COMMENT/STORY: Hmmm,
think the Warriors – 49-21 pummelers of Hamilton Southeastern last week – would
fare slightly better in the Hoosier Crossroads than in the MIC – a 56-7 defeat
two weeks ago at Center Grove? They made need three or four scoreboards for
next week’s battle with Lawrence Central (44 and 73 in the postseason).

appear the wrong team was ranked here, based on the power numbers and the

LAST MEETING: Western, 42-21, sectional, Oct. 19, 2007.
SCORE: Yorktown, 22-21

COMMENT/STORY: One
of the games of the night, according to my illustrious colleague M. McGraw. The

two-point conversion.

FB SECT. 13: Zionsville continues dominance over 4A #14 Mooresville, 28-15

By Jessica Brooks

Staff Writer

ZIONSVILLE
– It was a fight to the finish Halloween night as 14th-ranked
Mooresville faced off against host Zionsville in the Class 4A Sectional 13
semifinal. But in the end, Carson Cramer’s two rushing touchdowns and 100-plus
yards were enough for the Eagles to upend their ranked adversary, 28-15.

It
was still anyone’s game at halftime after Cramer (22 carries, 103 yards)
sandwiched 47- and two-yard scoring runs around a 99-yard kickoff return by
Aric Bigham. But leading 14-7, a determined Zionsville defense set the tone to
start the third quarter, forcing a Mooresville punt after permitting just a few
yards on its first possession.

Zionsville
(7-4) rewarded its defense midway through the period when quarterback Melvin
Woodard hit Gene Barrett on a five-yard TD pass for a touchdown, and the extra
point brought the score to 21-7.

The
Pioneers (8-3) started their next possession on the Zionsville 20 and moved
right up the field after a 30-yard pass to wide receiver Shaefer Roloff (five
catches, 86 yards). But a Zionsville sack forced a field goal attempt, and the
39-yard effort was no good.

Zionsville
pushed its lead to 28-7 in the fourth quarter on a 33-yard pass from Woodard (an
efficient 7 of 15 for 101 yards) to Jack Denton. Mooresville tallied the evening’s
final score on Bigham’s two-yard run and a two-point conversion run by Nick
Westfall in the game’s last minute.

Next
up for the Eagles will be the Nov. 7 Sectional 13 title tilt at home against Plainfield
(9-2).

that football fans in Mooresville have nightmares about Zionsville? Share

FB: The “spread” offense (Part 1 of 3)

By
The Waterboy

Contributing
Water

These
days, radio and TV commentators are talking more and more about the “spread”
offense. You hear about coaches wanting to go to more of a spread look, or at
least have a spread package in their offensive attack.

An
increasing number of high school and college teams are using some form of it,
including both teams in last year’s Class 5A state title game (Carmel and Pike)
and both teams in the last NCAA title game (LSU and Ohio State).

In this three-part series, we will examine
the main principles that make up the spread offense. This is by no means a
complete list of every idea or wrinkle used in the offense, but merely an
attempt to simplify things for the everyday fan.

What
is the spread?

What exactly is the spread offense, and why
has it become so popular? Before we go into what the spread is, we need to
first describe what it is not.

The spread is not one specific formation,
or even a particular set of plays. At the collegiate level, there are spread
running offenses (West Virginia, Florida), and there are spread passing
offenses (Texas Tech, Purdue).

The spread is not a gimmick offense. There
are plenty of teams that run traditional plays out of spread formations to gain
an advantage.

It is not a new scheme that was just invented
in the last few years – and, like most successful concepts in football, it was
not the brainchild of a single coach or team. The next segment will explain
why.

The
history of the spread

One of the earliest known instances where
spread concepts were used came back in 1935 when the game of football saw the
first of many great receivers in Don Hutson of the Green Bay Packers. At the
time, the popular offensive formation was something called the “T” formation.
(Every once in a while, an offensive coach will pull this out of his back
pocket, usually on the goal line.)

It was basically a two-tight end offense
with three backs in the backfield in the shape of a T – thus the name.

                                                The “T” formation

Green Bay coach Curly Lambeau had the
brilliant idea of taking advantage of Hutson’s outstanding pass-catching
abilities and split him out wide, making Hutson one of  the first true “wide receivers.”
This new alignment forced the defense to pull at least one (and usually two)
defenders out of the box, allowing Hutson to get the ball in space. This
maneuver forced defenders “outside the box” to open up more space to run the
football.

The Packers ended up winning the NFL championship
the following season, thanks in no small part to the prolific receiving skills
of Hutson.

                                    Hutson
split out in the “Split T”

Neither Hutson nor Lambeau knew it, but
they had changed the game of football forever.

