There?s
certainly nothing unusual about the fact that Huntington North senior Chris
Kramer is hoping to cap off his high school athletic career by earning All-State
honors in baseball. In fact, if the truth were to be known, there are most
likely dozens of Indiana
student-athletes who are aiming for the same designation.
But what
separates the personal ambitions of Kramer from those of other high school
baseball players in the state is the fact that if he is successful, Kramer will
earn his third All-State title â?¦ this year.
?Honestly,
I didn?t even think about the possibility of being All-State in three sports
until just recently, when somebody mentioned the idea to me and how rare it
would be, said Kramer, who has already earned All-State recognition in both
football and basketball during this academic school year. ?But now, it?s become
a goal of mine. I want to be one of the very few, if not the first, in school
history to do it.
Kramer set
the stage for a remarkable senior year last fall when, as Huntington North?s
starting quarterback, he broke 12 school records, including most touchdowns
scored in a season and most touchdowns scored in a career. He also became the
school?s all-time leading rusher.
In
basketball, the four-year starting point guard who earned All-North Central Conference
honors as a sophomore, junior, and senior received his second All-State
recognition of the 2005-06 campaign after guiding the Vikings to an 18-3 record.
Kramer averaged 19 points, four assists, and four rebounds per game.
?Chris is
a phenomenal athlete, said Huntington North boys basketball coach Eric
Foister. ?As a coach, you dream of having a player that is athletic, coachable,
tough, hard-nosed, and a team player.
?He
defines what a multi-sport athlete is.
While
excelling in a variety of sports, Kramer acknowledges that basketball is, by
far, his favorite.
?Even when
I was around 7 or 8 years old, I can remember going to the YMCA to play
basketball every day after school, said Kramer, who has accepted a scholarship
offer to play basketball at Purdue
University. ?After a
while, I would go home for dinner, but then I would always try to go back out
and play more basketball.
?I just
loved it.
Although
Kramer missed three weeks of baseball competition early this season because of
an ankle injury suffered during the Vikings? spring trip to Kentucky and
Tennessee, Huntington North baseball coach Russ Degitz hopes that Kramer, who
splits time as a pitcher and shortstop, will receive due consideration for
All-State recognition.
?His first
game back, he pitched a complete game and earned the win against the then-ranked
No. 5 Homestead Spartans, Degitz said. ?And when he?s not on the mound, I
would not trade him for any other shortstop in the state of Indiana because of his leadership, work
ethic, and ability.
Unfortunately
for Degitz and Kramer, Homestead
gained a large measure of revenge on Memorial Day with a 2-1 victory in the
opening round of the Class 4A Fort Wayne Snider Sectional. Still, Kramer
remains upbeat about his future.
?I know
that I?m very fortunate because I?ve been blessed with some natural talent, but
I?ve also worked very hard, Kramer said. ?I just like to be competitive,
whether it?s in sports or in school.
?Being
competitive makes you work harder. It brings out the best in you.

MUNCIE ?? A rain postponement May 18 only
delayed the inevitable as the fourth-ranked Delta Eagles flew by two outmanned teams
May 20 to win their 13th straight girls tennis sectional title.
Host Delta
remained undefeated by posting 5-0 wins against Alexandria
(7-6) and Yorktown (7-10). The Eagles will be
looking for their third straight regional title May 23-24, when they play host
again.
?We know
we are favored in the sectional and regional, said Delta coach Tim Cleland. ?We
have the potential and on any given day can compete. That?s the way it is
because we?ve proven it to be true.
?Anyone in
the tournament now is good enough to win.
Delta?s
perfect day was highlighted by quick matches from No. 1 singles player Haley
Hall. The undefeated junior, who has finished fifth in the state finals the
last two seasons, was the first Eagle on and off the courts as her matches
against Alexandria?s Sarah Aldridge and Yorktown?s Elizabeth Ratchford both
ended in 6-0, 6-0 victories.
?I feel
with each match the team is getting better, getting stronger, Hall said. ?If I
make it to state, I just hope to get a good draw and try my best.
Delta?s undefeated
No. 1 doubles team of senior Katie Bryan and junior Kristin Crider hope to
return to state along with Hall. The two have been doubles partners the last
two and a half years and placed fourth last season in the state tournament.
?I?d like
our whole team to go to state, but I?d like for us to advance, too, Bryan said.
Bryan and
Crider defeated Alexandria?s Mallory Brooks
and Brooke Mevzek 6-2 6-1, then beat Yorktown?s
Andi Winney and Sylvie Rousseau 6-1 6-4. Winney and Rousseau had only lost one
match prior to Saturday?s sectional. This was the Yorktown
duo?s third and final year as doubles partners, their first at No. 1.
?Yorktown has great doubles teams, Cleland said. ?Their
four best players are on the doubles.
Both of Yorktown?s doubles tandems had defeated Muncie Burris,
and though they both lost to Delta, they fought tooth and nail. Yorktown?s No. 2 doubles team of Anna Wolf and Katy
Matchett went into a tiebreaker with Delta?s duo of Chelsea Overmyer and Kelly
Crider, with the latter prevailing 6-4, 6-7(4-7), 6-2.
Even
though Yorktown swept all five matches against
Burris, the Tigers still had to fight for the wins to advance to the sectional championship.
Ratchford, for example, battled Burris? Jamie Everage before pulling out a 7-5,
6-2 victory. And Yorktown?s No. 3 singles
player Tiffany Smith was stretched by Burris? Morgan Hicks before winning 7-6(7-2),
6-4.
But this
day was Delta?s.
The Eagles
will face Muncie Central (10-6) May 23, with Anderson (13-8) tackling Bellmont (14-6) in
the other semifinal. The regional championship is set for May 24.
?Winning
sectional boosted our team?s confidence to be able to compete in regional,
said Cleland. ?But it?s a quick tournament. You just have to look at what?s ahead
of you and try not to get ahead of yourself.

