Sect. 22: New Haven wins sectional opener behind strong pitching from Bischoff

Staff Report

Senior Matt
Bischoff threw a one-hitter and faced the minimum 21 hitters in leading Class
3A No. 7 New Haven to a 6-0 win over Fort Wayne Dwenger May 29 in a Fort Wayne
Luers Sectional opening-round game.

Bischoff
retired the first 18 batters he faced before surrendering a leadoff single in
the seventh. Never fear, though — battery mate and younger brother Kyle
immediately took care of that problem by picking the Dwenger runner off first.

The elder
Bischoff ended the contest with 13 strikeouts.

The
Bulldogsâ?? offensive punch came from No. 9 hitter Troy Waldelich, who took
advantage of the large dimensions in center field at Indiana Tech Stadium to
leg out a second-inning, inside-the-park home run.

The
victory lands New Haven in a Thursday sectional semifinal matchup with Fort
Wayne Concordia Lutheran, and 11-2 Monday winner over host Luers, and keeps
alive the highly anticipated possibility of a Friday finals showdown between
the Bulldogs and eighth-ranked Bellmont.

Throwback: Huntington North's Kramer a three-sport star

By Greg Seiter
Contributing Writer

Thereâ??s
certainly nothing unusual about the fact that Huntington North senior Chris
Kramer is hoping to cap off his high school athletic career by earning All-State
honors in baseball. In fact, if the truth were to be known, there are most
likely dozens of Indiana
student-athletes who are aiming for the same designation.

But what
separates the personal ambitions of Kramer from those of other high school
baseball players in the state is the fact that if he is successful, Kramer will
earn his third All-State title â?¦ this year.

â??Honestly,
I didnâ??t even think about the possibility of being All-State in three sports
until just recently, when somebody mentioned the idea to me and how rare it
would be, said Kramer, who has already earned All-State recognition in both
football and basketball during this academic school year. â??But now, itâ??s become
a goal of mine. I want to be one of the very few, if not the first, in school
history to do it.

Kramer set
the stage for a remarkable senior year last fall when, as Huntington Northâ??s
starting quarterback, he broke 12 school records, including most touchdowns
scored in a season and most touchdowns scored in a career. He also became the
schoolâ??s all-time leading rusher.

In
basketball, the four-year starting point guard who earned All-North Central Conference
honors as a sophomore, junior, and senior received his second All-State
recognition of the 2005-06 campaign after guiding the Vikings to an 18-3 record.
Kramer averaged 19 points, four assists, and four rebounds per game.

â??Chris is
a phenomenal athlete, said Huntington North boys basketball coach Eric
Foister. â??As a coach, you dream of having a player that is athletic, coachable,
tough, hard-nosed, and a team player.

â??He
defines what a multi-sport athlete is.

While
excelling in a variety of sports, Kramer acknowledges that basketball is, by
far, his favorite.

â??Even when
I was around 7 or 8 years old, I can remember going to the YMCA to play
basketball every day after school, said Kramer, who has accepted a scholarship
offer to play basketball at Purdue
University. â??After a
while, I would go home for dinner, but then I would always try to go back out
and play more basketball.

â??I just
loved it.

Although
Kramer missed three weeks of baseball competition early this season because of
an ankle injury suffered during the Vikingsâ?? spring trip to Kentucky and
Tennessee, Huntington North baseball coach Russ Degitz hopes that Kramer, who
splits time as a pitcher and shortstop, will receive due consideration for
All-State recognition.

â??His first
game back, he pitched a complete game and earned the win against the then-ranked
No. 5 Homestead Spartans,â? Degitz said. â??And when heâ??s not on the mound, I
would not trade him for any other shortstop in the state of Indiana because of his leadership, work
ethic, and ability.

Unfortunately
for Degitz and Kramer, Homestead
gained a large measure of revenge on Memorial Day with a 2-1 victory in the
opening round of the Class 4A Fort Wayne Snider Sectional. Still, Kramer
remains upbeat about his future.

