W: #6 Crown Point thumps #16 Chesterton, 48-13

Sixth-ranked Crown Point was down two starters, but the sixth-ranked Bulldogs still managed to capture 11 of 14 weight classes Nov. 28 in a 48-13 dual-meet romp over No. 16 host Chesterton. Click here for the nwi.com story on Crown Point’s win.

The Bulldogs’ victory marked the third time during this young season that ranked teams have gone head-to-head on the mat. Then-No. 11 Lawrence North squeaked past 10th-ranked Warren Central, 31-30, on Nov. 20, the same that fifth-ranked host Bellmont rolled over No. 13 Columbia City, 43-12.

BB 2nd Annual ‘Programs versus Cancer’ event Dec. 1

The Waldron and Edinburgh boys basketball teams will meet this Saturday, Dec. 1 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference rivals’ 2nd Annual “Programs vs. Cancer” game, an event that will help raise money for the American Cancer Society.

In addition to the on-court action, the event will give spectators multiple opportunities throughout the evening to make contributions that will help raise cancer awareness through the ACS.

Fundraisers will include specially printed T-shirts for the game that will be for sale. In an effort to create a “whiteout” effect by the crowd, the T-shirts are white with each school’s respective colors used on the printed areas of the shirts. An auction featuring numerous sports-related items also will be held, and donations will also be taken during the evening.

Prior to the fourth quarter, a check will be presented to the American Cancer Society for all proceeds raised through the event.

Last year’s event, an idea hatched by Edinburgh coach Curt Chase and former Waldron coach Jason Gorrell, raised more than $4,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year’s goal is to top that mark.

“I think this is an incredible cause,” said Jeff Gorrell, Waldron athletic director and current boys hoops coach. “We hope this will encourage people to help a great organization that helps so many people. Nearly everyone has been affected by this terrible disease in some way.”

Added Chase: “I am very proud that our basketball program and community are involved with ‘Programs vs. Cancer.’ Our kids and their families really do a good job of helping raise money, and it gives our community a sense of pride to help. I am hoping our continued involvement will help raise awareness and to help any way we can to fight this terrible disease.”

Waldron Principal Brian Fehribach is extremely proud of his school’s involvement.

“Almost everyone knows someone that has been affected by cancer, and to be able to help fight this disease in some small part is a very worthy cause,” Fehribach said. “I would like to thank both coaches for all the time and effort that they have put in to make this event a success.

And Edinburgh Athletic Director Tim Jordan: “For this program to be started by two young coaches and having the public response as great as it has been these past two years, I think is a great credit to them – their positive influences in their communities as well as the positive involvement of the athletes and schools.”

The game will be held Saturday at Waldron Junior-Senior High School, with junior varsity action at 6 p.m. ET and the varsity tipoff at 7:30.

Anyone unable to attend the game but wanting to make a donation is encouraged to contact either head coach: Curt Chase of Edinburgh at (812)-526-5501 x2107 or cchase@edinburgh.k12.in.us, or Jeff Gorrell of Waldron at (765) 525-6822 or jeffgorrell@ses.k12.in.us.

GBB 4A #2 Ben Davis romps past 4A #3 Lawrence North, 63-40

By Bret Shambaugh
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS – In the opening girls basketball game of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference campaign for both schools, Class 4A No. 2 host Ben Davis pounded 4A third-ranked Lawrence North, 63-40, in a battle of big-school unbeatens.

The 500 fans in attendance expected a nail-biter, but the Giants’ relentless full-court defensive pressure forced 24 Lawrence North turnovers in the lopsided affair. Yet turnovers were only part of the problem for the outmanned Wildcats, who had to use a tremendous amount of energy just to break the Giants’ full-court press.

Lawrence North launched 11 air balls, mainly from behind the 3-point stripe where they shot just 4 of 14. Ben Davis led 28-13 at intermission, and the Giants (4-0) stretched their lead to as many as 29 points at 59-30 midway through the fourth quarter

This very young Ben Davis club (there is not a senior on the roster) placed nine players in the scoring column. The Giants were led by junior guard Alexandria Bentley’s 14 points – all but two of them coming in the second half, while sophomore guard Dee Dee Williams (a perfect 4 for 4 from the field) contributed 11 points off the bench.

