SECTIONALS: Baseball

By E. Shawn Aylsworth

Managing Editor

The 39th Annual IHSAA Baseball State Tournament Series is under way, and sectionals are in the history books. Following is a look back on significant sectional storylines.

Class 4A

Congratulations, Class 4A. With only five of your 13 ranked teams losing in sectional play, you have the honor of having followed form the most of the four classes.

And, the only two 4A ranked teams that were upset by unranked opponents both were victimized by the home-field advantage. No. 2 Lake Central fell to host Munster, 6-3, in the sectional final, and No. 9 Fort Wayne Snider blew a big early lead in losing, 9-5, to host Homestead in the semis.

Lake Central, which had blown past Lowell and East Chicago by identical 10-0 scores to reach the finals, itself blew a 3-2 lead with two outs in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Munsterâ??s Andrew Bilse, who entered the game hitting just .230. Munster then pounced for three runs in the extra frame to stun the Indians.

Snider, meanwhile, was rocking and rolling with a 5-0 lead when Homesteadâ??s Nate Carden hit a three-run homer in the fifth, opening the flood gates for nine unanswered runs for the host Spartans.

Among the not-so-surprising upsets were:

?· No. 6 host Elkhart Memorialâ??s 7-2 loss to eighth-ranked Penn in the championship game

?· No. 7 Terre Haute Northâ??s 9-8 loss to 12th-ranked Northview in the championship at Plainfield

?· No. 11 Castleâ??s 13-0 defeat at the hands of 13th-ranked host Evansville North in the semis (granted, thatâ??s kind of a scary margin of defeat, but North went on to blast Evansville Reitz, 9-1, in the final so look out, New Albany)

Of note involving ranked teams who advanced were a pair of Indianapolis-area sectionals.

Top-ranked Brownsburg scored 11, 11, and 12 runs in rolling to the Avon Sectional title. The Bulldogs spotted Ben Davis a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the final before roaring back with a 12-6 victory to stay perfect at 31-0.

Fifth-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral, meanwhile, ripped the heart out of host Lawrence North on Andrew Madiaâ??s three-run blast with two outs in the top of the seventh of the championship game in a 4-3 thriller. LN had ousted defending 4A champ rival Lawrence Central in a nine-inning semifinal, 7-6.

Class 3A

Class 3A saw upsets galore as nine of the Top 16 went down, none bigger than defending 3A champ New Palestine â??? another victim of home-field disadvantage. The second-ranked Dragons were slain in a nine-inning championship clash with host Pendleton Heights, which had also upset No. 9 New Castle in the semis, 10-8.

No. 3 Greensburg also exited early, dropping a 3-0 decision to Franklin County in its opener at Connersville. But the host Spartans also got jobbed, falling to Batesville, 7-3, in the championship game.

No. 4 Vincennes Lincoln, meanwhile, fell in an epic 14-inning final to host No. 10 Jasper, 1-0.

And No. 5 Western also went bye-bye, dropping a 2-0 semifinal to eventual Twin Lakes champ No. 6 West Lafayette.

Other ranked teams to go by the wayside were:

?· No. 8 Bellmont, which lost a 4-2 eight-inning semifinal to eventual runner-up host New Haven (conquered in the final, 7-3, by No. 12 Fort Wayne Dwenger)

?· No. 13 host Kankakee Valley, which fell to top-ranked eventual champ Andrean, 15-9, in the semis

?· No. 16 host West Vigo, a 3-0 semifinal loser to eventual champ Edgewood

Class 2A

As in Class 3A, there were nine upsets of ranked schools in the 2A sectionals, including Nos. 3, 4, and 5. Yipes.

No. 3 Boone Grove (surprise!) got ousted by a sectional host, falling 7-6 to Lake Station in the championship game.

No. 4 Cass, meanwhile, fell in the Wabash semis, 5-3, to Manchester, which went on to upset No. 12 Northfield, 4-3, in the finals for good measure.