â??I know
that Iâ??m very fortunate because Iâ??ve been blessed with some natural talent, but
Iâ??ve also worked very hard,â? Kramer said. â??I just like to be competitive,
whether itâ??s in sports or in school.

â??Being
competitive makes you work harder. It brings out the best in you.

Decatur Central Sectional: Big 4th inning lifts 4A No. 4 Center Grove past Franklin Central, 3-1

By Bubba Harnist
Staff Writer

INDIANAPOLIS â??? Center Grove senior shortstop
Angela Rizzo wasnâ??t going to let her team lose in the sectional finals for the
second year in a row May 27 at Decatur Central.

Rizzo led
a fourth-inning charge for the Class 4A fourth-ranked Trojans that saw them
score three runs off Franklin Central senior pitcher Megan Russell en route to
a 3-1 win that advances them to next weekâ??s regional.

Any extra
incentive for the Trojans to make it to the next round? You bet, because now
they get to play at least one more home game. The Trojans will host fifth-ranked
Avon June 3 in a 1 p.m. semifinal of the
Center Grove Regional, with No. 6 Carmel and Indianapolis Cathedral battling in
the 11 a.m. opener.

â??We
werenâ??t going down like this,â? Rizzo said. â??This morning (a 3-2 come-from-behind
win in eight innings over Perry Meridian) was a terrible feeling. We wanted to
get the bats going and get some confidence.

Trojans
coach Russ Milligan opted to start freshman pitcher Emily Gwaltney over senior
standout Ashley Curtis.

â??With the
heat and the emotion from this morningâ??s game, we wanted to give Ashley a
break,â? Milligan said. â??We are 30 games in now, and Emily has started roughly
11. She is a phenomenal third baseman, so she doesnâ??t pitch as much, but she
pitched well.

â??We could
have, and would have, gone to Ashley if we needed to.

Gwaltney
made Milligan look like a genius as she went the distance, giving up only three
hits in picking up the win. Her counterpart, the University of Indianapolis-bound
Russell, was nearly as good. Russell gave up five hits over six innings with
three strikeouts in taking the loss.

After both
teams put zeroes on the board for the first 3.5 innings, the Trojans went to
work in the home fourth. Russell walked senior Traci Lippold to start the
inning, and Lippold moved to second when Gwaltney helped herself with a single.
Senior Emily Warner moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice
bunt.

Sophomore
Danielle Prince then proceeded to hit a rope that Flashesâ?? second baseman
Chanda Bell was unable to handle, allowing Lippold to score and give the
Trojans a 1-0 lead. After the error, Rizzo stepped up with runners on first and
third.

Before
Rizzo could lace a double, Gwaltney scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Rizzoâ??s
extra-base smash scored Prince, giving the Trojans a solid advantage at 3-0.

Russell
escaped further damage by retiring the final two batters and not allowing Rizzo
to score.

Franklin
Central finally got on the board in the sixth after Bell led the inning off with a double. Bell then moved to third on
a bunt by Russell, and she scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Leah Prewitt.

The Flashes
had one more chance, albeit a brief one. After two quick outs, junior Erica
Petitt reached on an error, but junior Megan Brown popped to the catcher for
the final out, giving the Trojans the 3-1 win and the sectional championship.

â??The
morning game I was a little scared,â? said Rizzo. â??I didnâ??t want to lose, so I
gave my all. We knew we needed to get hits at the right time in this game and
then play good D and make no errors.

Sometimes
playing twice in one day can take its toll on a team. And sometimes playing
twice in one day can bring out the best in a team.

Said Milligan:
â??Itâ??s tough emotionally, not physically, because these girls are used to
playing twice in one day. That being said, games at this level in sectionals
can be emotionally draining.

In the
morning session, Franklin Central knocked off Southport,
12-0, in six innings, while Center Grove avoided the upset bid from Perry
Meridian in its eight-inning win. The Trojans had to score one in the seventh
and one in the eight to win that game.