Now let’s move to the early 1960s, where
the birth of the American Football League also featured the birth of the
vertical passing attack. Teams like the Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers,
and Buffalo Bills were playing with a new and exciting style.

Quarterbacks like Jack Kemp, Tom Flores,
and Darryl Lammonica played in an aggressive, attacking offense that placed an
emphasis on the big play. Contrast that with the “three yards and a cloud of
dust” style in the National Football League that was typified by Vince
Lombardi’s Packers.

One of the innovators of the new style was
San Diego head coach Sid Gillman, who added lots of motions, shifting, and a
variance of formations to confuse the defense. Needless to say, the Chargers
traditionally had a potent offense. The multiple formations and motions used by
the Chargers allowed them to virtually dictate to the opponent what fronts and
coverages they could use.

This was another early spread concept,
using formations and motions to get your opponent out of his comfort zone.

One of Gillman’s earliest assistants was a
very good student, and he combined the concepts he learned in San Diego with
philosophies he took from Oakland under Al Davis as well as quick passing-game
notes from the great Paul Brown. This young coach finally added in a few of his
own ideas and eventually landed in San Francisco.

This coach’s name was Bill Walsh, and he
would go on to be one of the most innovative and successful coaches in football
history.

Walsh’s “West Coast Offense” was not really
a spread attack to start out with. The coach limited the amount of multiple-receiver
sets used in the offense, partly because of philosophy but mostly because
running backs like Roger Craig had hands just as good as the receivers on the
team. The 49ers also did not use the shotgun formation because Walsh did not
like the possibility of a bad snap over the QB’s head.

With the new offense came concepts that
future spread coaches took as their own. Walsh continued to use formations and
motions to his advantage, running the same plays out of different looks to keep
the defense off-balance.

Another thing that made the Niners’ offense
so dangerous was that every person who was not an offensive lineman was a
threat to catch the ball and make a run after the catch. Halfback Roger Craig
became the first player to ever earn 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving in
the same season in this offense, a feat matched only by Marshall Faulk several
years later.

The old saying that necessity is the mother
of invention was proved true when offenses were forced to use more three- and
four-wide receiver sets. This was brought on because of two primary factors:
(1) The popularity in the 1980s and early ’90s of the run-and-shoot offense,
and (2) the invention of the zone blitz.

The run-and-shoot was a pass-happy offense
that used multiple-receiver sets to spread out defenses and let the QB and
receiver make split-second decisions based on the coverage. While the pure form
of the offense has all but died out (with the exception of coaches like former
Hawaii and current Southern Methodist mentor June Jones), many of the spread
concepts have lived on with the spread passing games that are currently out
there.

Also, the popularity of the zone blitz in
the early ’90s forced the offense to spread out the defense. A zone blitz drops
defensive linemen into short zones “underneath” that have been vacated by
blitzing linebackers and safeties. In essence, it allows the defense to send
pressure from just about anywhere, while keeping seven or eight back in
coverage.

When the offense was in a standard
two-receiver, two-back, one-tight end set, the defense did not have to worry
about covering the whole field and could give more exotic looks. By spreading
the defense from sideline to sideline, however, defensive coordinators were
forced to declare where the pressure was coming from.

Finally, with the increase in more-athletic
quarterbacks in college football, coaches wanted to get defenders out of the
box to open up the running game for the quarterback and tailback in the option
game. Thus, the “spread option” was born.

That brings us to today, where the spread
is used by most teams in one form or another. Before we’re done, let’s review
the basic concepts used in the spread.

Concept
#1: Spread ’em out

The first, and most important, concept used
in the spread is pretty self-explanatory: Spread out the defense to get your best
athletes out in space where they can make things happen with the football. This
is also useful for stretching out zone defenses so the offense can more easily
find the seams and creases in between defenders. It also allows the QB to get a
good look at who is covering whom, and it certainly makes it easier to
distinguish between man-to-man and zone coverage.

Concept
#2: Use formations and motion to dictate to the opposing defense

This is very important to understand
because, from a defensive perspective, formations determine how a defense will
line up and, in some cases, what coverage they will use. If you can give the
defensive coordinator a look he has not seen before, you will force him to
adjust – sometimes in a way that’s to your advantage. Using motion also allows offensive
coordinators to match up their athletes the way they want and, in some cases,
against their choice of defender.

Concept
#3: Every eligible receiver is a threat to catch and run with the ball

It was a requirement by Bill Walsh that any
tight end, tailback, or fullback, in addition to the established receivers, had
to have great hands. This forced defenses to play honest, knowing that they
couldn’t key on one specific player. This also gives offensive coaches great
flexibility in play-calling. Of course, it really helps if you have players
good enough to execute at a high level.

