championship game at 6:06 p.m. EST,
followed by the Class 4A game.

Among the defending state champions, host Tri-Central ���?? winner of three straight Class A championships and
currently ranked No. 1 ���?? will meet Southern
Wells in Sectional 54. In 2A, Shenandoah will open first-round play on its own
floor against Alexandria
in Sectional 41. South Bend St. Joseph���?�s will face New Prairie in the first
round of Class 3A���?�s Sectional 19 at Knox, and 4A North Central (Indianapolis)
will head to Sectional 9 at Hamilton Southeastern to play Westfield.

In addition to Tri-Central, other top-ranked teams in this
week���?�s state coaches poll are Heritage Christian in Class 2A, which drew host
Triton Central in Sectional 43; Class 3A���?�s Lebanon,
which hosts Western Boone in Sectional 25; and Class 4A South Bend Washington,
which meets LaPorte in Sectional 3 at South Bend Riley.

Four member schools will be making their first appearance in
the girls basketball state tournament: Bethesda Christian and University (both
in Sectional 56), Liberty Christian (Sectional 54), and Trinity Lutheran
(Sectional 59). Each is assigned to Class A.

Shenandoah, in Class 2A, leads the state with six
consecutive sectional championships. Castle (4A) follows with five straight,
while Garrett (2A), Gary West (4A), South Bend St. Joseph���?�s (3A), and Valparaiso (4A) each have won four in a row.

Rushville owns the most all-time sectional championships
with 23. Bedford North Lawrence and Valparaiso
trail with 20 each and are followed by Ben Davis, Kokomo, NorthWood, and Sullivan with 18
apiece.
