FB: 4A #6 Shelbyville coasts to 40-6 victory at 3A Rushville

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

RUSHVILLE – Class 4A sixth-ranked Shelbyville didn’t spend much time on the field Aug. 29 in the first half of its Hoosier Heritage Conference opener at Rushville. The Golden Bears has six possessions, and none of them lasted as long as two minutes.

But just look at the productivity on those half-dozen offensive attempts: touchdown, missed field goal, touchdown, touchdown, punt, touchdown. Throw in a safety for good measure that helped spark a 30-6 halftime lead, and it becomes easy to see how Shelbyville posted a 40-6 win for the second straight year in each team’s conference opener.

Neither coach saw such a lopsided affair coming, however. Shelbyville, under 14th-year mentor Patrick Parks, entered attempting to provide an encore for the best season in school history (11-1), while fourth-year coach Chris Makowski’s Lions were flush with a fireworks-laden 58-28 road victory over Connersville.

But nine opening-half offensive plays that resulted in double-digit yardage – senior wingback David Brown, for example, finished with 103 yards and three touchdowns on only 11 carries in the first 24 minutes – jerked open the flood gates on this night. Shelbyville ended the night with a whopping 348-119 rushing advantage.

Rushville’s only score of the night came, ironically, on a Shelbyville-esque short drive of 1:27. That effort culminated with a four-yard run by senior running back Zach Comer that kept Rushville as close as 14-6 with 9:17 left in the first half.

Three plays later, however, Brown brought the second of his three TDs on a 45-yard run that found paydirt. Following consecutive three-and-out series, the Golden Bears benefited from another stalled Rushville drive when the snap from center sailed over sophomore punter Spencer Comer’s head and out the back of the end zone for a safety.

Upon receiving the subsequent free kick, Shelbyville needed just 1:56 to go seven plays as Brown’s third touchdown – this one from six yards out just 49 seconds ahead of the half – silenced the stunned Lion faithful with a 30-6 lead.

Any doubt whatsoever was removed on the second play of the second half, when sophomore running back Patrick Ellis went 62 yards off right tackle to put the Golden Bears up 37-6. A 25-yard field goal by junior Michael Parks with 3:52 to play provided Shelbyville with the final 34-point cushion.

Click here for video interviews with Shelbyville coach Patrick Parks and Rushville coach Chris Makowski as well as long touchdown runs from Shelbyville wingbacks David Brown and Patrick Ellis!

FB: 5A #2 Ben Davis keeps 5A #11 Penn winless, 35-27

By Ashley Looper
Video Editor

INDIANAPOLIS – Class 5A second-ranked Ben Davis outgained visiting 5A 11th-ranked Penn 394-182, but the hosts still had to survive an onside kick in the game’s final moments Aug. 29 to prevail, 35-27.

(Click here for video highlights and a post-game interview!)

Early on, this has the makings of a blowout as Ben Davis senior quarterback Greg Rice (13 carries and 171 yards on the ground, 5 of 14 for 49 yards and one interception though the air) faked a handoff on the Giants’ first play and rambled 77 yards for a touchdown. Then Phil Dudley put Ben Davis (2-0) up 14-3 on a three-yard run.

Penn (0-2) finally got on the scoreboard when’s Alan Sinclair 33-yard field goal closed the first-quarter scoring at 14-3. But Ben Davis pushed the lead to 21-3 on Miles Wright’s two-yard run.

The Kingsmen from suburban South Bend did not panic, however, as they added another three-pointer from Sinclair (a 34-yarder) before Tony Bodle’s 31-yard touchdown reception from back-up QB Jared Melander on fourth down made it 21-13 at the half.

When Brandon Drudge reeled off a 62-yard run, Penn was almost all the way back. But the extra-point kick was missed, allowing the Giants to hold on to a narrow 21-19 advantage.

They took advantage of the opening with a pair of ridiculously long TD runs. Rice ripped off an 83-yard score near the end of the third quarter before Wright rumbled in from 53 yards out just path the halfway point of the fourth.

That made it 35-19 and provided enough breathing room so that Melander’s seven-yard scoring pass to Karl Columbus and his two-point conversion toss to Garrick Dikos still required the ill-fated onside kick.

Ben Davis now moves on to the ultra-competitive Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference portion of its schedule. The Giants will face 0-2 North Central (Indianapolis) in the 6 p.m. ET kickoff of the Key Bank Bowl at Lucas Oil Stadium Sept. 5. (5A No. 4 Warren Central faces Lawrence North in the 8:30 p.m. nightcap).

