GT&F STATE FINALS: #2 Warren gets its three-peat in surprising fashion

By Colin Altevogt
Track & Field Coordinator

BLOOMINGTON – On an evening where the top girls track & field teams were losing expected points left and right at Indiana University, two-time defending champion Warren Central weathered the storm best and took a 47-43 victory May 30 over top-ranked North Central (Indianapolis).

We gots video!!

Click here for Mike McGraw’s interview with Culver Academies’ 1600- and 3200-meter champion Alex Banfich!

Click here for Mike’s interview with multiple-threat Shelby Higginbottom of North Central (Farmersburg)!

Click here for Mike’s interview with high jump champion Ellie Tidman of Batesville!

The No. 2 Warriors – expected to finish third by both myself and colleague Brandon Jones – trailed by six points with two events remaining but notched 10 after senior sprinter Candyce McGrone won her third state title in the 200-meter dash. Warren dropped the baton in the final event, the 4×400 meter relay, but caught a break when North Central’s third-seeded squad failed to score.

(Click here for the complete girls state finals results!)

The Warriors got their usual contributions from McGrone, the Florida State-bound senior who won the 100 in :11.74 and the 200 in :24.18. She also ran the second leg on Warren’s second-place 4×100 meter relay.

Warren also got big contributions from thrower Monteka Flowers, who finished second in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Five big points from junior Qaniah Douglas in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump proved to be vital as well.

Although Warren Central only reaped scoring from three individuals and a relay, it was enough for the unexpected three-peat.

Defending state champions won nine of the 11 non-field events, with the remaining two having champions who graduated last year. Those repeat-winning events were McGrone (100 and 200), Park Tudor’s Hannah Farley (400), Culver Academies’ Alex Banfich (1600 and 3200), Batesville’s Ellie Tidman (high jump), Muncie Central’s Erynn Young (long jump), Lawrence North’s Felisha Johnson (shot put), and Bloomington North’s Rachel Deloney (discus).

Kathy Klump of South Dearborn took the lead from Southmont’s Creasy Clauser with 200 meters remaining in the 800 and won the event in 2:10.20, just missing the state meet record on a day that seemed to be too humid to produce spectacular times in the distance events. Tidman, meanwhile, just missed an attempt in the high jump for a state meet record.

Banfich’s victories in the 1600 and 3200 gave her eight total individual state championships, including cross country. That breaks the previous record of seven titles held by Brebeuf’s Courtney Adams and Kankakee Valley’s Celeste Susnis.

After winning cross country in the fall and both distance events in the spring this season and last, Banfich becomes the first two-time “Triple Crown” winner in state history. The Culver senior employed simple strategies of running away from the field in both her victories.

Banfich opened with a 70-second lap in the 1600 before clicking off three straight 75-second circuits to run virtually unchallenged throughout. After a brief tussle in the first half-mile of the 3200 from Wheeler freshman Christina Blair, Banfich pulled away and eventually won her primary event by 16 seconds over Westfield freshman Waverly Neer.

Pre-race favorite and defending champion Westfield won the 4×800 meter relay in 9:12.61. The well-balanced Shamrocks had a difference of only 1.1 seconds between their fastest and slowest legs. The quartet of Maggie Bingham, Breanne Ehrman, Kaitlyn Love, and Neer was comprised of Westfield’s top four runners from its state championship cross country squad.

Shelbyville senior Sarah Snapp won the 100 hurdles in :14.65 after pre-race favorite Chelsea Ross of Fort Wayne Wayne ran into the first barrier and stumbled. Snapp did double back, however, to place eighth in a 300 hurdles that Lawrence North’s Stacia Weatherford won by nearly a full second in :43.45.

Lawrence Central sophomore Margo Tucker won her first state title in the pole vault, clearing 12’6”.

Finally, Lawrence North’s 4×400 meter relay anchored by Weatherford took the last race in 3:52.33. A fast-charging Devin Gosberry was not enough to bring Munster from way back for the win as the Mustangs finished third.

Carroll’s Chelsea Blanchard, who finished second in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200, won the mental attitude award. She was second in the 3200 last season.

GT&F STATE FINALS: A salute to Alex Banfich

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

BLOOMINGTON – In the fall of 2006, a relatively unknown runner from Culver Academies named Alex Banfich wrote a diary for HoosierAuthority.com detailing the ups and downs of a cross country season.

