SAC: FW North wins tournament title, 74-70, over rival FW South

By Colin Altevogt

Girls Basketball Coordinator

FORT WAYNE â??? In a fast-paced game filled with scoring on both ends, a defensive play made all the difference.

With
five seconds to go and Fort Wayne North leading Fort Wayne South 72-70,
Southâ??s Tracey Underwood drove in for a potential game-tying bucket and
found his attempt authoritatively swatted by North big man Damarlo
Belcher. The Redskins grabbed the rebound and held on for the win in
the championship game of the Summit Athletic Conference tournament,
74-70.

North
got 32 points from Indiana-bound Eshaunte â??Bearâ? Jones and another 24
from Belcher, the majority of those on put backs. Jones was 11-of-19
from the floor, including hitting five three-pointers in the first half.

Despite
having played a semifinal game just a few hours before, both teams
wanted to run early. South built an early lead at 25-16 following a
lay-in from junior Jermichael
Washington.

North responded, scoring 13 unanswered to take a 29-25 lead at the 5:10. The run culminated in a deep three by Jones, his 16th point of the contest already.

South
regained the lead at 30-29 on a pretty, driving lay-up from junior
Derek Evans. After a three-point play from junior standout Fred Ford
with one second on the clock, the Archers led 37-36 at intermission.

South came fast out of the gates after halftime, though, getting a lay-up and later a pair of free throws from Western Michigan
recruit Juston Hairston. Hairston, however, was curiously absent for
major stretches throughout the game, though the 6â??5â? forward still
contributed 20 points.

The â??Skins led by five, 57-52, heading into the final period.

Holding a six point led with 2:25
to go, North sensed that the Archers were running a play designed to
throw an alley-oop to the athletic Hairston. Ford quickly pulled up,
nailing a shot behind the arc. On the next possession, South ran the
backdoor for Hairston who slammed the ball home with
1:53 remaining.

On the other end, Jones sank yet another three, his eighth of the night. The â??Skins led by four.

With
a minute to go and facing a two point deficit, the Archers needed to
put North on the line to have any chance of getting the ball back.
Unfortunately, South had only one team foul.

After
the Redskins moved backwards on a series of inbounds plays, Jones
sprung open into the frontcourt and quickly dished to Belcher for an
easy two.

South
scored six seconds later, then fouled Jones, who missed the front end
of a one-and-one with 14 seconds left. After Belcherâ??s mammoth
rejection, Northâ??s Grayson Wambach missed the front end again, but
senior John Hefty secured the rebound and knocked down two shots for
the â??Skins.

The
tournament title was Northâ??s first since 1986. Last season, the two
teams met in the semifinal with North prevailing 86-84 on a last-second
shot by Jones.

SAC: Archers on the mark as free throw shooting, forced turnovers key to FW South’s title game victory over defending champion FW Luers

By Colin Altevogt

Girls Basketball Coordinator

FORT WAYNE â??? Fort Wayne South employed quick defensive pressure and made the most of unmatchable early energy in beating Fort Wayne Luers for the Summit Athletic Conference tournament championship, 77-61.

â??The first time we played them, they handled (the press) well,â? South assistant coach David Goodwell said. â??We made little adjustments and rushed the ball once they got it in. We pressured the ball and I think that shook them up a little bit.â?

South got a lot of help from guard Shaâ??la Jackson. The Southern Illinois-bound senior scored 33 points, the most ever in a championship game and fourth-highest single-game total in tournament history.

â??Shaâ??la creates mismatches,â? Goodwell said. â??She shoots a true jump shot, which is very difficult to defend.â?

Luers certainly found Jackson difficult to contain all night. Every time the Knights pulled within striking distance, Jackson seemed to respond with points on the other end either from the free throw line, where she shot 10-of-11, or from the floor.

Between the full-court press and the offensive dominance of Jackson, Luers found itself in a hole early. The Archers benefited from seven early Luersâ?? turnovers and shot to a 13-4 advantage with 3:37 left in the first quarter. By the end of the period, the Knights were facing a 19-6 deficit.