Also in double figures for Ben Davis was freshman forward Bria Goss, who did not miss a shot while scoring 10 points. Goss was 2 of 2 from the floor and 6 of 6 from the line.

The Giants also were excellent from the foul line, knocking down 17 of 20 charity tries for a splendid 85 percent. At one point in the contest, Ben Davis converted on 10 straight free throws.

Ben Davis got after the Wildcats’ right from the start. In each of the first three quarters, Lawrence North experienced four consecutive possessions that resulted in a turnover. And with senior center Felisha Johnson saddled with foul trouble in the first half, the Wildcats never found a rhythm.

Lawrence North was led in scoring by junior forward Daress McClung, who had 11 points, while senior forward Lauren Simmons provided a spark from the bench by adding 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.

The Marion County Tournament begins next week, and the Wildcats may get a shot at revenge – the two teams could meet in a Dec. 8 semifinal at North Central (Indianapolis). Until then, however, coach Stan Benge’s ultra-young Giants look to be the cream of the crop in Indianapolis girls hoops.

WFLQ’S Mike Hole, late Chuck Akers to be honored by IHSAA

From the IHSAA

Michael Hole and his late broadcasting partner, Chuck Akers, of WFLQ Radio in French Lick have been named as this year’s winners of the Indiana High School Athletic Association Distinguished Media Service Award for District III.

Both will be honored Nov. 30 in a special ceremony prior to the Springs Valley-Orleans boys basketball game at Orleans. IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress will be on hand to make the presentation.

Hole, also known by his on-air name, “Mike Hamilton,” has been with WFLQ since 1986, having called Springs Valley football games since that same fall and Blackhawk basketball games since the 1989-90 season. He also covers Orleans and Paoli high schools in various sports, including volleyball, baseball and softball. Besides his on-air duties, he works as an account executive for the station and hosts a weekly sports talk show, “Sportschat,” during the fall and winter months.

Prior to joining WFLQ, Hole worked for WLSO in Spencer and WUME in Paoli. He got his start during his high school days at Carmel High School’s WHJE, where he served as sports director during his junior and senior years and was the first student to call the play-by-play action for basketball. While a college student at Indiana University, he interned at WBWB radio in Bloomington and also volunteered at WIUS, the campus radio station.

He graduated from IU in 1982 with a degree in telecommunications and a minor in business.

A licensed IHSAA official in six different sports, Hole has worked sectional and/or regional tournaments in girls basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball. He considers broadcasting the 1989 Class A state football championship between Springs Valley and Bremen and the 1990 boys basketball state finals, when Bedford North Lawrence won the crown, as his favorites.

He and his wife of 25 years, Kristina, have two sons, Alex, 22, and Adam, 18. Kristina teaches French at Orleans High School. The family has called Orleans home since 1985.

Akers had been a broadcaster for WFLQ for 24 years, broadcasting primarily football and basketball games. Many marveled at his encyclopedic knowledge of Springs Valley High School sports. He retired from the school corporation in 1999 after a long career as a teacher as well as coach for football, boys and girls basketball, and golf.

More recently, he had been enjoying retirement as a starter at the Donald Ross Golf Course in French Lick. He had also been a licensed IHSAA official for both high school basketball and baseball.

Akers had graduated from Union College in Barbourville, Ky., in 1964 and later received a master’s degree from Indiana University.

Akers tragically lost his life in a traffic accident Oct. 18. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Leslie, and their two daughters, Libby Pancake (Tony) of Zionsville and Kelli Matthews (Patrick) of Allen, Texas, and seven grandchildren. They were residents of French Lick.

This is the 23rd year the IHSAA has recognized outstanding members of the Indiana news media from each of the three IHSAA legislative districts for excellence in the coverage of high school sports. District III covers 42 counties across Southern Indiana. Hole and Akers are the first honorees of the 2007-08 school year.

On behalf of its 407 member schools, the Indiana High School Athletic Association is pleased to salute Mike Hole and the late Chuck Akers for their dedicated service to high school athletics in the state of Indiana.

