Indiana boys All-Star team announced

The decision is in, and the magic number is 13.

Thatâ??s the number of Indiana high school basketball seniors who comprise The Indianapolis Star 2005 Indiana All-Star team.

Washingtonâ??s Luke Zeller will wear the coveted No. 1 jersey when the team plays annual all-star foe Kentucky in two months (June 18 at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green and June 25 at Conseco Fieldhouse). A year ago, Indiana fell 89-81 in Owensboro before rebounding the next weekend with a 93-90 victory at Conseco.

The All-Stars will be coached by Joe Buck of Pendleton Heights, whose assistants are Al Gooden of Harding and New Albanyâ??s Jim Shannon.

The boys 2005 roster (number, name, school, height, scoring average, rebound average*, college):

1. Luke Zeller, Washington, 6â??11â?, 19.0, 9.0 rebs, Notre Dame

2. Dominic James, Richmond, 5â??11â?, 31.1, 7.1 rebs, Marquette

3. Deonta Vaughn, Indianapolis Arlington, 5â??11â?, 23.0, Indiana

4. Nick Rogers, Pendleton Heights, 6â??8â?, 19.7, 9.3 rebs, Southern Illinois

5. Jason Holsinger, Lapel, 6â??0â?, 22.5, Evansville

6. Jordan Armstrong, Muncie Central, 6â??6â?, 10.8, 7.1 rebs, Southern Illinois

7. Josh Mayo, Merrillville, 5â??10â?, 13.7, Illinois-Chicago

8. Derek Drews, Elkhart Central, 6â??6â?, 20.3, 7.3 rebs, Western Michigan

9. Brandon McPherson, Lawrence North, 6â??1â?, 9.5, Valparaiso

10. Adam Arnold, Bellmont, 6â??6â?, 17.1, 10.1 rebs, Indiana State

11. Armon Bassett, Terre Haute South, 6â??1â?, 22.0, undecided

12. Darren Cloud, Evansville Reitz, 6â??2â?, 23.2, undecided

May: Top 40 Workout provides insight as to whom the Indiana All-Stars might be

By Chris May

HA.com Guest Columnist

INDIANAPOLIS â??? Your attitude and mindset April 24 at the Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top 40 Workout at Pike High School depended on whom you were.

For some players like Luke Zeller and Dominic James, who are locks to make the Indiana All-Star team, it was a chance to get up and down the floor and have some fun. Other players who were borderline All-Stars or considered long shots to make this summerâ??s squad were a little more serious and laborious during their drills and scrimmages.

College coaches were in attendance to watch their signees or to look for those few quality players who might be available and round out a recruiting class. Parents and grandparents were there to watch and root on their family members. High school coaches were there to support their former players.

And three coaches (as well as The Indianapolis Starâ??s game director, Pat Aikman) looked on knowing they would decide the roster of the 2005 Indiana All-Star team minutes after the event ended. Helping Aikman with the selections were the teamâ??s head coach, Joe Buck of Pendleton Heights, as well as assistants Al Gooden of Harding and New Albanyâ??s Jim Shannon.

Here are some numbers and assorted thoughts on the performances of the day:

All-Star locks

I am erring on the side of conservatism and listing only those that are truly, absolute locks:

2005 Mr. Basketball Luke Zeller, C, Washington: First scrimmage was his best performance as he came out firing and hitting three early 3sâ?¦ In that scrimmage, the only win of the day for his team, he had nine points, four rebounds, and an assistâ?¦ Nothing amazing from him on this day, but Zeller again showed a solid game, especially his shooting range and penchant for playing outside â?¦ May be listed as a center during the All-Star series, but make no doubt about it â??? he plays like a 3… For what itâ??s worth, his â??blue crewâ? finished the day 1-2 in their 10-minute scrimmage situations.

