Sect. 45: 2A South Putnam knocks off rival North Putnam, 66-54

By Bubba Harnist
Staff Writer

GREENCASTLE
â??? South Putnam coach Kyle Brewer knew this was a big game. The Eagles were
playing a rival whom they beaten earlier this year by one point. They were
playing in the postseason, which meant they had to win or go home. And they
were hosting the Class 2A Sectional 45 on their home floor.

If South
Putnam felt any pressure, it sure didnâ??t show. The Eagles used a stifling
defense (forcing 23 turnovers) to get a lead on North Putnam, then held off a
furious rally from the Cougars at the end of the third quarter Feb. 28 en route
to the 66-54 win.

â??Itâ??s a
huge deal,â? Brewer said of the rematch with the Eaglesâ?? county and West Central
Conference rival. â??Anytime we play each other, whether it be sectional,
conference, county, we know anything can happen.

South
Putnam (10-11) came out firing, starting the game on an 8-0 run with six of those
points coming from senior Matt Hicks. After a North Putnam basket by senior Lee
Fordice got the Cougars on the board, the Eagles went back to work.

This time,
it was senior Greg Chestnut taking over, scoring five straight points to give
the Eagles a 13-2 lead just four minutes into the game. North Putnam (8-13) battled
the rest of the period, cutting the deficit to eight after one quarter at 19-11.

Chestnut
(seven) and Hicks (eight) contributed 15 of South Putnamâ??s points. The Cougars,
meanwhile, struggled in taking care of the basketball, committing five
first-quarter turnovers to just one for the Eagles.

Brewer
thought his teamâ??s defense was the key to the game.

â??The key
for us early on was our defense and getting turnovers,â? he said. â??I thought we
played great defense for the first two and a half quarters.

The Cougars
cut the deficit to six with a basket from senior Riley McGaughey to start the
second quarter. After a bucket from junior Ben Anderson and a 3-pointer from
Hicks pushed the South Putnam lead to 11 at 24-13, the Cougars got the deficit down
to 10 two times but no closer the rest of the half.

When the
horn sounded at the halfway point, the Eagles led 34-22. The difference in the game
to that point?

Turnovers
(South Putnam still had one while North Putnam was up to 10) and one Matt
Hicks. Hicks led the Eagles at the half with 16 points, while North Putnamâ??s
leading scorer was junior Jake Mullis with seven.

The second
half started disastrously for North Putnam. Five turnovers in the first 3:00 of
the quarter didnâ??t help. Neither did a 9-0 South Putnam run to start the
quarter that stretched the Eaglesâ?? lead to 21 points, 43-22.

Things indeed
looked gloomy for North Putnam. Still, behind first-year coach Wes Peek (a
close, personal friend of the writer!); the Cougars mounted a comeback that
left them with all they wanted, which was a chance to win the game.

The run
started with a basket from McGaughey to put the deficit under 20. From there,
the Cougars could do no wrong, much like South Putnam at the start of the
quarter. After forcing an Eagles turnover, the Cougars got a basket from Mullis
to cut the lead to 17.

The margin
continued to get smaller and smaller until North Putnam had cut the lead all
the way down to six points on a basket from junior Brayden Dahlstrom with six
seconds left in the third period. That bucket extended the Cougarsâ?? run to
15-0, and we stood at 43-37 heading into the fourth.

Almost.
The only problem at this juncture for North Putnam was that Dahlstromâ??s two left
a little too much time on the clock for the Eagles. South Putnam got a
3-pointer from Chestnut as the buzzer sounded to push the lead back to nine at
46-37 and gain some momentum following the monumental Cougar comeback.

Brewer acknowledged
the significance of the shot from Chestnut.

â??We know
there is always going to be a run, and North Putnam had theirs in the third
quarter,â? he said. â??Our answer for that was the huge shot from Chestnut at the
end of the quarter.

â??I thought
the kids did a great job during the run of keeping their composure and
maintaining their concentration.

The fourth
quarter saw the Eagles push their lead back to double digits with two straight
buckets. After jacking the lead back to 15 at one point, however, South Putnam endured
another Cougar rally that cut the deficit to eight with 2:43 remaining.

With the
score 58-50, though, the Cougars missed a golden opportunity to get closer,
committing an offensive foul on one possession and not converting a
three-on-one fast break on the next. Yet the Cougars managed to get it to down
to six, 58-52, after a basket from Mullis.

