SECTIONAL: Park Tudor and Brebeuf dominate at Pike, to meet in sectional championship

By Dave Fresher
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS â??? In a pair of sectional
semifinal matches Sept. 29 at Pike, Park Tudor and Brebeuf both cruised through
their respective matches. Their wins mean they will face off with each other Saturday
for the sectional championship.

No.
2-ranked Park Tudor went head to head with host Pike as No. 8 Brebeuf faced off
with Indianapolis Tech. Both won, 5-0.

Their wins
will setup a rematch from earlier in the season, when Park Tudor won 3-1 (rain
cancelled the fifth match after the outcome had already been determined).

In the
match between Brebeuf and Tech, the Braves lost a total of only seven games in
their five matches. But Brebeuf coach Rick Scotten knows it will be an uphill
battle against Park Tudor.

â??It is
going to be tough,â? Scotten said. â??It will be a long shot to beat them, but
people didnâ??t think we would beat them last year and we did.â?

Park Tudor
came into the Pike Sectional ranked in the state behind only North Central (Indianapolis), and the
Panthers looked every bit worthy of that ranking. Park Tudor dismantled the Red
Devils, losing a mere 16 games with 12 of those games coming in two of the
matches.

Luke Robbins
and Dan Tapiero played at No. 1 doubles and appeared unstoppable in their 6-0,
6-0 victory over Pikeâ??s Jeff Freije and Jared Travers. Robbins and Tapiero know
they will have a bigger challenge against Brebeuf.

Park Tudor
coach Dave Heffern is close with the entire Brebeuf team and has respect for
their players.

â??They have
two really good doubles teams, so our doubles will really be tested tomorrow,
Heffern said. â??Their No. 1 doubles team, Hurst and Katz, they are one of the
top doubles teams in the state, and so if my guys can compete and take them
out, we will have a strong chance to win.

In what
was built up as the most anticipated match of the day, Park Tudor No. 1 single players
Kent Winingham made quick work out of Pikeâ??s Simran Cheema. To Cheemaâ??s credit,
he played well for a young man who was injured. His shoulder injury forced him to
serve underhanded.

Cheema
hung tough, losing the first set 7-5, but he appeared to have nothing left in
the tank as he dropped the second set, 6-1.

Ready for the competition, Round 8: BK's

As promised, HoosierAuthority.com brings
you a golf journal written by Brittany Kelly, a senior at Hamilton
Southeastern who has verbally committed to continue her academic and golf
careers at Ball State University
next fall. Hereâ??s Brittanyâ??s
regional/state finals installment â?¦

Friday, September 29, 2006

State.

We won regionals by one shot, which brings me to today â??? the
state finals. Individually, I didnâ??t have too bad of a day. I shot 77, which is
five strokes off the lead. My team didnâ??t play as well as I thought they would,
but we shot a 326. We are currently in third place behind Noblesville and Martinsville.

We are down by 17 shots. It might seem like a lot, but there
is a chance to win still. Tomorrow isnâ??t supposed to be the nicest day, either.
It is supposed to be cold and rainy. But it is officially the last high school
round that I will play. I hope to finish off strong individually and as a team.
As long as we have a decent score tomorrow, thatâ??s all you can ask for.

There is still hope that we might have a chance. I am
keeping my fingers crossed.

Week 7: Warren Central's "D' makes a stand –

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

According
to the Sagarin power ratings, there were 24 big games on tap in Week 7 of the
2006 Indiana
high school football season. There also were 27 teams that stood undefeated,
but that number now has shriveled by two.

With a nod
of thanks for better (though chillier and windier) weather, hereâ??s a review of
the big games from Week 7:

Northern Indiana
10 big
games â?¦

GAME TIME: 7 pm ET, Sheumann Stadium.
COACHES: Dave Shelbourne, 37-15 in 5th
year at Avon, 187-126 in 30th year overall.
Fred Kutruff, 81-42 in 12th year at Lafayette Jeff.
SAGARIN RATINGS: Lafayette Jeff, 93.21, 5th overall, 4th
in Class 5A. Avon, 75.82, 38th overall, 20th

SERIES LAST 10 YEARS: Avon, 1-0.
FINAL: Jeff
58, Avon 52 (2 OT)
COMMENT:
Humminuh, humminuh, HUMMINUH! Oh wait, look at that score from last year. Evidently,
holding Avon â??? which led 38-17 going into the
fourth quarter â??? to less than 55 points is the key.

GAME TIME: 7 pm CT, Kiwanis Field (WWLO,
89.1 FM).
COACHES: Chip Pettit, 35-25 in 6th year
at Crown Point,
40-32 in 8th year overall. Bob Schellinger, 76-61 in 14th year at LaPorte,

FINAL: Crown Point 42, LaPorte

COMMENT:
I am sensing a theme here â?¦ looks like the defenses across the state may have
gotten left on the bus.

GAME TIME: 7:30 pm ET, Lakeland.
COACHES: Bob Miller, 19-28 in 5th year
at Fairfield.
Keith Thompson, 7-9 in 2nd year at Lakeland.

