Pendleton Heigts keeps focus heading into conference title showdown with Yorktown

By Richard Torres
www.heraldbulletin.com

PENDLETON â?? The temptation was there on Tuesday, but instead of looking ahead toward this weekendâ??s showdown against the Yorktown Tigers to decide conference domination, the Pendleton Heights basketball team kept its focus.

Momentarily diffusing its Hoosier Heritage Conference championship thoughts on Tuesday night, Class 3A Pendleton Heights cruised past visiting Class 2A Guerin Catholic 52-30 to win its third straight.

â??Itâ??s definitely a thought,â? Pendleton Heightsâ?? first-year coach Brian Hahn remarked on his programâ??s upcoming opportunity to capture the HHC title outright on Friday. â??But the fact is we came into this to play Guerin (Catholic) and win against Guerin. We wanted to maintain our focus, and we wanted to play well.â?

The No. 17 Arabians did both before letting down their guard slightly.

Jay Hubble and Sean Collins each scored a game-high 16 points, and senior Kody Lemond added eight assists as Pendleton Heights improved its record to 12-4.

The Arabians jumped out to a 20-9 halftime lead despite shooting just 30 percent from the field through the first 16 minutes, but picked up the pace in the second as Guerin Catholic (6-10) switched from zone to man-to-man defense.

â??In the first half, we were a little sluggish and a little tentative,â? said Hahn, whose team stands undefeated in HHC play this season at 6-0. â??We knew they would struggle to handle our quickness in the man, and we just missed some open shots against their zone in the first half. In the second half, we played well.â?

The Arabians worked the perimeter to bury 5-of-8 three-point attempts in the second half and, taking advantage of the Golden Eaglesâ?? man-to-man pressure, found openings off dribble penetration to finish the game shooting 43 percent from the field. Scoring 27 points from beyond the arc, Pendleton Heights shot 40 percent from three-point range.

Ryan Nowicki led the Golden Eagles with 10 points, while David Mazanowski added six.

Pendleton Heightsâ?? pressure defense helped provide 19 points off turnovers as Guerin Catholic lost possession 22 times. Hubble and Isaac Gardner each logged four steals as the Arabians scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to complete the wire-to-wire victory.

â??It was hard to stay focused,â? Lemond admitted as the Arabians anxiously await the arrival of visiting HHC rival Tigers on Friday night for an 8 p.m. tip. â??Friday is the biggest game of the season so far, so itâ??s tough to focus on a game like this, but Guerin is a good basketball team. We knew we had to come out focused to win.â?

Pendleton Heights and Yorktown are tied for first in the conference, with the Arabiansâ?? last HHC title coming in 2004-05. The Tigers are 11-4 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in conference play.

Last year, the Arabians finished fifth overall in the HHC and were runner-ups in 2003-04.

â??It would be special because this is a team nobody expected to be here,â? said Lemond, who was a freshman the last time Pendleton Heights won the title under former coach Joe Buck. â??Nobody expected us to be 6-0 with a chance to win the conference outright. It would be huge especially with a first-year coach. Hahn is a great coach. Heâ??s done a great job.â?

2A No. 6 Cass dumps 2A No. 11 host Clinton Central, 54-39

MICHIGANTOWN â??? Confidence. Cass had it coming into the Kings’ Jan. 27 matchup of two top Class 2A teams with host Clinton Central.

Physicality. All four quarters provided hard play with minimal disruption from the striped shirts.

Flat. Clinton Central ultimately went flat in the fourth quarter with 0-of-5 shooting.

Dust â??? or, in this case, snow. When it had settled, sixth-ranked Cass topped No. 11 Clinton Central, 54-39.

Cass (12-2) raced out to a quick 11-3 lead behind 3-point shooting, but the Bulldogs (10-4) managed to come back 16-14 after one quarter. Clinton Central led 30-26 at the half.

Cass took back the lead at 31-30, then slowly pulled away in the third period on solid shooting and a great defensive effort that elicited numerous Clinton Central turnovers.

The fourth quarter saw the Bulldogs frustrated by poor shooting and even more turnovers.

Tyler Bowser led Cass with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Clinton Central’s usually explosive Jordan Tucker, meanwhile, was held to just 17 points.