Having never met Alex, I was struck at the time by the mastery of imagery in her writing. I will never forget her description of running on the campus of Culver in the pre-dawn hours and the shock she would experience when she ran head-long into a mass of cobwebs because her jaunt had taken her someplace where other people never went.

We also interviewed Banfich once on Hoosier Authority’s “Prep Sports Weekly,” a two-hour high school show we syndicated across Indiana. On that evening, I was struck by how child-like her voice sounded and how young she seemed for being such an accomplished athlete.

On May 30 at the girls track & field state finals, Alex won both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, running her total of distance championships to eight. In doing so, she became the winningest female distance runner in Indiana history.

After the awards ceremony, I finally met Banfich in person and conducted an interview. (Click here to watch!) This time, I was struck by what a well-spoken and well-rounded young lady she has become.

During the interview, Alex revealed that her college plans are to attend Princeton in the fall. Obviously, there is far more special about Alex Banfich than merely her ability to run. Despite the modesty of her answers, I got the impression that Alex fully understands both the scope of her accomplishments and exactly what it took to get there.

Far too often, we do not appreciate greatness until it becomes history. The name Alex Banfich will go down in Hoosier track history alongside the likes of Rudy Chapa and Maicel Malone.

It has been one of the great pleasures I have had since starting Hoosier Authority to watch the exploits and growth of this extraordinary athlete and person. She is a classic example of the role that high school sports can play in the development of young people.

So, here’s to you, Alex. You’re one-of-a-kind, and we are all better off for having known you.

BT&F STATE FINALS: Jonesie & Colin pick the winners

By Colin Altevogt & Brandon Jones
Track & Field Experts

HoosierAuthority.com’s Brandon Jones and Colin Altevogt recently carried on a conversation on the May 31 boys track & field state finals via e-mail – here is an edited of version of what they discussed …

Colin:
I’ve always called Ben Davis the best program in Indiana never to have won a state track title. It looks as if I won’t be able to use that distinction anymore after Saturday. I haven’t added up scores in my own prediction, but seeds alone have the Giants scoring over 70 points with no one else even close.

I think there are a few teams (Warren Central, Pike, Lawrence North, maybe Noblesville) that could give Ben Davis a scare. The fact of the matter, however, is that Ben Davis just has too much for anyone right now. Raphael Williams’ recovery nearly puts this on ice. I’ve been astonished at how well he has rebounded in the past couple weeks.

I know you’ve done your own tallying from your predictions. Does anyone else have a chance, Brandon, and if so who is it?

Jones:
Well, I think that the return of Williams along with the absence of Tra Wilson for Lawrence North makes it hard to pick against Ben Davis.

I do not have as large a margin of victory as many (including yourself), but I like BD’s chances of winning its first state crown. The Giants will score huge in the sprints, have a chance (although it is a long shot in the 4×800) to sweep all three relays, and will grab some bonus points in the hurdles and long jump.

I have Ben Davis at 69, Lawrence North at 58, Warren at 54, and Pike and Noblesville rounding out the top five.

Colin:
You’re absolutely right about Wilson. I remember saying that to you after you called with long jump results last week. Those 10 points – and there’s very little doubt in my mind that he would have won – could really factor in at the end of the night. In fact, I’m predicting he wins the 100. He has to take out his disappointment some way, right?

I think it’s going to be a lower-scoring meet than we have tallied up so far. Don’t be surprised if 55 points takes home the title. By the way, do you like your alma mater’s chances? Coach McNulty should immediately be given status as best track & field coach of all time if Warren can pull this one off.

Jones:
Yeah, much like Wright’s injury on the girls side, Wilson’s failures in the long jump really will cost his team, but MUCH worse. I have Ben Davis slated to win this meet by 11 points, and I think that we both can agree that Wilson would have been favored to grab 10 in the long jump. It really hurts.

Not a bad call by any means, however, on having him winning the 100 meters. Remember he was the “state’s fastest man” indoors at 55 meters. Then outdoors, he has played second fiddle to the BD kids (Williams and Terrell) all season long. However, he finished third to them last week at North Central IMMEDIATELY following his dismissal from the long jump. That kind of hurts your notion, but perhaps he has had a week to think about things and will come out firing.

It always seems that team points are much lower than we expect at this level, you are correct. It is hard to imagine Ben Davis scoring 70 or more at times, but let me tell you this: If they have 55, the other contending teams (mentioned previously) HAVE to like their chances.