And No. 5 Park Tudor probably thought it caught a break when No. 12 Triton Central was upset in the Indianapolis Scecina semifinals, 7-6, by Heritage Christian. Wrong. Heritage Christian prevailed, 2-1, over Park Tudor for the title.

Other ranked teams that said good-bye were:

?· No. 7 South Spencer, a 2-1 victim in the nine-inning Southridge championship to No. 6 North Posey, which outscored its three opponents by a combined 16-1 margin

?· No. 8 Hagerstown, which was eliminated by eventual champ No. 15 Centerville, 7-1, in the Union County semis

?· No. 10 Brownstown, a 10-1 loser in the Clarksville championship at the hands of No. 11 Providence

?· No. 14 Seeger, a 5-2 loser in the North Montgomery opener to Fountain Central

Fremont, meanwhile, obviously is being powered this postseason by the Energizer bunny. After downing Garrett, 5-3, in the Eastside opener in a standard seven innings, Fremont then posted wins over Central Noble (11-4, in 11 innings) and Churubusco (3-2, in 12 innings).

And No. 1 South Knox allowed but two runs in three games, rolling to victories over Eastern Greene (10-1), Linton (12-1 in six innings), and Mitchell (3-0), respectively.

Class A

Sense a theme here? The most upsets occurred in liâ??l old Class A, where 10 of 16 ranked teams lost â??? only a .375 survival batting average. The biggest names to go down were No. 2 Henryville and No. 3 Riverton Parke, both of whom lost in the semifinals.

Henryville fell, 7-6, to No. 10 South Central (Elizabeth), the eventual champ at Lanesville. And host Riverton Parke also got beat, 3-2 by a team of destiny, eventual champion Covington.

Two teams were tied at No. 5 in the final Class A coaches poll, and both lost. West Central fell, 4-2, in the Tri-County finals to South Newton. And Orleans dropped a 4-0 semifinal in eight innings to eventual champ No. 15 Northeast Dubois at Springs Valley.

Strangely, that 4-0 loss by Orleans was the only game in four tilts at Larry Birdâ??s alma mater that didnâ??t end in a football score. Northeast Dubois shut out West Washington, 21-0, in Game 1; host Springs Valley blanked Crothersville, 17-0, in Game 2; and Northeast Dubois trumped Springs Valleyâ??s safety with a last-second field goal to win the final, 3-2.

Other ranked squads to end their seasons a bit too early for their own liking were:

?· No. 7 New Harmony, which got a bye into the championship but still couldnâ??t survive the three-team Tecumseh Sectional, falling 6-2 to Oakland City

?· No. 9 Jac-Cen-Del, a 4-3 semifinal loser at Madison Shawe to eventual champ Oldenburg

?· No. 11 Frontier, a 14-3 guinea pig at the hands of top-ranked and defending champion Lafayette Central Catholic in the Carroll (Flora) opener (LCC outscored its three opponents by a combined 36-4)

?· No. 12 Oregon-Davis, an 11-9 loser in its opener to No. 13 host Michigan City Marquette, which then fell in the finals, 5-2, to South Central (Union Mills)

?· No. 15 Hebron, which dropped the Morgan Township opener, 5-2, to eventual runner-up Whiting

Ya gotta love one-and-outs, sports fans â?¦

A baseball tournament overview …

A field of 374 teams will begin play May 30 as the pairings for the 39th Annual IHSAA Baseball State Tournament Series were drawn May 19 at the IHSAA office in Indianapolis.

The tournament will begin with 64 sectionals conducted in four different classes beginning Memorial Day and continue through the week, concluding June 4. Daily schedules for each tournament site will be listed on the IHSAA website (IHSAA.org) prior to the start of the tournament. Because of possible weather postponements and other conflicts, it is advised to check with the host school for precise day and time schedules.

Each of the sectional champions will advance to a one-game regional contest to be played June 7. Each regional game will be played on the home field of the even-numbered sectional champion.

The 32 regional champions â??? eight in each class â??? will advance to one of eight semistate sites June 11. Semifinal games are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with the two winners returning for an 8 p.m. championship game and a berth in the state finals.