â??I told them that the shots werenâ??t falling early on, but they will,â? Luers coach Teri Rosinski said. â??We have to be able to play defense and make some stops.â?

â??To South Sideâ??s credit, they took it right at us and we had a difficult time slowing them down.â?

South stretched the lead to as many as 16 in the second period. Luersâ?? MarKee Martin scored on a lay-in and three-pointer to cut the lead to 11 with a minute left in the half. The Knights looked poised to slice the deficit to single digits before intermission, but Jackson knocked down a pair from the line and South led 33-20 after two.

â??Every time we tried to make a little dent in that deficit, they hit their free throws,â? Rosinski said.

They did indeed. The Archers connected on 26-of-30 from the line, including a 12-of-12 performance from senior Marceya Mingo.

With 30 seconds to go in the quarter, Martin missed a three that would have cut the gap to eight. Jackson nailed another pair from the stripe, however, and South led 51-38 heading into the final quarter.

The Archers were never able to pull away until the final minute, however. Down 13 with two minutes to go, Martin hit back-to-back shots behind the arc-two of the Knights 10 three-pointers in the contest-in a span of 15 seconds. The seven point deficit was the closest the Knights had been since the 5:20 mark of the first quarter.

On the other end, however, Southâ??s Jarvisha Jackson scored on the and-one play. Luers would not score the rest of the game.

Southâ??s victory revenged a 41-39 loss to Luers in an SAC regular season match-up Dec. 8. South wins its first conference tournament title, ending the Knights three-year reign as champions.

Hall of Fame Classic Video: Diggins sends message with big fourth quarter as SB Washington wins championship over New Castle, 65-51

By Colin Altevogt

Girls Basketball Coordinator

NEW CASTLE â??? At night, the stars shone the brightest.

One game after Heritage Christian standout Kelly Faris scored on a last-second put back to save her team from defeat, South Bend Washingtonâ??s Skylar Diggins led a big fourth quarter surge as the Panthers downed host New Castle, 65-51, in the championship game at the Hall of Fame Classic.

Click here to watch a video montage of the championship game edited by Video Coordinator Eric Eaton!

(NOTE:

â??They are very athletic and a good group of ladies,â? Washington coach Marilyn Coddens said of her team. â??They really showed it tonight.â?

New Castle hung tough in the opening quarter but trailed by five, 14-9, after eight minutes of play. Both team combined for only three turnovers in the first.

The Panthers had trouble getting their offense going in the second quarter. Washington was held scoreless for 4:04 until Lauren Archie converted on the Panthersâ?? third attempt of the possession.

New Castle was unable to capitalize on Washingtonâ??s scoring woes, however. After a slow, drought-filled first half that included three turnovers in five seconds in the last minute of the second quarter, the Panthers led the Trojans 24-17 at intermission.

Following the break in action, New Castle emerged from the locker room with a greater sense of urgency. The Trojans went on a quick 10-2 run and with two minutes gone in the third quarter, led for the first time all night, 27-26.

With less than a minute remaining in the third quarter and the Trojans tied at 38 all, the New Castle faithful could sense an upset. Washington got a three from Cheneka Anderson on her only shot of the night and a lay-up following a steal by Archie, but the Trojans were still very much in the game heading into the final period down just five.

Into the fourth quarter, the enthusiasm of the home crowd had yet to waver. The
New Castle student section grew more vocal as some fans even began to heckle the sharpshooting Diggins. The sophomore guard responded in Reggie-esque form.

â??Fans will be fans,â? Diggins said of the late-game jeering. â??You just got to play through that. Thatâ??s part of the game.â?

Diggins scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the quarter. Five minutes after the game had been tied at 38, Washington led 57-40 thanks to a 19-2 in which the Panthers connected on 7 of their 8 shots from the field.

â??I knew my teammates would pick up the slack for me,â? Diggins said, â??but at the end, I just felt like I had to take over. I think we executed the plan really well.â?