Suddenly,
things were getting real interesting again. But South Putnam responded to the
challenge with a dagger to the Cougarsâ?? heart, a three-point play from Chestnut
with 1:09 left, to push the lead back to nine at 61-52.

From
there, North Putnam would get no closer. The Eagles hit their free throws down
the stretch and eventually escaped with the 12-point win.

Leading
the way for North Putnam was Mullis with 19 points, while McGaughey added 14.

South
Putnam, which moves on to the first sectional semifinal Friday night, was paced
by Chestnutâ??s game-high 26 points as well as 20 from Hicks.

Brewer was
especially pleased with the play of Chestnut.

â??I think
our team is better when Greg hits outside shots,â? Brewer said. â??Itâ??s huge for
us for him to hit those shots because it helps open the inside game.

On Friday,
the Eagles will take on Cascade (10-10), a team that has beaten them twice already
this season. Brewer knows his team will have its hands full with the Cadets.

â??They are
a real good basketball team,â? he said. â??Itâ??s hard to beat a team twice in one
season, so three times is even tougher.

â??We will
look at some game film tonight and devise the best possible plan. Itâ??s early in
the process, but we will show up and put forth our best effort.

Game 2
will feature the winner of Wednesdayâ??s Monrovia
(3-18)-No. 11 Cloverdale (16-4) game vs. the survivor of South Vermillion
(8-14) and second-ranked Tri-West Hendricks (18-2).

Wright leaves Warren Central for football coaching post in Oklahoma

Staff Report

Warren
Central football coach Kevin Wright is leaving that prestigious post to coach a
similarly successful big school in Oklahoma,
according to a report in The Indianapolis
Star
.

Wright, the
son of legendary Sheridan coach Larry â??Budâ?
Wright who led the Class 5A Warriors to state championships the last three
seasons, will take over as coach of Tulsa
Union High
School. The Redskins have won two straight Class
6A titles and three of the last four in Oklahomaâ??s
largest class.

Tulsa Union
finished in USA Todayâ??s Super 25 the
last two seasons and went 154-26 under 14-year coach Bill Blankenship, who suddenly
resigned in early December. The Redskins, who play in a 15,000-seat stadium,
have an enrollment of over 3,500.

Wright, 41,
was 71-12 in six seasons at Warren Central and has been a head coach for 15
years, compiling a career record of 127-49 at Frankfort, Noblesville, Louisville Trinity,
and Warren Central.

The
second-generation coach had been a candidate earlier this off-season for the
job at another prestigious out-of-state school in Valdosta, Ga.
Wright is expected to earn nearly $100,000 when combining his salary plus responsibilities
as an athletic director and leading football camps.

Preview: Boys basketball sectionals (Class A)

By E.
Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
Oh, those
tricky administrators at Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, moving the games for
Sectional 51 up a day so they now go Monday-Tuesday-Friday-Saturday, which
completely trashes our plan for Fort Wayne-area coverage.

CONSARN
IT, PAPAYA!!!!!

Oh well,
live and learn. So it is that the Class A sectional preview gets writ first as
we sail into the 2005-06 version of postseason â??Hoosier Hysteria.â? Hereâ??s a
site-by-site preview of all 16 Class A sectionals:

49. Hebron Sectional
Host Hebron (15-4) is the only
ranked team here and as such assumes the mantle of favorite. (If thatâ??s not the
kiss of death in Indiana
sectional basketball, I dunno what is!) The 11th-ranked Hawks, who
sit at No. 18 in the latest Sagarin power ratings (SPR), also are the only team
in Sectional 49 to occupy a power spot in the Top 35.

Washington Township (SPR 39), in fact, is the only
other school in the seven-team field to enter with a winning record at 11-9. Hebron could meet the
Senators in the championship game Saturday.

50. Culver Community Sectional
Culver
boasts a pair of teams that are ranked, No. 5 Oregon-Davis (18-3) and No. 14
South Central (Union Mills) (15-6). Those two could meet in the semifinals,
although O-Dâ??s SPR is much higher (11 to 28).

There are
two other schools among the field of seven that are unranked but have solid
power numbers: Triton (11-9, SPR 21) and Westville (15-5, SPR 30). The survivor
of Tuesdayâ??s opener between Oregon-Davis and Triton will face South Central in
the semis, so Westville has a definite scheduling edge here.

51. Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian Sectional
We would
have been all over the Lakewood Park Christian-Fort Wayne Canterbury and Fort
Wayne Blackhawk Christian-Home Military games Wednesday, but with the late
change to move the first two days up, no dice. (Another way to look at that
unfortunate circumstance would be to add a few more names to each of the
schools listed above so we could ensure job security for ink sellers around the
globe. But I digress.)

None of
these schools are ranked, though the host Braves were for most of the early
season and did reach the Class A semistate last year at Lafayette, where they got drilled by eventual
state champ Lapel. Of the eight teams in this field, only two (the hosts at
12-8 and Lakewood
Park at 13-7) have
winning records, and Blackhawk is the only one with a SPR in the Top 35 at No.
14.

52. Tri-County Sectional
This field
favors the host Cavaliers (13-7), the only one of six unranked teams with a
Top-35 SPR at No. 22. Their Game 1 opponent, West Central (12-8), is one of two
others with a winning record; the survivor of that contest could get South Newton (12-8) in the semis.

53. Frontier Sectional
All five
of this sectionalâ??s teams reside in the SPR Top 40, but only Lafayette Central
Catholic (15-6, SPR 22) is ranked at No. 8. The Knights figure to ride the
momentum of the schoolâ??s girls team, which will play in the state finals
Saturday and could very well force the championship game here back to March 6.

But
opening foe Clinton Prairie (8-12, SPR 40), potential semifinal opponent
Frontier (11-9, SPR 31), or possible finals foes Carroll of Flora (11-9, SPR
15) or Rossville (7-13, SPR 38) will all try to prevent that from happening.

54. Southern Wells Sectional
This thing
begs to be dominated by fourth-ranked Tri-Central (17-3, SPR 3), which must be
feeling a vendetta toward potential regional opponent Lapel for ruining last
yearâ??s dream season. The Trojansâ?? main competition figures to be Wes-Del (11-8,
SPR 17) and the stateâ??s top long-range specialist (sophomore Nick Millspaugh,
.541 3-point accuracy) in the finals or Marion Lakeview Christian (11-10) in
the semis.

But it
will be a serious upset if Grayson Flittner, the stateâ??s leading scorer (29.8
ppg) and free throw shooter (.940), and his Tri-Central mates donâ??t advance out
of this seven-team field.

More to come …

STATE FINALS: Evansville Mater Dei completes perfect season with 11th team title

By E. Shawn Aylsworth

Managing Editor

Coach Mike Goebel’s top-ranked Evansville Mater Dei Wildcats
completed a perfect 24-0 season Feb. 25, barely getting past No. 2
Perry Meridian and No. 4 Mishawaka before throttling fifth-ranked
Bellmont to capture the schoolâ??s record ninth wrestling title in the
team format and its 11th overall.

â??This is certainly an enjoyable one,â? Goebel said directly after the meet. â??It seems like this day has lasted two weeks!

â??Perry Meridian did a great job, and Mishawaka gave it everything
they had, but I canâ??t say enough about this great group of boys Iâ??ve
had. With all the injuries and diversity weâ??ve had, to come back and
win was just great.

Semistate: No. 13 Lafayette Central Catholic continues magical Class A run with 65-53 win over ninth-ranked Argos

By Brandon
Jones
Staff Writer

PLYMOUTH â??? Two and a half weeks ago, the Knights of Lafayette Central Catholic were
11-10 entering sectional play and not playing up to potential, according to coach
Geoff Salmon.

Well, 18
days and six wins later, the Knights (17-10) will be making the trip down I-65
to Conseco Fieldhouse to play for the Class A state championship, thanks in
part to great defense and a storybook-type run through the IHSAA girls
basketball state tournament.

The latest
victim: Class A No. 9 Argos. In front of nearly 4,500 fans Feb. 25 at Plymouth High School, Salmonâ??s squad downed the
Dragons, 65-53.

One could
tell from the beginning that Argos
was going to have to earn every inch of the basketball court as the Knights
played stifling defense on the perimeter, forcing many bad decisions by the undersized
and inexperienced Dragon guards.

