Base: Noblesville blanks 3A #2 Crawfordsville in season opener, 10-0

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
NOBLESVILLE – It might have been opening day March 30, but Noblesville junior Ryan Byrne was in mid-season form. The lanky right-hander threw six shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out six along the way, as unranked Class 4A host Noblesville pounded 3A No. 2 Crawfordsville, 10-0.
The final score at Don Dunker Field belies the tight nature of the game. The Millers erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning against the Athenian bullpen.
Noblesville plated a run in the season’s very first inning, scoring on a ground ball by Derek Asuras. The Millers added two more in the second in handing Crawfordsville senior left-hander Steven Rice his first-ever loss, with the big blow a two-run single by junior infielder Caleb Shore.
Rice, a veteran of Crawfordsville’s state championship team of two years ago who finished 14-0 last season and had a career record of 24-0 coming in, settled down as the game progressed and held the Millers scoreless through the fifth frame. The Athenians threatened in the top of the fifth, putting two runners on base with only one out, but Byrne quickly defused the situation.
The Athenians thought Rice, who pitched five innings and allowed four hits and three runs while striking out eight, had thrown enough and turned to the bullpen in the fateful sixth. It proved to be unsuccessful as Noblesville dented the plate seven times.
“It could have been scoreless through five,” Crawfordsville coach John Froedge told thepaper24-7.com. “We definitely contributed to their first three runs. We will use every experience to get better – we definitely know where we need to get better.
“Noblesville was definitely more polished tonight than we were.”
First baseman Jameison Brock started the sixth-inning outburst with a two-RBI single and was immediately followed by catcher Sam Wides, who lofted a drive over the left-field fence for a two-run homer.
Andrew Rodgers also had a stellar outing for Noblesville, going 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs, and three stolen bases.
“It’s a great way to get started,” Noblesville coach Justin Keever told the Noblesville Times. “I just thought our guys played with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of passion and weren’t afraid to make mistakes.”
Hoosier Authority spoke with Byrne, the winning pitcher, after the stellar effort (see video player).
Crawfordsville’s hits came from Austin Evans, Chris Minks, A.J. Ehrlich, and Rice.
Next up for Noblesville is its first out-of-state trip April 3 against Cincinnati Moeller (OH) and Strongsville (OH).

4A #3 Westfield blanks Carmel, 5-0
Also on March 30, perennial 4A power Carmel (1-1) lost to 4A third-ranked ranked Westfield (2-0), 5-0.
Matt Hammel got the win in giving up just four hits while striking out 11 and walking one for Westfield (2-0), the defending 4A state runner-up which opened its season the day before with a 19-6 five-inning beatdown of 2A No. 7 Heritage Christian. Carmel senior Beau Bowen pitched 5 1/3 innings and surrendered seven hits and five runs in taking the loss for the Greyhounds (1-1), who opened with a 4-2 win over Hamilton Heights.
Carmel was led at the plate by senior outfielder Conrad Gregor, a Vanderbilt recruit, with a 2-for-3 performance.

