FB: Class 3A preview

By The Waterboy
Contributing Water

The Waterboy is a young and enthusiastic fan of both high-quality H2O and Indiana high school football who has been kind enough to share his insights with us for the upcoming 2008 season. Sound off on his thoughts and predictions via the link at the bottom of this story!

Will coach Vince Lorenzano and Indianapolis Chatard make it three Class 3A titles in a row? With all the hype surrounding legendary coach Bud Wright and 1A Sheridan (and rightly so), few people realize that Chatard also has an opportunity to win its 10th state title – and, even more amazingly, the Trojans’ eighth in 12 seasons. The 3A trophy isn’t exactly a done deal, however, as Chatard has lots of holes to fill.

Ari Pappas will run the ball aggressively on the ground, while T.J. Agnew and Kevin O’Brien will light it up through the air at the wide receiver position. Agnew and O’Brien will also lock down their opponents’ passing game from their defensive backfield spots. The big question for the northeastside Catholic powerhouse is who will command the offense at quarterback? George VanVliet and Steve Commiskey will battle for the position during two-a-days this fall.

Coach Kevin Downey and crew are anxious to get South Bend St. Joseph’s back to the state championship game. QB Joey Hecklinski will lead the offense after throwing 16 touchdowns in 2007, and Knute Knapp should be on the receiving end of many of those passes. On the other side of the ball, defensive end Ricky Taylor and linebacker Adam Arsenault will lead a unit that allowed 238 total yards per game last season.

Perennial Southern Indiana power Heritage Hills lost a lot to graduation, especially on offense. But WR Kraig Gogel should help a host of other talented seniors continue the Patriots’ dominance of the Pocket Athletic Conference.

West Lafayette won its first eight games before then-junior QB Matt Lancaster was injured. The Red Devils went on to drop their final two games – a 50-21 loss at Sheridan in the regular-season finale and a 21-14 home loss to Eastbrook in the opening round of sectionals. This year should be an exciting one in the Hoosier Conference, and 19 West Lafayette starters return (including Lancaster) to contend for a sectional crown and possibly more. Defensive lineman Kevin Jones and LB Andy Huber will lead a tough defense, and if Lancaster and other key starters can stay healthy, West Lafayette may give Sheridan a run for its money in the conference and come away with the program’s first sectional title since 1993.

Seventeen starters return to the Brebeuf Braves from their sectional runner-up campaign in 2007. One key position that must be replaced, however, is that of the QB position. As soon as head coach Ryan Gallogly can find a signal-caller for the spread offense, there will be plenty of talent on the offensive side of the ball to take advantage of. Connor Costello and Austin Bruen should be the primary passing targets, and Evan Kroot is looking for another big season at running back.

Hamilton Heights is looking to get back to the top of Sectional 22. New head coach Curt Trout inherits a Huskies’ roster full of young talent. Trout will need every bit of that talent if he hopes to compete in a sectional with two-time defending state champion Chatard. RB Brandon Bentley will lead the Wing-T offense, while the strength of the defense will be along a line that returns four seniors. Brandon Wilkinson, Garrison McElroy, Zac Garrity, and Wyatt Toller will anchor the 4-3 defense for the Huskies.

Another Sectional 21 team makes the Top 10 in Danville. The Warriors are the defending sectional conquerors after a 40-20 victory over Brebeuf in the championship game. The biggest question will be how to replace Indiana All-Star QB Colton Cooper. If coach Terry Siddall can find a suitable replacement for Cooper, then Danville might be able to take advantage of a load of young offensive talent. RBs Davis Hess and Austin Chalfant and receivers Calvin Beasley and Trent Caldwell will all be highlighted in the Warriors’ spread offense.

Crawfordsville makes the list at No. 8, mostly because of the Athenians’ talent on the offensive side of the ball. All-Sagamore Conference QB Jordan Standefer, along with All-Conference RB Craig Fairley, will look to light up the scoreboard this season. DBs Brett McKinney and Brett Linn will be the focal point of the 4-4 defense this season. If head coach Rex Ryker & Co. can find a way to shore up a defense that allowed an average of 125 rushing yards per game, then C-ville may challenge Danville for the conference crown.

The Lakeland Lakers lost many players to graduation after last season. Fortunately for head coach Keith Thompson, however, talent abounds in LaGrange. DL Aaron Baker and LB Brock Bateman will again lead a defense that allowed an average of 99 passing yards per game last season. Offensively, RBs Nic Brown and Josh Fuller should help the ground attack, while Aaron Baker returns at tight end.

Mount Vernon (Posey) returns multiple talented athletes, especially at the skill positions. Eric Stemple will be throwing to several big-time targets, including Michael Clowers and Ryan Ploetz. Ploetz and Clowers will also star in the defensive secondary, while LBs Jared Schmidt and Jacob Wagner should stymie the opponents’ running game.

FB: Class 2A preview

By The Waterboy
Contributing Water

The Waterboy is a young and enthusiastic fan of both high-quality H2O and Indiana high school football who has been kind enough to share his insights with us for the upcoming 2008 season. Sound off on his thoughts and predictions via the link at the bottom of this story!