COMMENT:
Thatâ??s 28-0, 50-0, 55-0, 69-0, and 31-0 shutout victories wrapped around a
45-12 squeaker for the Falcons, in case you were wondering.

GAME TIME: 7 pm ET, Zollner Stadium.

LAST MEETING: Fort Wayne Dwenger, 20-12, Sep. 30, 2005.
SERIES LAST 10 YEARS: Fort Wayne Dwenger, 9-1.
FINAL: Dwenger
35, Concordia 7
COMMENT:
With Sniderâ??s second in-city upset loss (see below), Saints make sure that some
semblance of normalcy remains in Allen County with four-TD thumping of Sniderâ??s
other conqueror, Concordia.

GAME TIME: 7 pm ET, Harding.

Wayne North 15-21, Harding 15-21.
LAST MEETING: Fort Wayne North, 34-13,
Sep. 30, 2005.
SERIES LAST 10 YEARS: Harding,
7-3.
FINAL: Harding
43, North 14
COMMENT:
Hmmm, that strength of schedule seems to finally be paying off for Harding. The
Hawks took their lumps early in 21-point losses to 4A Dwenger and 5A Snider but
have bounced back with back-to-back-to-back pummelings of 4A Wayne, 5A Northrop, and 4A North.

GAME TIME: 7 pm ET, Weicker Stadium.
COACHES: Russ Isaacs, 168-26 in 16th
year at Fort Wayne Snider. Mike Cheviron, 4-2 in 1st year at Fort Wayne South,
64-51 in 11th year overall.
SAGARIN RATINGS: Fort Wayne Snider, 82.82, 19th overall,
11th in Class 5A. Fort Wayne South, 71.89, 57th overall, 17th in Class 4A.
LAST GAME: Fort Wayne Snider defeated Fort Wayne
North, 42-19. Fort Wayne South defeated Fort Wayne Elmhurst, 40-7.
VS. COMMON FOES: Fort
Wayne Snider 3-1, Fort
Wayne South 3-1.
OPPONENTS’ RECORDS: Fort Wayne Snider 15-21, Fort Wayne South
13-23.
LAST MEETING: Fort Wayne Snider, 21-14, Sep. 30, 2005.
SERIES LAST 10 YEARS: Fort Wayne Snider, 12-0.
FINAL: South
20, Snider 17
COMMENT:
I guess we should have seen his coming with Snider having survived by only
seven points a year ago, but it still seems weird to see the Panthers losing to
other Fort Wayne schools, donâ??t it?

GAME TIME: 6:30 pm CT, Amzi Miller Field.
COACHES: Justin Bogunia, 58-41 in 9th
year at John Glenn. Bart Curtis, 71-34 in 10th year at New Prairie, 98-63 in
16th year overall.
SAGARIN RATINGS: New Prairie, 74.65, 44th
overall, 6th in Class 3A. John Glenn, 58.55, 123rd overall, 19th in Class 2A.

Central (Union Mills), 36-10. New Prairie defeated Triton, 34-14.
VS. COMMON FOES: John Glenn 1-1, New
Prairie 2-0.
OPPONENTS’ RECORDS: John
Glenn 18-18, New Prairie 20-16.
LAST MEETING: New Prairie, 26-17, Sep.
30, 2005.
SERIES LAST 10 YEARS: New
Prairie, 8-2.
FINAL: New

COMMENT:
Cougars keep a-rollinâ??, with the only hiccup that bizarre Week 2 loss at South Bend Washington.

year at Jimtown. Andrew Thomas, 4-2 in 1st year at Culver, 52-22 in 7th year

overall, 5th in Class 2A. Culver, 53.23, 159th overall, 11th in Class 1A.
LAST GAME: Jimtown lost to Concord, 33-22. Culver
lost to Knox, 30-23.
VS. COMMON FOES: Jimtown 1-1, Culver 0-2.
OPPONENTS’ RECORDS: Jimtown

LAST MEETING: Jimtown, 48-0, Sep. 30,
2005.
SERIES LAST 10 YEARS: Jimtown,
10-0.
FINAL: Jimtown
42, Culver 7
COMMENT:
Jimmies, whose only setbacks are to New Prairie and Concord, figure to flatten last two opponents
and be 7-2 heading into 2A title defense.

GAME TIME: 7 pm ET, Dunlap Field.
COACHES: John Barron, 24-6 in 3rd year
at Plymouth.
Tim Dawson, 102-86 in 18th year at Concord.

COMMENT:
Minutemen wrest complete control of Northern

The Warriors have dropped two games â??? the first at unbeaten Plainfield and the second at unbeaten Mooresville.
Wonâ??t it be a treat, then, for the Hoosier Authority Fan Wagon to roll into Plainfield next Friday

COMMENT:
Oops! The Hoosier Authority Fan Wagon trekked three hours each way for this

COMMENT:
The power numbers predicted a double-digit Providence win, so this is somewhat of an
eyebrow raiser. Then again, the pride of Rockport is accustomed to tough games via
having to play in the Pocket (Heritage Hills, Southridge, Tell City,
Gibson Southern).