Warren’s boys have a slim-to-none shot at the title this time around. I could see them finishing second but, much like their girls, you know what you are getting and not much more. Richardson and Collins will score huge in the hurdles, Spight in the high jump, and then about 10-12 relay points.

Not enough to get the job done, unfortunately.

Colin:
With Wilson out, I actually like Conley to take the long jump. Not exactly sure why, just a hunch.

You said Ben Davis has an outside shot in the 4×8. After the crazy race at Lafayette Jeff last week, who do you like in that relay?

Jones:
Well, the mystery surrounding what Fishers’ Drew Shields is going to do has me guessing, but I still like Noblesville. The Millers have been the team to beat all season, and just missing out on the win last week should be their wake-up call.

I have all five teams from the Lafayette Jefferson Regional medaling, with Fishers and Carmel rounding out the top three. The ‘Hounds are the kings of this event and will perform on the big stage. I have Ben Davis scoring two points here as the Giants grab seventh.

I went back and forth in the long jump between Conley and Pennix. Pennix has just been on fire the entire month. I cannot remember the last time he did not leap at least 23 feet. I think Conley is a close second, then after that it is anyone’s guess. This is my FAVORITE event to watch at the state meet for some odd reason, being a distance guy.

Colin:
I like Noblesville as well. I heard one of their guys ran sub-par last Thursday when they were outleaned by Fishers. Shields ran the relay before running 4:15 in the 1600. If he’s not on it, Fishers has no shot. If he is, they’re definitely among the favorites.

Shields has the fastest seed time in the 1600 by like five seconds. Is he the favorite? How will doubling back affect his chances against a fresh field that will include Sean Wilson?

Jones:
I think it depends on the way the race sets up in the 1600. If the pace goes out fast and Shields already has a hard 800 on his legs, I don’t like his chances. There is no way of guessing how this race will develop, so I am picking conservatively.

I did pick Shields, to be honest with you. But I understand I will be wrong one way or another. You are right – Fishers has no chance without him in the 4×800. I like Wilson for second, then the fun begins. I have Ladd Mercer third, Blake Dircksen of Noblesville fourth, and Colin Vance of your alma mater rounding out the top five. But I am not very confident in 3-9.

I say the winning time is 4:11-4:12.

Colin:
I like Wilson here. Mercer and Dircksen are two other guys who will have the 4×8 on their legs. That’s a rough double to come back and be competitive a little over an hour later. Remember, Wilson was leading the thing with 250 meters to go last year and very nearly got second. He ran in the neighborhood of 9:12 earlier in the season for 3200 meters and has laid low since then. I think the winning time will be 4:10 or a little under. It all depends on if someone will take it out fast.

If you think the mile is open, how about the 800? Wilkins has to be the favorite, but I really think anything could happen there.

Jones:
I understand what you are saying about the hard 4×800 leg playing a factor, but I just don’t think this mile field is as deep as previous years. Guys who have been there before like Mercer can still compete with the “best of the rest.”

Yeah, the 800 is ridiculous this year. I also think that Wilkins is the favorite, but I would not be shocked if someone else stole the thing. I am going with Wilkins based on the fact that I have seen him race more than anyone else in the field this spring, and he has been more and more impressive every time out.

It almost seems like he is toying with the field. He bides his time and then hits another gear – a gear that I am not sure anyone else in this field possesses. Not even going to predict a time here, but Holahan and Schoch have been battling each other with each’s time dropping over the past few weeks. I like Holahan second, Schoch third, Shields fourth, and Wysong fifth.

Colin:
That would be quite a day for Shields if he put in a 4×8 leg on a high-placing relay, won the 1600, then picked up fourth in the open 8. How about the 3200? Tito scratched out of everything else, and remember he ran 9:22 at the end of a sick triple back at the end of April. Is he the favorite despite the times being put down by Bayer and Witt?

Jones:
After hearing about Fout, my immediate focus turned to Medrano. At that time (three weeks ago), I began thinking how Tito HAS to be the favorite now. The triple that you mentioned had just happened a week earlier, so my confidence in Tito was riding high.

But I cannot stop thinking about how Bayer has continued to drop time EVERY week. He won that Franklin Central mile, which has carried him to an amazing outdoor season that very few saw coming.

I think that there are four guys who “could” win the 3200 – the two mentioned above as well as Witt and Gates. All will be fresh and will make this state put Fout’s news in the rearview mirror.