â??The first
game was a big, emotional game for us,â? Milligan said. â??For us to come back and
get ready and be that focused and play that fairly mistake-free tonight is
impressive.

Tech freshman Fritz amazing on and off the tennis courts

By Mike
McGraw
Executive Director

It may not
be politically correct, but the truth is that many of the so-called Olympic
sports are not the province of large, urban school districts. To excel at sports
like tennis, golf, and swimming usually requires extensive coaching outside of
the school setting.

In short,
they are expensive sports. History suggests that the greatest success is found
in suburban and private schools.

You can
imagine, then, why it caught our attention when we learned that the Indianapolis City
girls singles tennis championship had been won by a freshman from Tech High
School. The young ladyâ??s name is Kelly Fritz, and
when we spoke to her, we found a whole lot more that got our attention.

Fritzâ??
victory was the first time in at least 25 years that an Indianapolis Public Schools
player had won the tourney. She defeated highly regarded Paola Osina of Cathedral,
1-6, 6-3, with a 10-8 tiebreaker determining the outcome due to weather and
time concerns. Moreover, Fritz was undefeated for the season until running into
Christina Riley of Avon in the individual
regional finals last week.

Riley, who
ended Fritzâ?? season in the individual singles tournament May 27, is also a
freshman.

So how did
a player from Tech reach these heights? We asked that question of Fritz.

â??I
couldnâ??t hit the broad side of a barn till I was 12,â? she said. â??Then I began
to get better and realized I could be pretty good.

â??I grew up
playing in the National Junior Tennis Leagues, which is a program through Indy
Parks. Now I train at the Indianapolis
Tennis Center
with coach Smith.

It was
when the inevitable question of why she plays at Tech surfaced that we began to
learn what a remarkable girl Kelly is off the court.

â??I had
interest expressed from most of the private schools in the city, but I believe
in diversity and living in the real world,â? Fritz said. â??My brother attended
Tech and has had a great experience. Tech has a strong math and science magnet
and I am interested in that, so it was where I wanted to go.

â??I have an
uncle who offered to pay if I wanted to go to a private school, but I said no.

It is a
decision that obviously pleases long-time Tech coach Kathy Kinghorn, who is
quick to point out that the Titans have always had a good program by IPS
standards.

â??Kelly
obviously takes it to a whole other level, though,â? Kinghorn said. â??The other
girls look at her and say to themselves, â??she goes to Tech and look what she
has done.â??

â??It is
really a great thing for Tech athletics.

A state
championship and a college scholarship are goals for this young phenom. But
there, too, we find that Kellyâ??s outlook is a bit unusual.

â??I donâ??t want
to play in a real pressure-packed situation in college,â? Fritz said. â??I really
like tennis, but it isnâ??t my whole life.â?

In fact,
Kellyâ??s first love is the outdoors. She hopes to major in some nature-oriented
area. A professional career in tennis in not only a long shot, it isnâ??t even
something Kelly aspires to.

â??I canâ??t
imagine having to play every day as a job,â? she said. â??I just donâ??t think that
would be much fun.

What is fun is talking to a young athlete who
has her priorities so firmly in line. Indiana
will hear much more from this young lady, and we are sure it will all be good.

Road Trip Journal3: Frustration, reward in equal doses

By Mike
McGraw
Executive Director

When we
started our efforts to visit every high school athletic director in Indiana, we had to make
a tough decision. Did we try to make appointments, or should we just drop in?

We decided
to simply drop in. We knew this could be slightly inconvenient because ADs are
busy people, but making appointments with 400 men and women would have required
at least 1,500 phone calls, and it would have taken over a year to complete our
project.

So, we
decided to take our chances.

It has
worked well. Of the 24 ADs we have visited within an hour and a half of Indianapolis, all but one
has taken a few minutes to chat with us. However, I had a feeling that Road Trip
#3 would test our luck.