The Trojans never made a serious run for the remainder of the contest.

New Castleâ??s Corie West led all scorers with 23 points, 14 of which came in the third quarter.

Diggins wins Classic MVP

South Bend Washington guard Skylar Diggins was named Hall of Fame Classic MVP. Diggins had 24 points in the Panthersâ?? overtime victory over Heritage Christian and 22 in the championship on 9-of-18 shooting. Just a sophomore, Diggins helped lead Washington to its first ever regional and semi-state titles. The Panthers finished runner-up, losing to Castle in last yearâ??s 4A state championship.

Other members of the All-Classic team (MVP excluded):

Katie Hacker, Franklin Central

Kelly Faris, Heritage Christian

Macey Elyea, New Castle

Corie West, New Castle

Ashley Varner, South Bend Washington

Hall of Fame Classic VIDEO: Free throws the difference in 3A No. 1 New Castle's 64-53 win over 3A No. 4 Vincennes

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

NEW CASTLE â??? Zach Hahn scored a game-high 24 points â??? 18 of them in
a stellar first half â??? Dec. 29 as Class 3A top-ranked New Castle
defeated 3A No. 4 Vincennes Lincoln, 64-53, in the opening game of the
30th Annual Hall of Fame Classic at New Castle Fieldhouse.

(NOTE: To watch the videos, you may need QuickTime
7.1. For a free download, click here.)

Hahn missed all six of his second-half 3-point attempts, but his
10-of-12 marksmanship from the line over four quarters helped lift the
host Trojans. New Castle (9-0) canned 19 of 26 free throws, including 8
of 9 to end the game, compared with only 8 of 12 for the Alices (5-3).

Hahn scored 10 of New Castleâ??s 12 points in the opening period,
going 2 of 4 from downtown and hitting four of five three throws. That
display included a 3-pointer with :01.8 left that pulled the Trojans
into a tie at 12. The lefty then drained both of his trey attempts in
the second quarter, adding two more free throws to lead the Trojans
into the locker room ahead, 29-25.

The 6â??1â? Butler recruit also added seven rebounds and seven assists in playing all 32 minutes.

Vincennes had opened quickly with a 9-4 lead following a pair of
free throws by senior forward Jeremy Cunningham at the 3:30 mark. But a
runner by junior forward Chase Stigall and both of Hahnâ??s threes drew
New Castle even at the first stop.

A Cunningham free throw gave Vincennes its last lead at 25-24 with
90 seconds left in a first half that saw five ties. But a 3-pointer
from reserve senior forward Drew Toner and a pair of free throws by
senior forward Bryant Hazelman ended the opening 24 minutes with the
Trojans having the momentum.

That energy continued in the third quarter as Stigall awakened from
a 1-for-6 first half by driving for a five-footer, then draining a
25-foot three to give New Castle a 38-29 lead. But following a timeout
from Vincennes coach Steve Combs, the Alices battled back with a 10-2
run to pull within one at 40-39.

The only points scored by New Castle over the final 4:54 of the
third came from back-up center Chris Robinson, who tallied on a layin
at 1:29 before converting a bunny on a nice pass from Stigall to give
the Trojans a 42-39 lead entering the fourth.

The 6â??5â? junior, who finished with eight points, then hit another
layin with 7:12 to go, kick-starting New Castle on its way to 22 points
in the period. The Trojans took advantage of Vincennesâ?? frigid 1-of-8
start from the floor to slowly pull away.

Senior forward Craig Heinz had paced Vincennes with nine points in
the first half, but the 6â??3â? forward fell victim to â??Fieldhouse
shooting in the second as he missed all but one of his nine field goal
attempts after the break. Heinz, who led the Alices with 14 points, was
joined in double figures by 6â??6â? senior center Morgan Jones (12 points)
and Cunningham (11).

Stigall finished with 12 points for New Castle, which advanced to the championship game against 4A No. 6 Indianapolis Cathedral.