Penn, meanwhile, will try to avoid its first 0-3 start in eons with a Northern Indiana Conference date at Mishawaka Marian next Friday.

FB: 3A #5 West Lafayette topples 2A #3 Cass, 27-20

By Grant Davis
Mid-Indiana Conference Manager

WALTON – Nobody left Owens Memorial Field disappointed Aug. 29 after an incredibly hard-fought battle between victorious Class 3A fifth-ranked West Lafayette and 2A No. 3 Cass.

West Lafayette prevailed, 27-20, in a game in which quarterback Matt Lancaster did it all. Lancaster rushed for 154 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown and threw for 152 yards and three touchdowns.

Despite those impressive numbers, however, the Kings were still in it. A lot of new faces on the Cass side of the ball found out they could go toe-to-toe with some of the best athletes Class 3A has to offer.

The first strike came when Lancaster hit Andrew Pekny for a nine-yard touchdown late in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead. The second strike came after the Kings’ gamble on 4th and 1 on their own 32-yard line that failed to convert, the Red Devils taking a 13-0 lead after a 28-yard reception by Paul Schumann early in the second quarter.

At this point, it didn’t look good for the home team. Cass needed to respond, or it might have been lights out.

No such quit in the Kings. They promptly drove down the field and scored their first touchdown of the night as a pressured Damon Foreman found Brody Edgerly wide open in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter.

The half would end 13-6, Red Devils.

The second half started out well for Cass. Edgerly did it on defense as well for the Kings as he intercepted Lancaster to give Cass an opportunity to tie the game. The Kings did just that by driving 65 yards, capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run by standout Colton Zeck (16 carries for 83 yards rushing, 40 yards receiving, two touchdowns).

But West Lafayette didn’t hesitate in answering as the Red Devils scored late in the third quarter on a five-yard run by Lancaster to regain the lead at 20-13.

That’s when things started to look shaky for the Kings. But a defense on its heels made a late stand, stopping the Red Devils on the 7-yard line. West Lafayette’s field goal attempt pushed left, and the Kings had a flicker of life.

It was quickly dashed when the very first play from scrimmage on the next drive resulted in a fumble and turnover. West Lafayette quickly punched it into the end zone on a four-yard pass from Lancaster to Pekny, and suddenly the Red Devils led 27-13.

The Kings hardly touched the ensuing kickoff, with West Lafayette freshman Brent Spack recovering at the Cass 19 and all hope appearing lost. But have no fear, Cass fan. The Kings’ defense rose up one more time, forcing a turnover on downs with 4:36 left on the clock.

The Cass offense then shifted into high gear, scoring in only 1:23 when Zeck tallied his second touchdown of the night on a 16-yard run.

Trailing by seven, everyone knew what was coming – an onside kick. A coach’s nightmare. A crazy bounce … bad hands … anything can go wrong. Unfortunately for the Kings, the big bounce on the quirky kick landed in West Lafayette hands, and Cass’ fate was sealed.

It was a battle royale that will go a long way in shaping this 2008 Cass team come conference time. And that time is next week as the Kings (1-1) travel to Northwestern (2-0) for the Mid-Indiana Conference opener Sept. 5.

West Lafayette (2-0), meanwhile, will hit the road again for its Hoosier Conference opener at Delphi (0-2) next Friday.

FB: Uncle Mike’s Notebook Week 2

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

Uncle Mike is riding high after being right on 11 of his 14 picks in the Week 1 staff picking contest. Heck, he isn’t right that often in guessing what state he is in.

However, he stopped gloating long enough to give his observations on Week 2 …

Northern Indiana
Andrean 50, Hammond Noll 7
I will resist all the obvious punch lines and just say that is what happens when you honk off the 59ers.

Concord 57, Elkhart Memorial 32
Word is they had to give the referees oxygen so they could keep running.

Portage 41, Highland 6
This is two very impressive performances in a row. All the pollsters started the season thinking Merrillville was the beast in “The Region.” Do you think it has been so long since they have been up there that they don’t know the difference between the two?

Valparaiso 57, Gary Roosevelt 0
I know it was Gary Roosevelt, but come on. That is more points than Valpo normally scores in a season.

Benton Central 14, Lafayette Central Catholic 13
This is a signature win for a program that desperately needed one.

