BB SECT. 26: 3A #11 Beech Grove drops Chatard in OT, 47-45

By Craig Adkins
Contributing Writer

BEECH GROVE – What a way to start sectional semifinal Friday!

Four ties, six lead changes, and playing an extra four minutes – that seems to be the trend for Class 3A No. 11 Beech Grove this week. Downing Roncalli 70-62 in the opening-round nightcap in overtime on Tuesday, it sure didn’t bother coach Randy Males’ squad to do the same Feb. 29 against Indianapolis Chatard to reach the Sectional 26 championship game.

The two battled it out for 36 minutes, with Beech Grove (18-3) winning a home-court sectional semifinal thriller in overtime, 47-45.

Beech Grove’s 6’2” senior guard John Hart canned a 3-pointer from the right wing for the first points on the scoreboard, getting the home crowd in the game right away. The Hornets kept a slim lead throughout the first quarter, spreading the floor and reading Chatard’s defense and testing what might work on offense.

The hosts led the Trojans after one, 16-13.

Chatard (16-6), which came into sectional play rated 14th in the final regular-season 3A Sagarin power ratings, took its first lead with 1:30 left in the first half on an offensive rebound and putback by 6’4” senior forward Daryn Hightower. That was followed by a steal and coast-to-coast layup by Pat Kennedy, and Chatard took a 7-0 run into the locker room at halftime with a three-point lead at 23-20.

With each team living possession by possession in the second half and holding onto their tournament lives, any mistake could result in merciful conclusion.

Backcourt play is what kept Beech Grove poised in its pursuit of a sectional finals berth opposite No. 13 Indianapolis Northwest, a 66-51 winner over Brebeuf in the opposite game, on Saturday night. Senior guards Ben Walters and David Sanders, along with forward Eric Weathers, kept the Chatard defense on its heels constantly.

Finding holes in the Trojans’ defense and finding each other for key baskets is what ignited the Hornets and kept the intensity up.

It’s all about seniors and their great leadership on the court. Males’ bench only saw one sub in action, but that didn’t matter. Beech Grove’s five on the floor were like an Energizer bunny that didn’t stop until that overtime clock had gone to all zeros.

The game was tied twice in the fourth quarter with two lead changes. Hightower was the pulse for Chatard in the fourth, canning two field goals and three free throws for seven of the Trojans’ 10 points.

But 6’5” senior center Charles Clem was key for the Hornets with two layups on passes from Sanders.

With just over a minute left in regulation, Walters knocked down his third three of the game to cut the Chatard lead to 45-43. Over the next two trips down the court, Hart made one of two at the line followed by a trip by Walters that also resulted in one freebie. That tied the game at 45-45 with :47.9 left.

Beech Grove’s defense held and forced overtime, erupting a packed crowd of approximately 2,300 at the home of the Hornets.

Beech Grove won the OT tip and held the ball until the 1:03 mark of the extra period, when Chatard junior guard Pat Kennedy stole a Sanders pass. The Trojans kept the ball for about 25 seconds before turning it back to the Hornets on a traveling violation by Hightower.

Beech Grove held for the last shot. With just five ticks left on the clock, Sanders let fly a three that was off. Clem stuck his long arm up trying to tip the ball in, but instead the ball fell to the left baseline. Instinctively, Walters grabbed the rebound and, while in the air, hoisted the ball to the basket with his left hand.

The shot swished through the net as time expired, sending Beech Grove to the sectional championship.

“I didn’t expect Ben Walters to get an offensive rebound and a putback,” Males said. “That was not one of the things I thought about, but we’ll take it.”

Beech Grove has now survived two overtimes to advance to the sectional finals. On its home court, the sixth man played a big role.

“I’ll take a third overtime tomorrow night, as long as we win,” Males said. “Walters played huge for us.”

Chatard was led in scoring by two players in double figures. Hightower led all Trojans with 19 points, while senior guard Jimmy Kennedy added 15.

Beech Grove was led by Walters’ game-high 20 points, while Clem joined him in double digits with 11.

With Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis head coach Ron Hunter in attendance, IUPUI recruit Alex Young made it look easy as the Space Pioneers downed Brebeuf in the night’s second semifinal.

Northwest (16-6) led 24-9 after one, forcing five turnovers compared with only two of their own. The Space Pioneers took a 36-26 lead into halftime and slowly, but surely, extended their lead throughout the second half.

Young, the 6’5” senior forward who didn’t even step foot on the floor in the fourth quarter, got some rest as seven players off the Northwest bench saw action. Even though they narrowly took the third quarter 15-14, the Space Pioneers still led by a baker’s dozen at the end of three, 53-40.

The fourth quarter lasted for an eternity because every little move that was made by Brebeuf, there were check or touch fouls called that seemed to prolong the game. The Braves played their hearts out Friday night, but when a team is a lot quicker than you in all facets of the game, the odds are usually stacked against you.