Talented teams abound in Class 2A, especially in Sectionals 27 and 30 where three teams each make the 2A Top 10 each. Other teams are just as hungry to unseat Fort Wayne Luers, however, so here we go …

The North Putnam Cougars top off the list as new coach Greg Barrett takes over a roster loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Griffen Dahlstrohm returns for his senior year, and he will be throwing to Jarrett Ban and Kyle Alcorn. On defense, the line will put up some stiff resistance, led by defensive end Alex Lance and defensive tackle Seth Vandersaar.

The last time the Jimtown Jimmies took the field without legendary coach Bill Sharpe, Jimmy Carter was sitting in the Oval Office. Now that new coach Mike Campbell has taken over, he has the job of getting his squad back to championship form – and his roster is capable of doing just that. The defense is led by seven returning starters, including defensive backs Jeremy Hill and Josh Ruben. Ruben will also be calling the signals for the offense this year as the Jimmies look to capture their first state crown since 2005.

Fort Wayne Luers, the defending 2A state champion, might have lost a step or two to graduation, but the Knights are by no means in a rebuilding phase this season. QB Quinn Schafer will once again lead the offense, with running back Ryan Eifrid next to him in the backfield. Linebacker Tyquan Hammock, who is without question one of the top defensive players in the state, will be among eight returning starters for the Knights.

The Speedway Sparkplugs return 16 starters and a mentality of unfinished business. After going 8-3 in 2007 – with two of the losses coming to West Central Conference and Sectional 30 foe North Putnam – coach Denny Pelley’s squad is perfectly capable of competing in one of the state’s toughest sectionals. QB Kyle Linville will take over for the graduated Ethan Bartel, while RBs Jaron Avance and Eric Law will lead the ground attack.

Is this the year for Rochester? Coach Mark Miller has consistently fielded great football teams in the regular season but, for one reason or another, the Zebras seem to have trouble making the transition to the state tournament, having failed to make it out of their sectional since 2000. After going 9-0 in the regular season in 2007, the Zebras’ season once again ended prematurely with a 28-14 loss to Cass in the Sectional 26 opener. QB Brody Schen will once again be under center for the offense, while Jason Smith will anchor the D-line at end.

Evansville Mater Dei will have to replace a lot of starters from last year, but RB Brent Weinzapfel will be there to help lead the way on offense.

Fairfield will be searching for its first sectional title in school history this fall, and the Falcons have plenty of talent with which to take advantage. RB Alic Vanover, who averaged more than 12 yards per carry in 2007, will be the cornerstone of the offense.

Heritage Christian will be looking to finish the job this fall after last year’s magical run to the RCA Dome. Gone is QB Garrett Meador, off to play football at Drake. Returning, however, are several key parts of last year’s squad, including wide receiver Morgan Cook and outside linebacker Eric Burke.

Tri-West Hendricks will no doubt be much-improved after a 6-4 campaign in 2007. Coach Chris Coll’s Bruins return 15 starters, including QB Jake Allen and RB Caleb Ross. The Bruins will first have to fight their way out of one of the state’s most brutal sectionals (30).

Harding fans are hoping for a return to the promised land after a year of mediocrity and a 5-5 record. Coach Sherwood Haydock would be more than happy to bring back a second trophy in three years to the Hawk faithful, but first his team will have to navigate through always tough and determined opposition in both the Summit Athletic Conference as well as Sectional 27. RB Rod Smith will return to lead the offense once again, and Stephen Scott will anchor a solid D-line.

FB: South All-Stars thump North, 34-14

By Alex Kirby
HoosierAuthority.com

The South scored on the game’s first play from scrimmage – a 65-yard touchdown pass from former Perry Meridian quarterback Adam Weise to wide receiver Tandon Doss of Ben Davis – of the 42nd Annual Grange Insurance/IFCA North-South All-Star Game, and the South lived up to pre-game expectations by pulling away in the second half of a 34-14 victory July 18 at North Central (Indianapolis).

HoosierAuthority.com’s Alex Kirby was on site to bring you live blogging as the Indiana Football Coaches Association-sponsored game between recently graduated seniors progressed – you can check out his updates by clicking here. And, click here for game highlights and postgame interviews all weekend!

Weise was selected as the game’s most valuable player as well as MVP for the South, while Lafayette Jefferson QB Tim Fogarty was named North MVP.

The South squad, led by Pike coach Derek Moyers, came out very aggressive in the first half as witnessed by the game’s opening play that put the South up 7-0 just seconds into the contest.

The North responded with a more conservative approach on the next drive. Using some short passes mixed in with a few running plays, Valparaiso QB Alex Sarkisian led his team down to 3rd and goal inside the 5-yard line. He was able to make the best out of a busted play from the 4, getting the North on the board and tying the game 7-7.

The South again showed why they were the favorite, though, as Jewel Hampton of Warren Central returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards all the way back for a score. Hampton would end up leaving the game late in the final minutes with an injured left hand.

Fogarty again found the end zone in the second quarter, this time through the air as he hooked up with Brady Young from Delta for a 30-yard score to draw the North even once again at 14.