Central Indiana
Madison-Grant 68, Eastern (Greentown) 48
How about that? The losing team scored more points than a Basil Mawbey-coached basketball team scores when it wins!

Center Grove 55, Perry Meridian 14
The Trojans got wild and crazy in this one. They actually threw the ball six times. I’m not kidding.

Greenfield-Central 27, Pendleton Heights 24
The Cougars are 2-0. That is nice to see for a school that was once a proud football power.

Columbus East 35, Columbus North 3
I would not want to be at Bull Dog practice on Monday.

North Montgomery 56, Seeger 14
There are a couple of ways to go with this one. This is the second week in a row that the Chargers have scored 50 points. On the other side, lord how the mighty have fallen.

Southport 43, Anderson 9
This is a great win for Bill Peebles, who is one of the really nice guys in the business.

Southern Indiana
Floyd Central 28, Providence 23
It is strange to say about a Class 4A team beating a 2A squad, but this is a big win for the Highlanders.

Paoli 41, Mitchell 14
I always thought people in Paoli thought a football was just a basketball that somehow got shaped wrong.

Seymour 28, Jeffersonville 20
This is not the start the Red Devils had in mind this year.

Southridge 27, Jasper 21
This is two years out of three. I predict a civil war, some redistricting – something.

FB: 3A C-ville rolls in Sagamore Conference opener at 3A #15 Danville, 38-20

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

DANVILLE – Whether it was offensive perfection or defensive collapse is a matter of perspective. However, one thing is a fact. Crawfordsville’s Class 3A Sagamore Conference attack at No. 15 Danville Aug. 29 was devastatingly swift and deadly.

The Athenians scored on their second play from scrimmage. After four offensive plays, they had scored twice. Still not impressed? Try this one on for size. After nine offensive plays, Crawfordsville had scored three times!

It all added up to a first quarter that Crawfordsville fans will long remember – and Danville fans will spend a long time trying to forget.

Superman made an appearance at the game in the form of Crawfordsville running back Craig Fairley. The first time Fairley touched the ball, he scampered 69 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 Crawfordsville lead. Evidently not satisfied with the scope of that effort, the second time Fairley touched the pigskin he sprinted 82 yards for another score and a 14-0 Athenian margin.

That’s 151 yards in two carries – not a bad start on any night. (Fairley, who finished with 22 carries for 247 yards, spoke with Hoosier Authority after the game – his comments can be seen by clicking here!).

The onslaught continued the third time Crawfordsville gained possession. Five plays into the Athenians’ drive, Brett McKinney hit Brett Linn for a 45-yard touchdown pass and it was 21-0.

Not to be outdone, the Athenian defense contributed to the early devastation by intercepting Danville on each of the Warriors’ first two possessions. At the end of the first period it was 21-0, and the shock was in full force for the large Danville crowd.

Crawfordsville, however, was not through yet. On the Athenians’ fourth stint with the ball, McKinney hit Jordan Boykin with an eight-yard fade route for yet another touchdown.

With 7:04 left in the first half, it was 28-0 Crawfordsville.

The hosts finally settled down and forged a drive that resulted in a one-yard touchdown plunge by quarterback Trent Schaffer to put Danville on the board. The only bad part of that drive was that the Warriors left too much time on the clock.

Crawfordsville needed less than two minutes to strike again. This time McKinney hit Linn with a bubble screen that went 51 yards for a 35-6 halftime lead.

Linn was another incredible story for the Athenians. The senior was playing sick, yet he managed not only to score two touchdowns on the night but also intercept Schaffer and the Warriors three times.

The other question of the evening is whether Danville righted the ship at halftime, or whether Crawfordsville lost some of its edge during intermission.

The third period saw Danville mount a sustained drive, and another one-yard dive by Schaffer cut the lead to 35-14. The drive was aided by several careless Athenian penalties.

Twice in the second half, the Athenians mounted sustained drives of its own. But all they came away with to show for the effort was a 28-yard field goal that pushed the lead to 38-14 early in the fourth quarter.

Danville scored with just over a minute to play on a pass from Schaffer to Justin Gillespie to make the final margin 38-20.

The second half gave the young Warriors something to build on for the rest of the Sagamore schedule. They’ll get their next chance Sept. 5 at Western Boone (1-1), a 28-19 Week 2 upset winner over Clinton Central.

On the other hand, Crawfordsville took center stage in the conference title hunt. The Athenians look to go 2-0 in conference play next Friday at Frankfort (0-2), a 23-7 Week 2 victim of Twin Lakes.