Brebeuf (6-14) placed no scorers in double figures but did have seven players with five-plus points apiece in the scorebook.

Northwest was led by the game-high 21 points of Young, while senior guard Antonio Cannon added 19 and senior backcourt mate Karrington Stallings had 12.

BB SECT. 10: 4A #12 Lawrence North upsets 4A #4 Cathedral, 52-48

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

INDIANAPOLIS – Live by the three, die by the three.

That surely must have been the mindset taken by Class 4A fourth-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral Feb. 29 in the Fighting Irish’s Sectional 10 semifinal against 4A No. 12 Lawrence North at Warren Central. Coach Scott Hicks’ troops fired up 15 second-half 3-point attempts, including 12 in the fateful fourth quarter, but they hit only one of their last seven while the four-time state champion Wildcats hit nine of their 10 double-bonus free throws in a 52-48 upset victory.

The Wildcats will face North Central (Indianapolis), a 73-60 winner over Indianapolis Broad Ripple, in the championship Saturday night.

Cathedral stumbled into the bonus at 6:04 of the final stanza, allowing LN 14 trips to the line down the stretch. The Wildcats converted on 11 of them, including the front ends of two bonus situations and all but one of their double-bonus opportunities after the 3:16 mark.

Meanwhile, Cathedral was clanging away from outside, missing six of seven after drawing within two at 43-41 on 6’3” senior guard Sean Esposito’s trey with 4:44 to play. Combined with LN’s deadly efficiency from the stripe – 6’9” junior forward/center Stephan Van Treese made five of six in the game’s final three minutes – that spelled doom for the Irish.

Gym SECTIONALS: Preview

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The 36th Annual IHSAA Girls Gymnastics State Tournament gets under way March 1 at eight sites around the state. (Click here for the tournament lineup, then click here for the final regular-season top team and individual scores!)

A year ago, Lawrence Central captured its first-ever state title by downing two-time defending champ and perennial power Fort Wayne Dwenger, 111.0 to 110.425. Center Grove, the 2006 runner-up, placed third with 110.2 points, with Chesterton (109.625) fourth, Carmel (109.425) fifth, Valparaiso (109.25) sixth, Columbus North (108.95) seventh, and Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran (108.5) rounding out the state finals field in eighth.

While there’s a decent chance that Lawrence Central will make it back to the finals this year, there’s virtually no chance that the young Bears will defend their throne. That battle figures to come between top-ranked Valparaiso and No. 2 Columbus North, each of whom has posted a state-high team score of 114.200 this season.

Individually speaking, all the state champions return, led by double-winner Katelyn Fernandes. The Center Grove junior, who won a state title two years ago in the vault, duplicated that effort with a 9.7 last year to go with her score of 38.125 in the all-around.

Other defending champs back for more are Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran sophomore Brannon Springer (9.675 in the uneven bars), her classmate Hannah Osborn (9.725 in the floor exercise), and Fort Wayne Dwenger senior Jeanna Van Hoey (9.7 in the balance beam).

But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a quick peek at what’s on tap for this Saturday’s sectionals. Right off, three of the sectional sites grab your attention as they will feature 14 of the state’s 21 ranked teams.

At Chesterton, it’ll be the usual juggernaut as five ranked teams try to eke out one of the three regional-qualifying spots. Valparaiso figures to lead the way at the 10-team event, followed by No. 4 host Chesterton, seventh-ranked Merrillville, No. 13 Crown Point, and No. 14 LaPorte.

At Columbus East, the landscape is eerily similar with Columbus North as favorite followed by fifth-ranked Center Grove and No. 6 host Columbus East, with No. 17 Bloomington South and No. 18 Jeffersonville hoping for some help.

At Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran, third-ranked Dwenger will be favored ahead of the No. 7 host Cadets, with No. 11 Fort Wayne Snider and No. 16 Fort Wayne Northrop likely battling for the third spot.

Of the other five sectional sites, three of them feature a pair of ranked teams.

At Connersville, seventh-ranked New Castle likely will duel with No. 10 Hagerstown for the crown. At Warren Central, No. 18 Noblesville and 20th-ranked Lawrence Central figure to advance to the regional. At Wawasee, No. 12 Carroll (Fort Wayne) gets a reprieve from having to compete at the loaded Concordia sectional and likely will down No. 21 Plymouth for the title.

The other two sectionals will take place at Harrison (West Lafayette), where No. 15 Western is the favorite, and Muncie Central, where there are no ranked schools among the 11 teams.

If all goes according to plan this weekend, then two of the four regionals scheduled for March 7 will be absolutely loaded. Seven ranked schools feed into both the Columbus East and Valparaiso sites, although the most that can advance past sectionals is five apiece.

The top five schools in the rankings – Valpo, Columbus North, Dwenger, Chesterton, and Center Grove – could all make it through to the state finals Match 15 at Perry Meridian. But the carnage begins at the sixth spot, meaning top programs like Columbus East and Merrillville could be outside looking in.

BB SECT. 2: 4A #8 Chesterton dumps 4A #14 Merrillville, 76-62

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

MICHIGAN CITY – Basketball is a complex game, but more often than not, a game comes down to one or two things that did or did not happen. The Class 4A Sectional 2 showdown Feb. 28 in Michigan City between eighth-ranked Chesterton and No. 14 Merrillville is a perfect case in point.

This was 32 minutes of some of the best basketball this writer has seen all year. However, the game was decided on what did and did not happen in just over four minutes.

Coach Jim East’s Merrillville Pirates had to be frustrated during the first half of this contest. They shot the ball extremely well (7 for 10 in the first quarter), controlled the boards, and protected the ball reasonably well.

Yet they trailed by five (22-17) at the end of the first quarter, and midway through the second period the Pirates still had been unable to eliminate the deficit.

Their chance to seize control of the game came with 3:20 left in the half. That’s when mercurial Chesterton senior point guard Jordan Lewis picked up his third foul. With Harris on the bench, the backcourt matchups were clearly in Merrillville’s favor, providing a wonderful opportunity for the Pirates to surge into the lead.

It didn’t happen. Chesterton (19-2) made just enough big plays to cling to a 33-29 lead at intermission.

The second half once again found Merrillville (16-5) applying consistent pressure. The Pirates actually took the lead 44-43 late in the third quarter, and they maintained a 48-47 advantage at the end of the third.

The battle continued through the first minute of the fourth quarter, when the second key moment of the game occurred.

With just under seven minutes to play and Merrillville leading 53-52, Chesterton drained a 3-pointer to regain the lead. For perhaps the only time in the game, Merrillville then experienced back-to-back inefficient possessions at the offensive end.

Chesterton did not fail to take advantage.

High-scoring 6’5” senior forward Zack Novak’s bucket made it 57-53, and then senior guard Austin Bower inserted the dagger with a 3-pointer from the right corner.

The 8-0 run gave Chesterton its biggest lead at 60-53. Now the Trojans smelled blood in the water, and the only remaining question was the final margin. Chesterton controlled the final minutes for the eventual 76-62 victory.

The Trojans were led by the impressive double-double of Novak, who scored 29 points and hauled down 13 rebounds. Merrillville, meanwhile, was led by the 16 points of John Wanunu.

Let’s talk a moment about Chesterton. The Trojans have been designated all year as one of the state title threats from northwest Indiana. Because teams from “The Region,” for obvious reasons, play a mostly regional schedule, people in the rest of Indiana have wondered whether the Trojans are really that good.

The answer, my friends, is yes. They can win it all.

Chesterton is not overly athletic or exceptionally big. What coach Tom Peller’s crew is is exceptionally well-drilled, experienced, and skilled.

Novak, the state’s fourth-leading scorer at 27 ppg, is a stone-cold assassin. He can score points in bunches without controlling the ball or the action. Rather, he will score a half-dozen garbage points on offensive rebounds, drain a couple jumpers, and finish on an occasional Chesterton fast break.

Before you know it he has 25 points, and you find yourself trying to consciously remember when he scored 10 of them.

Lewis is seasoned, skilled, and savvy. More importantly, the senior has the heart of the lion. But perhaps most critically, the Trojans have a third weapon in Bower, who is a cold-blooded perimeter sniper.

This is a Northern Indiana team which often plays Southern Indiana basketball. I’m not saying they will win the title, but they certainly could.

In the evening’s first game, Crown Point (15-6) defeated cold-shooting Michigan City, 60-46. The loss ended a resurgent season for the Wolves under the first-year leadership of Bob Buscher. Nonetheless, Michigan City (11-10) served notice during the season that their once-proud program has begun a return to glory.

Crown Point will face Chesterton in the second semifinal game Saturday (the Michigan City Sectional title game will take place Monday night), with Valparaiso (8-13) taking on Hobart (13-8) in the opener.

GSw: McKeehan, Plumb take IHSSCA postseason awards

The Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association has named the Indiana High School Swimmer of the Year for 2007-08 Girls Swimming and Diving. This award, which honors the finest swimmers and divers in the state of Indiana based on performances at the IHSAA state finals, is calculated using the Power Point tables published by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association.

The Indiana Swimmer of the Year is senior Michelle McKeehan of Center Grove High School, the state champion in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Her winning time of 1:56.87 in the 200 IM established a new National High School Federation record, while her time of 1:00.12 in the 100 ****** established a new state record.

Because her 100 ****** earned more points from the NISCA Power Point table, McKeehan earned the Indiana Swimming and Diving Performance of the Year for her efforts in that event. McKeehan was honored with both awards all four years of her high school career, and her combined total of 357 power points also set a new record.

She was coached by Jim Todd.

Carmel coach Chris Plumb was named the Indiana High School Girls Swimming & Diving State Coach of the Year. The Carmel girls won for the 22nd time in a row, tying a national record for number of consecutive state titles in any girls high school sport.
