W North Montgomery Inv.: #3 Perry Meridian posts perfect 7-0 record

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

Third-ranked Perry Meridian once again posted a perfect 7-0 dual record Dec. 30-31 to capture the team title at the annual North Montgomery Invitational. Among the Falcons’ wins was a trio of victories over ranked opponents – a 30-19 defeat of No. 9 Carmel, a 58-6 drubbing of 12th-ranked New Palestine, and a 44-22 doubling up of No. 15 Portage.

The story of the tournament was Portage, tied with Delphi for sixth place a year ago but a stellar 6-1 this time around to finish second. Three of the Indians’ half-dozen wins were by 10 points or less, including a thrilling 34-33 upset of New Pal.

The third-place Dragons had a pair of close calls themselves, downing Delphi 30-29 and Carmel 31-26 in addition to the one-point loss to Portage.

Carmel’s Will Mascaro, ranked No. 4 at 135, was named the meet’s outstanding wrestler.

W Al Smith Inv.: LN’s Quiroga beats Harper, 2-1, for 130 supremacy

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

Top-ranked host Mishawaka outclassed 31 other schools Dec. 30-31 en route to the team title at the annual Al Smith Invitational. The defending state champ Cavemen compiled 216 points to outpoint runner-up No. 11 Lawrence North (171).

The margin of victory was less than half of defending champion Mishawaka’s dominant 92.5-point gap from last year, when Mishawaka defeated Bellmont. The Cavemen managed but one individual crown this time around, compared with five a year ago.

Lawrence North (171 points) and unranked Lowell (13th with 104) each crowned a pair of champions to lead the field. The Wildcats slipped past a pair of higher-ranked schools – third-place No. 6 Bellmont (169) and seventh-ranked Merrillville (165.5) in fourth – for runner-up honors.

No. 16 Penn (142) finished fifth, with No. 14 Center Grove (134) sixth and No. 20 South Bend Riley downing 17th-ranked Elkhart Memorial by one point (132.5 to 131.5) for seventh.

In the two-day tournament’s marquee showdown at 130 pounds, defending 119 state champion Cashe’ Quiroga of Lawrence North outlasted three-time state champ Josh Harper of Mishawaka, 2-1. And the Wildcats’ second-ranked Brandon Nelson decisioned No. 5 Paul Beck of Mishawaka in overtime, 2-0, at 112.

The finals sweep of Cavemen helped ease the pain of playing second fiddle to two-time state champ Mishawaka (1991, 2008) for the Wildcats, themselves a four-time state champion (1992, 1993, 2004, 2005).

Lowell’s victories came at 119 from No. 10 Jake Lamb, a 6-3 upset winner over ninth-ranked Matt Milton of Center Grove, and from No. 7 Kurt Monix’s 14-3 major decision at 160 over No. 14 Quinn Kurtz of Prairie Heights.

Other huge showdowns on the day included the meet’s other defending state champ Steven Sandefer of Mishawaka decisioning Elkhart Memorial’s No. 7 Ryan Stahl 4-2 at 140, Hobart’s third-ranked 135-pound Johnny Dillon’s 4-3 upset of No. 2 Taylor March of East Noble, and No. 3 (at 119) Justin Brooks of Warsaw decisioning No. 4 Anthony Napules of Merrillville 8-5 at 125.

Zack Corpe, Elkhart Memorial’s 11th-ranked 145-pounder, was named the meet’s outstanding wrestler after a slew of pins. That included a finals stick of Lawrence North’s Matt Goodwin in 69 seconds.

Team scores
1. #1 Mishawaka 216

GBB Rush-Shelby: 2A #1 Heritage Christian ekes by 3A #5 Rushville

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

SHELBYVILLE – Those who don’t value tradition do not understand the power it possesses. The Dec. 29 championship game of the Rush-Shelby Shootout was a classic case in point.

Class 2A top-ranked Heritage Christian, a three-time defending state champion and nationally ranked, was matched against Rushville. The 3A No. 5 Lions are a quality team in their own right, having lost only once this season heading into the game. Nonetheless, on a player-by-player basis, they could not begin to match the talent of the heralded Eagles.

What they did have was tradition. Rushville was a perennial state power long before most of the Heritage Christian players were even born. That type of heritage breeds character, and that in turn eliminates fear.

Heritage Christian, thanks to some character of its own, survived this thriller at Shelbyville by a score of 53-49. But you can bet the Eagles traveled home with a new-found respect for small-town Indiana pride.