I am going with Bayer in about 9:01 followed by Medrano, Gates, and Witt, who will all be faster than 9:12.

Colin:
I think that Tito, when healthy, is just on a different playing field than everyone else. He was a national cross country finalist in November. I’m not sure any of the other guys are at that level. I think he wins in 9:02 followed by Bayer, Witt, and Gates.

Last thing: One of the big aspects that we’ve talked about leading up to the state meet is the importance of relays. Both favorites on the boys and girls sides have, arguably, the best relays in Indiana. Does anyone else get the stick around the track like Ben Davis?

Jones:
Ben Davis has a shot at the 4×100 record, one I thought would never go down. And the Giants could probably field a second 4×100/4×400 that could make a run at qualifying for the state meet.

Colin’s picks (i.e. the short-and-sweet list):

4×800 meter relay: Noblesville
110-meter hurdles: D’Juan Richardson – Warren Central

GT&F STATE FINALS: Colin & Jonesie pick the winners

By Colin Altevogt
Track & Field Coordinator

With state champions returning in nine individual events and a team race deteriorating with sectional and regional casualties, this year’s girls track & field state finals seems pretty easy to sum up. This is exactly why we should all expect a crazy meet May 30.

If it seems too simple to be true, that’s because it probably is. Here’s an event-by-event breakdown of what to expect, followed by predictions from myself and Brandon Jones.

4×800 relay
Three-time defending cross country state champion and last year’s relay winner Westfield has stacked its relay with its four best distance runners, effectively putting the rest of the field’s state title dreams to bed. Lake Central and Carmel, two other distance-dominant programs, should factor in up front. Most surprising of all is small Park Tudor, which stands a great chance to medal even without its top runner competing in this event.

1. Westfield
2. Lake Central
3. Carmel
4. Munster
5. Crown Point
6. Warsaw
7. West Lafayette
8. Mishawaka
9. Park Tudor

Jones’ pick: Westfield

100 hurdles
Fort Wayne Wayne’s Chelsea Ross has the best regional time by over a third of a second. Still, on the faster surface at Indiana University, anything could happen in hurdle races that are separated by barely an hour. A handful of other contenders have legitimate title dreams … if they can get to the finals. That could prove to be the most difficult part of the journey, however. Expect a few casualties to top hurdlers in the trials.

1. Chelsea Ross – Fort Wayne Wayne
2. Portia Bailey – Hamilton Southeastern
3. Camille Edwards – North Central (Indianapolis)
4. Rebecca Neville – Merrillville
5. Sarah Snapp – Shelbyville
6. Jessica Harms – Fort Wayne Northrop
7. Amy Sanders – Roncalli
8. Shirah Bennett – Fort Wayne Snider
9. Sara Bernzott – Connersville

Jones’ pick: Chelsea Ross – Fort Wayne Wayne

100
Warren Central’s Candyce McGrone will win. Barring a false start or some other extreme and unforeseen circumstance, she will get another state title. The question is whether that will come in state meet-record time. In my sectional preview, I said that Jeffersonville’s Shanice Gholson had the best chance to prevent a Warren sweep. With Ebony Wright now out, I’m sticking with that prediction.

1. Candyce McGrone – Warren Central
2. Shanice Gholson – Jeffersonville
3. Nikita Owens – Evansville Central
4. Jasmine Perry – Fort Wayne Wayne
5. Erica Blythe – North Central (Indianapolis)
6. Shea Brown – Fort Wayne Snider
7. Kate Muskat – Indianapolis Chatard
8. Emaryne Watt – Perry Meridian
9. Katie Popp – North Central (Indianapolis)

Jones’ pick: Candyce McGrone – Warren Central

1600
The more open of the two distance races, both Carroll’s Chelsea Blanchard and Beech Grove’s Renee Masterson broke five minutes in the regional round. The two should challenge the defending champion, Alex Banfich of Culver Academies. If she can hang on long enough, Blanchard certainly has the kick to prevail over her long-time nemesis and win her first-ever state title. Maintaining contact, however, will be the most difficult part.

1. Alex Banfich – Culver Academies
2. Chelsea Blanchard – Carroll (Fort Wayne)
3. Renee Masterson – Beech Grove
4. Molly Hirt – Bloomington North
5. Lorna Whaley – Avon
6. Maggie Bingham – Westfield
7. Jordan Chester – Boone Grove
8. Samantha Ginther – Carroll (Fort Wayne)
9. Kristal Studer – East Central

Jones’ pick: Alex Banfich – Culver Academies

4×100 relay
With Warren’s Wright potentially out, North Central appears to be an easy favorite in this relay – those 10 points could put the Panthers out of reach in the team race as the field event results start flowing in. Fort Wayne-area schools may be in contention as well. Get ready for the state’s two biggest cities to dominate the sprinting events.