Concept
#4: Get defenders out of the box to open up space for the run

This is critical to the success of the
running attack. Many times there is only one back in the backfield in addition
to the quarterback, so there is often no blocking back or fullback to lead the
way. Therefore, the fewer defenders between the tackles, the better. The option
game is also effective because the defender being optioned is one less person
the line has to block, resulting in a numbers advantage for the offense where
there may be the same number of offensive and defensive players in the box.

Concept
#5: Force the defense to cover every inch of the field

This may seem redundant after the first
concept talked about spreading the defense out with formations. Even if the
offense lines up in multiple-receivers sets with the wideouts lined up all the
way to the sideline, however, if the offense never involves them in the game
(i.e. quick passes, screens, etc.), the defense will ignore them and put more
defenders in the box to stop the run, making it tougher to achieve offensive
balance.

A spread offense must have the ability to
pass or run to any point on the field. Without the plays and schemes to take
advantage of matchups, the offense is better off lining up in a traditional
two-back, two-receiver, one-tight end set and running it up the middle.

Conclusion

I hope this explanation of the spread was
helpful and interesting to the football fans out there. Stay tuned to
HoosierAuthority.com for the next installment, when I will talk about the
spread running game.

GSw RANKINGS: Carmel, HSE, Center Grove 1-2-3 in preseason poll

The Indiana High School Swim Coaches’ Association has
released its preseason poll for the 2008-09 girls swimming season, and 22-time
state champion Carmel leads the pack as we move toward the 2008-09 season.

Based on a theoretical scoring system from a 16-place
meet using the times/scores of the returning Top 20 individuals from sectionals
and state finals as well as the best regular-season times of the 2007-08
season, the Greyhounds tallied 217 points.

That put them well up on two-time defending state runner-up
Hamilton Southeastern (167), with Center Grove (93) a fair pace back in third, 1985
state champion Columbus North (84) fourth, and Homestead (83) fifth. Relays and
diving will not be incorporated into the ratings system until the third week of
the upcoming regular season.

FB: ‘Postseason Pick ’Em’ contest begins Halloween week!

Here it is, football fans – your chance to strut your knowledge for fame and fortune! (OK, a chance to be reasonably well-known and possess something of Minot value.) Hoosier Authority is hosting a pick ’em contest for the state football tournament!

Here is how this titanic battle of football brainiacs will work. First, the “Postseason Pick ’Em” contest begins the second week of sectional play. (That’s because even we don’t have anybody crazy enough to go through a hundred emails with more than 150 picks on them from the first round.)

Simply e-mail your picks by Friday noon ET each week to akirby@digitalsports.com. We will compute the results and post them on HoosierAuthority.com!

There are a few simple rules to this potential bonanza:

First, you must pick all the games for each week. Any game that is not picked will be counted as an incorrect prediction. Second, all entries must be submitted to the e-mail address above by noon on Friday before the games. Finally, make sure you e-mail your picks from an e-mail address you check frequently in case we need to get in touch with you.

Now for the BIG stuff! (OK, the little stuff that is a shameless attempt to draw you into the contest.) The leader after the sectional round of the tournament will become a star on HoosierAuthority.com!

We will travel to your location and video your picks against our leading staff picker. That video will be posted on HoosierAuthority.com the week preceding the regionals. We will continue to do that for each remaining round of the tournament.

Finally, we will supply the winner with a $75 gift certificate to a popular restaurant in his or her area. Come on, you know your girlfriend deserves to eat better than fast food every once in awhile!

Remember: The “Postseason Pick ’Em” battle begins Halloween week, and you need to e-mail your picks to akirby@digitalsports.com!

FOOTBALL? You bet! Share your thoughts on our Football message board.

FB SECT 21: 3A #3 North Montgomery holds off Brebeuf, 22-10

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

CRAWFORDSVILLE – The difference in the Class 3A Sectional 21 opener Oct. 24 between upset-minded Brebeuf and third-ranked host North Montgomery? The visitors turned the ball over five times inside North Montgomery territory, with the home team turning a pair of those fumbles into 16 points.

The result was a 22-10 come-from-behind victory for North Montgomery in a game the Chargin’ Chargers really had no business winning. The W also avenged a 28-26 sectional semifinal defeat last year at Brebeuf.

“You can’t win games doing that,” said Brebeuf second-year coach Ryan Gallogly, who refused to blame his team’s demise on a chilly, very windy night that saw pockets of brief rain showers in the decisive second half. “We were inside the 30 four times and got no points.

“There’s a reason they’re 9-0. They made the plays when they needed to.”