BB: Indiana’s All-Century team is full of stars

From The Associated Press
More than 50 years ago, two young men who someday would rank among Indiana’s greatest basketball legends crossed paths at Butler Fieldhouse.
On one side was senior Bobby Plump of the small-town Milan Indians. On the other stood sophomore sensation Oscar Robertson of powerhouse Indianapolis Attucks. It was 1954, and a trip to the state semifinals awaited the winner.
Attucks led early, but Milan pulled ahead and played keep-away in the second half to win 65-52. As Plump recalls, he scored 28 points. Robertson, who became one of the NBA’s all-time greats, scored 22.
“I keep telling Oscar he has to respect me,” Plump said with a laugh during an interview with The Associated Press. “I don’t refer to the fact that I was a senior and he was a sophomore.”
Added Plump: “I think he was the best player I ever saw.”
Two games later, Plump hit the shot of his life in the closing seconds of the state final against another big-school power, Muncie Central. With time winding down, Plump drove from near the midcourt circle, then cut to his right and pulled up from about 15 feet.
The shot was good, Milan won 32-30, and a David-vs.-Goliath story that has survived generations emerged.
The story, and that final shot, inspired the 1986 movie, “Hoosiers.” Smooth-shooting Jimmy Chitwood from the film? That’s Plump.
“Everybody in Indiana was familiar with what happened in 1954 because they kind of lived through that thing, or they heard tales passed down,” said Plump, now 73. “It used to be I’d meet people and they’d say, ’I saw that game.’ Now people say, ’My grandfather told me about that game.’ ”
As for Robertson, the loss to Milan marked the last time he lost a state tournament game. The next year, he starred as Attucks became the first all-black team in the nation to win a state championship. He followed it up by leading Attucks to the first unbeaten state championship season in state history in 1956.
Plump and Robertson, perhaps more than any other two players in state history, inspired Indiana boys – black and white, city and country – to dream of playing in the state tournament. In honor of the recently concluded 100th state tournament, The Associated Press compiled an Indiana All-Century team.
The 26 players – the Van Arsdale twins have been included as a single entry – were chosen with input from a panel of experts who have been involved with basketball in the state for at least 20 years.
Larry Bird, an All-Century pick who averaged 30.6 points and 20.6 rebounds per game as a senior at Springs Valley in 1974, said the memories of pursuing a state title live long after the dribbling stops.
“If you go around the state, most guys played basketball on some level,” Bird said. “When I see a lot of my friends who played in high school but didn’t get to play in college, that’s all they talk about.
“They remember the coaches, they remember the cheerleaders, they remember the scores of games, and that’s their life.”
Gene Keady, who recruited the state for 25 years as Purdue’s head coach, offered a list of all-time greats. Later in the conversation, he realized he had skipped a few.
“You start forgetting many of these guys,” he said. “That’s easy to do in Indiana. It’s amazing how many players come out of Indiana, per capita.
“The state has the best players in the history of the game.”
The state held onto pre-class basketball until 1997, something that traditionalists say made the state tournament unique.
“I think it was special,” Keady said. “Everybody in the world knew about Indiana’s one-class basketball system.”
Former Pacers coach Bobby “Slick” Leonard, who played high school basketball at Terre Haute Gerstmeyer but was better known for his success at Indiana University, said towns often were identified by their high school basketball teams.
“When I was in high school, there were 714 teams in the state tournament,” the 77-year-old Leonard said. “That’s before a lot of consolidation. And there’s a lot of schools that had 20 kids in the graduating class, and everybody played.”
Leonard remembers listening to state tournament games on the radio in the 1940s, and what the atmosphere was like in Terre Haute and the surrounding towns as state approached.
“All those little towns, those gyms were packed on Friday night,” Leonard said. “When it got to state tournament time, they closed the barber shops, the drug stores and everything else, and everybody headed to the basketball game.”
The special moments, like Milan’s victory, stand out. Keady mentioned Luke Zeller’s buzzer-beater just inside half court that gave Washington an overtime win over Plymouth in the 2005 Class 3A final.
Warsaw coach Doug Ogle recalled watching Bailey play in front of 40,000 at the Hoosier Dome in 1990.
“I remember being way, way up, not being able to see very well, but you just felt it was kind of neat to be there as part of it,” Ogle said.
Now, eight teams on that final Saturday pursue the same dream that Hoosiers have been chasing for 100 years. That isn’t lost on Ogle, whose Tigers fell to North Central (Indianapolis) in the 4A title tilt.
“If you love Indiana high school basketball, how can it not add to the excitement – being part of the 100th boys basketball tournament?” Ogle said. “It’s important. I think it’s going to be meaningful to all four champions on Saturday because I think people are going to remember the 100th.
“I just think it will stick in their minds a little bit more.”
In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Indiana high school boys basketball state tournament, The Associated Press compiled an Indiana All-Century team with help from a panel of experts.
The team, listed in alphabetical order, by name, school and year graduated, with details from the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and Indiana High School Athletic Association:

Base: Fishers drubs 2A #1 Elwood, 21-10, in season opener

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
Class 4A unranked Fishers opened its 2010 baseball season March 30 with a lopsided, record-setting victory at 2A top-ranked Elwood, 21-10.
Fishers set school records of runs scored (21) and hits (20) in a game while pounding out two home runs and six doubles.
“You look at the 21-10 score and you think that the game was sloppy, but honestly both teams just flat-out hit the ball,” said Fishers coach Matthew Cherry. “The errors that were made defensively for both teams were not a result of sloppy play.
“You have to give Elwood a lot of credit – (they’re) a very good ball club and will definitely compete for the 2A title. They answered every punch we threw in the first four innings before we broke the game open with six runs in the fifth.”
Junior second baseman Koby Orris had four hits, including a pair of doubles, and four runs batted in for Fishers. Senior center fielder Ben Taylor added three hits, including a home run and a double, and had five RBIs, while sophomore shortstop J.P. Pena had two hits, one of them a home run.
Fishers junior Nick Tirro picked up the win with just one earned run in three solid innings of relief for senior starter Matt Woosley – who lasted just one inning after giving up six hits and seven runs, all earned. Sophomore Drew Clark pitched the final three innings for the save for the Tigers, who lost the sectional opener last season to arch-rival Hamilton Southeastern.
The game got off to a crazy start as visiting Fishers plated three runs in the top of the first inning before Elwood answered with four in the bottom of the frame. Fishers got right back on the horse with five in the top of the second, but the Panthers responded with three more to trail just 8-6 entering the third.
The victorious Tigers plated one run in the third and held Elwood scoreless in the bottom, then added two runs in the fourth before exploding for six in the fifth. That made it 17-8 heading to the bottom of the fifth, more than the Panthers – who were eliminated by Heritage Christian in a regional semifinal last year – could reasonably overcome since this was not slow-pitch softball.
Next up for Fishers is the home opener March 31 against another ranked foe, 4A No. 4 Kokomo.

Base: 4A #4 Kokomo wallops Fishers, 16-4

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
After a record-setting 21-10 victory over Class 2A top-ranked Elwood on Tuesday, 4A Fishers dropped its home opener March 31 to 4A No. 4 Kokomo by a score of 16-4 in five innings.
The Tigers struggled to find their offense, collecting only one hit in the first four innings before scoring four runs in the fifth inning on a Ben Taylor solo home run, a Koby Orris RBI single, and RBI doubles by Connor McCalley and J.P. Pena.
Kokomo (2-0), which opened the 2010 season with a 6-0 win over Eastern (Greentown) behind a 68-pitch, seven-inning no-hitter by senior Colton Summers on Tuesday, pounded out its 16 runs on 15 hits.
Leading the way was catcher Nolan Sanburn, who set a ridiculous precedent for his senior year by going 3 for 3 with two home runs and seven runs batted in. Junior second baseman Austin Colby also collected three hits, joining senior right fielder Phillip Kuhns (2 for 4 with two runs scored), senior pitcher T.J. Weir (1 for 2, three runs scored), and senior third baseman Devin Schacht (1 for 3 with a homer) with two RBIs.
On the mound, Weir went 4 1/3 innings and allowed three runs (all earned) on three hits with zero walks and three strikeouts. His starting counterpart, Taylor, lasted only two innings after giving up eight runs (six earned) on six hits for Fishers, whose bullpen was roughed up for eight runs on eight hits over the last two innings.
Kokomo next will host Taylor April 1, while Fishers faces a contest the same day at Greenfield-Central.
The box score (thank you, Fishers coach Matthew Cherry!):