This yearâ??s finals will be played in Lafayette due to a scheduling conflict at Victory Field in Indianapolis, site of the state finals since 1997. The four state championship games will be played at Loeb Stadium â??? part of Columbian Park, the previous site of the IHSAA baseball finals in 1971, 1974, and 1975.

Note the following schedule change from previous years: Pairings for the state finals will be announced June 12, with the title contests scheduled for the following weekend.

Among the top-ranked teams in each class, Brownsburg (Class 4A) will face Zionsville in the first round at Avon; Andrean (3A) drew the bye into the semifinals at Kankakee Valley; South Knox (2A) will meet host Eastern Greene in the first round; and Lafayette Central Catholic (A) will meet Frontier in the opening game at Carroll (Flora).

Besides Central Catholic, other defending state champions will begin their 2005 tournament trails the following way: Lawrence Central (4A) meets Indianapolis Arlington in the first round at Lawrence North; New Palestine (3A) will play Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in the bye game at Pendleton Heights; and Hammond Noll (2A) takes on Hanover Central in the first game at Lake Station.

Some familiar faces in girls team tennis state finals

Thanks to our friends at the IHSAA, here’s a preview of the 31st Annual IHSAA Girls Tennis Team State Finals June 4:

Two of the winningest programs in the state — one making its third
appearance in four seasons, another that returns to the finals for the
first time since 1982 — make up the final four teams that will compete
in the girls tennis state finals June 4 at North Central High School in
Indianapolis.

At 10 a.m., Park Tudor (16-2) faces Zionsville (21-1) in one
semifinal match, while Evansville Memorial (17-1) takes on Culver
Academies (18-1) in the other semifinal. The winners and losers will
face each other for the state championship and third-place honors in
the 2 p.m. session.

Though in opposite brackets, Park Tudor and Evansville Memorial account for seven state championships.

Under the guidance of coach Dave Heffern, Park Tudor brings another
talented group to this yearâ??s finals, its fifth appearance overall and
first since 2000. The Panthersâ?? strength appears to be in their singles
lineup, where No. 1 Megan Martzolf is unbeaten at 21-0 and No. 2 Mary
Beth Winingham is 20-0 this season. Not far off that mark is Courtney
Rogers, who is 14-1 in the No. 3 spot.

Park Tudor, the state champion in 1998 and 2000, is 10-2 this
season in dual matches, falling twice to 2004 state champion North
Central of Indianapolis in a three-day stretch to end the regular
season, 3-2 and 4-1. The Panthers avenged those losses May 28, however,
downing North Central, 3-2, in the semistate championship match. (Park
Tudor had earlier survived a 3-2 match against Center Grove in the
morning semifinal.)

Evansville Memorial, coached by Susan Springhetti, returns to the
state finals for the second year in a row and will be looking for its
sixth state championship (1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996). The Tigers
finished fourth last year after losing to North Central in the state
semis and to Munster in the consolation match.

Five of the seven players from last yearâ??s team return for another
shot at the championship, with the only change occurring in the two
doubles teams. Catherine Hofmann and Jessica Bello were 18-8 a year ago
at No. 1 doubles. This season, Hofmann has teamed with Abby Greif for a
19-1 season record at No. 1, while Bello is 20-0 along with No. 2
partner Reva Mehdiratta.

Zionsville is making its third appearance at the state level in the
last four years, missing out only in 2004. The Eaglesâ?? only blemish of
the season came on the road and at the hands of the teamâ??s upcoming
opponent as Park Tudor handed Zionsville a 3-2 setback April 30.

Pat Slama, the coach in each of the schoolâ??s previous trips to
state, hopes to get the Eagles to the championship round, a hurdle that
tripped the previous Zionsville state teams. This yearâ??s team features
Mary Elizabeth Campbell at No. 2 singles (21-1) and the No. 2 doubles
team of Margo Harrington and Vicky Nasteva (13-0).