1. North Central (Indianapolis)
2. Fort Wayne Wayne
3. Lawrence North
4. Warren Central
5. Pike
6. Gary West
7. Fort Wayne Snider
8. Fort Wayne Elmhurst
9. Westfield

Jones’ pick: North Central (Indianapolis)

400
Park Tudor’s Hannah Farley looks likely to continue her quest for four state titles in this event. Her :55.12 performance at the regional is well over two seconds faster than her closest competitor. Behind her should be a jumble of runners spanning across all three heats.

1. Hannah Farley – Park Tudor
2. Laura Weatherford – Greencastle
3. Devin Gosberry – Munster
4. Ruth Christopher – Munster
5. Ahlivia Spencer – Lawrence North
6. Kaila Stevens – Goshen
7. Tyreca Jackson – Fort Wayne Snider
8. Ebony Woodard – Perry Meridian
9. Keyona Neal – Gary West

Jones’ pick: Hannah Farley – Park Tudor

300 hurdles
Lawrence North’s Stacia Weatherford held the state’s best time nearly all season before Connersville’s Sara Berznott bettered it with her lightning-fast regional performance. If the Wildcats can stay close throughout the meet, a big 10 from Weatherford here would certainly help the team score. North Central and Warren also have hurdlers present looking to grab points.

1. Stacia Weatherford – Lawrence North
2. Sara Berznott – Connersville
3. Chelsea Ross – Fort Wayne Wayne
4. Evie Lehman – South Adams
5. Camille Edwards – North Central (Indianapolis)
6. Kylie Dossett – Evansville Reitz
7. Amy Sanders – Roncalli
8. Whitney Freeman – Munster
9. Brittany Housel – Columbus East

Jones’ pick: Sara Berznott – Connersville

800
Looking to redeem last year’s loss in this race, South Dearborn’s Kathy Klump is far and away the best half-miler in the state. Her 2:11.15 from the 2006 state finals ranks as the third-best time in Indiana history. Look for her to take a shot at Temeka Kincy’s state record. I’m also predicting at least two medalists out of the slow heat.

1. Kathy Klump – South Dearborn
2. Creasy Clauser – Southmont
3. Ashley Name – Mishawaka
4. Christine Talhelm – Franklin Central
5. Shelbi Burnett – Center Grove
6. Kate Desimone – Fort Wayne Canterbury
7. Abby Farley – Park Tudor
8. Kaitlyn Love – Westfield
9. Betsy Kim – Columbus North

Jones’ pick: Kathy Klump – South Dearborn

200
Chalk up another title for McGrone. Farley is a clear second, at least as far as past performances are concerned, now that Wright isn’t competing. After that, it’s a matter of advancing to the finals and seeing where the chips fall.

1. Candyce McGrone – Warren Central
2. Hannah Farley – Park Tudor
3. Erica Campbell – Pike
4. Nikita Owens – Evansville Central
5. Shanice Gholson – Jeffersonville
6. Jasmine Perry – Fort Wayne Wayne
7. Kristina Record – Ben Davis
8. Emaryne Watt – Perry Meridian
9. Kate Muskat – Indianapolis Chatard

Jones’ pick: Candyce McGrone – Warren Central

3200
Banfich, a two-time defending champion in the two-mile, is the clear favorite in the longer distance. If she wins the 1600 earlier in the day, Banfich will be looking to become the first ever two-time Triple Crown (cross country, 1600, 3200) winner in state history. Blanchard and Neer should challenge at the beginning of the race, but expect Banfich to romp over the final three laps.

1. Alex Banfich – Culver Academies
2. Chelsea Blanchard – Carroll (Fort Wayne)
3. Waverly Neer – Westfield
4. Dana Payonk – Lake Central
5. Morgan Hite – Plymouth
6. Linsey Daluga – West Lafayette
7. Sarah Higgens – Center Grove
8. Renee Masterson – Beech Grove
9. Carly Sobolewski – Indianapolis Chatard

Jones’ pick: Alex Banfich – Culver Academies

4×400 relay
Park Tudor comes in with the best performance this season, courtesy of its 3:55 regional win over Lawrence North and North Central. With the best anchor in the race, all the teams will need a decent-sized lead over Park Tudor if they want to win. Watch out for Gary West, which ran very fast indoors and has laid low for much of the outdoor season up to this point.

