Why can't these guys get any love? Hoosier Authority's Week 2 Underrated poll

By Mike McGraw, Executive Director,
and E. Shawn Aylsworth, Managing Editor

This weekâ??s polls featured most of the usual suspects in Indiana high school football. There are several teams, however, that we believe should be crashing the party. Where is the love?

We donâ??t know, but here is the Hoosier Authority Week 2 Most Underrated poll:

Lafayette Jefferson: If Lafayette Jeff were a MIC team, those dominating victories in the first two weeks could have been against the Sacred Society of Sad Clowns and Mrs. Fishbaumâ??s Finishing School for **** Girls and people would still be hailing them as the next coming of the â??85 Bears. The Bronchos may not be as good as they have looked so far, but the lack of respect is ridiculous.

Southridge: The Raiders narrowly lost to Evansville Central in a game they controlled most of the way and they beat Jasper, yet they canâ??t get ranked in their own class. Heck no, thereâ??s no anti-southern bias in the regular polls — and I am the fifth Beatle.

Plainfield: Two wins by a combined 91-7, including a 36-0 pasting of nemesis Danville, AND a No.5 Sagarin power rating, yet the Quakers are tied for just 12th in the coachesâ?? poll. Huh?

Twin Lakes: New coach and an explosive offense. They arenâ??t unranked, just underranked.

Franklin Central: We know the Flashes have lost twice, but the schedule (five-time state champ Warren Central, eight-time state champ Roncalli) has been brutal. Itâ??s an even bet that IU would be 0-2 against those opponents.

South Bend St. Josephâ??s: Indians sit atop the 3A power ratings after winning at 5A Mishawaka and thumping 5A Portage, yet they’re just fifth in the coachesâ?? poll.

Tell City: Another small school tucked away into southwestern Indiana thatâ??s flying below the radar. The Marksmen scored 42 points in an opening win vs. Mt. Vernon (Posey), then stayed within 20 in a road loss to monstrous Heritage Hills — yet nada from the coaches.

Charlestown: Very quietly, these guys went into Lawrenceburg and won last Friday night. Any time a Mid-Southern team beats an EIAC team on the road, it is worth a little love.

NorthWood: This is the same story as Franklin Central except in the smaller classes. Simply put, we arenâ??t ready to give up on the defending 3A champion Panthers quite yet.

Culver Academies: No. 4 in the power ratings but just seventh in the coachesâ?? poll after beating NorthWood â??? wha?

Ready for the competition, Round 2: BK's golf journal

As promised, HoosierAuthority.com brings
you a golf journal written by Brittany Kelly, a senior at Hamilton
Southeastern who has verbally committed to continue her academic and golf
careers at Ball State University
next fall. Hereâ??s Brittanyâ??s
second installment â?¦

Monday, August 28, 2006

So close,
yet so far away â?¦

Today was
the Hoosier Crossroads Conference tournament. When I was preparing for this
tournament a couple of days ago, I felt like I was hitting my irons and my
driver very well. When I arrived at the course and stepped out to the practice
tee, I felt the exact same way. I was so excited to play today. I could tell by
the way I was warming up that it was going to be a good day.

But â??? and,
of course, there is always a â??butâ? â??? I didnâ??t play to my potential. After the
first four holes, I was even. My last five holes on the front nine I bogeyed.
So I shot 41. I tried so hard to keep my mind clear of all the thoughts that
were running through it. I decided that I was going to finish out the back nine
as best as I could because I knew my team needed me.

But on the
10th hole, once again, I bogeyed. I wasnâ??t too worried about the bogey because
I knew I had eight more holes to birdie. So on the 11th hole, I hit
one of my best drives of the day. I stuck my iron shot 15 feet past the hole,
and I sank my birdie putt. That one putt got me excited for the back nine. So I
stepped up to the 12th tee, a par 3, and stuck my shot 4 feet from
the pin.

But my
luck had run out by then, and I missed my birdie opportunity. I finished out
the back side with a 37, two over par. I was upset because once again I didnâ??t
play up to my expectations. I ended up shooting a 78, good enough for
All-Conference. But to my surprise, once again, we lost. We got second place by
two strokes. Brownsburg won with a 307, we had a 309, and Noblesville had a
313.

That was
our last 18-hole tournament before sectionals. But on the bright side, everyone
on my team made All-Conference. Jessica Pigati stepped it up and shot a 76 to
lead our team. Christina Beyerl also had an awesome round with a 77. Autumn
Duke, Britney Martin, and I all shot 78. What more can you ask for in a team?

Our next
match is Aug. 30 at Stony Creek. In the next two weeks, my time is going to be
spent at the golf course getting ready for sectionals.

Week 3: Big games

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

BLACKJACK!
According to the Sagarin power ratings, there are 21 big games on tap in Week 3
of the 2006 Indiana
high school football season. Following is a look at a bakerâ??s dozen of the
really big showdowns as well as the pertinent pre-game numbers taken from John
Harrellâ??s wonderful site.

Donâ??t
forget to check back Saturday for a look back at all the action!

Northern Indiana
A pair of
payback games loom up North this weekend as Andrean visits Hammond Morton in a
Class 3A battle of unbeatens and 4A Lowell travels to 3A Griffith.

A year
ago, Andrean was a popular pick to duke it out with perennial Indianapolis
Catholic powerhouse Chatard in the RCA Dome. But the Fighting 59ers may have
looked past Hammond Morton, and that oversight bit them big time in the
sectional when the Governors swelled up with a 24-10 monster upset. Andrean had
won the last four meetings between the two, so you think a little revenge may
be in order?