Neither
team led by more than one possession in the opening quarter of play, but
catalyst Jenna Jones sparked the Knights late in the period as she connected on
back-to-back 3-pointers as Catholic held a 13-10 advantage after the opening
eight minutes of play.

That was
just the springboard that the Knights would need as they came out in the second
quarter with a vengeance. Junior Kate Pechin connected on consecutive jumpers just
21 seconds into the second quarter of play to stretch the lead to seven. She
then came back (after a pair of free throws by Argos junior Amberly Oâ??Dell) to connect on a
3-pointer from the left wing.

The
environment was rocking at Plymouth as Central Catholic
stretched the lead to eight at 20-12, and Argos
skipper Rochelle Newell was forced to take a timeout. Things did not get much
better out of the break for Argos,
though, as the Knight guards were playing with a level of intensity that the
Dragons simply could not match.

Jones,
Pechin, and now senior forward Kathleen Mills were getting any shot they wanted
from any spot on the floor, and Central Catholic outscored Argos 8-5 over the
final two-minute stretch in extending its lead to double digits, 28-17, at
intermission.

Mills was
just getting warmed up. A huge nine-point third quarter by the senior stretched
the lead for LCC. The advantage would balloon to as many as 15 points late in
the period as Argos began running out of firepower, and the Knights held a
45-30 lead just eight minutes away from Indianapolis.

But Argos had other thoughts.
Newellâ??s girls played like they had their backs to the wall, which they did. The
Dragons scored 10 of the first 12 points in the fourth quarter to pull within
seven at 47-40. The Argos
contingent, easily numbering 2,000 fans, began to believe in their team as they
stood and cheered loudly.

That
would be as close as the Dragons would get. The Knights responded with a late-quarter
7-0 spurt of their own to put the contest out of reach at 58-44.

The rest
was mathematical as the clock would not allow Argos enough time to make another run. Free
throws determined the rest of the scoring for Central Catholic in the 12-point
final margin.

Mills led
the way for Lafayette Central Catholic with 22 points, while Pechin added 14
and Jones had 11.

For Argos (22-5), Oâ??Dell also
had 22 points from her guard spot, while Desiree Gilbert added 14 and freshman
Kelsie Hollenbaugh 11. The Dragons undoubtedly will be a force to be reckoned
with in the future as they return all five starters next season.

But the
present belonged to Lafayette Central Catholic, which will face South Central
(Elizabeth) in the Class A championship game March 4 in downtown
Indy.

Semistate: Malone's Memorial team outdoes Stull's 3A Rushville counterparts, 72-56

By Adam Rouse
Staff Writer

JEFFERSONVILLE â??? Seventh-ranked Evansville Memorial
withstood a furious second-half run by No. 6 Rushville before responding with a
15-0 spurt of its own Feb. 25 to put away the Lions, 72-56, to advance to the Class
3A state championship game next week against Fort Wayne Luers.

Rushvilleâ??s
Amanda Stull (19.9) and Evansville Memorialâ??s FahKara Malone (20.1) each came
into the 3A semistate matchup averaging 20 points a game. The two went mano a mano throughout the contest as
each scored 26, but it was Malone who received more help from her teammates.

The Tigers
held a 33-21 halftime lead after outscoring Rushville 17-8 in the second
quarter. But playing before a raucous crowd, the Lions got it going to begin
the third quarter, thanks in large part to Stull.

After scoring
10 points in the first half, Stull scored eight straight to start a 10-0 Rushville
run to cut a 12-point deficit to two at 33-31 with 4:31 to go in the third.

Memorial coach
Bruce Dockery called a timeout, and the message must have gotten to his players
loud and clear as the Tigers responded with an even bigger run of their own.

Senior
Courtney Reising connected on a 3-pointer to push the lead to five. A basket by
senior Jennifer Balbach made it 38-31, and junior Danika Malone increased the
Memorial advantage to 40-31 with 3:45 left in the period.

Malone then
added another field goal to cap off a Tiger run that saw Evansville Memorial
score nine points in exactly one minute of game action to lead, 42-31. The
eventual 15-0 spurt allowed the Tigers to take a commanding 48-33 lead with
just over 90 seconds left in the third.

The Lions
were never able to recover as the Memorial lead grew to as many as 18 in the
final period.