1. Park Tudor
2. Munster
3. Gary West
4. Fort Wayne Snider
5. Lawrence North
6. Crown Point
7. North Central (Indianapolis)
8. Warren Central
9. Carroll (Fort Wayne)

Jones’ pick: Lawrence North

High jump
Batesville’s Ellie Tidman is the returning state champion in this event. Senior Megan Schubert of Northwestern enters the meet with the best regional clearance of 5’7.50”. Four of last year’s All-Staters return, plus 11th and 12th place. This is an event that comes down to a lot of tiebreakers and is nearly impossible to predict with any accuracy. I just don’t see Schubert graduating without a state title to her name.

1. Megan Schubert – Northwestern
2. Ellie Tidman – Batesville
3. Tiffany Fisher – Westview
4. Jessica Smith – Orleans
5. Stacy Qualizza – Crown Point
6. Deairra Goss – Ben Davis
7. Meghan Bussaberger – Corydon
8. Hannah Osborn – Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran
9. Erynn Young – Muncie Central

Jones’ pick: Ellie Tidman – Batesville

Long jump
This is another of the harder events to predict as well. Up front, two-time defending champ Erynn Young of Muncie Central is the clear favorite. She eclipsed 19 feet at the regional in a battle with North Central’s Leigha Tolliver who, along with teammate Camille Edwards, needs to score big points for the Panthers. Chesterton senior Katie McColly finished third as a junior and fifth as a sophomore and should be in the mix up front. Beside McColly and Young, expect a lot of Fort Wayne- and Indy-area athletes.

1. Erynn Young – Muncie Central
2. Leigha Tolliver – North Central (Indianapolis)
3. Katie McColly – Chesterton
4. Cora Tatum – Fort Wayne Elmhurst
5. Camille Edwards – North Central (Indianapolis)
6. Chanel Simmons – Ben Davis
7. Shea Brown – Fort Wayne Snider
8. Jessica Harms – Fort Wayne Northrop
9. Maggie Gilstrap – Henryville

Jones’ pick: Erynn Young – Muncie Central

Discus
Yet another event with a returning champion who has multiple rings, Bloomington North’s Rachel Deloney won the disc last year as well as her freshman year in 2005. She comes in with the best throw by more than four feet, and beyond the top three, it’s quite a ways from Deloney to Centerville’s Courtney Bowen with the fourth-best regional toss. I like Deloney to snag her third title in four years, but it will be interesting to see if Felisha Johnson of Lawrence North can pull a surprise in her secondary event.

1. Rachel Deloney – Bloomington North
2. Monteka Flowers – Warren Central
3. Felisha Johnson – Lawrence North
4. Samantha Gable – Greenfield-Central
5. Elizabeth Delong – Castle
6. Melanie Huhn – Fort Wayne Luers
7. Courtney Bowen – Centerville
8. Katy Watson – Center Grove
9. Meghan Kessler – Crown Point

Jones’ pick: Rachel Deloney – Bloomington North

Shot put
Last year’s champion, Johnson, actually has only the second-best regional performance behind Meghan Kessler of Crown Point. Johnson’s best toss this season, though, was over 50 feet, three feet better than North Cantral’s Kyla Buckley in second. Johnson should easily handle the field and has a great chance to break Stacey Martin’s state meet record. Behind her could be a lot of jostling for team points.

1. Felisha Johnson – Lawrence North
2. Kyla Buckley – North Central (Indianapolis)
3. Meghan Kessler – Crown Point
4. Monteka Flowers – Warren Central
5. Rachel Deloney – Bloomington North
6. Tori Bliss – Portage
7. Melanie Huhn – Fort Wayne Luers
8. Ashley Dewitt – Kokomo
9. Tara Perigo – Lafayette Jeff

Jones’ pick: Felisha Jonson – Lawrence North

Pole vault
With the graduation of Katie Veith, the vault is open once again. Lawrence Central sophomore Margo Tucker has proven to be the most consistent thus far and has cleared the best heights. Presumed newcomer Ellie McCardwell, a sophomore at Pendleton Heights, has tied Tucker for the highest clearance at 12’3”. Valparaiso’s Abbey Sutton was fourth last year, seventh as a sophomore, and 10th as a senior. Tucker has too much not to win this go-round, however, on her way to multiple state titles.

