Scecina's two hits, Wethington's 14 Ks enough to blank 4A No. 7 Martinsville, 2-0

By Russell Sherman
Staff Intern

INDIANAPOLIS â??? There arenâ??t many teams that
have the ability to get only two hits, squeeze out just a pair of runs, yet
still win convincingly against a ranked team. But Class 2A top-ranked
Indianapolis Scecina did just that April 27 in knocking off 4A No. 7
Martinsville at Brookside Park.

The host
Crusaders got two early runs and rambled on as Emily Wethington didnâ??t allow
any serious threats from the two-time defending 4A state champion.

Wethington,
last yearâ??s Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year, struck out 14 in going the
seven-inning distance.

â??Emily
kept us in the ball game with her 14 strikeouts, said Scecina coach Tom
Moorman. â??I really think she is the best pitcher in the state.â?

The Ohio University
recruit gave up a one-out single in the top of the seventh but responded by
striking out the final two batters to **** any late Martinsville momentum.

Scecina
got one of its runs on a home run by Jamie Goss. Moorman, however, knows the
Crusaders, who came into the game hitting .386, canâ??t settle for just two hits.

â??The first
two innings were pretty good, but we werenâ??t patient with the pitcher,â? Moorman
said. â??This is the worst game we had hitting â??? we didnâ??t have many strikeouts,
and we just werenâ??t patient.

â??As far as
the way we played, I wasnâ??t pleased at all. We hit everything off the end of
the bat, so we just need to improve on getting the bunt down and being smarter
on the bases.

The
Crusaders didnâ??t have long to try to improve on those things as they were back
at Brookside April 28 for the first two rounds
of the Indianapolis City Tournament. But Scecina found easy going in the first
two rounds, first blanking 1A No. 12 Indianapolis Ritter 15-0 before plowing
past Indianapolis Arlington 19-0.

Mid-Season Classic: 3A No. 2 Norwell dominates four-team round-robin field

By Will Willems
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS â??? As the old adage goes, defense
wins championships. Not in the case of Class 3A No. 2 Norwell.

The school
just south of Fort Wayne
came down to Indy and dominated a tough four-team field April 27-28 at the
Brebeuf Mid-Season Classic.

In the
third game of the round-robin tournament Saturday Norwell downed the host
Braves, 9-1. The beatdown started just two pitches into the game when Rhett
Goodmiller blasted a lead-off homer to right-center field.

â??It wasnâ??t
easy, but overall it was just a great weekend, said Norwell coach Kelby
Weybright. â??It was a great team effort.â?

Norwell (11-0),
the defending 3A state runner-up, staked itself to even a bigger lead by adding
a run in the second inning on a RBI single by Ryne Otis. The game was then put
out of reach with Adam Ruprightâ??s three-run shot in the third, making the score
5-0.

â??We were
looking for a lot of fastballs and good pitches,â? Weybright said. â??We found
them and hit them hard.

â??We have a
lot of experience and it showed.

Brebeuf (9-5)
was able to add a run in the third inning. Jack Dillon reached on a fielderâ??s
choice and moved to second on a balk. A single by Tre Eberhart pushed Dillon to
third before Ty Adamsâ?? groundout scored Dillon.

The Braves
wouldnâ??t threaten again. Jarrod Parker, a Georgia Tech signee and possible
Major League draft pick, showed why he is one of the best prospects in the
country by mowing down one Brebeuf hitter after another.

In three
innings of work, Parker faced the minimum nine batters, allowing one hit (whom
he subsequently picked off) and striking out four. His fastball was routinely
reaching 95 mph, and of his 30 pitches, 25 were strikes.

â??It wasnâ??t
just Jarrod
â??? we got great pitching all weekend long,â? Weybright said. â??All
our pitchers were just outstanding; they just continued to hit their spots.

â??Weâ??ve
been telling them to just let the balls get into play and trust the defense because
we are confident in the seven guys behind the pitchers.

Norwell
added three more runs in the seventh to get to the final margin. To end the
game, little-used Sam Summer made an unbelievable diving catch on a line shot
up the middle.

â??Perfect way
to end the day, said a smiling Weybright.

Michael
Caley pitched three innings and gave up one run while allowing four hits to get
the win. Stevie Gipsen took the loss, giving up just Goodmillerâ??s home run in
his one inning of work before leaving with an elbow injury.

On Friday,
Otis got the win as Norwell beat 3A No. 4 Andrean by a 9-2 count thanks to a
five-run third inning. In early action Saturday, Norwell then dominated 4A No.
5 Anderson, 17-0. Otis hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Kreigh
Williams hit a solo shot in the third.