Previous award recipients from southwestern Indiana include:

Don Bernhardt, Evansville Courier, 1984-85

GBB 4A #4 Hamilton Southeastern downs 4A #3 Carmel, 54-50

By Bret Shambaugh
Contributing Writer

FISHERS – Class
4A No. 4 Hamilton Southeastern outlasted previously undefeated 4A
third-ranked Carmel, 54-50, in front of 350 fans Nov. 24 in an
afternoon girls basketball non-conference contest between the two
Hamilton County rivals.

The host Royals (4-1) were paced by the
inside game of 6’0” junior standout Paige Smith (14 points) as well as
blistering 53-percent shooting ( 8 of 11) from behind the 3-point line
as third-year coach Chris Huppenthal improved to a sparkling 51-6
career record.

Smith was 6 of 7 from the floor, while Royals’
junior guard Courtney Osborn was 3 of 5 from behind the arc and
finished with 11 points. Junior forward Kristi Sannella, meanwhile,
contributed 11 points off the bench.

That trio of double-digit
scorers countered Carmel’s 1-2 punch of junior guard Chrissy Steffen
and freshman forward Torrie Thornton. Steffen went 10 of 13 from the
floor (including the Greyhounds’ lone 3-pointer) in scoring a game-high
21 points, while Thornton added 14 points off the bench.

Thornton,
who was 7 of 10 from the floor, is undoubtedly a very early leading
candidate for Miss Basketball in 2011. She impressed with both her
ability to go coast-to-coast as well as to athletically defend.

Neither team led by more than four points through the first three quarters, when there were 10 ties and four lead changes.

Smith’s
inside reverse post move to open the second half gave the Royals a
one-point lead they would not relinquish. Trailing by one point at
intermission at 23-22, HSE outscored the Greyhounds 32-27 in the second
half.

Carmel (4-1) trailed 37-36 to begin the fourth quarter,
but three consecutive turnovers proved to be too much to overcome as
HSE stretched the lead to six in the first three minutes of the final
period.

With just under two minutes to go, HSE enjoyed its
largest lead at 51-44. Yet following two missed free throws by HSE
senior Laura Cook at the 1:40 mark and a pair of Royal turnovers,
Carmel got within two points at 52-50 with 9.1 seconds remaining.

But
after a Carmel timeout, HSE senior guard Victoria Filson avoided being
fouled with a nifty cross-over dribble and executed a perfect
half-court pass to Sannella for a finishing uncontested layup.

These
two excellently coached programs could meet again in the postseason
come February. That tournament meeting, which would take place in 4A
Sectional 9 at Carmel, would pit two contrasting styles – Carmel’s
match-up zone defense against the potentially outstanding marksmanship
of the Royals’ perimeter shooters.

Since HSE can match up with the inside play of Steffen and Thornton, the edge may remain with the Royals.

The good news for both? There is still a lot of exciting basketball to be played prior to sectionals!

BB 1A #1 Triton knocks off 3A #9 Plymouth 44-36

By Chris May
Boys Basketball Coordinator

BOURBON – It wasn’t quite the “Milan Miracle,” but for the folks of tiny Bourbon, the Nov. 27 win by Class A Triton over neighbor and defending 3A state champion Plymouth was a long time coming – and certainly a win for the little guys over the big boys.

With the 44-36 home victory, the 1A top-ranked Trojans (2-0) beat the legendary Pilgrims (1-1) for just the third time ever and the first in 17 seasons.

“It feels awesome,” said Triton 6’7” senior Jake Everett, who led his team with 15 points. “Every little 1A team always wants to beat a big 3A or 4A opponent.”

Added Triton fourth-year head coach Jason Groves: “It’s huge.”

Even the losing coach had a sense of the small school-beats-big storyline.

“I went to a small high school myself,” said Plymouth first-year coach John Scott. “I was always battling against the big county school – I know how Triton feels.

“It’s a great feeling for them, especially on their home floor.”

But the story of this clash of Marshall County schools was a physical, defensive game in which Plymouth guard Randy Davis was held to just six points on the night.