I headed
to two of the far-reaching areas of the state. First came a trip toward
Louisville to visit with the schools along the Ohio River. The second
destination was â??The Regionâ? in northwestern
Indiana. Both
of these are parts of the state that often complain, sometimes
rightfully so,
that the exploits of their athletes are ignored, or outright snubbed,
by the
rest of the state. If you think you know where this is going, you are
right.

While down
south, only four of eight athletic directors would take the time to talk. Not
surprisingly, three of the four were from Jeffersonville,
New Albany, and
Floyd Central, so-called outlying schools that fall into the small number that
already receive decent media coverage.

The
percentage who would meet with us up north was much better. However, at least
one athletic director (at a school that shall remain nameless) made it clear
that he thought media coverage actually HURT his athletic program. As you might
imagine, that was rather discouraging in so much as Hoosier Authorityâ??s main
goal is to increase the interest in local athletic programs.

If I sound
critical, I do not mean to do so. My point is only that the next time you, as a
reader of this site, believe we have failed to report the achievements of a
quality athlete or team from Providence, Silver
Creek, Merrillville,
or several others, please know that we tried.

Now, to the
rewarding parts of the trips — and there were many. First, the south.

Floyd
Central is located in the most scenic venue of any school I have ever seen. You
could take a nature hike and never leave the property.

New Albany has more than a rich athletic past
of which to be proud. The Bulldogsâ?? student-run radio station actually appears
in the ratings books for the Louisville
market! That is quite an accomplishment.

The Jeffersonville athletic department should bring some pride
to Michigan City,
even though the two are at least four hours apart. Thatâ??s because first-year
Athletic Director Tony Branch is one of the best basketball players ever to
play for the storied Michigan City Elston Red Devils. Old folks like me will
remember that he went on to play for the Louisville Cardinals of Denny Crum in
their heyday of the late 1970s and early â??80s.

Perhaps
the most interesting news from this area of the state concerns football. After
giving its blessing to a youth football program in the town, the Scottsburg
school board has turned down a request to start football at the largest school
in the state that does not field a team. The action has sparked a good, old-fashioned
political brushfire that some believe is behind some administrative changes and
is likely to lead to some hotly contested school board races this fall.

By the
way, two other schools that do not field football teams currently have proposals
in front of their board: Silver Creek and Henryville.

The news
from up north centers on conference realignment. For those who do not know, the
seven largest schools of the Lake Athletic Conference, including Andrean, Hobart, Highland, and Munster, are forming a
new conference that will begin play in the 2007-08 season. The move has been
needed because the LAC simply had too many teams (16), and the difference in
enrollment among the members was getting far too large.

There is
also a new conference forming that affects some members of the Porter County
Athletic Conference, the small-school conference that includes many of the
township schools in the rural parts of Lake
and Porter counties. The PCAC has never had football, and those schools that
have grown to the point of wanting to field football teams are parting ways
with the league.

By far,
the most unique story from these trips comes from North
Newton. It seems the wrestling coach of the Spartans, Bruce
Cunningham, is currently in Iraq.
He is an active member of the Army Reserve. That is reason enough for note, but
it is only part of the story. You see, North Newton
has run the risk of losing its entire
core coaching staff. Not only Cunningham, but the football coach, boys basketball
coach, and recently resigned girls basketball coach, are ALL members of reserve
or National Guard units.

A person
could get the notion that patriotism is a way of life in Newton County.

While I
was racking up the miles, Hoosier Authority Video Coordinator Eric
Eaton was
talking to Speedway Athletic Director Ron Probst, one of the real good
guys in Central Indiana athletics. Did you know that Speedway High
School offers no bus
transportation? The home of the Sparkplugs is an old-fashioned
neighborhood
school. The situation does make it interesting for the athletic teams,
though. Speedway teams rent buses for away games, and the school pays
for that, in part, by parking cars during the Indianapolis 500.

Keep that
in mind the next time you head to the race.