Lowell
(1-1) took its lumps at home last season from Griffith (2-0) by a 21-0 count,
but that did not sidetrack the Red Devils from their steamrolling journey to
the 4A title with a classic one-point, come-from-behind win over perennial
Indianapolis Catholic powerhouse Roncalli. You may assume that 16th-year
coach Kirk Kennedy plotted out this Week 3 road trip against 14th-year
mentor Russ Radtke and Griffith as a 2006 litmus test for his Devils.

All that
reigning 3A state champ NorthWood, fresh off a pair of heart-wrenching road defeats
to defending 2A champion Jimtown and 3A riser Culver Academies, has to overcome
in its home opener is the high-powered offense of 4A Concord (2-0). The
Panthers own a slight 6-4 lead in the seriesâ?? last 10 meetings, but it was Concord that posted a
tight 24-21 win at home a year ago.

An unbeaten
small-school showdown awaits Lafayette Central Catholic when the Knights roll
into Michigantown to face Clinton Central. Following a 41-18 drubbing in 2005,
this clash represents a huge opportunity for CC to show it has moved back into
the same neighborhood as LCC, which has won six of the last 10 meetings.

Finally, another
Class A throwdown will be on tap at South Newton,
where the 2-0 Rebels host (perennial power alert!) Pioneer (1-1). Winners of 11
of the last 12 meetings in the series, including a 46-14 waltz last year,
Pioneer may have its hands full with the resurgent Rebels.

Central Indiana
There are seven
biggies set to go on the first day of September involving schools from the
populous central portion of the state, including a trio of league forays in the
Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference.

Ya gotta start at
the top, where three-time defending 5A champ Warren Central hosts Lawrence
North in a battle of unbeatens. There appears to be no let-up from the Warriors
after transitioning from the title-laden Kevin Wright era into a subsequent
roll under Steve Tutsie, who shouldnâ??t have any problem reminding his troops
that their last loss came at home to Lawrence North just ahead of the â??05
postseason. The Warriors technically already took care of that lapse with a
55-3 thrashing of the Wildcats in the sectional, but they undoubtedly would
still like to push their series advantage to 12-3.

Ben Davis knows a
little about winning state championships (seven under former coach ****
Dullaghan), and the Giants (2-0) appear to have returned to form under
third-year mentor Tom Allen. But they could be suffering a letdown following a
thrilling overtime win last week against Penn, so new Panthersâ?? coach Mark Haste
may have a shot at making his move from Tri-West Hendricks to North Central
(2-0) pay immediate dividends. Ben Davis has won seven of the last 10 in the
series and will be looking to reverse last yearâ??s 14-7 loss.

Carmel (1-1) hits the road for the first time in
heading to Greenwood
to face Center Grove (2-0), where the Trojans served notice two weeks ago with
a 13-3 win over Roncalli. The Greyhounds, meanwhile, silenced 2A threat Hamilton Heights a week after falling late to
perennial Indianapolis Catholic powerhouse Cathedral (and yes, we are done with
that perennial powerhouse thang). This series has been even Steven over the
last eight meetings as each school has won four times, including Carmelâ??s 35-17 romp a
year ago.

Defending state champ Cathedral downs No. 8 Brebeuf, 4-1

By Craig Adkins
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS â???Anytime that Indianapolis Cathedral and Brebeuf get together on
the tennis court, friendships are out the window, especially for the players.

For two teams that battled until the gritty end of their
boys tennis match Aug. 30, you would have thought when all eyes were on the No.
1 doubles teams going game for game into their third set that the match score
hadnâ??t been decided yet. Unfortunately for the home-standing eighth-ranked
Braves, No. 6 Cathedral had already clinched the match on its way to a 4-1
victory.

But that finality didnâ??t even enter the minds of Brebeufâ??s
red-haired combo of Adam Katz and Scott Schmelzer. After winning the first set
6-4, they fought back for every single point of every game after that before
ultimately succumbing to Alex Snider and Brett Barra, 7-5, 7-5.

â??Itâ??s a big-time matchup,â? said Cathedral coach Mark Noe,
whose Fighting Irish are the defending boys state champions. â??Brebeuf has
always been a big rival. Theyâ??re way better than their number eight ranking.â?

The most unique thing about Brebeufâ??s team is that the
Braves carry no seniors on their seven-man roster, and amazingly three freshman
man the singles positions. Taking command of the No. 2 singles match from the
get-go, Brebeuf ninth-grader Charlie Hurst parlayed every opportunity that
Travis Mandrell handed him in a 6-4, 6-3 victory for Brebeufâ??s only win.

At No. 1 singles, Chris Plump of Brebeuf had Cathedralâ??s Luke
Bielawski frustrated many times in their hard-fought match, but it was Bielawski
that prevailed over the freshman in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. No. 3 singles also
was taken by Cathedral in a stout 6-1, 6-0 outing by Charlie Russell over the
third Brebeuf frosh, Russel Kowlowitz.

Finally, Cathedralâ??s David Stauffer and Jeff Lucas captured
the No. 2 doubles match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over the Bravesâ?? Patrick Miller and
Jake Nice.

Brebeuf coach Rick Scotten has a lot of confidence when it
comes to where he puts his youthful players on the day of a match.

â??We had players battling it out in practice in the past
week, and now weâ??re playing freshmen at all three singles spots,â? he said. â??Weâ??ve
got a really strong group.

â??Theyâ??re going to be awesome to watch in the next few