This contest was a grind-it-out, possession-by-possession slugfest. Rushville was determined not to allow Heritage Christian’s vaunted transition game to determine the outcome, nor were the Lions going to allow HC’s defensive pressure to speed up their own offense.

They won the battle on both counts. In fact, the majority of the few transition baskets scored in the game were in Rushville’s favor.

The biggest run by either team was seven points. The largest lead by either team was also seven points, a short-lived Heritage Christian advantage late in the game.

The game was sloppy early, but not because of carelessness. Both teams’ defenses quickly established that points on this night were to be earned. The result was a back-and-forth battle that found Heritage Christian holding a 17-16 edge midway through the second quarter.

It was in the waning minutes of the half that the Lions firmly announced they were not going away any time soon. Rushville outscored Heritage Christian 9-3 down the stretch, including the last seven points, to take a 26-20 lead at intermission.

Runs do not intimidate teams like Heritage Christian. They simply make the Eagles angry.

The Eagles charged from the locker room to start the third period with a 9-0 run that propelled them to a 29-26 advantage. That was the point where most teams crack, unable to match the efficiency and poise of the Eagles.

Rushville is not most teams.

The Lions responded with a 10-2 run of their own to hold a 36-31 lead late in the quarter. Despite battling turnovers throughout the quarter, Rushville managed to maintain the advantage to the end of the period at 38-37 heading into the fourth stanza.

The defensive intensity in the early minutes of the fourth quarter was impressive, to say the least. The teams crawled to a 41-41 tie with five minutes remaining. That is when Heritage Christian, in the person of potential Miss Basketball Kelly Faris, showed some character of its own.

The 5’11” senior had been frustrated offensively all night. But at crunch time – like all great players do – Faris found another way to influence the game.

In the next two minutes and spanning roughly five possessions, every shot that came off the rim at either end belonged to Faris. Her exploits were enough to propel the Eagles to a 45-41 lead, and that small margin was all Heritage Christian needed to seize control of the game.

The Eagles spread the court offensively and lived the final minutes at the free throw line. Six of their last eight points came at the charity stripe.

The strategy worked perfectly into the final 90 seconds of the game. The Eagles stretched their advantage to seven at 51-44 and seemed comfortably in control. Then it nearly backfired.

After Rushville scored to cut the margin to 51-46, Heritage Christian connected on only one of its next three attempts from the stripe. When the Lions sank a 3-pointer, it was suddenly 52-49 with just less than 30 seconds to play.

But Rushville was forced to foul again on the ensuing trip, and the Eagles connected on one of two to make it a two-possession lead with 12 seconds to play. Tremendous perimeter defense kept the Lions from even getting a shot in the waning seconds.

With Rushville’s defense geared to stop Faris, senior Claire Freeman stepped up as the big weapon for Heritage Christian with 24 points. Faris, despite being harassed all game, finished with 12 markers.

Rushville was led by Alexa Bess with 16 points and Morgan Herbert with 13.

After the game, Rushville coach Melissa Marlow was disappointed but very proud of her team. Her comments are in the video player on this page.

BSw Highland Inv.: #3 Munster slips past #2 Chesterton for title

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

Second-ranked Chesterton won eight of 12 events, but it was No. 3 Munster that captured the boys swimming team title Dec. 27 at the Highland Invitational.

Munster managed just one winner – Kevin Behrens with a :52.14 in the 100-yard backstroke – but the Mustangs prevailed with their unparalleled depth. Munster mustered up seven second-place finishes, and the Mustangs racked up 18 top-five finishes overall.

That was enough to roll up 366 points in the loaded eight-team field (six of the eight teams were ranked), 35 more than runner-up Chesterton. No. 12 Lake Central (216) finished third, with No. 8 Crown Point (199) finishing fourth and Valparaiso tying No. 35 South Bend Riley for fifth with 98 points.

Chesterton won all three relays, including a pool-record 3:13.44 in the 400 freestyle relay from Kyle Whitaker, Ethan Hall, Taylor Zakhar, and Bill Bass. Whitaker and Bass were double winners for the Trojans, the former taking the 200 individual medley (1:56.22) and the 100 butterfly (a pool-record :49.08) and the latter capturing the 200 free (1:43.67) and the 500 free (4:47.69).

Chesterton’s other win came in the 100 free with Tyler Fozkos’ :47.23.

The meet’s other champions were Lake Central’s Chris Johnson – a double winner in setting pool records in the 50 free (:20.87) and the 100 breaststroke (:57.87) – while Valparaiso’s James Raber took the 1-meter diving title with 375.05 points.