BB 3A FINAL: Title #6 for #6 Washington, 65-62 in OT over Gary Wallace

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
INDIANAPOLIS – Washington did it again.
Making their third appearance in the Class 3A state championship game in the last six seasons, the sixth-ranked Hatchets made a living at the line in going overtime to topple No. 5 Gary Wallace, 65-62, March 27 at Conseco Fieldhouse.
The Hatchets, now a perfect 6-0 in state finals clashes, started the current run with a 74-72 overtime win for the ages over Plymouth in 2005 that was guided by eventual Mr. Basketball Luke Zeller. Washington followed that up three seasons later with an 84-60 beatdown of Harding behind the exploits of eventual Mr. Basketball Tyler Zeller.
This time it was another Zeller – 6’ 10” Luke – who led the way for the victorious Hatchets. The junior center scored 20 points and pulled down a record 26 rebounds as Washington (23-3) connected on 32 of 45 free throws to survive.
Despite a 10-for-17 shortfall at the stripe, Gary Wallace (19-5) managed to stay even through regulation on the strength of superior athleticism defensively that translated into 20 Washington turnovers. But the Hornets couldn’t quite overcome a 32-percent shooting effort (compared with 40 percent for the Hatchets) as the team’s offensive leaders, junior swingman Branden Dawson and 6’ 2” senior guard Latroy Taylor, finished a combined 16 of 48 from the field.
The 6’ 6” Dawson, who entered the game averaging 24.0 points and 14.7 rebounds but sat the first 5:45 for unknown reasons, tied Taylor, who fouled out with 53 seconds to play in OT, with a team-high 22 points. Dawson posted a double-double with 11 boards, but that was four below his average and again just enough to let the Hatchets escape.
Five-foot-10 junior guard Kurtis Anthony joined Zeller in double digits for Washington with 17 points, including a 9-for-12 effort at the foul line. Fifth-year coach Gene Miiller’s Hatchets entered the one-and-bonus way early in both halves, getting there at 6:00 of the second quarter and reaching the double bonus with 3:09 still to play in the third.
The tightly contested 3A showdown featured 10 ties and eight lead changes, with both squads having largest leads of seven points.
After a 9-3 spurt over the game’s first four minutes by Washington – prompting the remark “Gary can’t press if they can’t score” from Hoosier Authority Executive Director/self-proclaimed basketball guru Mike McGraw – Gary Wallace rallied with an 8-1 run to take its first lead at 10-9 on a 3-pointer by Taylor.
Dawson entered the game shortly thereafter, and his three-point play on a driving bank shot and one with three seconds left in the opening period finished off an 8-0 Wallace run that gave the Hornets an 18-13 advantage after the first eight minutes.
Washington halted a scoreless streak of 2:38 on a free throw by eventual Trester Mental Attitude Award winner senior Ethan Hunsinger, and the Hatchets entered the fateful bonus two possessions later. After Gary Wallace pushed the lead back to four on a runner by 5’ 9” senior guard Jamal Johnson, the Hatchets tied it at 22 on a layin by 5’ 11” sophomore guard Dylan Ervin.
Dawson made his presence felt with a putback and two free throws on consecutive possessions, giving the Hornets a 26-22 advantage just 2:20 before intermission. But Washington finished the opening half on a 9-2 run as Zeller drained a three two seconds ahead of the buzzer for a 31-28 lead.
The third period saw Gary Wallace open with a 13-6 run over the first 4:37 that gave the Hornets a 41-37 lead on a fast-break layup by Taylor. But again Washington responded with a late-quarter run, scoring eight of the third period’s final 10 points while leaving four more points at the free throw line during one wacky sequence.
Taylor’s third foul at the 3:09 mark put Washington into the bonus as Hunsinger got the rally rolling with another free throw. An Anthony putback cut the Hatchets’ deficit to 41-40 before 6’ 4” senior forward Alfred Devould missed a 3-point shot at the other end. Six-three senior forward Keon Small fouled on the rebound before 5’ 7” junior guard Devonte Harris was charged with a technical foul.
But amid a wash of boos from the Hornets faithful, Washington blundered the opportunity by missing four of five three throws on the ensuing, elongated possession. Harris made amends for the tech by canning a jumper with 14 seconds remaining in the period, and we headed to the fourth quarter at 45-43 in favor of Washington.
After an 8-for-15 effort from the line over the third quarter, the Hatchets would never trail in the final stanza as they went 9 of 12 in the final eight minutes of regulation (prompting another McGrawian gem: “The whistle has not been very kind at the other end.”) Yet the lead never grew past four, and Taylor would make the Hatchets pay for it in the last two minutes.
Taylor’s fast-break layup broke a 2:51 scoring drought for Gary Wallace with 1:38 to play, yet he could not convert the free throw on the foul as Wallace cut the gap to 55-53. The Hornets cornered Anthony at the other end but were whistled for a foul (one of 28 Hornet violations in the game) with 1:25 to go.
Anthony made one of two free throws before a most unlikely scenario got Gary into a tie.
The Hornets came down and proceeded to miss jumpers by Taylor, 6′ 5″ senior post Brandon Bradford, and Taylor again before Dawson then missed a layup. But Wallace kept snagging the offensive rebound, and fifth-year Hornets coach Renaldo Thomas – he of Gary Roosevelt versus Plymouth 1982 state finals fame – called timeout to regroup after a scrum for another loose ball ended up in Dawson’s clutches with 39 seconds left.