Hall of Fame Classic Video: Second-chance buckets help 4A No. 3 SB Washington thwart 2A No. 1 Heritage Christian, 71-69, in OT thriller

By Colin Altevogt

Girls Basketball Coordinator

NEW CASTLE â??? Two of the stateâ??s favorites to win the state championship in their respective classes met Dec. 28 at New Castle and the result was an all-time classic.

With the clock rushing toward zeros and the game tied at 69, South Bend Washington sophomore Skylar Diggins drove in the lane but her left-handed shot fell off the mark. Washington grabbed the rebound, however, and Shalana Murray hit a short, buzzer-beating jumper from the baseline as the 4A No. 3 Panthers won 71-69 over 2A top-ranked Heritage Christian in overtime.

Click here to watch a video montage of both opening round matchups: Franklin Central vs. New Castle and Heritage Christian vs. South Bend Washington!

(NOTE: To watch the video, you may need QuickTime 7.1. For a free download, click here.)

The play was an almost exact replicate of one just 27 seconds before when Diggins missed a driving shot but Washington regained possession before Diggins dished to an open Murray for a baseline jumper to put Washington up one.

â??I knew we had enough time,â? Washington coach Marilyn Coddens said. â??Our kids have enough experience, and I truly believe in my heart that come crunch time they can handle it.â?

Diggins, one of the premiere scorers in the state, struggled through an off-day shooting. The 5â??9â? guard was 8-of-23 from the floor but knocked down 7-of-8 free throws.

Washington looked to capitalize off Heritage Christianâ??s early nerves by going to the full-court press. The defensive pressure gave Heritage Christian fits for much of the game as the Eagles committed 26 turnovers.

Heritage Christian was able to compensate for its lack of ball handling, though, by shooting 53.5% from the floor including a red-hot 65.2% after halftime.

After Heritage Christian opened up an early 7-4 lead, Washington clamped down on defense, holding the Eagles to a scoreless three minutes that included turnovers on four consecutive possessions. Diggins scored two quick buckets in the final minute of the quarter and the Panthers led 17-12 after one.

Just 12 minutes into the game, Heritage Christian had given the ball away 13 times. Gradually, however, the Eagles began to take care of the rock and by halftime trailed by just three, 29-26.

At the 3:58 mark of the third quarter, Heritage Christian sophomore Kelly Faris knocked down a three with a hand in her face as the Eagles went up 37-36. It was Heritage Christianâ??s first lead since 12-11 in the first quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Heritage Christian went on a 6-0 run, culminating in a nice pass from Faris to freshman Kaycee Jones to tie the contest at 48. Washington answered with a 6-0 burst of its own thanks to four more Eagle turnovers.

As the Panthers seemed to be pulling away, however, Faris brought Heritage Christian back. The Eaglesâ?? leading scorer score twice, the first a floater in traffic and the latter three points the old-fashioned way.

With a minute left, Faris stripped Washington point guard Emily Phillips of the ball and appeared headed for an easy basket that would have given the Eagles the lead. On a controversial call, however, Faris was called for reaching in. Her fourth foul, coupled with Washingtonâ??s retention of the ball, would prove to be a huge turning point.

Heritage Christian did regain the lead on its next possession with a pair of free throws from Jones with 45 seconds remaining. Washington tied the game when Diggins split a pair from the stripe.

After a timeout with 4.3 seconds remaining, Phillips stole a Heritage Christian inbounds pass, taking the game into extra time.

Washington scored the first five points in overtime. With 1:57 left, Faris fouled out after collecting her fifth.

The Eagles took the lead and also tied it in the final minute but could not hang on for the victory.

â??The moral (victory) is kind of nice, but from a coaching standpoint obviously you want to win,â? Heritage Christian coach Rick Risinger said. â??Ultimately we do everything in the season to try to prepare for the state tournament, so games like these obviously help us.â?

Diggins and Faris had 24 and 23 points respectively to lead their teams in scoring.