Friday Night Football: "Que Cira, Cira' as 4A No. 2 Concord uses big third quarter to whip 4A No. 11 Plymouth, 42-21

By Mark A. Howe
Contributing Writer

ELKHART â??? Senior wideout Mike Meade corralled two third-quarter touchdown
passes from Bob Cira, while James Cira joined Meade with a 100-yard receiving
game Sept. 29 as Class 4A second-ranked Concord posted a 42-21 victory over visiting
Plymouth.

Meade had
three touchdown receptions on the night, Bob Cira threw for 293 yards and four
touchdowns, and Monty Marion added 77 yards rushing and two TDs (one receiving)
for the Minutemen. The win virtually assures Concord
(7-0 overall, 5-0 in conference play) of the Northern Lakes Conference title.

â??Our
offense played well, said Plymouth
coach John Barron. â??Our defensive secondary played way too soft, but give them (Concord) credit. Theyâ??re
a great football team, and they made plays when they had to.

â??You
cannot expect to beat a great team unless you play great, and we did not play
great tonight.

Leading
21-14 at halftime, Concord held the Rockies to a three-and-out possession to open the second
half. Quicker than you could say â??conference crown,â? the Minutemen busted this
thing wide open.

First, Bob
Cira hit Meade on a 24-yard corner route with a high-arching pass, increasing
the lead to 14. Three plays later, Plymouth
quarterback Chad Clinton attempted a weak-side screen pass that was intercepted
by Nick Yoder and returned to the Rockie 23. Bob Cira was thrown for a huge
loss, but two plays later he again hit Meade, this time on a 29-yard flanker
screen that gave the Minutemen a commanding three-touchdown lead.

â??We are
not a good third-quarter team,â? Barron said. â??We havenâ??t been the last couple
of weeks. We talked about we need to get first downs, drive the ball down the
field, and tie the ballgame up.

While the
Rockies werenâ??t throwing in the towel, their next drive started at their own 4-yard
line when Concord
kicker Jeremy Howard, who had touchbacks on all his previous kickoffs in the
game, had his kick stall at the 1. Only an alert pickup by Brent Corbett kept Concord from scoring
another touchdown, this one of the special teams variety.

Friday Night Football: Class A No. 1 Sheridan rolls to 47-0 homecoming walloping of Tipton

By Craig Adkins
Contributing Writer

SHERIDAN â??? The Sheridan
Blackhawks moved that much closer to their goal of every season being perfect.
For perfect is what coach Larry â??Budâ? Wrightâ??s team was Sept. 27 in a 47-0 homecoming
pummeling of visiting Tipton.

Behind
the speedy legs of sophomore quarterback Nick Zachery (nine carries, 160 yards,
three rushing touchdowns), it was utter domination by a Blackhawk ground attack
that racked up 425 yards and six TDs on 55 carries.

â??We want
to win every week,â? Wright said. â??Homecoming is just another incentive to play
harder, and thatâ??s what we did tonight.â?

Fan Wagon Journal: "Rumble at the Ridge' a big hit

By Bubba Harnist
Staff Writer

pic
These Southridge fans took time
out of their pre-game festivities
for a group photo.

HUNTINGBURG â??? Gas money for the trip to Southridge for the â??Rumble at the â??ridgeâ?? An arm and a leg.

Submarine sammich for Wagon Man Josh Ember on the way down to
Southridge? Twenty dollars. (Hey, the boy can eat with the best of
them.)

Food at SADD tailgate party? Free.

Getting the chance to visit small-town Indiana with all the people who are crazy for high school football? Priceless.

Thatâ??s right, while the fans for Southridge may have been
disappointed in the outcome Sept. 29, there is no arguing that this was
one of the better stops on the Hoosier Authority Fan Wagon Tour. The
fans came out in full force to the tune of a standing-room-only crowd
on a chilly night in Huntingburg.

From the pee-wee coaches screaming their heads off even though their
team was struggling to the student section to the rest of the crows,
Raiders Field was loud from start to finish.

a pair of Southridge fans fired up
for the big game!

Upon
arrival, we were invited to the SADD (Students Against Drunk Drivers)
tailgate party. The crazies from Southridge do it up right as they
prepare for each of the Raidersâ?? home games. Our very own Josh took
home one of the prizes from the SADD bash.

From there, it was off to our area inside the stadium in about as
good of a spot as we could have asked for. Fans swarmed the stadium and
stopped by to say hello along the way.

We could have asked for better weather (although the rain never
really did come down that hard), but the game was an example of
everything thatâ??s right with high school sports. Two teams playing
hard, an SRO crowd, and two rural communities supporting their team to
the fullest.

All that, plus us being welcomed with open arms, made this a
wonderful stop. The biggest news of the night? We finally found someone
big enough to take Joshâ??s customized Hoosier Authority T-shirt off his
back. Thatâ??s right, the 4XL custom shirt is now in the hands of a lucky
fan that was more than happy to walk away with a shirt commemorating
the â??Rumble at the Ridge.â?

Thatâ??s all for this week. Next Friday we are back in Central Indiana
â??? weâ??ll be at Plainfield for the â??Battle for the Mid-Stateâ? between 7-0
Mooresville and 7-0 Plainfield.

on where we will be in the upcoming weeks. Only from Hoosier Authority!