No. 4 Chesterton uses strong start to top No. 3 Valparaiso

By Jim Peters
nwitimes.com

CHESTERTON â??? Being a freshman, Chesterton’s Megan Erminger isn’t all that familiar with the whole Valparaiso rivalry thing.

“Ana (Weaver) told me they’d never beaten them her whole career,” Erminger said. “It’s a big thing for her and Ashley (Virden).”

The two Trojan seniors, along with fourth-year coach Kathy Wilburn, enjoyed their first victory over the Vikings Jan. 30 as fourth-ranked Chesterton topped No. 3 Valpo, 111.125-110.025.

“We’re a young team, so they don’t really about Chesterton and Valparaiso,” Wilburn said. “We still had some mistakes, but we’re fortunate enough to have kids pull up, not get down and work through it. I think our depth helped out.”

Chesterton had the Olympic rotation — vault, bars, beam and floor — and took advantage to claim a 1.1 lead with Valpo on bars, its comparatively weakest event.

“We hit well and I think they just fed off that,” Wilburn said. “Right from the beginning, they showed they had business to do.”

The lead held up throughout the meet, with the Vikings’ beam score against the Trojans’ floors closing the margin in the final set.

“That was a very positive note,” Valpo coach Lorie Cook said. “I was pretty pleased how we competed. Overall, I thought we had a solid meet, not outstanding, and obviously we needed to be outstanding. Chesterton proved to fit the bill.”

The Trojans were powered by freshmen Megan Erminger and Kelley Freeman, Erminger won bars (9.55), beam (9.55) and all-around (37.5) with personal bests, while Freeman placed top three in all four events to take second all-around (37.225).

“I thought there would be a little more pressure but everybody on the team did really well and that took the pressure off,” Erminger said. “Kathy told me she was going to find a bars routine that fits me and I think she did.”

Bailey Huddleston won vault (9.5), hitting a layout Tsukahara.

Chesterton topped its 28 on vault with a 28.05 on beam to solidify the outcome.

Katelyn Skinner won floor (9.45) and was top four in all four events and all-around for Valpo, which posted a season best.

Rankings: The thought process behind – and this week's unveiling of – Chris May's "Twine Top 15s'

By Chris May

Boys Basketball Coordinator

Iâ??ll warn you that
you are about to read a self-congratulatory, slightly arrogant commentary on
why I began these rankings and why they should matter to you.

I started my own set
of personal rankings because I felt the average high school basketball fan
should be informed of what was really
going on across Indiana.
After growing tired of seeing The Associated Press release ridiculous rankings
that at some times included teams below .500, and generally seeing teams
receiving votes just because their local AP voter was giving them â??homerâ??
votes, I thought there should be a set of rankings that was as unbiased as
possible.

I thus set forth to
provide that set of rankings and feel qualified to do so. I am in no way the
omnipotent, all-knowing, high school basketball â??expertâ? or journalist, but I do
feel that seeing nearly 50 high school games already this season stretching
from schools in Evansville and Perry County to Valparaiso, Plymouth, and Fort
Wayne makes me one of the most well-traveled fans who follow â??Hoosier Hysteria.â?

Now, an explanation
of the other ranking systems in place.

I have absolutely no
problem with the Indiana High School Basketball Coaches Association rankings,
but I do feel that fans should see teams ranked according to their class to
give them the best idea of how they stack up against teams they may play in the
state tournament.

Jeff Sagarinâ??s rankings
provide a great way of comparing teams against each other statistically. But,
just like the BCS doesnâ??t use computers to solely select college football
teams, using only Sagarinâ??s computer analysis doesnâ??t allow for those
â??intangiblesâ? such as the quality of a backcourt or a teamâ??s depth or their
penchant for foul trouble. Sagarinâ??s power ratings rely only on strength of
schedule and results, so one teamâ??s strong front court versus anotherâ??s lack of
height isnâ??t considered by Sagarin â??? just who theyâ??ve played and how they
faired.

Other websites and
organizations also put out their rankings, which I also have no problem with. However,
whether it is a compilation of votes from their viewers or otherwise, I find it
hard to believe that they have seen as many teams and as geographically diverse
a group of schools as I have. And while those voting members may cover various
areas of the state, they have not ventured outside of their respective area,
whereas the Hoosier Authority â??Indianaâ??s Gameâ?
schedule allows me to easily compare teams from southwestern Indiana
with those in northeastern Indiana.