Dominic James, G, Richmond: Mr. Basketball runner-up finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and 6 assistsâ?¦ Led his squad with 10 points, six of those from beyond the arc, two rebounds, and an assist in their second of three scrimmagesâ?¦ Highlighted that scrimmage and exhibited his leaping ability by finishing an alley-oop from Evansville Reitz product Darren Cloud on what was probably the play of the day. His team was 3-0, including a win over Zellerâ??s team.

Deonta Vaughn, G, Indianapolis Arlington: Led a team that at first glance looked undermanned to a 2-0 start on the dayâ?¦ Finished the day with seven assists, which tied with Monroviaâ??s Adam Gore and Muncie Centralâ??s Alex Daniel for most on the dayâ?¦ Started off solid with a nine-point, two-rebound, three-assist gameâ?¦ Was prone to hanging out in the corners offensively, where he knocked down four 3-pointers on the afternoon, but also was very effective in running the point.

Other notable players

Adam Arnold, F/C, Bellmont: Almost definitely locked up an All-Star spot with a 17-point, 15-rebound performanceâ?¦ Grabbed the most rebounds of anyone Sunday and with a certain All-Star lock (Carmelâ??s Josh McRoberts) deciding not to play this year, Arnoldâ??s rebounding should be covetedâ?¦ In his second scrimmage, he recorded eight points and four boardsâ?¦ Performance no doubt was aided by playing on the same team as James; they worked the two-man pick-and-roll game quite often.

Josh Mayo, G, Merrillville: One of the stars of last weekâ??s North/South Indiana All-Star Classic was again one of the top performers this weekendâ?¦ Finished the three scrimmages with 18 points and five assists and almost certainly is an Indiana All-Star.

Derek Drews, F, Elkhart Central: Considered one of Northern Indianaâ??s best players, the 6â??6â? forward struggled with his shot, going scoreless in his first scrimmageâ?¦ Finished the day with six points and 10 reboundsâ?¦ Warmed up as the day progressed â??? his best game statistically was his third and final, when he was credited with five boards.

Antonio Dye, G, Mishawaka: His 17 points and seven rebounds were a pleasant surprise to yours truly who had yet to see Dye play, especially considering he had only two points and one rebound in his first scrimmageâ?¦ Best effort came in the second contest when he led his team with 10 points and three boardsâ?¦ Due to the struggles of teammates Wacey Hall (Evansville Mater Dei) and Drews, he was able to showcase more of his offensive skills.

Shawntes Gary, G, Concord: Another of the solid players from the northern stretches of the state, the 6â??2â? player made his mark in his opening game, scoring a team-high 10 points in that contestâ?¦ Finished the day with 14 points and six rebounds.

Jason Holsinger, G, Lapel: The Evansville-bound guard wasnâ??t pleased with his performance and honestly didnâ??t do much to help his case in a year with plenty of guards in the running for an All-Star spotâ?¦ Shooting is his strong point and he displayed it, knocking down at least one 3-pointer in each of his scrimmages, but he made a couple turnovers that he wasnâ??t happy about.

Nick Rogers, C, Pendleton Heights: Rogers had a solid day, most notably on the boards as he was credited with nine reboundsâ?¦ His big body will be another that is desired for the All-Star squad.

Jordan Armstrong, C, Muncie Central: Didnâ??t dominate statistically but turned in a decent performance as the only post player on a shooter-heavy squad (much like his role for Muncie Central)â?¦ Had three rebounds, an assist, and a steal in his second game, which was probably his best all-around â?¦ He is an All-Star.

Jeremy Holland, F, Austin: Having heard so much about the 6â??8â? forwardâ??s shooting ability, I was disappointed until his third and final scrimmage of the dayâ?¦ While he scored five and seven points in his first two contests, his shot wasnâ??t hitting with consistency â??? but in his final 10 minutes, he put up one of the top two or three performances of the day with 12 points (all on 3-pointers), three rebounds, an assist, and a stealâ?¦ Final numbers on Holland: 24 points and seven reboundsâ?¦ He, too, should be an All-Star.