The
morning session wasnâ??t much better for Brebeuf as the Braves fell to Andrean,
7-1, thanks to a brilliant pitching performance by Carl Chambers.

â??It was
huge for us,â? Chambers said. â??Coming off the loss yesterday (to Norwell), we
needed to come out and play well.

Brebeuf
struck first in the first inning on an RBI single by starting pitcher Nate
Koontz. But Andrean responded a half-inning later for two runs on the benefit
of only one hit.

Kevin
Corbett walked and stole second base before moving to third on a passed ball.
After a walk to Jeff Stirbeck, the Fighting 59ers pulled off a perfectly
delayed double steal to score Corbett.

Two
batters later, a single by Cam Panther drove in Stirbeck and Andrean would have
all the cushion it would need.

Chambers did
get into some trouble in the second, loading the bases with two outs. But a
strikeout of Eberhart started a string of 10 consecutive batters that Chambers
shut down.

â??I just
got into a good pitching groove,â? Chambers said. â??The curveball was really
working, going 12 to 6.

â??I just
started to throw the ball harder and concentrate more with the bases loaded
there.

Andrean
added two insurance runs in the fourth with an RBI double by Kevin Franchetti
and a perfect squeeze bunt by Panther that scored Franchetti.

Chambers
put the game out of reach when he played long ball to deep center in the sixth.

â??I was
just trying to help myself out,â? Chambers said. â??I guess I got ahold of one.â?

Brebeuf had
its last good chance to score in the sixth when Adams
was hit by a pitch and Koontz reached on an error. But Chambers got Sean Domer
to ground out before whiffing Radley Haddad and Jamie Hebenstreet to end the
threat.

Andrean
capped off the scoring in the seventh with RBI hits by Adam Norton and Austin
Sutter.

Final scores
Friday
Norwell 9,

Brebeuf 5,
Anderson 2

Saturday

Brownsburg Invitational: Post-prom Plainfield (292) shocks loaded field at West Chase

By Russell Sherman
Staff Intern

BROWNSBURG
â??? All the chips were stacked against
the Plainfield
boys golf team April 28 at the Brownsburg Invitational at West Chase Golf Club.

The No. 8 Quakers
were going up against four other ranked teams: No. 1 Avon, No. 6 Noblesville,
No. 7 Center Grove, No. 11 Warsaw. They were coming off a night in which their
players did not get home until 3 or 4 a.m. because of prom. And they faced
windy conditions that wreaked havoc on all the competitors.

Yet Plainfield found a way to
fire a 292 and shock the 20-team field.

The
Quakers not only grabbed the trophy for first place, but they also had the
medalist at West Chase. Doug Kinney, Plainfieldâ??s
No. 3 golfer, fired a 2-under 69 in the difficult conditions for a three-stroke
victory over Pikeâ??s Brandon Wenger.

â??Iâ??m
unbelievably impressed, said Plainfield
coach Pat Cavanaugh. â??The late start time (1 p.m. ET) helped, but our guys were
in a good frame of mine and didnâ??t get down on theirselves.â?

Aside from
Kinneyâ??s 69, Plainfield
got a 72 from Kyle Dell, a 75 from Matt Tinkle, and a 76 from No. 1 man Zach
Treash.

The
Quakersâ?? score of 292 was 12 shots lower than second-place Avon
and 13 shots better than third-place Lafayette Jefferson. Of the other ranked
teams, Center Grove (308) was fifth, Noblesville (309) took sixth, and Warsaw (322) was 11th.

â??This
gives us big confidence â??? there were six or seven ranked teams here,â? said Cavanaugh,
alluding to third-place Lafayette Jeffâ??s honorable mention in this weekâ??s
coachesâ?? poll. â??Zach Treash struggled with putting but hit the ball solidly.
Kyle Dell is playing well but had some mishaps that hurt his score.

â??Other
than the 69, the guys finished about where I thought they would.

Avon, whom
Cavanaugh said was Plainfieldâ??s
natural rival, got a 75 from Blair Webb and a 76 from Ryan Wegeng. But the
Oriolesâ?? 304 was still well off Plainfieldâ??s
pace.

The other
surprise of the event was the performance of Lafayette Jeff. The Bronchos used
a 75 from Brian Wolpert and steady performances from the rest of their golfers
to card a 305.

â??Iâ??m very
happy, but we want to be playing our best golf in June,â? Cavanaugh said. â??We
will continue to work on 100 yards and in, including putting.