No doubt about that. In a game that was unbelievably balanced as far as statistics go (North Montgomery had 14 first downs to 13 for Brebeuf, while the Braves had 335 total yards to the Chargers’ 334), the host’s ability to not self-implode was critical.

Both squads committed two turnovers in the first half, but North Montgomery (10-0) stopped its bleeding with zero second-half miscues while Brebeuf (7-3) gave it away three more times. Game, set, match.

The loss tarnished an outstanding individual effort by Brebeuf running back Ryan Kroot. The 6-foot, 190-pound junior carried 24 times for 228 yards, with 153 of them coming in the first half and many on his own after busting through the line of scrimmage.

“He’s a good little back, and he’s got another year to go,” Gallogly said. “He’s closing in on 3,500 yards and 50 touchdowns (for his career).”

But Kroot was part of the problem as well. He fumbled once in each half – one of three Braves’ fumbles, with another two interceptions added on – the latter coming at the end of a 19-yard jaunt with under four minutes to play and Brebeuf once again driving into Charger territory for the potential go-ahead score.

The dagger came two plays later, when senior running back Isaac McGaughey busted up the middle and rambled untouched for a 50-yard touchdown to give North Montgomery a 10-point lead with 2:32 left to play.

The Chargers’ second successful two-point conversion made it 22-10, and McGaughey sealed the deal three plays later when he intercepted Brebeuf quarterback Mitch Overley (3 of 11 for 39 yards and two INTs) from his linebacking position and returned it 31 yards to allow North Montgomery to run out the clock.

“They threw that interception, and I was happy because I was there at the right time,” said McGaughey, who finished with 112 yards on 19 carries. “Then I got a lot of great blocking on that run.”

North Montgomery coach Charley German was literally all smiles after watching his team escape.

“We’ve been down a couple times at the half and have come back,” German said. “On a night like this you don’t want to shoot yourself in the foot, and they did that with five turnovers.”

The Chargers’ 20th-year mentor also had much praise for Kroot, Brebeuf’s own version of the Energizer bunny.

“You gotta shut that 25 down,” said German, who led the Chargers to back-to-back 2A state titles in 1995 and ’96. “Our defense with coach Josh Thompson took control in the second half.”

Yup. After Kroot & Co. gashed the Chargers’ defense for all those first-half yards en route to a 10-8 halftime lead, North Montgomery limited Brebeuf to only 57 yards over the final 24 minutes.

But with two exceptions throughout, Brebeuf – usually behind an up-the-gut long run by Kroot – would move into Charger territory only to come away empty-handed.

That wasn’t the case midway through the second quarter, when Kroot carried six times for 82 yards and ended a 10-play drive with a five-yard touchdown run. Senior Nick Miller’s extra-point kick gave the Braves a 7-0 lead, and they were in business again when junior linebacker Mike Witczak intercepted North Montgomery QB Clayton Dale (12 of 18 for 155 yards and one TD with two picks) at the Brebeuf 33.

But the Braves gave it right back on the next play when Overley’s pass behind the line of scrimmage got to Kroot just as he was being stuck by a defender. The ball jarred loose, and North Montgomery took over at the Brebeuf 23.

Dale scored on a one-yard run five plays later, and the sophomore’s two-point conversion scramble to the right put the Chargers up, 8-7, with 89 seconds left in the half … plenty of time for Brebeuf to go back on top heading to a warm locker room.

With Kroot leading the way with a 40-yard charge off left guard, the Braves moved into field goal position. A fumbled exchange between Overley and Kroot nearly resulted in yet another turnover, but Miller was able to put the ball just over the crossbar and inside the right upright with a stiff wind at his back for a 40-yard trifecta.

North Montgomery got the lead back on the fifth possession of the third quarter. Utilizing another short field following a 21-yard punt from deep in Brebeuf territory, the Chargers tallied two plays later when Dale rolled right before lofting a 35-yard scoring strike to senior wide receiver Brett Stamper (five catches, 84 yards) in the right corner of the end zone.

A halfback pass from sophomore Elijah Webster to a wide-open Stamper was well short on the ensuing two-point conversion, making it 14-10 at the 5:06 mark.

“Our offense was able to put together a couple drives, and we had that beautiful pass there in the third quarter,” said German, whose Chargers travel Nov. 1 to West Vigo (8-2), a 14-0 winner over Crawfordsville, for a Sectional 21 semifinal clash.

The survivor will face either Southmont (5-5) or Western Boone (4-6) Nov. 8 for the sectional title, with a Nov. 15 regional date likely looming against top-ranked defending state champion Indianapolis Chatard (8-1).