After a long drought, Culver Academies survived a pair of semistate
opponents May 28 and returns to the finals for the first time since
1982, its only other appearance. That year, the Eagles fell to eventual
champ North Central in the semifinal round. This yearâ??s edition brings
in an 18-1 dual record, which includes a pair of 3-2 semistate
victories over Warsaw and Crown Point. Culverâ??s only loss came by a 4-1
score to Plymouth in late April, though the Eagles avenged that loss
with a 4-1 win for the regional championship.

Coached by Jarin Jaffee, Culver Academies is buoyed by its three
singles players that are a collective 62-1 this year. Lora Dushanova is
20-1 at No. 1, while Romina Clemente is 21-0 in the No. 2 spot and
Avryl Klich is 21-0 at No. 3.

Note: Also in play June 4 at North Central are the regional rounds
of the Individual Singles and Doubles State Tournaments. Singles
players and doubles teams that win twice on Saturday will advance to
the Individual State Finals on June 10-11 at North Central.

Damon Bailey: High school career without peer

He wasnâ??t just the stuff of Hoosier high school basketball legends. He was a legend â??? and still is today. The story of Damon Baileyâ??s unparalleled high school career â?¦

In the book A Season on the Brink, John Feinstein wrote that Damon Bailey, the pride of Heltonville, was only an eighth-grader when Bobby Knight scouted him. Knight went back and told his IU team that the kid could already outplay most of them.

Baileyâ??s high school career proved Knightâ??s keen eye for talent.

In his freshman and sophomore years, Bailey led Bedford North Lawrence to the semistate tournaments. During his sophomore year alone, he averaged 31 points per game, with a single-game high of 51.

Then came the 1990 finals in the Hoosier Dome, where a record 41,000 fans watched Bailey solidify his reputation as the Prince of Indiana high school basketball. Bedford faced Concord in the big game. Concord, the runner-up the previous year, apparently forgot to read the glowing press reports about Bailey. Jamar Johnson blocked six of Damonâ??s shots, and Jim Hahnâ??s team pushed Bedford to its own brink.

Bailey responded coolly by racking up Bedfordâ??s last 11 points, including game-clinching free throws with 24 seconds left, for a 63-60 victory. At the final buzzer, Bailey ran into the stands and hugged his parents.

Damon Bailey was Mr. Basketball that year. He finished his career with 3,134 points, making him Indianaâ??s all-time scoring leader.

Anyone who watched Bailey play remembers something besides the numbers, though. He made it look easy! On the court, he moved with a liquid smoothness, even on fast breaks. No motion was wasted, no decision was hurried. It was the same kind of grace he showed in handling the pressure of being the most famous high school basketball player on the planet.

After stints with IU, the Pacers, and the CBA, Bailey reflected on his remarkable career. â??High school basketball is pure,â? he said. â??It is the highest level of what basketball is meant to be.â?

Gritty comeback against sectional nemesis sends East Central into regional round

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

SHELBYVILLE — Earlier this season, HoosierAuthority.com profiled the quiet success of the East Central softball program. During the interview for that piece, coach John Roth lamented that his teams had been good for several years but seemed incapable of getting past Columbus East at sectional time. The Olympians were simply East Centralâ??s nemesis.

And heading into the Class 4A Shelbyville Sectional championship game the evening of May 27, it looked for all the world as though the monkey was once again perched comfortably on sixth-ranked East Centralâ??s back. In practice just the day before, second baseman Ashton Meyer collided with a teammate and came away with a broken nose and concussion. The injury forced Roth into some last-minute line-up shuffling, resulting in freshman Kallen Hovland starting her first varsity game.

The situation got no better as the title tilt progressed. With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Columbus East hitters finally appeared to time the deliveries of Trojan senior left-hander Lauren Cormican. The Olympians pounded across two runs to take a late-game 4-2 lead.

It was at this point that someone in the East Central dugout picked up a bat and knocked the monkey halfway back to St. Leon. If you guessed that that someone was a fill-in ninth-grader, DING!DING!DING! Hovlandâ??s hit in the top of the sixth cut the lead in half at 4-3. And, she struck again in the seventh, helping spark another single-run rally that tied the score.