“I thought we did a heck of a job defensively,” said Groves. “Especially on Davis.”

For Davis, an unsigned 5’11” senior guard, the trip to Bourbon was a rough evening. The lone returning starter from last season’s state title team, Davis seemed the key to anything the Pilgrims will accomplish this season.

So needless to say, Davis’ one made field goal was not what the Pilgrims had expected. Nor their opponents.

“I told A.J. (Harrison) if he held Davis under 25, he’d be doing a good job,” Groves said.

But limiting the All-State and All-Star candidate to just one field goal and six points before fouling out?

“I would have never thought that in my wildest imagination,” Groves added.

“Defensively for Triton, I thought they had a great game plan,” said Scott. “Obviously, you have to stop Randy, and they did a great job at that.”

Davis’ limitations were courtesy of a Trojan defense that held Plymouth to just six made field goals through the first three quarters. Foul trouble also piled on quickly for the Pilgrims in the third quarter.

After scoring his first two points with just 3:54 left in the third quarter, Davis’ second, third, and fourth fouls quickly followed in the next 90 seconds.

By the time the senior was whistled for his fourth personal when he slapped at the ball, 1:39 was left in the third quarter and Plymouth trailed 23-16.

Thankfully for Plymouth, Nick Neidlinger had found some touch. The 6’3” senior hit three of the Pilgrims’ five first-half field goals (two of them behind the arc) and accounted for half of their points when Davis picked up his fourth foul.

“Nick can step up and hit the three, and he can drive,” Scott said.

Davis was relegated to the bench and wouldn’t return until the 6:19 mark in the fourth quarter. With Davis out of the game, Triton started a run that also held the Pilgrims scoreless through the 4:17 mark.

By that point, Triton had outscored Plymouth 8-3 since Davis’ fourth foul, and the Trojans had their largest lead of the game at 31-19.

A brief comeback led by 11 points between Neidlinger and Davis closed it to a 38-31 game with 1:18 left, but Triton hit six of their final eight free throws as Plymouth was forced to foul – including Davis’ fifth with 21.1 seconds left.

The game may have been a foreshadowing of what is to come for each team this season.

Plymouth is dealing with a high level of turnover this season – not only of players but also on the bench, from where legendary and two-time state championship coach Jack Edison stepped away. His son Michael had been tabbed his replacement but was replaced himself before the start of the season.

Scott, meanwhile, is labeled an interim coach and seems to have no desire to keep the job beyond this season.

The Trojans, on the other hand – just three years removed from a 4-17 season – are returning everyone from last year’s 14-8 team. Triton now has seven seniors and is a team many (including yours truly – see here) are targeting as a 1A title contender.

“It kind of surprised me it was this much of a defensive struggle,” Groves said. “The thing I liked the most was our kids recognized that, and they took care of the ball and took good shots.”

Three Trojans carried a majority of the scoring load. Everett – a Bethel College recruit – had 15 points, while 6’4” senior forward Troy McIntyre added 14, eight of those coming in the fourth quarter (and a majority at the free throw line, where the winners shot 13 of 16 in the final period). Fellow senior Harrison had eight.

Six-foot-three junior Colton Keel went for five points while junior guard Joel Meister hit two free throws – the Trojans’ only points off the bench.

For Plymouth, Neidlinger finished with a game-high 18 points while Davis and 5’8” junior Austin Hodges chipped in six apiece. Senior post player Ryan Welch and junior guard Brandon Elliott each had three points.

“I was so pleased with our defense,” Scott said. “I’d like to think that that’s the best defensive team Triton’s going to face this year. But we have to get better offensively as a team – there’s no doubt about that.

“Our offense wasn’t in synch tonight. Our cutters and our passers and our screeners were just one to two seconds apart from each other all night long, and that’s a credit to Triton’s defense.”

So did Groves feel as if his team’s victory would grab statewide attention?

“I’m sure it probably does – they’re the defending 3A state champs,” Groves said. “But to be honest, we’re not too concerned with that. We’re just trying to get better and beat NorthWood next game.

“But we really enjoy this victory. That’s for sure.”