Biggest surprises of the day

Andy Hampton, F, Shelbyville: This kid played incredibly well, finishing with 23 points and nine reboundsâ?¦ Playing on the same squad as 6â??11â? Brandon Parks (Maconaquah), the 6â??7â? IUPUI-bound Hampton clearly outplayed the bigger guyâ?¦ Best game was his second, when he recorded 12 points and two boardsâ?¦ Iâ??m not sure that one dayâ??s work will get him on the All-Star team, but stranger things have happened in the past â??? nonetheless, he turned in a great individual performance, especially for an alternate at the event.

Norman Anderson, G, Anderson: The second alternate to tear it up was the diminutive guard headed for Wabash Valley Collegeâ?¦ The 5â??8â? Anderson finished with over 10 points and had six rebounds and five assists on the day, but had some terrific takes to the hoopâ?¦ On a couple occasions, he drove in amongst the â??treesâ? and came out with a basket or great dishâ?¦ Put down eight of his points and two rebounds in his second scrimmage.

Darren Cloud, G, Evansville Reitz: This kid isnâ??t much more than a shooter, but he is a darn good oneâ?¦ Finishing with 20 points, three rebounds, and two assists, he was the leading scorer in the first scrimmage of the day, when he had 11 points (three 3-pointers) and there assistsâ?¦ I had heard of the kid who had been described as one of, if not the best, shooters in the state, and that is no lieâ?¦ Says he is likely headed the D2 route, with a decision expected this week between Northern Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

Minutes after the action had concluded, Aikman and the three coaches were holed up in an office to devise this yearâ??s Indiana All-Star squad. Aikman told me the players will be informed Tuesday night, and the roster will be released in The Indianapolis Star Wednesday morning.

Check back to HoosierAuthority.com soon as Iâ??ll offer my formulations and opinions on what the team might look like.

Chris May is a high school basketball enthusiast (translation: hoops junkie and dork who will hit the road anywhere to watch games) who resides in Indianapolis. He is the host of High School Friday Nights on ESPN 950 (WXLW-AM) during football and basketball season.

2005 Indiana All-Star girls basketball team announced

Indiana Miss Basketball Jodi Howell of Alexandria leads a group 14 girls that comprise The Indianapolis Star 2005 Indiana All-Star team.

Howell, the Purdue-bound stateâ??s leading scorer at 28.7 points per game, is the only 20-plus scorer to make the squad. But with five players at 6 feet or taller, the team will be significantly bigger than last yearâ??s squad.

Twelve of the girls have earned Division I scholarships, and eight will be playing their college ball within the stateâ??s borders in 2005 and beyond.

The All-Stars will be coached by Chestertonâ??s Jack Campbell, whose assistants are Haley Beauchamp (Hamilton Southeastern) and Marilyn Coddens (South Bend Washington). All three coaches provided input for selection of the team, with Game Director Pat Aikman making the final decision.

The team will report June 12 for practice at Greencastle before tackling annual all-star foe Kentucky twice — June 18 at Bowling Green and June 25 at Conseco Fieldhouse. A year ago, Indianaâ??s girls swept Kentucky for the ninth time, winning 66-53 in Owensboro and 66-60 at Conseco.

The girls 2005 roster (number, name, school, height, scoring average, college):

1. Jodi Howell, Alexandria, 5â??11â?, 28.7 ppg, Purdue

No. 2 Lawrence Central girls squeeze past Illinois foe for Midwest Prep track title

Host Lawrence Centralâ??s highly ranked girls and boys track & field squads dominated a loaded lineup April 16 as each captured first place at the 27-team 2005 Midwest Prep Invitational.

On the girls side, second-ranked Lawrence Central narrowly slipped past Illinoisâ?? Evanston Township, 78-77, to come out on top. Eighth-ranked Fort Wayne Concordia finished third with 51 points, while No. 18 Carroll (Fort Wayne) was fourth with 38 and unranked Providence (36) finished fifth.