The maneuver worked as Taylor drained a trey from the right corner – directly in front of a Wallace bench that went delirious as the game was tied at 56. Neither team connected on desperation threes as time expired, and overtime loomed.
Washington opened the extra session with a seemingly devastating 7-0 run, the first five points scored by Anthony on a jumper and 3 of 4 from the line. But with 60 percent of OT having evaporated, Gary Wallace refused to surrender as Taylor hit a three, Dawson scored on a slam dunk, and Dawson hit one of two free throws to make it 65-62 with 42 seconds to go.
And, Washington would not get another shot off as the Hornets buzzed them into three straight turnovers down the stretch. But Gary Wallace could not find the scoreboard on any of those three answers as Dawson banked in a shot but was called for a charge, Dawson and 6’ 4” junior forward Arron Abram could not find the net on a pair of 3-point attempts, and Dawson missed two treys on the game’s final possession – including the last shot that looked good but bounced off the back of the rim.
The final numbers show a highly entertaining battle that ultimately came down to execution.
Yes, Gary Wallace owned sizeable advantages in points in the paint (38-28), on the fast break (24-10), and from the bench (30-6). But the Hornets never eclipsed 35-percent shooting in any sequence, going 10 of 31 in the first half, 12 of 34 in the second, and a woeful 2 for 11 in overtime.
Washington, meanwhile, made it count when it counted as the Hatchets – who overcame 24-percent marksmanship (4 of 17) in the second half after a 50-percent first (10 of 20) – hit 2 of 3 field goals and 5 of 6 free throws in OT.
Zeller’s 26 rebounds tied a 3A record set by Gerry Hall of Muncie South against Plainfield in 1999, while Washington broke records for free throws made and attempted for all classes. The even-the-third-time’s-a-charm victory over the last half-dozen seasons combines nicely with Washington’s state titles back in 1930, 1941, and 1942.
Washington’s Hunsinger named Trester Award winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Ethan Hunsinger as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award for Class 3A. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship to the school in his name.
The award is named after the IHSAA’s first commissioner, who served the Association from 1929 to 1944. The award is annually presented to a senior participant in the state finals who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability.
Hunsinger maintains a 3.49 grade-point average, ranks 32nd in his senior class of 150 students, and plans to attend Indiana University in the fall. He is undecided on his major.
The son of Alan and Monica Hunsinger of Washington has pursued a rigorous academic honors curriculum and is currently taking courses in honors economics, calculus AP and physics AP.
Athletically, he is a four-year basketball letterwinner and three-year part-time varsity starter. He also has lettered in baseball and soccer for the Hatchets and was an Academic All-State selection in soccer.
Finally, a buncha cool stuff courtesy of ihsaa.org:
QUOTES: Washington coach Gene Miiller
“We just hung around in there long enough to win the basketball game. We did a better job of taking care of the basketball as the game went on and our defense kept us in the game. That’s the most points we’ve given up all year. But it was in overtime against a real good team that came in here averaging 80 points a game.”
“Ever since the tournament began, our kids wanted to be the toughest team on the floor mentally and physically. We could have folded a number of times in the ballgame. But our kids have no quit in them.”
“The first win (coach of a state championship team) was a great feeling. But this one was so tough to get-it makes it more special. This one stands out because it was so hard to get and tough to earn. Our players put in a lot of hard work not only today, but also throughout the season and during the summer.”
“It means a lot to part of the Washington tradition. I’ve coached a lot of places but Washington is special and something for our players to be very proud of and honored to play at Washington.”
“Cody (Zeller) didn’t shoot the ball very well, but he did a lot of other things very well for us. Twenty-six rebounds is super!”
QUOTES: Gary Wallace coach Renaldo Thomas
“WOW! What a game. We had fun, Lew Wallace is gonna be remembered. I know basketball. We didn’t lose because of fouls or because of officiating. We lost because we didn’t do the little things you have to do to win. We missed some shots and man, those rims were tight…we didn’t speed the game up like we normally do. Plus, we ran up against a good team, a well coached team with a great player. Branden’s (Dawson) gonna bring me back next year, right Branden? And after that, I hope there won’t be any more Zeller’s.”
(Why Branden Dawson didn’t start) “It was a strategy thing. We did it in sectionals and him coming off the bench as a super sup fired us up and we wanted to do that again tonight. And it worked.”
(On getting to the state finals) “My only concern all year was winning the sectional. I wanted to win my first one and after that I knew we would be all right. It’s tough right now, the kids are down but I enjoyed myself being here and Lew Wallace showed that it has class kids, kids with GPA’s, kids that can keep their composure. It was a great game.”

