PREVIEW: State finals

From ihsaa.org

Seven returning state finalists, including two teams that won it all
last year, have found their way back to the 36th Annual IHSAA
Volleyball State Finals that take place Nov. 3.

For the first time, the volleyball state finals will be played in Delaware County,
with Ball State Universityâ??s
Worthen Arena serving as the site for four state championship matches that
afternoon and evening.

Four different sites will be used for the morning semifinals, which
begin at 9 a.m. ET with the winners at each site converging on Worthen Arena
for their respective state championship match. Yorktown will host two semifinal
matches in Class 4A, Muncie Central will host the 3A matches, Delta the 2A
contests, and Worthen Arena will be the site for the Class A semifinalists.

The Class A state title match begins at 2:30 p.m., with the 2A, 3A, and
4A matches scheduled to begin no earlier than 4:15 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8:10 p.m.,
respectively. The 4A state championship match will be broadcast live to a statewide
audience on the Indiana Cable Network.

Ten-time defending 2A champion Muncie Burris headlines the list of 16
teams, along with three-time defending champ Marquette Catholic in Class A.
Those two join three runner-up teams from last year â??? Mishawaka Marian (3A), Fairfield (2A), and
Loogootee (A). Jasper (3A) and Brownstown (2A) were also state finalists a year
ago.

Marquette Catholic is making its ninth straight appearance in the Class
A state finals and has swept all five tournament foes in three games thus far.
Theyâ??ll meet Lafayette Central Catholic, which beat Wes-Del in five games last
Saturday to advance to state for the first time. Morristown will face Loogootee in the other
semifinal.

Loogootee has fallen in the final each of the past two seasons to Marquette. Should they
both advance, Marquette and Morristown also have met twice previously in
the championship match, with the Yellow Jackets winning in 2003 and Marquette
winning the following year. Marquette
also took a 2-0 decision between the two squads on Sept. 22.

Muncie Burris continues to be the 2A kingpin with 18 state titles to its
credit since 1982. Its semifinal against Fairfield
is a rematch of last yearâ??s final, which Burris swept 3-0. Brownstown, which is
making its sixth straight trip to state, will meet first-time participant
Woodlan in the other early match.

Brownstown has been to the championship match five times since 1998, and
each time was turned away by Burris. The Braves have swept each of their five
tourney opponents this season.

In 3A, Brebeuf will be gunning for its third 3A crown in the last five
years and will have to defeat Bellmont for the second time this season to have
a chance to do so after a 2-1 victory on Aug. 25. Bellmont, looking to advance
to its first championship round, is making its fourth trip to state since 1978
and second in three years.

Mishawaka Marian, which led last yearâ??s 3A title match 2-0 before
surrendering three consecutive games to Roncalli, had to settle for the
runner-up spot for the second time (1999). In the other semi, the Knights will
meet Jasper, winners of five straight 3-0 decisions and playing in its first
state finals since its 1991 runner-up season.

A first-time volleyball champion in 4A is assured as each team has
played at this level previously but not taken home the big trophy. Floyd
Central has come closest and is playing in its first state finals since its
1990 runner-up campaign. The Highlanders have won all five tournament tests by
3-0 scores. Across the net from Floyd Central stands New Castle, which is playing in its third
finals and first since 2001. New
Castle
resided in 3A the last four years before the
current realignment moved them back to 4A.

Carmel is
making its first trip to state since 1980, when eight teams advanced to the
state finals. The Greyhoundsâ?? opponent will be Elkhart Memorial, which is
making its second appearance in five seasons in the state semifinals after
surviving a five-game thriller with LaPorte in last Saturdayâ??s regional final.

STATE FINALS: Westfield, Banfich do it again

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Running Sports Coordinator

TERRE HAUTE ?? It was
just another day at the office for No. 1 Westfield and Culver Academies senior
Alex Banfich. The Shamrocks won their third straight state title, while Banfich
cruised to her third consecutive individual state championship as well Oct. 27
at the muddy Laverne Gibson course in Terre
Haute.

The ?Rocks
got a big race from sophomore Alex Holland, whose 48th-place finish
was fifth for Westfield
to end the scoring. The 81-point total was Westfield?s lowest of their four
championships under coach Scott Lidskin.

The
frontrunning of senior Maggie Bingham (fourth) and Kaitlyn Love (eighth) put
the ?Rocks up early, and the domination didn?t stop there. Westfield?s third, fourth, and fifth runners
outran their counterparts from every other school.

Second-ranked Lake Central finished second with 114
points, led by junior Rachel Zajac?s 13th-place finish. Typical
frontrunners Megan Plenus and Dana Payonk were 25th and 26th, respectively. No.
4 Carroll (Fort Wayne)
benefited from the fifth- and ninth-place finishes of freshman Brianna Johnson
and senior Chelsea Blanchard for third in the team race with 119 points.

Running in
a pack, third-ranked Carmel
totaled 146 points for fourth place, while No. 10 Bloomington North finished
fifth for the final podium spot.

The win by
Westfield moves
the ?Rocks up to a third-place tie with Floyd Central for the most state
titles. Carmel holds the distinction of the winningest
program in Indiana
history by virtue of its remarkable 10 championships.

Individually,
Banfich becomes just the third girl to win three state crowns, and only the
second to complete the feat consecutively. Banfich?s time of 18:21 was 17
seconds better than junior runner-up Megan Ranegar of Valparaiso. Franklin Central
Semistate champion Lorna
Whaley was third, with Bingham ?? last year?s runner-up
?? finishing fourth and Johnson rounding out the top
five.

Banfich
and Bingham have both finished in the Top 10 in all four state finals. (Blanchard,
who was ninth her freshman year and fourth as a junior, ran through illness as
a sophomore and did not make the podium.) The trio all cap off their high
school careers with a combined 11 individual state medals.