1. Margo Tucker – Lawrence Central
2. Abbey Sutton – Valparaiso
3. Erika Markiewicz – Lake Central
4. Ellie McCardwell – Pendleton Heights
5. Sarah Kinnaman – Westfield
6. Paige Neata – Hamilton Southeastern
7. Gianna Mirabelli – Lake Central
8. Alyssa Johnston – Penn
9. Andrea Newcom – Jeffersonville

Jones’ pick: Margo Tucker – Lawrence Central

Team scores
1. North Central (Indianapolis)
2. Lawrence North
3. Warren Central
4. Fort Wayne Wayne
5. Park Tudor

Jones’ picks:
1. Lawrence North
2. North Central (Indianapolis)
3. Warren Central
4. Park Tudor
5. Westfield

VIDEO: Carmel’s legendary track/XC coach Koeppen to call it quits

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

The year was 1972. Chuck Koeppen was teaching and coaching at Wapahani High School in rural Delaware County. He was presented with an opportunity to interview for the position of head boys track & field coach at Carmel High School.

His first question upon being told of the opportunity was, “Carmel … now, can you tell me exactly where that is?”

Koeppen eventually made his way to the interview and subsequently accepted not only that position but one as cross country coach for both boys and the girls as well.

Fast forward to today, some 36 years later. It seems that coach Koeppen’s “directional impairment” has been a life-long problem. Once he found his way to Carmel, he never found his way back out of town. Generations of Carmel youth – and the entire Indiana track & field community – are thankful he didn’t.

The legendary Greyhound mentor announced just before the boys track sectionals that he will retire effective at the end of the cross country season next fall. It will mark the end of a spectacular career that has been dotted with numerous state championships in cross country as well as the 2000 state title in boys track.

It is also a career that has established him as the premier tutor of distance runners in the state.

HoosierAuthority.com had a chance to sit down with Koeppen during regional week and reminisce a bit about his remarkable tenure. One of the questions we asked him was why he had stayed at Carmel for so long – click here for his answer.

Koeppen’s journey to Carmel was equal parts passion and accident, but it was not necessarily one of intent. He was born and raised in Valparaiso in the heyday of Northwest Indiana distance running. Valpo was a hotbed for running, and Koeppen had a successful career for the Crusaders.

Upon graduation, he headed for Ball State.

“I thought I could probably run one more year before I flunked out,” Koeppen said. “But once I got there, I started to find myself. Then as the end of college started to draw near, I started thinking about modeling my life after that of my high school coach.”

That desire initially took him to tiny Daleville High School for a year, then on to his three-year stay at Wapahani. Obviously, his next move lasted a little longer.

In a day and age where fewer and fewer coaches stay in the business for their entire working life, Koeppen is a throwback. Not only did he never step away, he actually retired from teaching three years ago yet continued to coach. We asked him why – click here for his answer.

Koeppen’s name is recognizable to anyone who has seriously competed in distance running in Indiana in the past 30 years. Nonetheless, this is Indiana – not California or Florida. Track & field is a relatively lightly followed sport in this state. If that premise is true, then cross country is often an exercise in being totally anonymous outside of the running community.

We asked Koeppen the tough question as to whether that lack of recognition has bothered him through the years. The thoughtful nature of his answer is a reflection of the man – click here for his answer.

Stop for a moment to consider what Koeppen has seen during his coaching years. He has witnessed the exploits of Rudy Chapa, Maicel Malone, and countless others. He took a moment to recall some of the people he will remember fondly in the years to come – click here for his answer.

Let’s be frank. When Koeppen exits, another will take his place. Carmel’s track record (pun intended) says that coach will likely be just as qualified and, perhaps, just as successful. On the day of this interview, however, I witnessed what cannot be replaced.

I arrived at the Carmel track at 10 o’clock on Memorial Day morning, and Koppen was on the track with a small group of athletes. He quickly explained that they were having a time trial to see who would compose the Greyhounds’ 4×800 meter relay team in the state finals.

As he explained the competitive situation to me, his eyes twinkled and the passion for his work came through as though he was in his 20s and heading to that event for the very first time. After one of the runners turned in a season-best time, the joy in Koeppen’s voice and the bond between coach and athlete was one of those rare moments that remind me of why I do what I do.

That, my friends, will never be replaced.