Top-ranked Fort Wayne Northrop (34.5) ended up a disappointing sixth, while No. 3 Ben Davis (28) finished an equally disappointing seventh. No. 24 Indianapolis Cathedral (23) was 11th, while 17th-ranked Carmel (17) finished 15th.

LC captured only three individual events to Evanston Townshipâ??s five, but the Bears capitalized on better depth to earn the team title.

Taking home individual firsts for LC were Jeanne Roberts (a meet-record 11.90 in the 100 meters), Carmisha Leary (39-01 in the shot put), and the Bearsâ?? 4 x 100 relay team (48.24).

Six other meet records were set by female athletes in the highly competitive meet:

?· Fort Wayne Northropâ??s Chauntel Elcock (55.40 in the 400 meters)

?· Danvilleâ??s Windy Robinson (4:57.53 in the 1600 meters)

?· Evanston Townshipâ??s Shalina Clarke (14.33 in the 100 meter hurdles)

?· Clarke again (41.41 in the 300 meter hurdles)

?· Cathedralâ??s Emily Breslin (5-06 in the high jump)

?· Tuscolaâ??s Johanna Wienke (123-10.5 in the discus)

The results:

Mike: McRoberts will regret his decision to blow off Indiana All-Stars

By Mike McGraw

HA.com Executive Director

Carmel standout basketball player Josh McRoberts has informed organizers he doesnâ??t want to play for the Indiana All-Stars this summer. That is a decision that is obviously within his rights, even if it appears to observers to be one born of selfishness.

We at HA.com believe that it is a decision he will regret in the years to come.

It may well be unfair to attribute McRobertsâ?? position to selfishness. He has not said anything publicly to the effect that this is in reaction to him not winning Indiana Mr. Basketball. In fact, the Duke-bound player, family, and school are being tight-lipped on the matter, and that is certainly their prerogative.

However, in the absence of any reason to the contrary, people will come to that conclusion.

Regardless of his reasoning, McRoberts is likely, and hopefully, going to look back years from now and regret his decision. Being an Indiana All-Star is the pinnacle for a prep player in this state. It is an honor that carries with it the respect and gratitude of an entire state for the rest of a young athleteâ??s life.

Moreover, there are players throughout the state who would give anything to be handed the opportunity to wear that uniform. One can only hope the young man has an awfully good reason to turn up his nose at the generations of tradition connected with the series.

McRoberts is not the first Indiana standout player to turn his back on the All-Stars after failing to win Mr. Basketball accolades. Brebeufâ??s Alan Henderson (second to Gary Rooseveltâ??s Glenn Robinson) did it in 1991 before heading off to Indiana, and Muncie Centralâ??s Bonzi Wells (second to Valparaisoâ??s Bryce Drew) did it 1994 before going to Ball State.

Disappointment is part of athletics. So is the responsibility of being a role model for younger children in the community. We believe that Josh will realize that some day, and it is then that he will regret his decision.

At least we sincerely hope so.

HA.com Executive Director Mike McGraw recently learned how to use a â??computerâ? and is currently working on the mastery of â??e-mail.â? He has coached hoops for quite a number of years, though, so presumably heâ??s semi-qualified to make the assessments above.

Hamilton Southeastern cheerleaders moving on to college gigs

Hamilton Southeastern senior Cassie Ringlespaugh will be cheering at
Indiana University this fall as a member of the coed cheer team. Look
for her as she cheers on the Hoosiers during football and menâ??s
basketball games.

Cassie will be joining two other past HSE cheerleaders on the IU
squad — HSE grads Lauren Sturgis (second-year member) and Megan Martz
(first-year member).

Katelyn McTamney, a Southeastern boys varsity basketball
cheerleader, has received a full-ride coed cheerleading scholarship to
Wallace State in Alabama. Katelyn will be cheering for football and
basketball.

And Mary LeRose, a HSE girls varsity basketball cheerleader the
past two years, has made the cheerleading squad at the University of
Dayton.

Special thanks to Hamilton Southeastern Athletic Director Ken Seitz for this info.