INDIANAPOLIS ?? In a lot of ways, the North Central (Indianapolis) Sectional final between the fifth-ranked
host Panthers and No. 12 Indianapolis Cathedral was as close as the 3-2 score
would indicate, yet victorious North Central was able to rest comfortably as
the final match was played out.
In the
end, North Central coach Heather Iffert made it a perfect 15 as the Panthers now
have won a sectional title in each of her 15 years at the helm.
?I knew
coming into this match it was going to be a tough fight, said Iffert. ?We
don?t meet Cathedral during the regular season, but I?ve heard a lot about
their team. They?ve got a lot of depth and great athletes, and I knew it was
going to be a battle.
The
Panthers couldn?t have gotten a better start as Jeremie Benjamin (No. 2
singles) and Anne Akhimien (No. 3 singles) easily won their first sets by
identical 6-1 scores. Both players kept up their aggressiveness and won their
second sets, this time by the same 6-2 counts, to get North Central off to a
quick 2-0 lead.
?Anytime
you can have somebody come out and win quickly, I think it settles some of the
other girls? nerves, Iffert said. ?To see Jeremie and Anne get off the court
quickly with a win, it helped us a lot.
At the
same time, Cathedral freshman Paula Usina had recovered from an early break and
a 3-2 deficit to win four straight games to pick up the first set over senior
Sarah Brinkley. And Usina kept rolling in the second set to take a 3-0 lead.
Meanwhile,
the No. 1 North Central doubles duo of Maggie Ashby and Alena Perez-Majul were
entangled in a tough second set after winning the first easily (6-1) over the
Irish tandem of Jennifer Graham and Claire Cornelius.
With Usina
seemingly in control at No. 1 singles, and Kelly Conrad and Emily MacGill
leading one set to zero at No. 2 doubles, Cathedral knew the match was winnable
despite the quick start by North Central.
The
pivotal match ended up being at No. 1 doubles, where Ashby and Perez-Majul were
able to hold on for a second-set, 6-4 win to clinch the sectional title for
North Central.
?I saw a
lot of good things out here that hopefully we can take into Tuesday against Carmel, said Iffert,
whose 9-2 Panthers will face the sixth-ranked Greyhounds (14-3) in a North
Central Regional semifinal.
After
being up 5-2 in the second set, Usina held off a comeback attempt from Brinkley
to win 6-4 and give Cathedral its first point of the match.
Conrad and
MacGill lost a difficult tiebreaker (9-7) in the second set but regrouped in
the third and decisive set to win 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 in the final match of their
careers.
With her
win at No. 1 singles, Usina will advance to next weekend?s individual
competition.

LEBANON ?? No. 13 Zionsville lived up to
its reputation May 20 as the Eagles took the Lebanon Sectional title with a
pair of 5-0 victories. Zionsville first blanked Western Boone in the semifinal
round before turning the trick again when it mattered most against host Lebanon in the
championship.
Those
back-to-back wins on Saturday merely completed a perfect sweep for the Eagles,
who had defeated Rossville by the same 5-0 score in the opening round. Lebanon, meanwhile, had advanced with a 3-2
semifinal victory over Frankfort.
?We?re
excited, said Zionsville coach Pat Slama. ?This is where we want to be.
Zionsville
(13-3) will move on to regional play May 23-24 at West Lafayette. The Eagles, who face Rockville (12-3) in a
regional semifinal Tuesday, will be working on their sixth straight regional
title.
?We?re
still struggling, said Slama, whose troops will face the winner of the Benton
Central (5-4) vs. Lafayette Central Catholic (15-1) match on Wednesday if
victorious. ?We came out with a victory. WeBo and Lebanon were very strong.
?It was an
**** win, but it was a win.
Lebanon coach Kathy Dunshee, meanwhile,
was proud of the effort put forth by her Tigers (11-6).
?I though
we fought hard, said Dunshee, whose team picked up its first sectional win in
a while and captured its first Sagamore Athletic Conference title since 1987 by
going a perfect 6-0. ?It was nice to get into the championship round.