Meanwhile, hurler C.J. Combs, who had replaced Cormican in the sixth, overpowered Columbus East batters in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, East Central wasted no time in taking advantage of their second chance. Lead-off hitter Brittany Hoff singled. Brittany Weglan followed with a blast to the fence that ended as a triple, scoring Hoff. Weglan then scurried home on an overthrow at third. The two runs were all that Combs needed. She fanned two in a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning, and the celebration was on.

Next up for East Central is a date June 4 with traditional softball powerhouse No. 3 Martinsville in the Jeffersonville Regional. HoosierAuthority.com told you a few weeks ago that this was the best-kept secret in Indiana softball, and we have seen nothing to change our minds. These East Central kids are a gritty group of young ladies, and they wonâ??t go away quietly at any level of the tourney.

REGIONALS: Three-headed monsters do not disappoint in softball slate

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

And then there were 16 â?¦

The 21st Annual IHSAA Softball State Tournament Series concluded regional play June 4 at 16 sites. Following is a preview of the four-team regionals, plus the complete results …

Class 4A
Looking at the numbers, the only place that doesnâ??t feature three highly ranked teams is at DeKalb, where only No. 10 McCutcheon sits in the latest Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) rankings.

The Mavericks (20-9) face Anderson Highland (22-5) in Game 2 at DeKalb following an opener of Columbia City (19-6) and Fort Wayne Snider (22-6).

At Elkhart Memorial, Game 1 features a showdown between top-ranked and unbeaten defending state champion Lake Central (30-0-1) and No. 17 Penn (25-8), while fifth-ranked Chesterton (26-2-1) gets South Bend Adams (15-14) in the second semifinal.

At Center Grove, the opener pits third-ranked Brownsburg (27-4) against No. 11 Decatur Central (22-5-1), the Marion County champion. No. 2 Hamilton Southeastern (25-3) then faces Indianapolis Cathedral (17-7) in the second clash.

And at Jeffersonville, we get a Game 1 of third-ranked Martinsville (24-1-1) and sixth-ranked East Central (24-3) prior to a second tilt of No. 15 Jennings County (21-5) and Castle (16-12-1).

So, we could end up with a Class 4A final four of Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 10 at Carmel on June 10. Or of all unranked teams, just like in this yearâ??s 4A girls basketball state finals. Beauty, eh?

Class 3A
The 3A regionals are not as power laden as their bigger-school counterparts, but there are going to be three ranked teams on tap at Twin Lakes, including two of the top six.

No. 13 West Lafayette (26-5) gets things started at Twin Lakes with Griffith (18-14) before second-ranked Andrean (30-2) battles No. 6 Culver Academies (29-2).

At Bellmont, the unranked hosts (17-3) square off with Delta before third-ranked Northridge (28-1) faces No. 15 Whitko (21-4).

At Boonville, there also is a pair of ranked teams as No. 4 Gibson Southern (25-3-1) tackles Edgewood in the opener before ninth-ranked Heritage Hills (23-3) faces North Harrison (12-14).

Top-ranked Pendleton Heights (27-1), meanwhile, appears to have the easiest route to a June 10 date at Pike as the Arabians face Roncalli (18-10-1) in the second game at Mt. Vernon. Rushville (20-7) and Lebanon (17-6) open play in Fortville.

So you would appear to have Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4 all favored to make it through. But then thatâ??s why they play the games, right?

Class 2A
There is no place for the timid in 2A this weekend if you are anywhere near Garrett, where the three highest-rated teams will cannibalize each other for the right to advance to the final four at North Central (Indianapolis).

Second-ranked Cass (23-4) and No. 3 Eastside (26-5) tussle in the opener at Garrett before top-ranked Eastern (Greentown) (27-3) takes on Heritage (16-10).

Meanwhile, defending 2A titleist and fourth-ranked Hanover Central (25-4-3) gets a relative cakewalk at LaVille, facing 12-13 Clinton Central in Game 2 following the Rochester-Bremen (22-9) opener.