Facing a tough and determined South defense that on this night featured defensive end Robert Maci from Indianapolis Cathedral and defensive back Maurice Berryhill of Indianapolis Arlington, however, that was all the scoring the North could muster,

Weise, on the other hand, found Carmel WR Jordan Brewer for a 22-yard TD to put the South up for good, 21-14, with five minutes to go in the first half.

The South added two more scores for good measure in the third quarter – a 14-yard pass from Danville QB Colton Cooper to WR Jared Blue of Vincennes Lincoln, and another Weise TD pass to WR Kyle Dietrick of Indianapolis Chatard.

With the win, the South improves its lead in the series to 23-19.

FB: Class A preview

By The Waterboy
Contributing Water

The Waterboy is a young and enthusiastic fan of both high-quality H2O and Indiana high school football who has been kind enough to share his insights with us for the upcoming 2008 season. Sound off on his thoughts and predictions via the link at the bottom of this story!

Can coach Bud Wright and Sheridan make it four in a row and become the first team in Indiana to reach 10 state championships? This writer thinks so, but the Blackhawks are by no means a lock as Class A will be loaded with teams looking to knock off the perennial champion.

Sheridan, of course, returns quarterback/defensive back and recent Indiana University commit senior-to-be Nick Zachery, while Rockville returns a great QB of their own in senior Matt King. Indianapolis Ritter will once again be a factor in the championship chase with a great offense that includes wide receiver Tyrone Walker. Perry Central will be a threat, and Lafayette Central Catholic would have been ranked higher had the Knights been a little more successful in the postseason the past few years.

Let the controversy begin!

The Waterboy’s Class A Preseason Power Rankings
1. Sheridan
2. Rockville
3. Indianapolis Ritter
4. Perry Central
5. Lafayette Central Catholic
6. Linton
7. North Central (Farmersburg)
8. South Newton
9. Clinton Central
10. Pioneer

Best of the rest:
Tecumseh

AST: Can Carmel three-peat with the All-Sports Trophy?

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

We are rapidly approaching the start of the 2008-2009 sports season, meaning there’s only one thing left to take care of from last year’s frenzied competition.

We need to award the 3rd Annual Hoosier Authority All-Sports Trophy!

As the ’07-08 school year began, the overwhelming question was whether anyone could keep the award from becoming an annual rite at Carmel High School. Despite carefully crafted rules to provide smaller schools with an equal opportunity to lay claim to the title, the Greyhounds had captured both of the previous awards.

Over this next month leading up to the start of the ’08-09 school year, we will provide you with the season-by-season story of last year’s chase for the trophy. We’ll begin with Fall 2007.

Last autumn, Carmel certainly didn’t do anything to indicate it would be any easier on the competition than it had ever been. The Greyhounds won the 5A state championship in football. They also fared well once again in state cross country competition, and the ’Hounds placed a squad in the volleyball finals. The defending champion amassed well over 400 points.

However, the champs ended the fall campaign looking up in the standings to an unexpected challenge.

The surprise of the fall season came out of Columbus, where the North Bull Dogs scored points in every sport and ended the season on top of the standings. The charge can be attributed to a strong football squad, a boys tennis team that generated a long run in the tourney, and the volleyball squad.

Early on, it seemed to be a big school parade. There were several other schools that fared very well last autumn. Among the programs mounting early challenges were Indianapolis Cathedral, Evansville Reitz, and Lake Central.

If you are wondering about small-school contenders, the fall is a bad time to judge. It is the season that encompasses the most sports that are not contested in small schools.

Sheridan, which once again claimed the 1A title in football, did not score another point in the year’s first season. Fort Wayne Luers managed only 37.5 points past the performance of their champion footballers.

Here is a list of the Top 10 programs after the Fall ’07 season. Remember, we have not added in the small-school multiplier yet. We will do that after we take you through the entire year.

I know – it is cheap self-promotion. But we are good at it. See you soon!

All-Sports Trophy standings following Fall 2007
1. Columbus North 487.5
2. Carmel 442.5
3. Indianapolis Cathedral 407.5
4. Lake Central 367.6
5. Evansville Reitz 337.5
6. Center Grove 285
7. North Central (Indianapolis) 267.5
8. Chesterton 265
9. Munster 262.6
10. Bloomington North 255
10. Floyd Central 255

St. V Spirit of Sport Service to the Poor winner: B. Wachtel

Westfield swimmer Ben Wachtel received the prestigious “Service to the Poor” Award at the second annual St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards held July 13.

Wachtel, who won state championships in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events this past winter despite having a broken right foot, has made quite an impact on the lives of the less fortunate outside of the pool. In fact, Ben is one of the founding members of the Westfield chapter of Amnesty International.

As part of his involvement with the organization, he helped orchestrate this past school year at the high school a book drive that collected reading materials to send to children living in Darfur, Sudan.

Ben will swim collegiately at Purdue University, where he hopes to build upon swimming accomplishments that include winning a total of four state championships his final two years at Westfield.

HoosierAuthority.com Executive Director Mike McGraw and St. Vincent Sports Medicine’s Ralph Reiff had a chance to visit with Wachtel at this year’s Spirit of Sport Awards ceremony. Click here to watch the interview!