Finally, I try to
portray in my rankings the most accurate listing of the top teams. That sounds
like exactly what a poll should be, but let me explain. If Team A is the No. 1
team in Week 4 but loses a game, the AP will almost assuredly drop that team
out of the top spot in the next poll. I, on the other hand, will not drop a
team just because it lost.

Whether missing a
player, just playing downright horribly for a night, or not hitting a basket, even
the best teams have bad nights and, typically, endure a loss or two along the
season. My rankings, then, are aimed to display the best teams over the course
of a season and who would win in a given game, not the best teams of
last week.

Case in point:
Barr-Reeve suffered two losses in the span of eight days earlier this season,
but because of the teams they lost to, the closeness of the losses, and the
knowledge of their talent, I did not remove them from the No. 1 spot in Class A.

Futhermore, Lafayette
Central Catholic could go 10-10 with the Knightsâ?? 3A- and 4A-heavy schedule yet
still would be better than 95 percent of the other 1As in the state â??? even with
more losses than, say, half of the 1A schools. I have no rooting interest for
or against LCC but apparently the AP does, as evidenced by its continued
lowball ranking for the Knights. Meanwhile, schools like Bethany Christian (6-8)
get votes. Huh?

The bottom line is
that the best team in the state is the best team in the state, period. Just
because a top team in Southern Indiana lost and another top team in northern Indiana won last week does not make the Southern
Indiana
team worse.

You may now put down
your Rosetta stone. With those explanations behind us, here are my rankings as
of Jan. 31:

Crash claims life of former Terre Haute South golfer Travis Smith

By David Hughes

www.tribstar.com

Travis
Smith, a former All-State golfer at Terre Haute South and a
freshman member of the Ball State University menâ??s golf team, was
killed in a two-vehicle accident Jan. 27 in Muncie.

He was 19.

Muncie
police told the Star Press newspaper that the accident, which appeared
to have been head-on, involved a two-door Toyota Camry Solara coupe and
a Chrysler Pacifica mid-sized sport utility vehicle on Riverside
Avenue, west of Reserve Street, at about 7 p.m.

The Star Pressâ??
story, which appeared on its Web site, said Smith was a passenger in
the car with two other Ball State students â?? Ethan Whaley of Fowler and
Todd Lamkin of Huntingburg. Both of them were injured but not
seriously, the Muncie newspaper reported.

Neither of those names appeared on the Ball State golf roster on the universityâ??s Web site.

Police
told the Star Press that alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash,
although information on which driver may have been drinking was not
immediately available.

â??We are deeply saddened by the tragic
news of the death of Travis Smith, Ball State Athletics Director Tom
Collins said in an e-mail to the Tribune-Star late Saturday night. â??Our
thoughts and prayers are with his family and the members of our Ball
State golf program during this difficult time.

A 2006 South
graduate, Smith tied for fourth in the IHSAA boys golf state finals at
the Legends of Indiana Course in Franklin last June, leading the Braves
to a second-place finish.

The son of Jimmy and Tami Smith, he
also had a ninth-place finish in the 2004 state finals. He was a state
finalist four times in his high school career.

Smithâ??s golf coach at South was Chris Cassell.

â??There
will never be a high school golfer that good in Terre Haute, said a
stunned Cassell, who knew Smith as a friend more than as a golfer.

â??He
was in my wedding [in July 2005]. When I was in high school at South
[in the 1990s], I knew his parents and I remember taking him to Dairy
Queen when he was in second grade.

â??The main thing Iâ??ll remember
about him is how he treated everybody the same. He never let on that he
was a good golfer. He treated the last guy on the team the same way he
would have treated Tiger Woods.

Smith also played guard on the
boys basketball team during part of his time at South. On Jan. 26,
2005, he sank two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to give the
Braves a 37-36 lead that held up in a victory over Terre Haute North
inside Hulman Center.

At Ball State, Smith tied for 15th in his
first collegiate tournament last September. He majored in business and
accounting, according to the universityâ??s Web site, which said Smith
â??set every school record in golf at Terre Haute South.â?

Survivors include his parents and his sister, Courtney.

The Wednesday morning Mass of Christian Burial for
Smith has been moved to St. Benedict Church, 111 South 9th Street, in
downtown Terre Haute according to DeBaun Funeral Home. The Mass is
still scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. It was moved because St. Benedicit
Church has a larger seating capacity.