As hard as
Stull tried, she couldnâ??t do it all by herself. The 5â??9â? senior scored 16 of
her 26 points in the second half while playing the entire fourth quarter with
four personal fouls. Senior Laura Liggett was the only other Lion in double
figures with 12 points.

Malone did
most of her damage in the first half, with 18 of her 26 points coming before
the break. Her teammates picked it up in the second half in scoring 31 points
as three other Tigers reached double digits. Senior Kari Stieler and sophomore
Chelsea Falkenstein each contributed 11 points, while Balbach chipped in 10.

In
contrast, Stullâ??s teammates scored a combined 30 points over the course of the
whole game.

Rushville
led for a brief time in the first quarter before Evansville Memorial took the
lead for good at 10-9.

Semistate: 4A No. 11 Castle holds off No. 8 Hamilton SE in low-scoring tussle, 43-36

By Adam Rouse
Staff Writer

JEFFERSONVILLE â??? It sure wasnâ??t pretty, but style
points donâ??t count much when a trip to the state championship game is on the
line.

Class 4A
No. 11 Castle controlled a low-scoring affair through three quarters Feb. 25 before
holding off a late charge by eighth-ranked Hamilton Southeastern to defeat the Royals,
43-36. The win is the 14th straight for the Knights and advances
them to the 4A state title game against top-ranked South Bend Washington
next week at Conseco Fieldhouse.

After
losing three games in a row over winter break, the Knights (24-3) have been on
a tear over the last half of the season. Blitzing through its first four
postseason games with an average winning margin of 21 points, Castle found out
quickly that sending home Southeastern (22-4) would be no easy task.

The Royals
overcame a porous offensive effort through three quarters to even the score
midway through the final eight minutes, but the comeback was insufficient as the
Knights found enough points down the stretch to move on.

Heading to
the final eight minutes of action, Castle held a 30-19 advantage. Thatâ??s right
â??? a combined 49 points were scored through the first three quarters of a
semistate game between top-ranked teams. Weâ??ll get to that in just a minute.

Hamilton
Southeastern Senior Kylie York began an 11-0 fourth-quarter run with a three-pointer
to start the late rally. Freshman Courtney Osborn connected on another long-distance
shot to bring the Royals within two at 30-28. And junior Molly Greco scored her
only two points of the game to knot the score at 30-all with 4:12 to go.

Yet despite
not putting a single point on the board for the first 4:11 of the final period,
Castle would not trail. Senior Lynn McKinney capped off a mini 5-0 run to give
the Knights a 35-30 lead with 2:53 left on the clock.

York
responded with her fourth 3-pointer to make it a one-possession game again at
35-33, but the Knights put together another 5-0 run to go ahead 40-33 with 36
ticks to go. Senior Stephanie Gehlhausen and junior Jasmine Ussery each hit a
pair of free throws to ice the contest during the final spurt.

Senior
Katelyn Smith scored all 11 of her points in the first half to lead Castle in
scoring. She was joined in double figures by Ussery, who chipped in 10.

Despite a
rough shooting night (5 of 19), York
led the Royals and all scorers with 15 points.

Points
were extremely hard to come by through the first 24 minutes, and even harder
for the Royals. Hamilton Southeastern started off the game by scoring only six
points on 2-of-14 shooting in the first 11:19 of action.

The Royals
did not reach double figures until the 3:42 mark of the second quarter, yet surprisingly
trailed by just four at 13-9 as Castle was certainly not tearing up the nets,
either. Castle was able to build a 22-12 halftime lead by taking advantage of
its opportunities at the line.

The
Knights shot as many free throws (12) as it did field goal attempts in the
first half. Four Knights combined to shoot 10 of 12 from the charity stripe,
while Southeastern shot just three and connected on only one.

With only
34 points scored in the first half, the offensive flow had no where to go but
up in the second half â?¦ Or did it?

The Royals
and Knights combined to try a total of only 10 field goal attempts in the third
quarter:

  • Only
five of the attempts were successful.
  • Hamilton
Southeastern took only two shots from the floor in the first 4:05.
  • Castle
took only four shots (hitting two), but made four free throws.

When the painful-to-watch
quarter was over, the Knights had outscored the Royals, 8-7.

Hamilton
Southeastern did not record 10 or more points in a quarter until the fourth,
when it nearly matched its entire offensive output through 24 minutes (17 points
compared with 19 over the first three periods).