BB 4A FINAL: #3 North Central sets scoring record in 95-74 romp

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
INDIANAPOLIS – Warsaw started off like gangbusters March 27 in the sixth-ranked Tigers’ showdown with No. 2 North Central (Indianapolis) in a Class 4A state championship battle for each school’s second state title.
Fueled by a massive crowd decked out in orange, Warsaw rushed out to leads of 4-0, 8-4, and 10-6 in turning Conseco Fieldhouse into a trembling hangar of sound. And then … the bottom fell out.
ENJOY PICTURES FROM JIM HUNT AND JEFF HEMMER IN THE PHOTO GALLERY!
Behind gargantuan 11-point efforts from bulky 6’ 4” sophomore guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera (first quarter) and bulky 6’ 3” senior guard Terone Johnson (second quarter), 17th-year coach Doug Mitchell’s Panthers posted 13-2 runs to both end the opening period and start the second stanza.
The 26-4 spurt was critical in North Central rolling out to 21-point first-half leads twice before settling into a 20-point cushion, 46-26, at the half. Smith-Rivera opened the game with a fantastic 1Q stat line of 4 of 5 field goals, 3 of 3 free throws, and three rebounds, while Johnson hit five of his seven shots in taking control of the second period.
That was all she wrote, sports fans. Warsaw never got closer than 17 the rest of the way as North Central (25-3) continued to punish Warsaw (23-3) into turnover after turnover with its ferocious full-court press.
After getting the Tigers to turn it over a whopping 18 times in the decisive first half, the Panthers picked up six more in the second in mayheming their way to 24 overall. And after shooting a solid 54 percent (19 of 35) in the first half, North Central turned it up in the second with a sterling 17-of-28 performance (61 percent) to finish at 57 percent (36 of 63) for the game.
Yikes.
Warsaw’s fearless 5’ 9” leader, junior point guard Nic Moore, finished with a game-high 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting. But it was a quiet 28 that was silenced early as Moore fouled out with 41 seconds remaining in the third quarter of a game gone awry for the Tigers.
The Panthers’ 95 points shattered the record for scoring in the class system-era state finals established for the 1997-98 season. Only one team in the 100-year history of the state tournament scored more in a title game: Indianapolis Attucks, which had 97 points against Gary Roosevelt back in 1955.
Johnson led four Panthers in double figures with 26 points, while younger brother 5’ 10” sophomore guard Ronnie Johnson had 17. Smith-Rivera finished with 16 and 6’ 4” freshman post player Darius Latham 14 for North Central, which won the 4A crown in 1999 behind eventual Mr. Basketball Jason Gardner.
Six-foot-five sophomore forward Lucas Grose had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for eighth-year coach Doug Ogle’s Tigers, while 6’3” senior forward Justin Clemens added 11 for Warsaw, whose state title came in 1984 behind eventual Mr. Basketball Jeff Grose.
Warsaw’s Clemens named Trester Award winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Justin Clemens of Warsaw as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award for Class 4A.
Clemens currently ranks 15th in his senior class of 457 students with a 12.4 grade-point average on a 12.0 scale. The two-year member of the National Honor Society intends to study physical therapy at the University of Indianapolis in the fall.
Besides basketball, Clemens has competed in varsity football (quarterback) as well as track & field and will graduate as one of his school’s most decorated student-athletes in history. He was named Academic All-State in football this season and is a likely candidate for the honor in basketball.
The son of Gordon and Dana Clemens of Warsaw was also one of three Warsaw teammates that were featured in the IHSAA’s Smoke-Free lifestyle campaign this winter.
Finally, a buncha cool stuff courtesy of ihsaa.org:
QUOTES: North Central coach Doug Mitchell
“We finally wore them down. It’s what we’ve done to people all year long. We go ten or eleven deep and it paid off tonight.”
“Our depth wore them down. Nic Moore (Warsaw) is one guy and a heck of a player. But we had four guys chasing him and thank goodness he fouled out in the third quarter.”
“We get so much offense out of our defense. This is one of the most satisfying championships I’ve ever had. It was done with such a complete team effort in the ultimate team sport.”
QUOTES: Warsaw coach Doug Ogle
“Well we just could not deal with North Central’s quickness and aggressive defense. You can’t really simulate it. They played very, very well in the first half and we did not. They’re very good, I’d say they’re not a normal high school basketball team.”
(On not having a player over 6’4”) “They don’t have a big guy but they’re quick and quickness is more important than being big. So there’s a lot to deal with and we didn’t handle it very well.”
(On Justin Clemens) “He epitomizes what you want in a Trester Award winner. He’s a tremendous student and one of the hardest workers that I’ve ever had. He listens. There is a lot of quality running through Justin Clemens.”
The box score:
