SB: Tipton’s Tragesser smacks three HRs in one game

The Tipton Tribune

SHARPSVILLE – Not once, not twice, but THREE times Tipton’s Kristen Tragesser went DEEP.

The Blue Devil junior second baseman’s school-record three home runs and seven runs batted in April 23 in a single game lifted Tipton (4-2) to a 13-2, five-inning victory over arch-rival host Tri-Central (0-5).

A check in the state record books showed that only Erin Falkenberry from Pendleton Heights hit more home runs in a single game – four. Seven others had hit three; now make it eight.

“She wasn’t even swinging for the fences,” said Tipton coach Jennifer Servies. “She has a great swing. She hit it on the sweet spot, which you can’t say enough about, and she did it three times.

“The best part is she’s the kind of girl who can put one over and she’s still looking to make contact the next time up. She’s a very disciplined hitter.”

Tragesser’s power surge not only earned her a pair of school records but also a puppy. Wanting a puppy, her parents told her she could get one if she hit two home runs in a game.

She did them one better.

On the afternoon, Tragesser finished a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with four runs scored and seven RBIs. All the long balls were no-doubters and were hit to different fields.

She blasted a two-run home run in the first inning, slugged another two-run homer in the fourth, and capped off her day with a three-run shot in the fifth.

“The first one was really good,” Tragesser said. “After the second one, when I knew I get a puppy, which was great … I felt really good.

“I have been working hard and bearing down (at the plate) lately.”

For awhile, it looked as if Tragesser would not be the only one to make history as Tipton pitcher Devan Alley had a perfect game going through 4 1/3 innings.

Alley retired the first 13 batters she faced. She had five strikeouts, including the side in the third inning, through the first 13 hitters.

She lost the perfect game when she gave up a walk to Tri-Central freshman Lacey Dyer in the bottom of the fifth. Jamie Coose then reached on an error. Alley came back and caught Kara Thomas looking at a third strike for the second out of the inning.

TC’s Ashley Cole then ended the no-hitter with a single to right field that loaded the bases. The Trojans would score twice, and both runs were unearned.

“I feel bad for Devan,” Servies said. “She’s pitched real well for us this season. She said she knew (she had a perfect game going), but no one said anything to her.

“But, unfortunately, those things happen.”

(The following day in a Tipton home outing against Northwestern, Tragesser’s first at-bat resulted in another over-the-fence home run, making four straight. The streak ended there, however, as Tragesser’s next two at-bats hit the fence for base hits.)

SB RANKINGS: Avon new No. 1 in 4A

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has released its fourth set of polls for the 2009 softball season, and we have a new No. 1 in Class 4A as Avon has bumped up to the top spot after last week’s 3-1 defeat of previous leader Center Grove.
The other top teams from last week – 3A New Palestine, 2A Indianapolis Scecina, and 1A Tecumseh – stay the same. Elsewhere, we have minimal movement as the weather hopefully turns non-cruddy on a semi-permanent basis:
In 4A, Homestead moves from ninth to fifth, LaPorte goes from 11th to ninth, and Greenfield-Central ascends from 14th to 10th.
In 3A, Boonville rises from fourth to second, Edgewood rises from fifth to third, and Gibson Southern – or Gibson “Southren” as it consistently appears on the ICGSA website … did somebody lose a bet? – rizes frum 15th to ninth. (Seriously, it’s not like the Titans from Fort Branch are two-time state champs or anything.)
In 2A, South Adams moves from 12th to ninth.
In 1A, Riverton Parke goes from fifth to third, while fellow Wabash River Conference foe Rockville bumps up from 11th to seventh.
Teams are listed by rank followed by school, first-place votes if applicable, rating points, and record (Top 10 schools only). The ICGSA’s 95 ranked schools from April 27:

Base RANKINGS: Cass, Bloomington North jump from unranked to eighth

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
The Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association has released its fifth set of polls for the 2009 season, and a pair of schools has leapt into their respective Top 10s from the ranks of the unranked.
Bloomington North now resides in an eighth-place tie with Anderson Highland (up from 11th) in Class 4A, while Cass has made a similar leap into a tie for the 2A eighth spot with Wapahani (up from 10th). Got all that?
Otherwise, it’s not a big week for helter skelter as the baseball polls finally begin to assume some sense of normalcy. Still, there are some changes of note:
In 4A, Indianapolis Cathedral moves from seventh into a fourth-place tie with Penn, which is up from eighth.
In 3A, Bellmont goes from 14th to sixth, while Mt. Vernon (Fortville) rises from 17th to 10th.

Third-ranked Munster made the trip from “The Region” to suburban Indianapolis worth it April 25 as the Mustangs defeated No. 2 host Carmel in the annual Carmel Invitational by one point, 67-66.
No. 7 Jasper finished third in the loaded eight-team tourney with 41 team points, while 13th-ranked Homestead (32) placed fourth, sixth-ranked Brebeuf (30) finished fifth, and No. 20 Evansville Memorial (20) went home sixth.
The girls tennis setback was surprising for the host Greyhounds, who were off to a 4-0 start in dual meets this season. That impressive stretch included back-to-back 4-1 victories April 17-18 over Brebeuf and then-No. 4 Center Grove.
“The team score calculations had Munster winning by one,” said Carmel coach Sharon Rosenburgh. “However, Carmel had three champions out of five and beat Munster in three positions.
“In the point system used in this tournament, this was enough to give the team score to Munster.”
Indeed. Carmel did take titles at No. 3 singles (junior Susie Chen) as well as at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles (senior Megan Renninger and sophomore Olivia Trancik, juniors Sarah Rodefeld and Annika Carlson). While Munster won at No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles, the Mustangs managed a pair of runner-up finishes compared with none for Carmel.
The two singles champions for Munster were senior Mary Hill, a 6-0, 6-1 finals winner over Jasper senior Janel Seng, and junior Christina Lee, a similarly easy 6-1, 6-0 finals victor against Homestead freshman Macy Johnson.
Hill, the third-place finisher at last year’s state finals, defeated defending runner-up sophomore Courtney Wild of Carmel 6-3, 6-0 in the semis at No. 1. Wild, meanwhile, had beaten defending state quarterfinalist senior Jade Johnson of Homestead 7-5, 7-6(4) in the opening round.

BT&F Southport Relays: #3 Warren’s depth gets it done over #14 Pike

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
SOUTHPORT – Depth and outstanding performances in the field events April 25 led third-ranked Warren Central to victory on the boys side of the 32nd Annual Southport Relays.
The Warriors amassed 130 points to best second-place No. 14 Pike by 32 points in the six-team event, with unranked Fort Wayne Snider outdistancing 12th-ranked host Southport for third place by five points.
The final scores are a little deceiving. Warren Central did not dominate in number of events won, but the four-time state champion did use its depth to pull away for the win.
Warren Central won six of the 15 events, including three of the five field events. That showing in the field included the outstanding personal performance of the day as the Warriors’ Derrick Spight won the high jump with a leap of 6’10”.
That was a full six inches higher than any other competitor.
Southport won three events on the day, including a sweep of the individual sprints. TaJuan Wood won the 110-meter hurdles for the Cardinals, while Nick Turner of football fame won the 100-meter dash. The Cardinals also claimed the long jump with Julian Walker’s 21’ 01”.
Fellow Conference Indiana member Pike showed a great deal of depth as well. The Red Devils won just two events in the meet but easily outdistanced everyone but Warren Central for runner-up honors.