At Forest Park, the sixth-ranked hosts (22-5-1) play in Game 2 against Tri-West Hendricks after an opening game pitting Providence (21-4) against South Knox.

And at Shenandoah, we get another ranked threesome as No. 9 Frankton (21-5) opens with 12th-ranked Cambridge City Lincoln (18-4) before No. 5 Scecina (22-6), the Indianapolis City champion, takes on Southwestern (Hanover) (17-10) in the second tilt.

Thus, itâ??s eeny-meeny-miney on one of the top three advancing, No. 4 as a heavy favorite, No. 6 looking to take advantage of home field, and, uh, eeny-meeny-miney again for the fourth slot.

Class A
Regional play at the Class A level is a nice mixture of the other three classes: One site has three highly ranked squads, two sites feature just one ranked team, and the fourth site features two ranked schools in the struggle to earn a June 10 berth at Hamilton Southeastern.

At Clinton Prairie, the top-ranked hosts (25-3) play Cowan (11-9) in Game 2 following an opener of third-ranked Indianapolis Lutheran (18-7), the defending Class A champion, and No. 13 Southern Wells (21-5).

At Lanesville, the fourth-ranked hosts (23-2) play Springs Valley in the second game after Hauser (7-8) and Jac-Cen-Del open the regional.

At Caston, No. 9 South Central (Union Mills) puts its 20-10 record on the line vs. Hebron (21-8) in the opener prior to a second game featuring Pioneer and Lakewood Park Christian.

And at Barr-Reeve, second-ranked North Daviess (24-4) opens with Shakamak (13-15) before No. 11 Tecumseh (13-12) tackles Turkey Run, the last â??small schoolâ? to win the pre-class tournament.

So in Class A, youâ??re lookinâ?? at two schools with home-field advantage, a No. 9 that hopes to flex its ranked status, and a heavily favored No. 2. That what is says on paper, anyhoo.

Can anyone chase down No. 1 Fort Wayne Northrop?

By Mike McGraw

HA.com Executive Director

Heading into the 2004-05 IHSAA Girls Track & Field State Finals June 4, the overriding question is whether anyone has the depth to handle top-ranked Fort Wayne Northrop. The Bruins are coming off a dominating regional performance and have repeatedly shown the ability to score points in almost every event.

The answer to that question is likely to come very early — the Bruinsâ?? strength is in the sprinting events, and stern challenges await. Northropâ??s LaKeesha Burnett was a double winner in the regional, capturing both the 100 and 200 meters. Waiting at the state finals will be Lawrence Centralâ??s Jeanne Roberts, who set a new regional record at Lawrence North in winning the 100 and, like Burnett, took home honors in the 200 as well. And thereâ??s at least one more person to consider: Gary Wirtâ??s Bionca Gildon not only won the 100 and 200 at the Highland Regional, but she captured the 400 as well.

The key here is not whether Burnett wins these events, but whether she is able to place highly. If Northrop comes out of the dashes with 14 or more team points, the Bruins likely will not be thwarted.

One huge reason for that assessment is that Northrop has Shauntel Elcock waiting in the 400 meters. She has the stateâ??s best time in that event, and Elcock probably also can be counted on to score some points in the 800. Add in Jasmine Russell, who is a threat in both the hurdle events, and Northrop looks awfully tough to beat.

Perhaps the most compelling events will be the distance runs. Wendi Robinson of Danville is easily the favorite, having run the 1600 meters below five minutes on several occasions this season. Robinson, a senior, was the favorite in last fallâ??s cross country state finals but collapsed during the race, so there will be a great many people rooting for her in her last shot at a championship. Her main competition is likely to come from Wawaseeâ??s Rachel Stechtel and Alex Banfich of Culver Academies.

It has been a rather ho-hum year in the field events. One exception to that, however, has been the performance of Evansville Harrisonâ??s Kayla Tucker, who has cleared 5â??10â? in the high jump. That is just two inches shy of the state record in the event.

It all takes place June 4 in Bloomington, and HoosierAuthority.com will have it covered for you.
